  • This week I learned how to spin a drumstick between my fingers. The Finger Pass is one of the hardest pen and drum stick spinning tricks but even as a complete beginner I learned how to do it and in this tutorial I show you how you to do it too.

Your challenge for this video is to learn to do the finger pass technique (as explained in the video), using either a pen or drumstick. Post a video of your progression on Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok or UA-cam and tag @smallwinstv and #smallwinschallenge
    The Finger Pass technique:
Concept: Spin the stick 360 degrees around each finger from index to pinky and back to index
Starting position: Index finger on top, thumb and middle finger below
    Technique:
    - Learn the 5 triangles, start at 1, then repeat 2-5
    - Use the thumb and middle finger to set the stick in motion, then apply small amounts of force with each finger to keep the momentum of the stick constant
    Progression:
    1. Use your opposite hand to move the drum stick through each position
    2. Remove the supporting hand and move the stick through each 'triangle'.
    Tips:
    - To get a fluid motion relax the fingers and don't apply too much tension
    - To increase speed, keep the stick as close to the tips of your fingers as possible
    - Practice little and often (e.g. 10 mins every day)

Because of my job, I am on the roads for about 6-8 hours every single day so I just practice while I’m driving (since there’s never anyone in my passenger seat I have plenty of space to practice) and I can pick up on things in a very short amount of time like this… it’s also the place I learned how to solve a Rubik’s Cube… And occasionally I’ll use my steering wheel as a practice pad and I’ll practice my paradiddles and five stroke rolls and whatnots…

When we were teens, I asked my old friend and bandmate (one Neil Peart), how to spin a drumstick after rehearsal when we were all sitting outside one warm day, upon seeing him doing that. Neil (somewhat reluctantly) showed me the method you ar doing. I tried for a minute or two, but gave up. Maybe I'll try again, thanks!

Im doing it on bed with the idea of not braking my sticks 😂, and oh boy, got it sort of working in 20 minutes, was great lesson thanks 🍻
I have to say though that my chest, knees, and specially balls 🤣 are actually sore of how many times sticks fall off and trust me anybody, time after time it really harm 😂

I've learned this using thumb instead of pinky... geel a bit easier that way. One spin goes easy but it's hard to keep it spinning
