Hey, Ys translator here. Thanks for your kind words about Mask of the Sun's translation. Of all the non-professional work I've done, I'm probably proudest of it... though I realize it's making a silk purse out of the proverbial sow's ear. The fact is, I was only able to make Mask's script decent because of a quirk in how the game's text-insertion setup enabled me to reorganize the script as I worked.
As you might be aware, most game scripts are not set up in anything remotely akin to chronological order, so context errors are a major issue. It was all in one big text file, and I was able to move strings around all I wanted, since each was tagged with a memory address that the inserter would use to put it back where it belonged. So by playing the game in its rough form and then putting all the text in order, I was able to make everything flow. MotS is arguably the worst game in the series (though I personally think III for SNES is the low point), but it was canon, and being the Ys-obsessed geek I am, I wanted it to have the best script I could give it.
I didn't have that option with The Dawn of Ys. Or at least, I wasn't working strictly off of my own translations. I mostly did cleanup work on that one, translating about 40% of it and retouching the other stuff that had been done before I took on the project. The fandub was also done using the script I provided and put up on GameFAQs... though that was never meant to be used for that purpose, as it's overly literal and not at all my best work. Given the chance, I'd have gone back and retouched it to make it all sound more natural.

Amazingly in-depth and surprising response to this. I just finished Mask of the Sun myself and thought it was one of the best localisations I've ever read; any liberties you took with the script were largely for the better, and you gave it a sense of polish that it seemingly lacked originally. Thanks for doing the Goddess' work!

I contributed a few voices to the fan dub. It was fun, although I was probably a bit too hammy with my characters in retrospect. Now you've got me curious about Memories of Celceta... I'd like to see how its dub compares to the one BurntLasagna and all of us did all those years ago. Who knows if any of the characters I voiced are even in it, though...

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  3 роки тому +3

They likely are, Celceta didn't really do anything new, and most major characters are still there. If they're still acting like the same people at all is a different question altogether though. I wasn't too fond on that game's take on the story.

Playing Mask of the Sun right after Ys 3 nearly broke me, but having first entered the series with Ys 6 and Oath years prior, replaying those was my light at the end of the tunnel. My simultaneous relief and burnout were so great that I just dropped my full series run for a year halfway through playing 6. I went back to finish the series when Ys 8 was announced.
Also, god, I remember that guide. "Sugoi Nihon-go" got me bad.
Edit: Well damn, I gotta play Dawn of Ys now. I had heard it was good, but I never imagined it was the best of the classics.

The Dawn of Ys is my second favorite game in the series, and I know it was never canon, but aside from the modern mainline titles, I see the PC Engine trilogy of Book 1 & 2 and Dawn as its seperate canon. I love those games so much.

Ys on Turbo CD is the best. Especially the music. I don't understand how they make the music so great, because I typically don't pay that much attention to game music. I like those games enough to want to try other ports of them, but I'm not sure I see the point without that CD music.

Yeah, the PC Engine CD Rom Rom was the go-to console for early Ys games. Still I appreciate that Ys 3 was brought to the west with 3 different consoles. Kinda a bummer that Dawn of Ys was Japan only (it definitely is the better game). Also glad that remakes cover almost the entire Ys saga (Ys 5 is still stuck in Japan). Excellent video, and well Tonkin House was definitely not a great developer.

Jesus those bossfights. If you are going to make an instantaneous kill move for a boss fight, at the very least it should be telegraphed. That minotaur boss looked like it was a matter of dice roll if you die or not.

It was fun but dawn of ys was a better game. I don't really like Memories of Celceta. There's a really obvious missing link that was not in Memories of Celceta but was there in the other 2 games. Why does everyone completely ignore Mask of the Sun - A New Theory for PS2? While it's still not great, I think it's better than the SNES Mask of the Sun, at the very least.
The lack of saving in dungeons is really terrible, but the bosses are pushovers, so it balances out kinda.
The progression / sequence of events is definitely less stupid and contrived than in Mask of the Sun, and the world design makes more sense in my opinion. The overworld layout is a lot less nonsensical than in Mask of the Sun. And that stupid quest to get the three gems so that the old man will let you talk to the sage is not there any more, thank god.
And some other plot events have been changed to make more sense too - when Adol is thrown into prison at the start of the story, instead of escaping by finding a "secret door button" (lazy lazy storytelling), in A New Theory, Adol earns his freedom by fighting a boss monster that appears in the prison. It's definitely better when it comes to these kinds of moment-to-moment story elements at the very least.
Though there's now a ton of backtracking, and the warp magic is only available _after_ most of the backtracking parts, so it's kinda useless lol. The magic system as a whole is pretty much completely useless since the swords take so dang long to charge, except for the final healing spell which is so overpowered it makes the final few bosses a breeze. :D And sword combat in general is kinda bad - you get three different sword buttons: light medium, heavy - but really... spamming the medium sword button is almost always the best way to deal with anything. :/
Yeah. The PS2 Mask of the Sun - A New Theory has a ton of its own problems, but I don't think that means that it isn't worth showcasing in an Ys IV video. I hardly hear anyone talk about it. Maybe it's because it has not received a fan translation yet? I have to admit, most of the story went over my head as I was playing in Japanese. But it's still an interesting comparison point to bring up when talking about Ys IV as a whole, don't you think?
