      I have this question nagging me. It might seem stupid, but it would be interesting to think about.
      Why didn't ships use side facing AA type guns to shoot incoming torpedoes? Even though they could only go 1-2 m in water, maybe that much could detonate the torpedo short of impact? Thanks.

      Q&A: Would it be possible to do special videos on the interwar period development of types of lesser sized ships? Relatively few hulls in each class, with each follow-on class improving or stumbling.
      For examples: A special on the Royal Navy's destroyers, another special on the US Navy's fleet submarines or the German navy's destroyers. Any other types or navies would be welcome too.
      Happy to hear you sound well again. Thanks for the informative entertainment.

    As always, an awesome and informative video Drach
    Very interesting to hear that the Bismarck shell found in PoW would have never hit the ship if the fuse had functioned as designed.
    I had never heard that before. I really learn things watching your video's.
    I would like to see a video on HMS Lion, the WW1 BC.
    People rave so much about how much damage the German BC's survived at Jutland yet they ignore Lion also took many hits but was still at sea, still combat capable and looking to continue the fight the next day while the German ships were hor's de combat and ran for home asap.
    Although hit by less shells, these German shells worked as designed as opposed to the malfunctioning British one. Lion also carried less armour. So balancing that against the heavier German armour and ineffective British shells I'd say she took equivalent damage to SMS Seydlitz, yet was in far better fighting trim at the end of the battle.
    Heavier inefficient British shells Vs Heavier German armour as opposed to lighter efficient German shells vs lighter British armour.
    What are your thoughts on my reasoning??

    • @Drachinifel
      @Drachinifel  5 років тому

      The Lion class BC's are due a review later this year.
      Personally I think the British BC design is more combat effective on paper, the ammo issues in terms of poor shell quality and bad cordite handling negated this at Jutland. But when it worked (eg HMS Tiger), they could take a huge battering from 11 and 12 inch shells, whereas the German BC's suffered more against 13.5 inch shells.

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 5 років тому

      Seydlitz aside, the other surviving German battlecruisers WERE operational (though beaten up) at the end of the battle, and they were planning to retreat back to port from the very start of the battle. The fact they ran away as they had always planned to do doesn’t really say anything about how badly they were damaged.

    Given that gunnery test for the hulk, the fluke dud and IJN's desire to 'exploit the glitch', we COULD argue that the hull that would've become the Tosa *aided* the little destroyers & dd-escorts in the Battle off Samar, with the long-fused main battery shells just passing THROUGH the Sam B. Roberts, Johnson, *et al.* and also hamper the effectiveness of the Yamato's batteries (also taking into account Kurita's confusion over his intended targets being cruisers and not destroyers).

    Why would the Japanese signed tge washington navak treaty knowing that they could not use the hulls to complete their battlecruisers and battleships?

    • @Wolfeson28
      @Wolfeson28 5 років тому +54

      The British and Americans also had to either scrap or cancel a number of their own planned battleships and battlecruisers under the treaty restrictions. The Japanese signed the treaty largely because they did not have the financial or industrial capability to maintain the current naval building race with the U.S. or Britain if it had continued unrestricted. The Japanese would go on to forget or ignore this fact in the 1930s when they withdrew from the naval treaties, only to have it re-demonstrated to them in dramatic fashion during WWII.

    • @SpaceDrake
      @SpaceDrake 4 роки тому

      No, that was intended as a defense against torpedo boats and close-in destroyers, who were seen as the primary potential threats to big gun cap-ships. Serious anti-air defense didn't enter design consideration until the 1930s, when it started to become obvious that a flight of planes could, in fact, seriously threaten a surface warship (keep in mind that the WWI vintage planes were little more than recon vehicles and couldn't carry ordinance heavy enough to seriously threaten a warship).

      They need long thin hulls to increase their speed. Short, stout hulls, while more maneuverable, are also inherently slower.

    • @Drachinifel
      @Drachinifel  5 років тому +4

      Longer hulls relative to beam increases speed, but also the need for considerably more machinery, the amount of power needed to increase speed increases dramatically past about 18-20 knots and the curve keeps getting steeper.

It has a hypothetical modernization based off of a similar one that modernized Nagato historicaly where she has a much more feasible armor scheme. I can see Tosa receiving that change as well, with just better armor than Amagi, since Tosa is a battleship and not a battlecruiser

    You know,I always wondered,thy all those mega riche twats that have his mega yachts built that all look pretty much the same.I wonder if could, instead of a yacht, build and exact replica of say hms dreadnought, without armor and fake guns but so that about the water line it looked exactly the same as the original.You could even go a step there and have and escort carrier with something like kitfoxs or highlanders to make up the "airwing".It would have to be a smaller capital ship, can't imagine even Bill Gates having the money for a Tillman.Maybe I'm just crazy but wouldn't it just be the Pinnacle of cool

    I don’t get it, why all the pomp and circumstance around constructing battleships. This channel goes long in bringing a lot of sense to modern naval warfare especially during World War I and World War II. Wouldn’t it have made better sense to just build a whole bunch of heavy cruisers with 9 inch guns along with a whole bunch of destroyers and just use swarm tactics to take out assembled battle fleets.

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 2 роки тому

      In WWII, when carriers dominated, putting new services into service was genuinely a poor choice (albeit nobody had proof of this so everyone made this error anyways, with some nations continuing to build more battleships even afterwards).
      But in WWI there really wasn’t anything that could seriously threaten battleships (heavy cruisers weren’t a thing yet, armoured and protected cruisers lacked the firepower, destroyers and subs would have to use torpedoes much less capable than WWII torpedoes, and subs were too slow for fleet actions, even in WWII).

    The Captain Hyrdoofus was an naval ignoramus.
    It should have been RIDICULOUSLY obvious to even an intelligent child.
    That the order for a battleship should ALWAYS be - armour, gunpower and then speed.
    This should have been 'well duh' even before Jutland.
    What's the point of having superior speed if you cannot stand up to the enemies guns?
    And 'no' Jackie.
    Speed is NOT armour.
