Your humility and way you explain is very refreshing in an individual
Thanks S!
I've been painting for quite a long time. I currently have seven 2000+ point 40K armies and almost done with number eight. (Quite a few more on the back burner.) I consume quite a lot of 40K/ miniature painting content via UA-cam on a daily basis and somehow I only recently became aware of your channel. Your videos are simply put, amazing. You are very good at explaining the intricacies of various techniques and demonstrating their application in a clear, concise and helpful manner. I recently found myself in a bit of a painting burnout rut and your videos have bumped up my motivation. Thank you sir, keep up the great work!
I’m glad to hear the videos could inspire. Regardless of specific content that is what I hope to do.. so It’s great to hear this :)
you've got some of the best videos out there. So calm, so positive, like a teacher whos talking directly to me and understands exactly the frustration and general intimidation that can come with painting minis.
Well thank you, I really appreciate you letting me know.
Just stumbled over your Channel. Watched the whole Video in a Go and have to say you give me heavy teacher vibes ( in a good way) also the quality is on Point. Very relaxing to listen to. I would say you got a new follower. Keep up the good work 👌
You may leave an apple on my desk 😂 But seriously, thanks a lot. I appreciate hearing this. And welcome to the channel. 👋
Yes your videos are very calming, and I'm happy you don't resort to goofing off like so many other channels. It's almost like an ASMR miniature painting channel. Also, I find the production values on your video very slick, I don't know if you some expensive setup, but it's very professional looking.
Your method of printing off the pictures to use as a guide during the painting stage is brilliant. I'm going to use that, thank you.
Glad to hear it! Thanks B
By far, this is the best video about zenithal priming. Focused less on the how to do it but on why it is a good approach and what to do with it. Great content.
I'm very please to hear that you like it. Thanks! I've been zenithal priming for so long without actually reaping the benifits. Figgured there's probably more out there like me.
@@52Miniatures same. it was only until recently thay i started to take advantage of it
Between 5:36 and 5:37 - "so then the highlights magically appeared, which saved me a great deal of time"
Another great video, thanks!
😂 love a bit of magic :) Thanks Angus!
Ultramarine has always been one of my favorite pigments. For the color, sure. But I also just enjoy the idea that some artist looked at this precious stone people were making jewelry out of and thought "I bet it would look great if I smashed that to powder."
I get that Eric! It's real interesting to read about the history of pigments. And how one used to dye clothes. I definitely can appreciate all that.
Thanks for making this video! I enjoy your style of delivery/explanation, it’s very calming. Also, great t-shirt.
I've been enjoying using a zenithal prime because I don't have the easiest access to light where I'm painting unfortunately and the little bit of white over the black primer really allows me to see the details of the mini, where with a single color of priming makes everything disappear and blend together for me.
the best and most likable paint channel out there guys
Well Yeah!
I've seen so many UA-camrs doing zenithal priming but then covering up all their work with paints that are quite obviously opaque. The priming doesn't show in many cases. Using glazes on top of zenithal primed models is a cool technique
Yes, quite right. The thought behind it is to use the zenithal prime as a guide. Even if it is painted over with opaque paints it helps getting the highlights and shadows in the right places (if one follows the zenithal guide). Just covering it without baring the guide in mind is quite pointless.
Love your tone in which you speak and the way you explain is excellent. I am seriously grabbing a notepad next video. Instant new subscriber. Thank you
Great to hear. Welcome to the channel Rob
I have been a little late to the party but I really enjoy your channel and the videos. I started mini painting after a 20 year break and you gave me already a lot of really good advice on how to further proceed into the hobby. Love the idea of taking a photo of the zenithal primed minis, increasing the contrast and printing it out!
Welcome back Tim :)
I’ve been using Zenithal for a while, but you always make me think and have a fresh idea for where to go next time. Thanks.
Lovely D! Glad to hear it.
This channel is amazing, definitely one of the top mini painting channels on YT atm. Back in the day you had to buy a 50$ DVD from CMON to get information and quality like this.
Well thank you very much, I appreciate hearing these things. It keeps me going :) If you feel like it you can always help the channel grow by spreading the word around town :)
I dont think I've ever learnt so much from a painting video. Fantastic work
Well thank you Matt! I’m glad to hear it.
It's a real surprise to me that somehow I'd missed this vid. I am a real fan of the channel, both for the ideas it's sparked and the insight into processes (especially the wet blending vid - I'd always wet blended in a very freestyle way with honestly mixed results, and the idea of using milemarker premixes along the gradient, that can always be reproduced now allows me more consistency across a model's similar volumes but also allows wet blending across units now. That's pure 52M, exploring process with fresh eyes and a clever brain insight). The second aspect, and what makes me a fan is the manner of "presenter". Laid back, calm, good humoured, but still with 100% enthusiasm and total engagement with each subject shining through - that's not an easy combined achievement at all, and it comes across so effortlessly.
Well thank you Allwyn. The mid steps in wetblending have really helped me. I think sometimes the wetblends become a bit to "soft" though, so I try and have that in mind. But wetblening something like white or black straight, with another colour.. that's tricky stuff.
You should have way more subscribers for the quality that you are putting out there. Make sure you keep going!
As for the zenithal priming, thought about using it as a guide, as for anything more it is just too grainy from a can, and you just confirmed i was on the right path. Thanks for a great video!
Glad to hear it V! Thanks
Lighten and darken the highlight _before_ putting on the washes! So simple yet so good!
🙌
that spray paint transition was flawless haha well done
Thanks :)
Wow.... I don't even know how to put this into words. I have a question, can't find an answer anywhere. I watch one of your videos and every possible question that I ever had on the subject is now magicly answered and in a way I can relate to and understand. Thank you!
Well thanks, I'm glad to hear that I could help out :)
@@52Miniatures I have been loving the accessibility of your content. Normally videos are kind of " this is super easy" and they just do it and when you try thousands of questions appear. You basically answer all these simple questions that end up making a lot of difference in the end
🙏
Just want to say I *adore* your videos. They tick all of the boxes, but what is additional to me as pointed out many times by others:
1) Your sense of humour rocks.
2) There is no 'Smashing of that Like Button, ringing that bell and did I tell you about my Patreon Affiliated Money Tank also? It's for THE CHANNEL, to help THE CHANNEL (ye...the channel is you, d&&khead!. Not YOU 52...)).
3) I love how you explain things so eloquently.
Just, keep on man :)
Cheers, J
Thank you humbly Jamie! I really do appreciate it.
Its always great when I'm looking for a guide/tutorial and I see that you uploaded one on that very topic.
Thanks, they are always helpful!
Awesome! One step ahead for a change :) I’m glad to hear it was helpful :)
Using transparent paints over a zenithal prime is my preferred technique at the moment. I make glazes and do a bunch of super thin coats. I did a video lol. I love the thematic waves of videos that come out around each other lol. Thanks! That first mini looks real good! I take “luminosity guides” and than always forget to look at them lol
We’re all making the same videos over and over 😂 The “luminosity guide” I’m going to be a bit more attentive with... it was very helpful and sort of made me pay attention / approach the paint job in a different manner than usual.
I am just starting out figure painting and this video was a tremendous help! Especially the part about taking a photo and turning it into B&W. Wow, does THAT really show highlights & shadows.
Thanks!
Lovely C, I'm glad this helped! Good luck :)
I've tried it for the first time with spray cans, and I'm glad you showed me how the end results should look! Usually examples are shown when using an air brush, but I don't have one. Good to know I'm on the right track. Thanks for the tips; will be checking the rest of your channel :-)
Great to hear N! I hope you also get something out of the other vids :)
Cool and Zen way to explain Zenithal Priming. I really enjoy your narration, fascinated! Greetings from Greece and keep on spreading the word. Thank you
Thank you Mario, I appreciate it. Have a nice weekend.
Grey base, white zenithal, Slap three contrasts and you have tabletop ready army
Really great video, I appreciate that you took the time to explain the purpose of Zenithal and then also explain the different ways of using it. I was really confused when I first started priming this way, your video makes things nice and clear. Your miniatures look amazing too! Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks! And glad to hear I could clarify things. Most of the time I just complicate things 😂 have a great weekend 👋
@@52Miniatures not at all! Your explanation and thought processes were well thought and thorough, really enjoyed. Enjoy your weekend, keep safe!
Great vid and very accurate in your description. One artist I followed for ages was Ben Komets. He did an ACW figure (large scale...120mm I think), where he used this technique. He also glazed the colours on instead of washing. It appeared to give more controllable results. Will be trying this technique whenI get a chance!
Good luck Andy!
I'm just starting back into the hobby and painting soon, Stargrave to Blackstone fortress and more. This is a very well-done video and I have learned a lot to help me begin. Thanks, and enjoy all your content.
Glad to hear it B!
That green cape looks bloody awesome! I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks Michael! I think that mini was one of my first "I'm just going to try and give this my best". Been doing it every now and again since and it's good practice.
I find the black in the zenithal priming still effects the opaque pigment a lot no matter how I paint. You seem to like greens a lot. Try mixing a dark purple with a dark green for your green-blacks. You might like that too as it compliments well I find. A lot of your ink and wash ideas are really great, thanks. I thought it was really funny the first time I heard the name of the "blue ultra marines".
Thanks Jason!
Very good video. There are several videos out on this topic, but this one seemed both professional and simple. Very well explained and smooth to watch. 🤘🏻
Thank you Christian, I'm happy to hear you liked it :)
I am just getting started in the hobby and this style of priming and I am trying to figure out why and how. This is a great video. Thank you.
Welcome to the hobby David, I'm glad to hear the video is helpful to you. Sinking deeper into this hobby, I still do try and think of all that are starting fresh. To still keep that perspective to my videos as much as I can.
Good video - I've been trying to use transparent paints over the zenithal priming, and then when I've got my colours down with the right luminosity, I apply glazes and gradients which follow the 'pattern of light', but add more depth to the colours. Mixed results at the moment, but hopefully I'll improve with practice. Thank you
Great to hear! Keep going at it, it’s the only way to get anywhere :) there’s nothing saying you can’t go in with opaque paints as well. If there details you really want to highlight and stuff. Inks seem to be the way to go if your looking for more saturation. Have a lovely weekend!
Have to agree here: just stumbled into your video and it's quite informative and relaxing. I've been using zenithal priming for quite time now and use in both ways.
I've even painted a whole mini with just oils over a z priming.
Well laid out info, relaxing but not boring and not over acted.
I've been thinking about this topic for some time now: zp is a thing, people see it been done and jump in the bandwagon (or should I say the BADwagon).
Been painting since early 90s and I enjoy both in-depth seminal vids and newbie focused ones. But there's a thing I can't stand, and it's people not having their own voice:
People saying how to zp and z primming just to slap paint over not using it as reference nor building paint up from that. They just do cause you look less of a pro if you don't, and then let's keep the chatter about contrast here and there.
It's ok if it rocks your boat but hate when others say a thing but their work doesn't live to their rich speech. I even unsubscribed some people as I feel they were repeating word by word whatever I (and definitely they) saw in someone's else vid.
That's what IMHO made your video work: at least to me you feel authentic. You tell people what it is and how to use it, but most important WHY using it, so people have a true choice about using it or not doing.
Sorry to write such long rambling, but the amount of work you put into the vid desevered to emphasize how spot on you are on this topic.
Zenithal primming is just a tool in your arsenal, much like you said. If it doesn't fit you or doesn't feel fun to you then prime regular. But to zp and paint as you would over flat primming is objectively speaking, a waste of time and materials.
Big thumbs up, loved. Great minis, BTW! :)
👋 Hey Javier, I appreciate the time you took writing. And we seem to be on the same page here. It’s good to hear that my point of making the video is coming through - I’m sometimes not overly confident about that. Also thank you for letting me know of how you experienced the video itself. It’s not always clear from my side if I’m just rambling or actually coming across... I noticed that zp was the most searched for word among my videos, and I really can see why people are wanting to zp. But figured a simple clarification might be helpful to people. I was actually contemplating doing a third castigator using oil paint! But had to draw a line somewhere :) Anyhow, thank you for the great comment, very appreciated. By the way, are you Javier from GSW? Or just the same name?
@@52Miniatures haha 😁 greenstuff world is a Spanish company (like scale 75 and Vallejo btw) and here Javier is much like being called Lars or Johan in Sweden. I just don't use nicknames on the internet. Quite old fashioned.
Sorry to say I'm not that person but I'm sure you can contact him really easy if you wanted. Hobby company dudes here are really outgoing.
Really enjoying your content so far, cat wait to see what you come up next 😍
👌 Yeah! You are absolutely right about a lot of good people about in the hobby. We have already been in contact. You share first and last name :) Thank you for all the feedback!
I intend to combine this method when I start that Savage Orc team, previously I did a Chaos Black undercoat that I would drybrush white on to before painting a miniature to conclusion; although that was more so I could see beyond an indistinguishable black space from the rest of the indistinguishable (also) black spaces.
Nice Dam, good luck with that :)
I do like value sketching! I find it helps as a guide for a wet blended base coat.
Getting a good push in getting the light right is just so valuable :)
Your work looks great man 👍🏻 I just started so I’m watching tons of videos about all the different techniques
This looks incredible (first mini, still watching!), very subtle.
I, like you can get carried away highlighting as I love to see them appear! Do you think that dramatic affect you got on the first mini was because the print out 'guided / forced' you to leave that much black, hence giving it a high contrast? (That looks AWESOME BTW)!!!
Excellent video, once again. I like the second technique with Contrast Paints (or other non-opaque paints) over the zenithal priming. I'm getting fast and more than acceptable results. A technique for reducing some speckles from the zenithal priming would be great, but I guess it's a consequence of contrasting spray paints? Next up I'll try gray+black instead of white+black underneath.
Anyhow, I feel there are very few videos on UA-cam of painters experimenting with Contrast Paints over a zenithal undercoat, so I'd love to see you explore this more... Although I assume that the results would be very similar to that second technique you showed here with the inks.
Thanks Bart. If you go for a light grey rattle can, rather than a white. Warm the can in warm water (for peats sake not in any other way) and shake extensively.. you will be pretty much speckle free. Grey Seer is my favourite so far. If you have an airbrush.. well then it's another story. Speckles should not be much of an issue. Regarding the contrast paint over Zenithal, have you checked out TableTop Minions? Adam over there talks a lot about this.. and (although I haven't checked myself) he streams on twitch a lot, I'm assuming the technique is used frequently during his painting streams.
@@52Miniatures Thanks for the reply! I'll try heating the cans a bit more, next time. I follow TableTop Minions, another one of my favorite channels. In fact, he discussed the Contrast+Zenith technique in one of his recent videos. I have to check his painting streams to see him apply it, didn't think about that yet!
Found you while looking into why i should zenithal highlight and thank you it was very informative il defo be subbing and following tht pointy finger for more.
Thanks! I try and hide some nuggets of information in a the rambling :) Welcome!
Really good video and great paint job. Subscribed!
Thank you and welcome to the channel Henry
I'll be honest I've only ever used zenithal priming to help pick out the details when painting but definitely going to use the tip of taking a pic and using it as a hightlight guide
I wish you luck! I find it very useful :)
Great video, exactly the topic I was looking for!
Thanks! Glad to hear it! 🙌
I realise that this is an old video. You're probably never going to see this @52Miniatures.
That said, I have NEVER watched a UA-camr, of any genre or content variety, who was just genuine and easy to listen to. I forgot I was watching a video, it was more like a chat with a friend.
The content is fantastic, informative and thorough, with out being boring. But you as a person ... there is something about you. You're so easy to listen to. I trust that you are trying to help me and not maximise your revenue. I feel like you give a crap about my painting and how I engage with the craft. If you ever decide to lead a cult, we're all screwed!
I have never subscribed so fast in my life. Best of luck for the future of this channel and for yourself personally. Thank you for the content you make and all the help you've given me.
Welcome to the channel G, I very much appreciate your comment - and I’m glad the videos can inspire. Hopefully, there will never be a cult.. maybe just a small one.. about painting miniatures 😂
Hi.I just stumbled upon your channel and watched most od videos in one go.I'd obviously subscribed.Firstly I'd like to say,you inspired me.Mainly to take another look on my hobby and my approach. You are so relaxed and calm when you talk about anything you do with minis or terrain. You try new things, playing with the whole hobby aspect, not trying to do God knows what, just letting it flow.I admire that.
Secondly, how did you came up with this colour scheme for first castigator? It's brilliant.Blue, green, red, basic colours and you did amazing job with them. That mini looks so good that I'm considering painting my stormcast this way.
Keep on that good work.Cheers.
Wow, thank you for telling me all. It is really nice to hear that the videos can inspire others in the hobby. I try and just convey my own hobby experience without to much of a plan or spectacle... regarding the color scheme... I’m hoping to be able to do a video on the subject but I’m not sure yet how to do it constructively. Almost every scheme starts with a first idea, in this case it was the blue armor. After that I decide a supplementing color... and then test paint usually (sometimes just on a piece of paper), and see what tone I would like ie. in this case what type of green. The rest just sort of happened by itself. And that’s why it’s difficult to make a video about the subject. I don’t really use color wheels or anything like that yet. I just go with what I feel like. I’m glad you found your way here and hope the videos will continue to be of insight and inspiration.
@@52Miniatures Do this video like you always do. I already got it only from the way you described it in the comment, so it's good. To be honest, I really like your way of explaining things. Your way of telling everything bit by bit is very understandable and clear. You seem to think that you're overexplaining and talk to much but that's not true in my opinion. And you proved to be worth of listening :)
About that colour scheme - I paint miniatures for quite a while but I haven't ever come up with such appeling and eye catching colour scheme. Even when I would've paint those colours on piece of paper/plasticard I would've difficulties to imagine the final result. Even with colour wheel. My wife is so much better witch that. I'm good when it comes to repeat someone else work, for now. So, I'm really looking forward to see your channel growing. Fingers crossed :)
Thank you! I’ll keep on going and cross my fingers to. Sounds like fun to have painting time with your wife! Great stuff 👍
@@52Miniatures since you try new things in painting, maybe you should try this ua-cam.com/video/mMFMFJQla6Y/v-deo.html - it appeared in '"recomended" under your video.I,for one, will give it a go.So I will try that new thing in painting for the first time since...very log time I guess 😊
Yes I’ve done a bit. For now I like to use oil paints for “shading” and weathering effects. And for painting terrain. But I haven’t been painting entire minis with only oil paints yet.
Amazing video and really good painting skills. I have subscribed (as I hope many other people do given the quality of your job) and I look forward of what you can bring, specially with regards of contrast paints: I believe they are "weird" enough to be used in many ways!
I'm glad to hear it, welcome to the channel. I must admit I'm a novice at contrast paints. I have two or three that I really like for certain applications but on the whole my experience is limited. Do you use them a lot?
This is extremely helpful! thank you for sharing this with all of us :)
My pleasure, I'm glad you find it helpful. Happy New Year!
The feels when you saw zenithal priming in a video that didnt really explain it and just wing it.. and after the 3rd black coat (since the white looked fucked) finally look up how its done.. :D thank you for the video .. wish i would have watched it earlier
Well thanks Laura, I'm glad to hear this helped :)
Just found your channel. epic. Love your style
Welcome to the channel F, I appreciate it :)
I found this very helpful thank you :)
My pleasure Chris
So glad I found this video
Glad to hear it G!
Hey man I love your videos, did you ever paint with scale 75 paints? I paint with Vallejo and I'm just wondering about scale 75. Cheers :)
Thank you Jakub, I'm glad to hear you like the videos. Yes, I pretty much only paint with Scale75 paints now. Tried a few for fun and can't go back. There are still a lot of the Vallejo paints I use but the scale75 just.. I don't know, I like the tones, they all work very well with each other. Some of the Scale75 paints are dificult to paint with, but most of them not. For me the matte surface helps a lot while painting and the the paint takes dilution very well.
I was unsubscribed for some reason earlier. Re subscribed! I did a zenithal prime on some song of ice and fire knight. It came out grainy for some reason. But it aged the armor well. Painting had been smooth overall. Video coming of your experience with Conquest soon?
A road map for light. Most succinct. Obscuring with opaque paint; point taken.
Excellent! Thank you.
Great video, I’m definitely gonna try!
I'm glad to hear it! I'm hooked on this stuff :)
@@52Miniatures May I ask u what do u think about doing this on primarily metallic model, like Necron?
Works great. You can use a metallic instead of a white if you like. I’ve done a vid on that I think. “Speed painting Necrons” or something similar.
Liked and subscribed. Like your video style :)
Glad to hear it Roy, welcome to the channel.
Thank you and great video especially day of my Birthday hehehe
Happy birthday!
I was doing it a bit but by the time I apply all my colours I don't think it exists anymore. Having a picture of the model is a really good idea though, I will probably try that and then have them on a screen to look at while painting.
Yeah, do give it a try. Just using it as a guide, and really trying to stick to the guide can work out real well. It is difficult once the guide is gone though. So shoot some pictures :)
I've experimented with cool dark and warm light colours for zenithal priming rather than black and white. I prefer how semi transparent base layers (filters?) work over the top, bringing in more opaque highlighting at the end of the printing process.
Now that sounds pretty smart F! I will have to dabble with that.
@@52Miniatures *should have read painting process
The idea for using the technique came from how I learnt to paint still life and life models at art school, very academic, very traditional, the roots of which were working 'en brunaille' or 'en grisaille'.
My biggest struggle is paint consistency. Your consistency looks very watered down, when I do that I find that it discourages me because it isn't opaque. Do you find that you just need to be patient and build it up in layers?
Miguel, hope you are doing well and staying safe. Yes... most of the time I paint a lot of layers. To get the first layer down can sometimes feel like it takes a to much time. But once I start building up highlights I don’t think to much about it. Even if the coverage is not great, it will be covered by a brighter paint, and then a brighter paint. In the end it all builds up and all the thin layers become a smoother transition... but I definitely understand why people hunt the perfect consistency.
Something that flows well but also gives good coverage... I haven’t gotten that far yet... it’s so dependent on the paint used, so there’s no default value. I’ve seen some painters that don’t dilute the paint in the wet palette. Instead they first dip the brush in water on the wet palette (or some “flow” mixture) then dip the brush in paint. I guess the moisture in the brush helps keep the paint moist but also “pushes” out the paint off the brush, giving a good flow...
Excellent
Thank you
Thank you sir!!!
You bet!
Helpful video...as always.
Glad to hear it! 👋
Great video
Thank you Branden 🙏 have a lovely weekend.
The problem I have with zenithal is that black is a color. I zenithal and then add a yellow wash, the recesses don’t come out dark yellow, they come out green. I like to use a single, top down light to snap a photo of my grey plastic miniature and then change contrast of the photo. Then I just prime in whatever base makes sense.
There’s a really good video on UA-cam by an art professor who goes into depth about why art students are told not to use black.
I was looking away during the spray can transitions and got freaked out when i saw you holding different brand bottles 🤔
I'm not sure I get what you mean.
Hmm... I wouldn't spin the miniature when applying the white, it kind of defeats the purpose of a directional light. Your zenithal ended looking like a wash over gray... You could have done that and take the picture reference with an exaggerated directional light "frozen in place", but you took those again with very much a neutral light... It work for keeping a good check on the contrast, but you can achieve an even more natural and dramatic look making it hit from a single direction. But for the best of both worlds by using gray like you did and a white for a truly directional (and more contained) last pass.
Not if the directional light is supposed to mimic the light from a sky. I definitely understand your point, for me personally I do not find it all that useful for tabletop miniatures. This is an introduction video to zenithal priming, to explain the concept in the simplest way. Then it is up to the individual viewer, like yourself, to take it further.
@@52Miniatures So omnidirectional makes me think more of studio lighting, but yeah... guess in an overcast day it would be still realistic. Of course, not having to find the "golden angle" of the sculpt, and light it accordingly makes this style of zenithal priming more accessible. Anyways... great experiments on how to keep it showing! Here to learn, so thanks!
It’s always high noon somewhere
There is always a sky somewhere
“Not . . . impressed”; I laughed at that, so I suppose I was impressed!
Hah! Thanks John :)
Sorry, this is unrelated to your craft, but what do you have around your neck?
A scarf :) but it's like a tube. Wonderful stuff.
The easy solution to not wanting to lose the effect of zenithal priming is zenithal painting.
