I'd rather have an original MG like the one I used to have 40+ years ago. An MG Midget. But as I probably would fit one now _(To old and not as slim as I used to be!),_ I'd opt for one of it's bigger siblings. The MGB or MGB GT. Especially if it's one of the revampt ones with new mechanicals etcetera ;-))...
This enormous disparity in opinion between professional car reviewers and actual MG owners is becoming something of a mystery. I own an HS, I could not care less about the ambiguous reviews, bought one. Really enjoying it, and so does everyone else who sat in it.
I own an MG3, and find it's a FANTASTIC little car. Potential owners need to understand that they are buying a cheap car that will put a smile on your face which is what MG is known for. So to get the best out of it need to turn the negatives into positives. Keep the revs above 2k when changing gear and you won't have any problems, the engine is a rev'e engine so likes to be reved, , if you look at this segment of car a NASP engine of it's size will not have a turbo, 1lt 3cylinder engines will get it BUT all that means is more complicated engineering and maintenance bills to worry about. The suspension was set up for young drivers and come into it's own when you drive on the twisty stuff. The sweet spot for the car is 50-60mph which is what it was designed for A and B road driving. I and my disabled wife have travelled from London to Cornwall with all of her medical stuff and wheel chair in the back and boot with no real problems and found the seats to be fine BUT the MG3 was never designed to be a long distance cruiser.
I test drove this a few weeks ago, I was quite impressed. I drive about 27,000 miles a year, so considering this as a cheap work car to run for 4 years. The interior is great, seats are comfy and all looks well put together. It drives like an early 2000s super mini, and brand new with a 7 year warranty is pretty excellent for using as a car for my small business.
I bought one because of the way it looks compared to a Dacia, all the other cars around today with similar sizes run on either EcoBust or PureTrash turbo engines that fail, with ridiculous wet belts that need changing. MG3 is timing chain driven so no potential issues.
Had a 65 reg one which I liked but it cost less than 4 grand second hand. Can’t believe the prices now on Autotrader for one, averaging 5 grand + with big miles . Still enjoyed mine though, it averaged 42 mpg and I could leave it in fifth gear from 30mph all day long.
The mg3 is a hard sell,unless you really,really really want a brand new car. As you say depreciation is going to hurt, I think most people now think of the mg brand as cheap electric cars, the petrol mg3 seems a decade old (at best) even the moden stuff (no android auto) seems a token gesture. The 7 uear warranty is good,but my money would go on a 2 or 3 year old kia
My favourite thing about the MG3 has always been the looks. I think it's one of the best looking superminis! Hopefully the new generation keeps the vertical taillamps.
Seen a recent flurry of these around, seems to have had a 2nd wind. I have known some folks that have them and all sing the MG3's praises. The interior looks good, and the materials are good compared to some rivals. There are some cheaper materials used, but I think they have used the better materials where it actually matters. Most people buying at this price point aren't bothered by tactile feel of materials. The seats are really comfy. they're very capable and can take four adults easy. They seem to have been underrated for some time in the market it's aimed at.
Have owned one for the last year and not had a single issue. About the engine, it's OK for me. It can go fast if you thrash it.. I don't want to go fast!
Have a 2013 model and it’s been excellent as a first car and extremely reliable. Older engines mean more reliability and less complexity. Complexity will be the killer of newer model cars as it’s expensive to fix. We’re talking these days of a single headlamp that is £500.00 plus etc.
My thought, for what its worth, is that the Dacias have become more and more accepted and desirable, whilst remaining great value for money. Whereas, the MG3 has had 10 years, and really, in everything that's important with the car itself.., it has progressed barely a notch.., yet the price has inflated. Basically, it's the Lada Riva of the 21st century.
I loved my Lada Riva. Utter rubbish but had character that modern cars just don't have. Not sure how you can compare 60's Fiat engineering to a modern hatch. Agree with new car pricing though, has gone ridiculously expensive even for so called budget cars.
I've been looking at the 2023 models. 10.40 0-60, nice interior, part leather seats, 7 year warranty for under 15k On the face of it they look better value than a basic C3 or Sandero essential model
I have a 2016 MG3 and my partner has a 2022 MG3 and we both really like them. I average around 40mpg, it’s coped going across England with 4 people on football away days and never missed a beat. 🤷🏻♂️
I had one of these as a loan car and, for the price, it was actually pretty good but the engine and ride are ancient, I'd buy a pre-owned car for the same price, it is bound to be better!
I’m sure they will do a fully Electric version in the end. A plugin hybrid may be a good fit. A new Car for under £14k what can you complain about a new MINI Cooper is more like £23k now before options,you do get a years free insurance on the Cooper but even still.
Such a pity they don’t provide more engine choices like a 3 cylinder petrol or an economical diesel as I think it’s a really good looking hatchback. It would be on my list if it had better engines.

I've enjoyed my scratchy plastic Auris and that is the slowest car I've owned. Slower than this car. I think I would be happy enough with one of these if 15k was my limit.
Thats what I would have thought, but apparently not. The mg6 initially had a revised k series (n series) but as far as i can gather this and the engines used on the later mg6 are something else. Cant find anything about its development though.

No matter that this engine due to its simplicity is easier to be serviced and can last forever as long as the company offers parts it’s bad due to not been eco friendly enough (no matter that eco friendly turbo car engines die sooner so they are bigger real problem to the environment than higher consumption) You do not watch people like him for his opinion , you watch so you see the interaction with the machine and get an idea if your own.. My Auris is depressing. Scratchy plastics all round, 0-60 that makes this seem quick and no infotainment screen. For under 15k new with 7 year warranty i would find it hard to knock.

You're very kind. I have rented one of these in Australia Tasmania and I have come to the conclusion that the glut of cars spewing out of China in varying degrees of quality have destroyed my enthusiasm of the car industry. I'm no longer surprised, curious or full of any anticipation and it's a travesty that price point is killing other revered manufacturers. I honestly believe the end is here. Incidentally, we're going to pay more in the future for an alternative brand so I'm not clutching a steering wheel made of the worlds hardest plastic as are most of the interior surfaces. This car truely diminished the folly , the fanciful joy I once associated with the motor industry and I'm not generally precious about most things but I can't get away from this sense of melancholy after having driven this affordable aberration. My apologies if I sound so negative but this is my gut feeling, no geopolitical bollocks just following my instinctive engineering DNA. Suzuki Swift is like a luxury car compared to this affordable little car. I honestly can't compare the two. It's as if they come from different planets.

People in the comments argue that everyone who owns an MG is more than happy with it. People in the comments fail to realize two things. 1. These car "review" channels don't make their money from UA-cam views but from manufacturers that give the cars to the test. 2. About 15% of cars have a heap load of problems. Nothing you can do, always been so. Those people will always hate on that car because their experience with it was horrendous. Take a chance. A new car is a new car and 90% of the time it will more than suffice for your needs as long as it's used as intended.
We bought one in 2013. Absolutely dreadful thing, the engine is unforgivable and to think they’ve kept it for over 10 years is baffling - why? Why do they think it’s acceptable? Goodness knows they’ve a lot to catch up with this new MG3 that’s been launched - perhaps the fact the super mini market has shrunk somewhat these days they might sell some.

Nothing wrong with a "budget" priced car. Most know what they are getting for the money. A lot of these about. Styling is good and so is the size ( small for British roads which makes it practical ). However can we get real above the EV MG's. Build quality is poor and many issues have been reported ( especially with the MG4 ) and they are certainly not worth the high asking prices at the moment
High asking price ? Where? What even comes close? $36,000 AUD before government cashback incentives is an absolute steal for a MG 4 with a 7 yr warranty here in Australia. Considering it's RWD and decent battery capacity. What are you hearing is wrong the the 4? It's winning EV car of the year everywhere..
If buying the car, the real cost of ownership is how much depreciation you're going to have to pay for when selling it on. That's where new MG's don't make financial sense over, say, a VW. What Car? avoiding this topic makes the review vague about an ownership / true cost experience.
Ok so checking on auto trader for both cars 2015 year around a 100,000 miles the cheapest Ford fiesta is £3,395 but the cheapest MG3 is £3,985 so more expensive ??
@@David_H-73 I agree. No modern car should have five, I’ve only driven the turbo ones so can’t comment on NA versions. I briefly drove a captur on 2021 plate, that only had 5gears. It was revving it’s bollocks off at 70 (ish)
Absolute junk. I’ve had two MG3s and all have electrical issues. I also have a ZS and the engine failed after 70,000km so MG replaced the engine and now its back in service as it keeps cutting out.

Good review - car is a load of crap. Hired a car for 1 weeks in another city and got this rubbish. I travel a lot and I hire a lot - mowadays as retired i pay so get cheaper cars. MG will never be bought by myself - same as Suzuki Nissan Hyundai Chev Ford etc - after driving one of their cheap cars - as far as I am concerned an awful car means an awful brand. I have never driven a crap Honda or Toyota or BMW or Mercedes or Audi - driven a few I did not like, but never a crap one.
Sandero is significantly better? I don’t think so, owned both and the MG3 drivin properly is quicker, and goes round corners solid no body roll unlike the Sandero you feel like your on two wheels! Sandero is like a tin can in comparison

Apparently it has acceleration lag have you found any problems with that? Also have you found any reliability issues?

Decent wee car but the ancient engine and ancient fuel consumption would bankrupt you. Lucky to see 35MPG on a good day.

From the back, it looks like a Fiat Punto while from the front it looks like a Skoda Fabia. That particular generation MG3 had such amazing looks.
For one going to Enfield every week, the important thing is to have an electric vehicle, otherwise you have £12.50 a week to find!!

Ive got a mk 1 2018 and it's pretty awful tbh. Handling is great though to be fair, can sling it around roundabouts. Quite comfortable on motorways.

If buying the car, the real cost of ownership is how much depreciation you're going to have to pay for when selling it on. That's where new MG's don't make financial sense over, say, a VW. What Car? avoiding this topic makes the review vague about an ownership / true cost experience.

Ok so checking on auto trader for both cars 2015 year around a 100,000 miles the cheapest Ford fiesta is £3,395 but the cheapest MG3 is £3,985 so more expensive ??

I had the displeasure of driving a few of these, it’s dreadful. Avoid it. Five speed gearbox in a modern car is absurd

@@angrymuffinsb the non turbo Polo is still 5 speed, still the same on quite a few small cars. They should be six though considering how much you pay.
@@David_H-73 I agree. No modern car should have five, I’ve only driven the turbo ones so can’t comment on NA versions. I briefly drove a captur on 2021 plate, that only had 5gears. It was revving it’s bollocks off at 70 (ish)

Absolute junk. I’ve had two MG3s and all have electrical issues. I also have a ZS and the engine failed after 70,000km so MG replaced the engine and now its back in service as it keeps cutting out.
They have really destroyed the MG brand. Sad.

Good review - car is a load of crap. Hired a car for 1 weeks in another city and got this rubbish. I travel a lot and I hire a lot - mowadays as retired i pay so get cheaper cars. MG will never be bought by myself - same as Suzuki Nissan Hyundai Chev Ford etc - after driving one of their cheap cars - as far as I am concerned an awful car means an awful brand. I have never driven a crap Honda or Toyota or BMW or Mercedes or Audi - driven a few I did not like, but never a crap one.

Sandero is significantly better? I don’t think so, owned both and the MG3 drivin properly is quicker, and goes round corners solid no body roll unlike the Sandero you feel like your on two wheels! Sandero is like a tin can in comparison
If you plan on going over 50mph invest in some earplugs, these are comically LOUD & SLOW.
Sometimes people give advice through ignorance instead of experience wich is the worst kind of advice and comparing a dacia small suv to a small town car is ridiculous. 👎
