With a DD, I was taught to crank it for 5 seconds or so with fuel off to warm the cylinders and combustion chamber then crank to start. Usually starts pretty quick
you prolly dont care but if you are stoned like me atm you can watch all the new series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my girlfriend for the last days =)
Dmax isn't a bad engine for sure, theres just something we like about older diesels though. but yeah that 6.5 is gonna run for a while, we try to take good care of it
@@mattdotsonrailfanproductio266 yes i agree with you on the IDI's, some very loyal workhorses. My favorite engines are actually Perkins, Detroit is a very very close second
Well when it comes to a ice cold diesel with no glow plugs or block heater to assist cold starting nothing beats a can of ether (starting fluid) with a couple sprays inside of the intake to wake up an old grumpy diesel.
@@spartan117m15 Well before diesels had heater grids put into their intakes and glow plugs using ether was the only way to get them started in cold weather. And sure you can continuiously crank on a diesel to get it started has when you compress air the air heats up but doing that is extremely hard on the starting system. And there is areas during winter like Alaska that truckers run their trucks around the clock has if they shut them down there is no guarantee that they'll get their truck started again even with the aid of starting fluid (ether).
i like 6.2's as well. if you take proper care of them, they will last a good long while. i want to some day take a marine 6.2 and give it a little boost from a supercharger and they do fairly well for power...for an idi. i love the sound those engines produce though!!!!
Same here bud. I got a 82 K10 First Year they put the 6.2 into production. so its a pretty rare motor took me 8 months to find mine... and only half way into the rebuilt and already got close to 1800 into it. Not counting the, Crank, Piston, etc.. the Course thread injectors (82 only) are like $750.. I might swap my 5.7 olds diesel into my 76 Nova and say fuck it
nope, worse. a 6.5 hahaha. Don't get me wrong though, i love those engines, but they do have there limitations. Great work horses, and they always keep on trucking... very very light duty trucking.
Yeah heard you pump the gas pedal twice....funny don't do shit. Cold start foot to the floor....as soon as a fire let off a little till all six are firing. Also starting fluid is a lot cheaper than a new starter! Be nice to that old gal. You are lucky to have a piece of history
Man nothing beats the sound of a cold 2 stroke Detroit governor gallop! Love that sound. And only real diesels smoke, unlike today's junk
With a DD, I was taught to crank it for 5 seconds or so with fuel off to warm the cylinders and combustion chamber then crank to start. Usually starts pretty quick
That's what I was taught too. Poor man's glow plugs lol
I was taught once started never turn it off below 32 degrees.
Why am I so happy to see this single chromed stack blow smoke?!?!

@Grady Max yup, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
"I was asking if you had one"
"Fuck no"
Hahahahaha 😂😂
Getting it cranking well and strong enough a Detroit will always start.
That's one angry sounding detroit, love it
A bit of heat through the intake and it will fire up quicker but at least Screamin Jimmy's can start without heat or a cold start device.
I heard that 6.5 cheechin away in the background, just about to give mine up for a DMAX. Mine’s just worn out and tired.
Dmax isn't a bad engine for sure, theres just something we like about older diesels though.
but yeah that 6.5 is gonna run for a while, we try to take good care of it
ive always wanted to get my hands on an old 6.5 diesel. I want the truck to be a centurion conversion one.
I’m not gonna lie, I am not big on Detroit diesels but yours sounds AMAZING
Thanks! we love it too, what is your go to engine then?
This Guy's Stuff and Stuff, the Ford powerstroke and international harvester IDI engines

This Guy's Stuff and Stuff I loved the chain smoker. But weren’t the injectors blown or something
@@mattdotsonrailfanproductio266 yeah one of them came out in peaces, but it still ran just fine (kinda), even with us doing full throttle pulls haha
The music ,in my heart , I bore, long after it was heard no more.
I’ve never smiled so hard in my life
Great job on the video👍🏻

The worst thing you can do to a diesel is use ether. A couple sprays?! Do you want to blow up it up?!
@@spartan117m15 Well before diesels had heater grids put into their intakes and glow plugs using ether was the only way to get them started in cold weather. @@Blueblur1987 Ether should only be used in emergencies. Ether ruins piston rings=weak compression=fucked engine
Can't beat ether have a 3 cylinder Detroit that won't start with out it
@@alexbuchanan1813 That means your piston rings are fucked
Nice! and the 6.5 is a good horse too. but i'd say the 6.2 is a stronger motor than the 6.5 in ways but has more limitations when pulling

My 86 k30 Army CUCV 6.2 still runs like a champ to this day. 3 speed with 4.56 gears, she's screaming going down the road.
Yup there good driving round town motors.
i have always wanted a CUCV, i would convert it into a manual though.
Nice old Louisville
did i hear him pump the throttle as if diesels have accelerator pumps???
did ya give it a sniff of crack?
also had it sat in that 10 degree unplugged for awhile or just overnight?
i believe a week or so, but at night it did hit negatives. Really the problem was the old batteries in it
I always found it funny that ford had to go to GM for a reliable diesel
Is that a 6.5 diesel in a Chevy in the background?
would be kind of neat to pull start, watch the white smoke, then the black smoke and then the idle.
a 2 second shot of starting fluid will fire them off pronto.
El mejor para la montaña...!!!!!!!

NDROCKS still better then the duramax lol sound horrible
Governor gallop!!

Cosby sauce
Needs an air starter.

Andy Boecker you don’t put starting fluid in a Detroit
How can pumping be bad for it, she's not a carby gasoline engine
You have to hit the gas on the old detroits to set the rack in fueling position.... Dont put your foot to the floor to start any diesel. Smh
The fuel rack starts up wide open on mechanical detroits anyways
