Have you ever grown lettuce indoors during the winter? If not, you should give it a try! This is my third year doing it and I'm HOOKED!

Im growing lettuce in my unheated greenhouse here in NY and its growing nicely but slowly. You have me think about doing some in my basement that stays around 65 degrees and i have a grow station set up. Thank you for all the great information and I cant wait to see updates. I did some winter sowing today and it was wonderful to get my hands dirty😊

Hi Gwen! Definitely try growing a little lettuce in your basement grow room. One year I grew WAY too much so now I'm trying to be better about succession planting it versus planting too much at once (although I still think I planted too much lol). I'll definitely give updates along the way. I'm so glad that you have started your winter sowing. It'll be so fun to see the baby plants germinating in spring! 😊🌱

Last year was the first year that I tried to grow anything. It did not go well. I planted lettuce tomatoes and bell peppers in the spring in the full sun of south Georgia. I had no idea that they were cool weather plants. So I am about to start a few varieties under my grow lights and see how it goes.

The beauty of gardening is learning each year from our previous years' experiences. I'm so glad that you'll be trying lettuce again.
I love growing lettuce now in December so that I can harvest them in the winter but then I'll grow some more later on which I can plant out in some pots for my porches. You can plant lettuce starts / transplants out 3-4 weeks before your average last frost date. Here in New Hampshire, my average last frost date is about May 15, so that means I can plant my lettuce plants out between April 17-24. So based on that, I'll want to sow some lettuce plants 4 weeks prior (about March 20) so l so that they have some size to them when they go out. I'll be adding all these dates to my calendar so that I don't forget.
You can do the same thing. Figure out what your average last frost date it, count back 3-4 weeks, and that's when you should have some lettuce plants ready to go out for planting. Count back 4 weeks from that, and that's when you'd be starting some lettuce seeds indoors for outdoor planting. Here's a great website that I use: extension.unh.edu/resource/growing-vegetables-when-plant-your-vegetable-garden-fact-sheet. 😊🥬

I love growing lettuce indoors! I grow them in the summer because they bolt quickly. I like Jericho romaine. It does great indoors .

Hi Jeannie! I agree that growing lettuce indoors slows them down from bolting too quickly. I also like the fact that I don't have to clean much (if any at all) dirt from the leaves. Thanks for the suggestion on the Jericho romaine. I'll have to try it out! 🥬😊

Nice but it wouldn’t work here, I have to plant a full 4x8 foot bed of lettuce to keep up with demand. I mesn a full bed one giant wide bed starting in mid March then a second bed mid May and again Around August first. I spread leaf lettuce seed on the soil then turn a leaf rake tines up and gently pull it across the bed just letting the weight of the rake do the work no down pressure. Learned it on my first job out of high school.repairing lawns with grass seeds after the utility company’s dug up someone’s lawn.Depending on temperature I get four or five cuttings in the spring and the fall one goes until a hard freeze. August first is a great time to plant zucchini and cucumbers again, an old market gardener told in the spring everyone has zucchini and cucumbers in the fall nobody has them but everyone wants them.😜

Hi John. Oh wow! I guess you really like fresh lettuce. That's awesome! I really need to be better about eating a salad every night. 🥗 Having it easy to get to in the kitchen this winter will be a good start lol. That's a great tip about starting some zucchini and cucumber around 8/1. I think I'll have to give that a try. 🥒😊

@ family loves it, as far as 8/1 it works great, one or two pickings before frost.
