  • Here we are looking at best practice how to ride in light wind. And how to get up on foil. A mix of good practice, proven techniques and a test ride with the ENSIS Score 5.2 wing. Is it enough with a 5.2M wing in light wind?

    What are your experiences and/or obstacles to get up on foil in light wind? Have you got the right sized material... Let me know below your setup and experience!

      Only Windsurfing from years ago. Own a 6' 130 L board, my foil is sized at 1950. largest wing is Cabrenia 6 m Crosswind 2. My biggest obstacle is my weight for wind under 10 knots, but maybe luck and conditions will come my way.

      @@johnschukei1708 John, we all suffer to get up on foil in less than 10 knots. With a gust of wind we can come up and then stay up riding in 10 knots. But it’s a lot of technique to pump up on foil in only 10 knots. So don’t be discouraged if you’re struggling!

    Great tutorial / info video as usual Fredric. Can you give some specs on the wing: Weight, pressure, foil ratio and stab size? Looks like you might have hit a sleepy fish, turtle or maybe a plastic bag or… your foil was mistaken and hit by a (large) marine predator 😳🤣

      Thank you Frederic! The Ensis score weighs in at approx 2,7 kg. pumps to 6-8 PSI (I prefer 8). The foil: Starboard E-type 1700cm2 with a Starboard Stab Razor 250. Starboard carbon mast of 92 cm. Yeah, I don't know what it was, probably some piece of wood floating just under the surface! Gave me a bit of a scare though...

    Nice! Cool! Thank you for your advise...
    ..... but....at around 10 knots, I would go out with my 7.0 m2 Duotone Slick and 2000 cm2 Starboard S-Type front foil instead of 5.2 m2!! (I weigh 75 kg)

    enjoy watching, as well as your other clips. i am learning right now, and own a ensis 5.2 score. being 85 kilos with gear on, i need more wind in the sail, but love this sail. even when i am very over powered, i can get up and going until i turn and glad i where a pfd and helmet. I've tried getting on foil in lighter air, on 6m but unable, you make it look too easy!!!!! Think my foil is 1900. agree with you, need to wait until theirs resistant in the wing (puff)before doing anything but taxiing upwind.

      Hi John, Thank you! Good to hear you are into wing foiling. You have sooo much fun ahead of you! 😃 Your technique will improve and you will do things you can't do now. That is certain. You will also be fine with smaller material further on. The more you practice, the faster you will get there. That need not to be an objective but progression will come and it is fun to see that you actually get better. One of the trickiest things to learn is to get up on foil (and stay up), and then to turn.

      I weigh 75 kg, but use my 7.0 m2 Duotone Slick at low wind...and I even want to try F-one Strike CWC 8.0 m2 since I have seen a few review of it that it is very light.. 😁.. I am a beginner wing foiler myself, but as a windsurfer and a kitesurfer, I rather be a bit overpowered than underpowered. It is just my personal preference though.

      @@Tobeon2 That is a serious wing you are using. BIG! Do you not find the slick too big to handle? You must be in an area with a lot of low wind. I have a friend here in Mallorca, he weighs about 85-90 kg. And he’s fine with a 6M Strike CWC from 12 knots. He’s a long time kiter but got into wing foil last year. Where do you ride?

      @@nickburfitt1131 Hey Nick, you’re welcome! If the wind conditions are weak you want the Score as the score are a bit more powerful. You could go for a 6.2. You can also manage well with a 5.2 like I have if you have a good mix of wind strengths. The Spin will be easier for easy manoeuvres like jibes, tack turns and so on. The Score gives more power. In conclusion. A 6 for more power but less handling a 5 for the opposite. And Score for more power and Spin for easier handling. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Stay safe!

    • @wingfoil_mallorca

    • @wingfoil_mallorca
      @wingfoil_mallorca  2 роки тому

      Hello Gust hunter! Yes you can! However you would be hard pressed to get up on foil in 8 knots. But if you have a gust of 10-11 and you have a good technique pumping the wing that should work. But to ride in wind less than 10 knots you would be better off with a 6m wing or maybe even a 7m wing. What do you ride with and where do you chase gusts?
