      @bababababababa6124 День тому +161

      Eh, I’m not sure if your analogy works as Real Madrid is already a big club. Although them giving away their best player for free would essentially be the same as what Dallas did, at least Madrid is still a big club and had a team full of superstars at the time and could probably still win trophies even without Ronaldo.
      Dallas ain’t that guy though, they’re a smaller NBA side with limited success and they only very rarely get a superstar like Luka. So it would be more like teams such as Nottingham Forest, Villa or Newcastle giving away their best players for free to Arsenal or Liverpool.

      @@BIGTHANKSHEESHno, not really. The big difference is that Madrid could afford to lose Ronaldo. Obviously it would be stupid of them to give someone like CR7 away, but that team was so insanely stacked regardless and they would probably still win trophies even without him. The Mavs however literally couldn’t afford to lose Luka, Luka was the type of player they should have locked down on a lifetime contract and thrown away the key. Yet they traded him for scraps.
      In short, Madrid needed Ronaldo ALOT less than the Mavs needed Luka. You guys think Madrid was a one-man team with Ronaldo, when in reality even their bench squad at the time was better than a lot of other teams.

    For me, the closest equivalent to this Luka deal is if Arsenal gave away Bukayo Saka to Real Madrid in exchange for Antonio Rudiger:
    1. The deal doesn't make any sense because Madrid sacrificed their best defender when their defensive depth is shambolic kind of like the Lakers
    2. The deal doesn't make any sense because why the hell did Arsenal sacrifice their best player who could contribute their team so much for 7-10 years like the Mavs did to Luka
    3. Defensive-wise, Arsenal is the most stacked defensive team in Europe and it's now all about "Defense wins you titles" bs like the Mavs
    4. No offense to Arsenal fans and Mavs fans but their team is not comparable to the sheer size of Real Madrid/Lakers

    About Fabrizio Romano rant. Agree with overall sentiment but couple disagreements.
    1) Luka trade was a bombshell but usually through guys like Shams Charan and up until recently Adrian Wojnarowski, most of NBA trades were not surprising. Reports about trade requests etc happen all the time.
    2) NBA is in such state that the trades generate more buzz than the actual sport itself. Those kinds of news is pretty much the most we hear about the NBA nowadays rather than games themselves. Fuels conspiracies that the trade was engineered by the league itself to generate interest. In short-term it worked since it's the Super Bowl week and NBA has the biggest buzz, but will it matter in long term? Probably not

    I didn't realize how wild this was until i realized that the players don't get a choice in being traded and what team they go to. In football at the end of the day the player has a say in whether they leave or not (ofc there are weird circumstances but as a general statement players have the ability to choose). When my friend was like "yeah no he didn't choose this and he cant say no" i was MINDBLOWN

    It's like Mbappe for Rudiger/ VVD.
    Luka and Mbappe are both scoring machines, great playmakers who are perennial MVP candidates at the peak of their career. They both switched teams in the late 2010's that sparked a new era for their respective teams. Dallas and PSG are also similar, considering how they didn't fully set their franchise guy up for success. Rudiger and VVD are similar to AD in the sense that they are incredible defenders and can score. They might not have the best playmaking abilities, but they are above average at everything. I'd rank Rudiger and AD pretty similarly, both overall and in terms of defending.

    In football terms, this is like trading Messi (Luka) with Rio Ferdinand (AD) in 2012. Luka's potential is much bigger than Vini Jr.'s potential in football. Vini Jr. already became the #2 option in Real Madrid. Luka will stay as #1 until he's like 37-38.

    If you want to compare the event itself to an event that actually happened in football it would be Messi leaving for free from barca, fans insanely mad, everyone thinking Barcelona did the wost possible thing ever. The only reason Barcelona is making a comeback (even tho they're financially fricked) is because they have solid foundations in reputation and la masia. If they were the equivalent of the mavs in size the club would get relegated and possibly dissolve.

    People make the VVD comparison a lot when comparing this trade to football. But I think there's a bit of a difference because while VVD is still arguably the best player itw in his position, same can't be said about AD. Also comparing Lautaro doesn't quite capture how much Luka means to Dallas, there's also the fact that Dallas already has multiple good players in AD's position. There also needs to be a parallel between the Lakers and an equally demonic football club.
    If I had to put it in football terms, this is like if Arsenal's sporting directors went to Madrid behind Arteta's back, gave away Saka to Real Madrid and they took an aging injury-prone Alaba and some failed wonderkid youth player like Renier in return.

About the Spurs, they did blow a 2-0 lead to the Thunder in the 2012 WCF, but that was a more of a young team rising to the occasion and maturing before everyone's eyes rather than an old team getting outplayed and outpaced.

      This was a great trade for the Lakers. Sure short term defense may not be great but it is not like they were going to do anything in the Western conference this year. They basically got a franchise player in his prime for an over the hill star and a first round pick which likely going to be a late round (and worthless pick). It way easier to get some defensive stoppers than it is to get a franchise player. Compare this trade for a 30 year old Rudy Gobert - A star player and 4 first round picks. The lakers made out like bandits.

    • @juansebastianraadmeza9405
      @juansebastianraadmeza9405 День тому

      The Lakers may hace destroyed their own defense, but they now have a generational talent that still has around 7-8 great years. In that time they can build a strong team around him to win 2-3 championships (and don’t get me started with the economic profit it will genérate).
      Meanwhile the Mavs have shortened the time window in which they can win a championship since they are now a bunch of old players, and the fans have officially lost interest in the team, which will genérate an economic loss

    • @moonjelly5
      @moonjelly5 День тому +1

      The Lakers are fine because this wasn't about the short term. Before this trade, the Lakers were stuck in Basketball Hell, good enough to make the play-ins and maybe the first round, not good enough to make it any farther, in the no-mans land of drafting, and with LeBron a year or two from retiring.
      Luka gives them a superstar to base the team around after LeBron retires (at the end of this or next year). It is much easier to put supporting pieces around a generational player than to find a generational player, especially if you are a team that players see as a draw (which the Lakers are).

    I love the Lautaro Martinez comparison, I think it’s pretty spot on. Not only have both guys been considered one of the very best at their position, not only are they both still in their prime, but they’ve both made it to the final of their sport’s biggest tournament very recently and lost.
    I will say that I like the comparison of if Inter sent Lautaro to Manchester United. Like the Lakers, they are a storied team that has fallen on tough times because of incompetent management and this is the kind of move that would bail them out, just like what the Luka trade does for the Lakers. Maybe Lautaro for Luke Shaw or Bruno would be a decent comparison.

      There's a conspiracy that Adam silver (Head of the NBA) pushes this trade to make Luka play for the NBA's biggest market team, LA Lakers, along with their biggest star, lebron james, in order to boost rating. I personally believe this to some extent, because no way any gm would trade a player that potentially will become the face of the league in a few years time when they have spent previous year to try build a roster around Luka and just reached the final last year just because he's overweight, while he still puts some number
