Removing 20 years of Grease - Cast Iron Skillet Restoration

- After finding out my mate was still using this abomination, I decided I would clean up his frying pan for him. I had planned for a quick restoration, but a surprise enamel finish and a broken handle slowed things down.

Update: If you watched this and are thinking about trying it, look up how to do a Lye Bath, as it may be easier and better! I will try it next time a find a good skillet.
If you'd like, you can buy me a coffee too!

"Would you have done anything differently?" Yeah I would have just thrown it out and got him a new one, lol, good on you for restoring it!! I kind of hate to think of what his kitchen looks like lol
His kitchen isn't that bad, he was just hard up on the old saying to never wash your skillet.
That turned out so nice. Excellent work! Cheers!
Thank you very much!
There are a number of methods to clean them without using an abrasive method-oven cleaner, lye soak, electrolysis, & molasses soak to name a few. When you use abrasive methods, you also break down the factory seal. If you break down the factory seal, you'll need to reseal with 5 to 10 heat & oil sequences using a heat settings that is different from when you are just generally oiling. It does not hurt to wash them. The trick is to dry & oil them properly before putting up. If you don't dry & oil properly, the pans will rust, which why folks adopted a don't wash approach.
Thanks for the tips. I have been looking out for more and want to give the Lye bath a try. I've heard its a lot easier and more effective.
lye soak in particular, that pan would be bare cast iron after an about an hour in a lye bath.
Nice job, oven cleaner works well too without all the scrubbing. I use my grandmother's skillet on a daily basis and the inside is as smooth as a baby's bottom!
I agree, but the smell is so bad! Thanks for the advice.
Top job! Did the same a few years back. Used olive oil to coat after every use. Never washed, just cleaned it out with paper towel and a light coat of olive oil. After about a month she was fully seasoned and shiny black and working better than ever.
That what my mate would do, but didn't give it a thorough clean every now and then. Builds up over time!
@@RestorationEndeavours Yep. Salt heated in the pan and then wiped around with paper towel gives it a good clean too. It gets hot so take care! 😉
Hi there where can I find that scratching tool at the beginning of your video?
Wow! you sure are more than handy and know what you are doing esp. with the handle restoration.
Thank you. I am more into wood lately, but can't beat cleaning up something this dirty.
I have a pot from my mother in law who got it from her grandmother! I have literally used a knife to hack and pick off the cracks. I have been looking for this video or one similar for YEARS
Look into doing a Lye Bath. If I were to do this again, that would be the path I would go down. Just be careful as the chemicals can be harsh!
Amazing " it's a beautiful pan
You did a wonderful job!
Thanks heaps!
😮 I would have never thought that to have blue underneath all of that... nice work
I didn't expect it either.
Well done
Thank you!
Great results buddy!👍
Thanks 👍
That was excellent.
That’s a beautiful pan! I love cast iron.
Me too! My friend has been given strict instructions on how to keep it looking good from now on.
Awesome video.
Thanks!
Hi buddy, i loved this restoration 👏👏👏👍👍👍🙂 like
Thanks heaps!
Great refurbished thanks
Thanks!
Excellent job. I have an old Rayburn stove in the same condition as this skillet I have clean it with a chemical to get most off but need to attack it with a scraper like you have done. Does it scratch the enamel ?
I didn't even know this was enamelled when I started, but besides some small marks that I think may have been there already, it came out fine. The razor scraper was good as I could avoid the corners of the blade digging in.
Omg I been looking for a video like this my mom had an old cast iron pot outside for years full of grease. Had to pry open the top. I decieded to clean it up, but its so much gunk. I soaked it 60 40 vinegar it only took a little off. Imma look into the lye as well. Thanks!
I would definitely go down the lye bath path to do this over. Just be careful with the stuff, it can be horribly bad for you. Good luck!
Thanks alot I appreciate it!
Enameled cast iron can't go in the electrolysis tank so we have to soak it in lye or Purple Power cleaner. Either one will remove the buildup without harming the enamel. All we need to avoid is scraping it or using an abrasive stainless steel scouring pad. This will damage the enamel.
Thanks for the info! I am looking out for more cast irons pans etc. and will try a Lye bath next.
Great job!😊
Thank you!
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Incredible
Wow, the enamel is really indestructible.
I'm just glad I didn't swing a hammer at it!
This video is worth a thousand likes. What kind of scraper did you use? Would you list the tools you used, please?
Thank you .The scraper is just a Stanley Knife blade holder that costs a couple of dollars. I also used a brass wire brush and brass wire disc for my grinder. Other than that, just a lot of elbow grease.
@@RestorationEndeavours thank you so much for answering my questions.
Хорошо, что всё удачно получилось. Успехов Вам!
The handle should be keyed into the aluminium part at the pan to stop it twisting when in use.
I agree. When it does start to get loose, I will probably use a pin on it. Thanks for watching!
I have a few rusty cast iron pans that I've been wanting to clean using an E-tank (electrolysis).
This is on my to-do list as well! I just don't have the pans yet 😅
@@RestorationEndeavours I have the pans... I'm just a little intimidated by the electricity part! 🙃
The threaded rod should have been cut off leaving a 1/4 inch protruding, this allows for a step bushing to slip over the rod with a tap drill size to guide the drill then the original thread can be used. Second the wood handle should be carved to fit inside the aluminum collar, this would prevent the handle from coming loose and spinning when the load of food inside the pan is uneven.
Good info. Thanks for the tips. I think the handle may be due for replacing anyways. It was a little shorter than I would prefer.
On the bottom of mine is bad, inside it is not,I use a razors blade to get it off, still working on it
Terribly neglected frying pan, its owner is an untidy dirty man.
You have restored her dignity.
He is a great cook and usually very clean. I think he took the 'never wash cast iron' phrase to the extreme. Thanks for watching!
You shouldn't use soap on a cast iron, but that doesn't mean you should never CLEAN it, lol. This looked less like seasoning and more like your mate never cleaned off any of the grease, especially off the bottom. Did you give it back them with gentle but firm words or adopt it as your own?
I think he would rinse it out and give it a wipe, and it just built up over time to a point he couldn't clean it anymore. Then it just kept going. He has it back now. I should go see how it has held up and post a picture!
super
Thank you
Abomination it was but no more - great job mate!
Thanks for watching!
OMG. so easy. Simply build a very hot fire and put that iron skillet in that huge blazing fire for hours. Leave over night. Next day you have a brand new skillet. If wooden handle remove FURST but that is not a very old skillet. I got mine at flea mklinux. I loved Ike’s it up and must have been OVER one hundred years old!! I gave my moms over one hundred yrs old. They were made different. Next day I took mine out of my bonfire. Brushed it off. It was brand new. I washed with soap and water dried well with paper towel and oiled inside well. That week I made cornbread. Delicious. Can’t imagine making corbread in anything ele. It will not be cornbread!!! It cost me three dollars. NEVER COON ANY THING LUKE TOMATO IN CAST IRON. WASH DRY AND OUL PLACE CLEAN PAPER TOWEL INBOTTOM AND PUT IN CABINETS. MINEWAS CRUSTED OVER EVEN WORSE THAN THIS ONE
I have been on the hunt for one for myself. They all just are so expensive even if they haven't been cleaned. Thanks for the tips!

A lye bath works a lot better
I have been looking for more to try different methods on.
you do not use power tools t nor a screwdriver nor scrapper to strip cast-iron
You can, there are just much better ways. I am looking for another cast iron item to do a lye bath method to show why it is better though.
Normally I would agree but he did a pretty good job not messing it up. I guess as long as your careful and don't overdo it
Only the inside of the pan should be seasoned, the outside could almost be a fire hazard. LOL
I always do the inside and outside of cast iron. I thought it was standard? I'll have to do some research. Thanks for letting me know.
I do both to prevent rust all over. Never had an issue with fires.
You are entirely wrong
That was gross. You cook food for humans in that? 🤮
Skillet or a frying pan
I kind of use them interchangeably. Though when I think of a skillet, it's always as cast iron.
