I think your reviews are fantastic. Thank you for always being thorough, you're helping us novices navigate this new world of Atmos and 3D Surround Sound.
I’m flattered. Thank you. It’s a messy place to navigate. I’m learning from all viewers as well. Thank you all.

I appreciate that!
Awesome comparison video. Just what I needed !
Hey Peter. I’m so happy I found your channel! Keep up the great work 👍 Best regards from Denmark
I agree. Great job Peter. Cheers from France.
So lovely to have viewers from all around the world appreciating my work! Thank you all for the shout out!
Well done peter , proud of you home boy 🇸🇬
Thanks, Peter. This helps with our budgeting for the new system.
Cool. Always happy to hear that someone benefits from one of my videos.
The technical setup is EXCELLENT Thank you Peter! I like thunder base .. i did hear it on these two units. ..better on the Beam Unit
Glad you enjoyed it
Just pre ordered a arc after watching this video
“ most of us have only two ears, not five or seven, and most of us don’t have them on the top of our heads” 🤣
But you can tell when there is a plane overhead right? Or if a car is horning at you from behind?
Thanks my friend. The video I was looking for.
Nobody does a review like you!
I watched this on my puny phone and there is definite discernible difference to the quality . The beam surprising sounds good as well but the sound stage is definitely narrower and more happening in front of you. With the Arc, sound is more spread out and nuanced. Some parts seems thin and lack oh Omph but we may be missing some details in the up firing speakers and placement when it sounded thinner
This review is a game changer for me to know that there is indeed quite discernible quality difference placing both samples side to side
You may have just made my life a bit tougher 😄
Happy to have been able to communicate the differences across well enough! Actually; while recording I can tell the arc is significantly clearer and wider and the bass notes are more evenly spread out. But the recording fails to communicate that well enough. They said, the beam is really quite amazing for something half the price.
You can tell the bass from the beam is actually keeping up with the arc and no doubt helped by the 3 passive radiators. But it does sound a little boomy and flabby listening to it.
Peter Pee how was the Atmos experience of sound placement? Does it feel real?
The ear level sound field is good enough. But the ceiling bounce might be a longer stretch. I think the Atmos TOP firing speakers are a little too close together to give any effect of lateral panning for the heights channel. And my ceiling is probably a bit too high to get it right.
Happy with my 5.1 Sonos Setup😊
Great that you are happy with it! I love my Sonos too.
You can tell the arc is much better but actually the beam for being half the size and half the cost is pretty good also.
That I agree. The arc is better but I cannot say it’s twice as good given that it’s twice the price.
Peter Pee hey so does the beam support Dolby audio such as Dolby digital plus or what does it support? I’m having issues on what it exactly supports for audio.
The beam supports Dolby digital. Without the need for Atmos since it doesn’t support Atmos channel the dd+ doesn’t really make a big difference.
Fantastic comparison Peter!
Thank you! Hope the recording was ok! Use headphones for best results!
@@PeterPee I did! And it was astounding. Keep up the good work Peter!
Hi peter I just recently purchased a Sonos beam and I noticed that I did not have a HDMI(ARC) on my tv, I have regular HDMIs but not ARC, I attempted to use the Adapter that it comes in the box but my tv does not support that option neither, is there an adapter that I can purchase or what can I do, thanks!!
Oh dear. The only way to get output from tv to Sonos arc is through hdmi arc port or optical port. I am afraid you’re out of options. Unless you get a hdmi splitter that outputs optical then use the optical to hdmi adaptor that came with the Sonos arc.
I currently have the Beam+Sub+Ones setup for surround sound. Because of our entertainment center, the beam sits on top of the tv. I’m thinking on upgrading to Arc, but I don’t know if it’s worth the upgrade. How would the Arc sound if I have to put it above the TV?
If you put it above the tv, you will have to angle it down significantly. Not knowing the height of your placement, I’d recommend starting position of pointing the front of the arc towards your ear level while you’re seated.
Think better to add the Sub instead of changing beam (bought 2 weeks ago) to Arc ? My TV is LG OLED TV 55'' EG920T (4 yrs old). Also bought 2 Sonos One SL for surround sound 2 days after I setup the beam lol
Yes, definitely get the sub than upgrade the Beam. And I understand why you would get the surround sound speakers 2 days after setting up the beam. Sonos does have that effect. :)
Great vid! I wasn't able to get the Dolby Trailer Downloader to run on MacOS(crash after selecting USB drive). Is there any other way of getting that per channel noise atmos video? Odd it isn't available to download on the Windows page.
Edit: Nevermind! got it working, need to run the app from inside the applications folder to function.
Ops sorry, I wasn't able to help. :)
How did you manage to make the app work? It still crashes on my Mac when in applications folder...
I was waiting for your review, I still can’t believe that the Arc is that good, I guess I’ll have to try it myself, some reviewers have compared it to the Nakamichi 7.1 system and are claiming Arc is better, a real 5.1, 7.2... setup worse than a soundbar?, I’ll wait to try it
Sound is always subjective as different people have different taste. You can take my opinion as proxy. Someone who owns a full 7.2.4 setup costing $25k will tell you this is crap.
Oh wait, I did have a 7.2.4 setup before. And I truly think that for this price at $800 and the size and lack of cables running all over the house, this sounds GREAT.
amazing! well this is a great opportunity to buy it 😁
Thanks for the video. Im looking into getting Sonos, but I can get the old Playbar and the old Sub for the same price as the new arc on its own. Is the arc really worth it? I can buy the arc now, but then I will only be able to buy the sub at a later stage. I'm not sure if I must future proof myself or get the bass right away with the older speaker. Is the playbar better then the beam? I suppose it is. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for our compliments! The playbar is really quite a difficult product to push right now. It’s really quite Long in the tooth and it’s been many years. For the lack of a hdmi arc port I wouldn’t want to recommend it. Hdmi simplifies the connection and unifies the volume control nicely. And there is the Google assistant or Alexa if that’s your thing. Playbar doesn’t have. Beam and arc both has it. My recommendation is to consider the beam if the price of the playbar is similar to the beam. It’s a much more modern product.
@@PeterPee Ok. Thanks for the advise. And between the Sub? Is there a massive difference between gen2 and gen3 ? As the gen2 is much cheaper. Or is the gen3 future proof?
You’re only going to be buying gen 3 for future proofing. So far as I can see, the only difference is the connect button looking nicer. Inside there is a better processors and memory and I think the networking. But other than that, including those, your experience won’t change. If you can get a usd 100 off, go for the gen 2.
using my AirPods Pro earbuds the beam sounds pretty good even without the subwoofer test.
Yes, the recording does capture the fact that the beam is able to project bass pretty well. But it doesn’t sufficiently capture the fact that the soundstage is a lot wider on the Arc.
Wow I was always skeptical on these comparison audio reviews. But this is done very well!
Listened on my HD6+ on my PC. Will try again in the basement with my Monitor Audio 5g 300
I recognise that it still won’t be idea if I don’t have much more expensive equipment but I think you can get a relative feel.
@@PeterPee I watched 5 of your video and they are great! Keep it going!
@@PeterPee Hey Peter. A little off topic.
I want a unit that works with Alexa for music. There is the Sonos ONE, Move, BEAM, and Arc.
I was thinking of getting the Arc but was too big. So only Beam vs Move vs One.
For just music and not heavy base, which one is better?
That’s cool! Thanks for your views. I hope they are not too Long. I try to make the videos shorter and I begin with that goal in mind but I always always end up with a video that I feel it’s too Long for viewers to watch all the way through. I try to make it easier and give summary answers early on in the video so that if viewers have no time, they will get the answers first.
If you want it just for music, don’t get the beam, the channel separation is not that good. The move is good but a little pricey and you’re paying for the battery and the Bluetooth function for mobility. For the same price as the beam and the move, a pair of Ones will sound GREAT for music. You get true stereo and the sound is actually very decent! My vote goes to a pair of Sonos Ones!
Loving the videos! Got a question. Would you recommend buying the Arc and investing in the play ones at a later date or buying the Beam and play ones straight away and maybe investing the subwoofer later on? Keep up the great work!
daviegee9 I’d go for the arc and getting the ones at a later time
Probably also depends on the size of the room as well as tv
@@PeterPee I’m 11 feet away from my tv. I already have this play ones. My room is wider probably 13 large or so. I was thinking the beam with the ones for the rears but should I also go with the sub. The beam is 350$ Canadian and the sub 750$. What should I do. I’m in a small medium size room. Is the sub worth it or just start with beam and rears?
Fantastic review 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Hi, I though that the sonos beam is not compatible dolby atmos! Can you confirm that? Thanks
Peter Pee, thank you for the video. I currently have Beam + 2x Ones for surround. My plan is to get the new sub at some point. Would you recommend upgrading the Beam to Arc as well or in real scenario that would not make a huge difference?
I used headphones when watching your video, but it was a bit difficult to notice the difference myself :(.
The difference is hard to tell over a recording. But in person, the scale of the sound from the arc is quite amazing. My recorder can’t capture the scale. Only the bass and treble to a degree. So in terms of pure bass and treble you’ll feel that the beam and arc are actually quite close.
I would recommend you adding the sub first in any case. The sub is a Long Long shelf life product. It will last you to the point you upgrade to the arc; and then more.
@@PeterPee Thanks for the reply. Completely agree. Looking forward to get my hands on it. I am trying to find at the moment if C9 will passtrough the DD 5.1 from my Shield. Seems like there was a recent fix via firmware update for C9, so crossing fingers it will be fine and will purchase a C9.
Read about it. Actually I hope there is a more recent fix than the recent fix that broke the support for Atmos.
Great clear and concise video. I have the Beam with rear speakers but considering the Arc. Is it really going to make much of a difference if all I do is stream from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc. I know most programs on streaming platforms don’t utilize Atmos so I’m wondering if it’s overkill for me. Thanks
Physically, the longer dimensions of the arc already guarantees a wider soundstage. Not to mention that it’s approximately twice as powerful as I have tested it. And I’m not comparing Atmos vs non-Atmos.
Awesome!! Thanks again- and thanks for showing us where you got the test videos!! So helpful!!
I hope you can at least see the Atmos logo show up with those test videos! It made me very satisfied!
Peter Pee , I even see the Atmos logo when playing from my Apple TV with Atmos compatible movies and tv shows in Apple TV+ content and movies purchased from iTunes.
Hello I really liked your review and is a really good demonstration of the capabilities of each product. That being said I just recently bought a gen 3 sub and 2 ones. They did not have the beam or the arc avaliable but I am grateful for that so I could research on my own. The sub and the ones are amazing. I am very impressed with the sub. I live in a apartments and can not have it at the max because it is extremely loud. I plan on getting a house because I love to see my movies to sound like the theater. I would like to know if either the beam or arc would have Dolby atmos with my samsung tv 7 series. Thank you i appreciate your time.
Only the Arc is Atmos capable. The Beam is not. As for the Samsung 7 series, it can only pass through lossy atmos. In other words, if you have a shield 2019 you can pass netflix and Amazon Prime TV atmos titles over *IF* your TV supports full passthrough. I am unfamiliar with the 7 series from Samsung and can’t confirm for you.
I have a LG C7, Sonos Beam with 2 x S1's as surrounds. My room is approx 4m x 5m. Is it worth the upgrade to the Arc with my current setup? i believe from previous vids Peter that the C7 is Atmos compatible with the Arc?
Yes. Viewers have confirmed that it works. But some viewers have problems. The hardware and the streaming platform you’re using on the streamer also matters. I have figured that the tv might not be the issue. The encoding on the file as well as Netflix or prime matters too.
@@PeterPee Thanks for the reply Peter. My Beam with 2 S1's sounds great. Is it worth the £800 upgrade to the Arc or should I stick with what I have?
I Guess it really depends on which part of the world you’re from. 4m x 5m is considered largish in singapore. :) can fit an arc la.
Great work as always Peter, thank you and I hope that your voice is getting better. I am currently considering buying a Sonos Arc and Sub for our main TV room/ lounge. However I am a little concerned about the size of the room and vaulted ceiling’s. The room is approx. 38m2 and at its highest point 4 meters . Do you think that the arc is powerful enough to fill a space like this? Thanks again for sharing the great content!
If you are getting a sub together with the Arc then yes! First, the sub will fill up that space with a lot of lower frequencies. And second, with the sub taking over the lower frequencies, the Arc can use the amps to power more of the mids and higher frequencies. A good combo for a large space! I am in a 24m2 space with 4m ceiling throughout. And it works well! When you have the appetite for it, adding rear surrounds will also help to fill up the space with more sound.
High quality review. Thanks.
hello, which do you recommend that has a more balanced sound?
Thanks
Nice comparison!
I’ve had Samsung soundbar I’ve had LG soundbar and Sonos Arc soundbar and nothing compares to the Sonos Arc, it’s the best soundbar I’ve had/heard! The sub is just wow it blows both the Samsung and LG Subs right out of the water. I was watching the Tyson fight and when the music started to play damn I thought I was at club it sounds so crisp and clear! The only thing I have a problem with is you can only connect sub and rears to the arc using Wifi I would like more options like Bluetooth and you should also have the option to hardwire it to the arc as well because in all honesty that is the best way to hook it up period!
You are definitely right about the sound quality. I would also say that there is a lot more headroom in the sound. Connection wise, I think the Sonos connectivity is about as stable as it gets for multi room systems. If you are having trouble, you might consider just plugging one of your speakers to the router directly. It will help with the signal.
@@PeterPee No I’m not having any issues and I also believe Sonos has signal booster you can use as well if you’re having trouble. I’m just a firm believer that hardwire is the best, nothing will beat that especially if you don’t have wifi your Sonos is pretty much useless and I’ve had my internet go down a few times.
Best arc review yet. You awesome 😎
Thanks zaheer!
Amazing video! Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Hi Pete, Love your videos. I'm currently tossing up between an arc with sub, or a beam with sub and 2 x one SLs, the arc and sub is slightly more expensive at the moment. But I have a new OLED TV which is ATMOS capable so I'm not sure whether to take advantage of that, or if I will still be happy with the beam set up. Room is roughly 5 x 5m . Thanks
If you have an OLED TV and is Atmos capable, go for the ARC for sure! Add the surrounds later a year from now. Don't need to buy that upfront. The Arc also has side woofers which can simulate surround to a certain extend.
BUT, make sure your TV has HDMI ARC output ya?
Thanks, Peter!
You are very welcomed! Pleasure is mine.
Just wondering if the gap is smaller between Beam + Sub vs Arc + Sub than if you just compare Beam vs Arc by themselves? It seems that the Arc provides more clarity and separation but my tv doesn't support Dolby Atmos so I was thinking to get the Beam + dual Subs + ones for the rear. Would that be ok for a fairly large room with high ceilings? I'd like to get the Arc but at the moment it doesn't make sense.
Yes, the gap is smaller when you compare that way.
If you are choosing between BEAM+SUB+SURROUND vs ARC+SUB, then surely take the BEAM combo. The immersion will be created with the surround speakers.
Camera quality is amazing
I’m using a Sony a6400 with a sigma 16mm F1.4 lens. Took me a while to figure out the correct camera combination to use!
@@PeterPee well it's definitely working , and also after watching the review I actually got the beam so thanks ✌️
Woah! That’s cool! Nice!
very thorough!
Hi Peter, congratulations for channel, I think you’re doing a fantastic work. After watching your video I’m wondering, which Soundbar is better for music?
Thank you! For soundbar, I’ll manage your expectations. None of them are going to come very close to delivering optimal performance for music. But if you were forced to choose due to form factor, I’d say the playbase actually does very well all round. The “sub woofer” enclosure in the playbase actually delivers decent bass!
Hi again Peter, I meant which Soundbar with Sonos sub included, I forgot to tell you.
Then I’d give it to the arc!
If you had a choice between the Arc and two One SL’s or a beam, sub and two One SL’s what would you pick?
I was hoping no one ever asks me about that choice! It’s a tough one! Based on only these two choices, I’d say, go for the beam, sub and two SLs simply because I feel that the Sub is such a capable machine and you can surely keep it for a Long Long time. But I’d throw another suggestion/combination back to you for your consideration. How about the Arc with Sub?
Peter Pee As I live in an apartment the sub can cause problems with my neighbours so I feel having the surrounds I can enjoy a more immersive sound at lover volume levels. My main issue is, does the Arc have enough base? I think I will go the arc and the surrounds as eventually I will probably get the sub but it is not cheap buying it all at once.
The arc will definitely have bass and depending on your preference, may be sufficient. It will definitely sound better with a sub but like you said, you are constrained by neighbours so at Low levels, it will work just fine. Either way, you will enjoy the setup. :)
Peter Pee thank you Peter, appreciate the feedback.
I’ll be releasing a video soon to compare all the combinations of the arc, on its own, with surround only, with sub only and with both surround and sub.
I like your video and very clearly explained for spec and features. I want to purchase this ARC system, kindly advise me as my TV audio is codec in manual Dobly Digital, Dobly digtal plus, can it produce ATMOS effect when watch like Netflix streaming.
It can produce Atmos as long as the TV either processes Atmos or is able to pass through the stream directly to the Arc for processing. Dolby Digital + is good enough for Lossy Atmos. So you can get Atmos but because the TV may not support Atmos decoding, it has to pass out the signal to Arc for Atmos decoding. Then it will depend on the streaming app that you are using.
Note also that your TV needs to be HDMI ARC port.
A verry verry informative video peter you have a new subscriber here please i need your help i dont know if you already test the bose 700 soundbar with the subwoofer what so you think is better between the arc and the bose?in music and movie please i will only make a huge huge effort to have one and i dont want to make huge mistake thank you and more power..
To be honest I like the Bose 700 and the sound is great with a smooth bass response. They are better for music than the Sonos Arc. But with movies, I find the Sonos Arc much more suitable.
If I could lend my opinion, get the ARC. It is going to last you a long time. And if history is anything to go by, Sonos supports their products with updates for many many years.
hi friend, i would like some advice? i have money to buy the sonos arc alone or the beam plus two sonos one, which option do you recommend?
I would say go for the Sonos Arc. Between the Arc and the Beam, the Arc is more capable and sounds better. And they have side firing speakers too which will simulate surround. And in the future, when budget allows, you can then add the Ones in. You buy the beam with the Ones now and you will be stuck with the Beam in the future. Not that it's a bad choice though. The beam is a marvel at its size.
Can you make video with Sonos beam with 2 sonos one SL with Sonos arc to make DTS comparison
Interesting question, waiting for a response
I’ve owned a beam for a year and want to expand for a more surround experience (on a budget), considering getting 2 Sonos ones , or packing it in altogether and getting Amazons a pair of echo studios , any suggestions ?
Go for the Sonos one for surround experience. It will give you a great surround sound field.
I’m very new to this and looking at the arc and sub as my first system. Question I have is about WiFi. I’m quite rural and have very slow broadband, does the arc and sub setup use bandwidth to function? Do I just need WiFi for setup and does it continually use it to function, what would happen if the WiFi went out? Love the vids by the way, helping me navigate the often confusing waters of home audio!
Hey Daniel, Sonos (except the Sonos Move) requires Wifi to work. It doesn’t take a lot of bandwidth so even if the connection is slow, it’s still alright. The wifi connection on most of the Sonos products are limited at 54Mbps only. Should be quite ok. But you will need the wifi to be on.
Peter Pee thanks for the info and the quick reply, much appreciated!
Success!!!! How was the Atmos height simulation?
After 1 week of tweaking around! Can hear some sounds from the heights channel but doesn’t stack up to the physical ceiling speakers. But there is some.
You are really a sonos expert. I currently own beam and 2 ones and it sound awesome for 5.1 videos. Looking to add gen3 sub. Is addding a sub in an apartment space recommended without being too loud? Nice comparison btw. Appreciate
Welcome to the channel! Actually, in almost all cases, I find the benefits of a sub to be at the maximum when you’re playing back at lower volumes. At Low volumes, when you’re without a sub, you can barely hear any bass when you’re using small speakers. But with a sub, you can sense the bass better. So my take is that in an apartment space; you will also reap the benefits of a sub!
By the way, I’m of the opinion that the sub is the most important product in the whole Sonos lineup. It goes with everything. It’s Sonos’ ketchup.
Thanks for the advise. Would definitely go with the sub. Also do you notice any difference in sound stage after adding the sub with beam + ones ? Does it expand the sound field? I personally believe beam has a bit narrow sound stage, but its quite understandable due to the limitation of the overall size. But when coupled with ones i feel it sounds immersive
Actually if you want to expand the sound field, it’ll be the surround channels. The sub doesn’t really help in expanding the sound field.
so on budget stand point, would any owners here agree the price difference for normal user with normal entertainment needs not worth the upgrade from Beam to ARC?
Depends on the size of your room. But I would said, budget standpoint, the beam is much better price-performance ratio. For a lot less money but not a lot less sound.
Great video, have you had luck with atmos thru the new shield?
No. Not on the Netflix or prime app. Only time it worked was when I was using kodi to stream the downloaded Atmos demo file from Dolby website.
1:47 1:58 2:10 beam
2:45 2:56 3:08 arc
I always wondered if it was possible to add 2 more sonos one sl for mids. So id have the arc, sub, sl in rear and sl in mid. Is that a thing? 😆 or will it not support that? Also I still couldn't figure out where to find the atmos download on the site. Thanks
thedigitaltheater.com/dolby-trailers/
Click on the above link.
And no, you wouldn't be able to add two more SLs to make mid channels.
@@PeterPee i called sonos and they told me. That's sad. But thanks for the link.
I just convinced the wife to letting me upgrade my 2010 40 inch Bravia to a 55 inch LG CX. Already having a hard time convincing her we need a sound bar. At $400 ($370 at Costco) the Beam seems more palatable. Would I be missing out a lot if I didn't get the Arc? Is it worth double the sticker price of the beam?
Oh gosh... you are pushing the blame to me! Ok, never mind, I’ll take the fall for this! Look Ivan, if you are getting the ticket to upgrade to the CX, you need the Arc! It’s the perfect combination. The Arc is... a lot wider... And you’d get Atmos for sure!
@@PeterPee I would never put you in danger like that Peter ; )
But on a serious note I am very much interested in your thoughts on atmos. Do I need to buy separate speakers to utilize it? I heard you need to put speakers in your ceiling. I also heard that not many movies even implement atmos. What had your experience been? Had there been cases where you've been totally blown away by it?
thx for doing this ive got the beam paired with 2x play1 and pretty happy with it. but wonder if the arc worth the upgrade considering the price difference.
Since you already have a beam and the surrounds, your best bang for the buck would be to go for the sub rather than upgrade to the arc.
@@PeterPee nice. many thanks. i'll wait until december to see any offer here in uk. sub costs £700at the moment.
Ouch! That almost sounds like discriminatory pricing!
hi, what is the best option for samsung 65 inch frame tv ? my living room is not big
If it is not that big, then a beam will do fine. You might then even have some leftovers which you can extend a bit more and buy a pair of One SL or Ikea symfonisk bookshelf for surround effect!
Hi Peter , if I'm more of a music lover instead of movie/cinema ,
1) which soundbar would you advice me to purchase for a condominium size of approx 1300 sqft. I normally listen to edm and accoustic tracks .
2) Would I benefit significantly from the surround setup of a Sonos one sl ?
@peter pee
carson wong How big is the room that you intend to play music in?
I find the Surround channels distracting for music and I end up lowering the surround levels significantly for music. If you are less of a movies and more of a music person I’d say go for a pair of play:5s or the new Sonos fives.
A bit off topic. Have you experienced any lip sync issues with the Arc?
Not off topic at all. Yes I have had some lip sync issues but i have been playing around with the settings so much I can’t even remember the circumstances under which it happened. Right now, I don’t have the issue. But I distinctly remember having a bit of a sync issue with either the Nvidia shield 2017 or Apple TV 4K.
In your opinion, how does beam + (2) play 1 compare to Arc? (No subs)
I am of the stand that rear channel speakers add a lot to the mix. You can’t simulate surround to the point that it replaces physical rear speakers. If you listen to the comparison, the beam actually does sound pretty good given its price being half of the arc. If you don’t need Atmos, I’d actually recommend you go for the beam and surround speakers combo.
@@PeterPee thank you so much you have made my decision so much easier. I think I will purchase another beam and I can get additional play ones together for about half the price of the Arc.
Nice to hear that I was able to help!
Your videos are torture, Amazon is set to deliver my arc and sub on July 8th. I did get my pair of one's for the rear channel. My first Sonos, setup was so easy
Yes I agree. Sonos setup is great. Even for the uninitiated.
Did you get your system? What's your setup? I'm asking, 'cause we've decided to upgrade our current home sound system (it's old and cheap) and I'm just discovering the world of soundbars and the like. I'd never heard of Sonos until a week ago. I'm worried about having a system (wireless) that is like my bluetooth speaker & phone, which sometimes drops signals and the like. So I thought I should just go back to a receiver and speakers. In terms of soundbars, a salesman had me listen to a Bose 700. Sounded good to me. The setup would cost, 2400$ (canadian) which includes a sub and two small surround speakers. I wonder what's best? Thoughts?
The Sonos has been ultra reliable and mostly drop free sounds without lags and annoying gaps. The software is great too and it’s quite robust. The Bose 700 sounds great and is a real contender in terms of sound quality. But the software might be something you want to be sure you can live with. There are reports that it’s not the most stable. And that could really break the user experience.
@@mikebonnell3160 my system sounds great and Sonos really just works. To go from listening to music to playing a movie it's seamless in a way other soundbars and systems are not

I’m not sure but are you referring to the ht-st5000? I genuinely am not sure if there is a 500 model. I don’t follow Sony for soundbar very closely as I find the sound to be really mediocre. It goes loud and the all the slam is provided by the bass unit (subwoofer) only. The sound bar in itself is not capable of producing any form of decent sound on its own. I prefer the ambeo, Bose, b&w, or Sonos as the sub, while it helps tremendously, remains an option. Sony, Samsung and LG shoves it in the box and you have to get it together. Because they know the sound bar on its own won’t be able to hold the fort.
If you don’t wanna get Sonos, you might really do better with Bose or b&w than Sony or Samsung for the same or little more money.
@@PeterPee Ye sorry HT-ST5000
@@PeterPee I have the Sony today but really don't like it. And look at Sonos. How about power output and DTS and TTSX support?
Also are you telling me that Sonos Sub works with Bose?
My observations apply for the 5000. The Sonos sub only works within Sonos. I am unable to test the power output of the Sony. I have tested the power draw of the sub gen 2. And that peaked out at 245w which is very respectable. In casual testing (I have not done a controlled test and video on that) the Sonos sub gen 3 peaked at 286w. Don’t take my word for it now but it seems it’s slightly more powerful!
Have you heard from Sonos about the 40hz issues?
They have a firmware fix incoming...check the forums
The beta version is out. For some reasons, I am not able to get my beta version to test. :( But it's already in Beta so hopefully that resolves the issue.
Mic's omni ?
You are awesome ☝️
Thank you jack ryan. I was just watching you on prime to test out the atmos!
If comparing the Arc to the Beam you can find a definite difference in sound quality. None of these reproduce music well and the size of the drivers, power, tuning, material and engineering behind them in my opinion create loud noise but nothing like `the richness and lushness of a normal speaker. I was left wanting after auditioning these sound bars.
Ideally I think two powered stereo speakers of bookshelf size outperform these. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a pair that will easily integrate well with my television setup (tv, cable box, ROKU, Blue Ray) without adding another remote or is challenging to use for my spouse. Television viewing has become too complicated for those just looking to increase the dang volume and have a richer, fuller sound without all the 3D special effects. I enjoy movies and have a dedicated home theater room with real speakers in a 7.1 array. I’m talking about a standard tv room where programming is mostly viewed 90%+. Any ideas? This television is in an open design living room of vast space with nothing but a back wall.
Two options come to mind... The Devialet Phantom (Classic, Reactors) but they cost a WHOLE lot more. It's just not very cost effective but the bass is mind-blowing and the looks are out of this world.
The second option, Klipsch The Fives. HDMI ARC inputs with Digital in as well as analog inputs. I believe this comes close to your requirements.
@@PeterPee Thanks for your reply Peter. The Klipsch The Fives are on my watch list. I haven’t been able to find them locally to audition. I just might have to buy a set on blind faith and pray for the best. Reviews look like these will be the ones I need.
Both sounds great but the arc sounds way better
Be great to know if Atmos can play from thumb drive on Sony A8G through to arc. Might take using VLC?? And if is does would it automatically convert from lossless Atmos from USB drive to lossy to pass through to arc?
Hi Chris. I’m not sure about the conversion from lossless. Did you rip direct from Bluray? Bluray Atmos will be lossless.
Holy! Let me go through that list. Looks like a lot of work. For science!
@@PeterPee 😊
@@PeterPee also, I didn't know but you can chromecast lossy Atmos mkv to tv and you will receive full Atmos on arc.
@@PeterPee do you know of any test tone audio for Atmos lossy 5.1.2? I'm really interested in hearing the height channels solo to get an understanding of their effect/ volume.
Hello - just into the world of Sonos I have two gen1 play 5s. Is a play beam with a sub and two play 1s overkill with these play 5s I have for 5.1 sound - thanks
The beam and sub with 2 play:1s is already a full 5.1 setup. Are you running s1 platform? If all are on s1 you can set them up as two separate rooms and play them together for better volume.
Thanks - would a Sonos arc with a sub be better and use the play 5s as rear speakers
The Sonos arc requires s2 ply form. The play:5s gen 1 only works on the s1 platform. So they won’t be able to be setup together.
Scusa posso conetere sonos port a sonos arc???
Struggling to get Atmos to work through Sonos Arc as well. My Sony X900F is supposed to transmit through Dolby digital + but Apple TV 4k won't show it as an option. Going to try this and see what happens. Thank you!
Just successfully played Atmos dd+ through my Arc and 2 play ones as rears. Those vids you linked worked perfectly. Amazing!!! So now I know it's a problem between the Apple TV 4k and my TV. I have 2.1 Hdmi cables coming later today, hopefully that fixes my problem. If not, who knows what will work. In any case you deserve a sub!! Thanks for putting this content out, Peter!
That is an issue between the Apple TV 4K and the screen. I have that issue with my Samsung mu6100 too. The projector is recognised and Apple TV 4K shows Atmos. But not the Samsung.
Thanks for the sub! I appreciate it! I’ll be watching this Space to hear your feedback on the cable! There’s another viewer who’s also asking but he’s already getting Atmos so I recommended not changing. But let’s see your experience.
@@PeterPee I Can't get apple TV to show Atmos as an option in the menu. Tried the upgraded HDMI cables and same problem.
That’s a pity. Sigh. So it’s down to what the screen is reporting to Apple TV 4K.
The beam does Dolby Atmos ? I thought the arc was the only that had it between the two.
No. The beam doesn’t do atmos.
Peter Pee thank you for replying. I do have another question, first I’m new to sound-bars, never owned one. And the arc is currently unavailable for what looks to be two months, I have a 65 cx oled. Would the beam do well for my t.v or just wait for the arc in your opinion?
The arc would be perfect for a high end tv like the LG CX. If I were you, I’d wait for it.
Peter Pee thank you 🙏 for the reply
My budget allows me to either get a standalone ARC or a Beam with 2 One SL's. If you were faced with those two options what would you do? Does it come down to a true surround sound experience vs the precision of ATMOS?
My choice will go to the beam plus 2 one sl. The sound stage will be much wider than the arc on its own.
Peter Pee Thanks Peter!!
Why can't I buy an arc anywhere in the UK? Everywhere is out of stock!
It is still overly in demand.
@@PeterPee I think it's more to do with the pandemic and the effect its had on electronic supply chains around the world. Demand could be a factor too but it just seems to much to just be that.
I was thinking about buying the ARC but now I don't know. My beam just stopped connecting to wifi. And it's 3 months out of warranty. After 3.5 hours on the phone with Sonos troubleshooting. I have to talk to another person at Sonos on Tuesday. I guess we will see what if anything Sonos is willing to do for me. Won't buy an ARC with my beam only lasting 15 months.
Have you checked to see that wifi is not being accidentally disabled on the beam? Having spent the time with Sonos to troubleshot I’m sure that has been cleared but just in case we miss the smallest and simplest thing.
@@PeterPee I was on the phone with Sonos tech support for hours doing trouble shooting. They are going to have a higher level of tech support call me Monday. The beam only shows up as a room sometimes and will not play music at all only tv through HDMI arc. And it works when connected directly to the router. I was really thinking about buying the Arc to go with my 85" Sony x900h. We will have to see what Sonos is willing to do 3 months out of warranty before I invest in any other Sonos products. Which I currently have 9 of.
@@PeterPee also I'm not sure how you disable/enable wifi on the beam.
Your other 8 should give you confidence that their products last. It’s unfortunate and I hope they sort out your problem soon!
It’s under system. Click on the room, select the product and the enable and disable is there.
Is the arc useful if tv has arc only not e-arc?
Personally I am using the Sonos Arc with a screen that doesn’t have e-ARC, only ARC. So I am getting lossy atmos not TrueHD atmos. I find the Sonos Arc enjoyable with a sub. Factor in the cost of getting a sub together if you want to enjoy the Arc at its best.
Peter Pee thanks , my the only tv with e-arc is my Sony 950g but my Yamaha receiver is connected to that hdmi output. Because I have my Xbox one x, PS4, Nintendo mini . SNES mini , sega génesis mini connected to receiver . is there a way if using my receiver 7.2 ch same time along with arc without loosing atmos? Thanks in advance.
You can’t use that together. The only input the Sonos arc will take is a hdmi arc or eArc input. It doesn’t take sound from a receiver so you can’t use it on a hdmi out from receiver.
Peter Pee thank you very much👍🏽 truly appreciate it.
Strictly between 2.0 (e.g. Dynaudio Special40) and Arc sound bar plus sub, which is a better option for music and movies?
Hard to compare. I don't know what amp you are going to drive the Dynaudio with. And if you wanna talk about movies, then you will need the Arc and sub. Stereo setup can't cope with movie demands.
Beam and Sub are both on big sale right now. In my humble opinion: yes, a system centered around the Arc would be better. But value for the money, I think it is a no brainer to have a 5.1 setup with the beam, sub, and 2 One SLs.. especially if you have a costco membership (One SL pair is 330, beam is 289)
At that price, it's really a no brainier. Go for the Beam man...
Hi there so just to some up you need earc to get the best from this soundbar? I've got earc on my LG b9 in bedroom that's fine but my Samsung q 85r doesn't support it I was hoping to use apple TV 4k.. damm that's disappointing, very tempted to send one of the arc back as it seems very limited as to what you can do with it..and not to mention all the problems I'm having at the minute with it as well as no dts....I think I'll send one back and get standalone amp and speakers for my Samsung TV as I've only bought it this year and it would be cheaper to buy new speaker setup than buy a new TV witch will sound better and support dd, dts, and atmos...what where sonos thinking?
In a way you’re right. But lossy Atmos is ain’t that bad. In a way, even the 5.1 sounds really good for a soundbar. An amp and speakers will probably sound punchier since the cones are likely to be bigger though. But one thing the center channel does is to improve speech quality and that the Sonos arc delivers beautifully.
@@PeterPee yeah when I messaged that yesterday as was quite annoyed...I actually love the soundbar I'm just annoyed at the whole Base thing and not knowing 100% it can be fixed..I tested again yesterday Netflix atmos is average at best where this thing really shines is blu- ray atmos it really is night and day... on Netflix I find the volume has to be turned up way more also the atmos effect is average..I rented the film angel has fallen on blu-ray and the I scene where the copper flys over the top of you I was blown away as to how good it sounded it was like the chopper was flying above...so far ps4 volume really good and loud, blu-ray volume really good and loud, Netflix and prime video volume average, I'm going to see if can get apple 4k TV box to see if the Netflix and prime video volume or better through it....also just heard some good news regarding earc on Samsung q 85r apparently Samsung will update the TV to earc mid July fingers crossed....
Mooor 👍👍👍👍👍
Did you try Arc with two rear speaker????
Yes I did. With two play:3s. I find the surround mix too strong and loud.
Compares to lg sn11rg sound bar which is better?
Many ways you can look at it. In terms of pure software support, I will give the win to the Sonos.
Peter Pee have you test lg sn 11rg? It have earc too.
