  • We live in times where the existence of a God is often doubted and dismissed but it wasn't always like that. Almost all groups of people through history had some sort of religious beliefs. Therefore the question arises... why?? Thomas Aquinas has 5 logical arguments as to why it's likely that some sort of God exists and I try my best to summarize them. Hope you enjoy!

"Thomas Aquinas has 5 logical arguments as to why it's likely that some sort of God exists "
There is a reason those are called arguments for a god rather than evidence for a god. Also none of the arguments gets you to "and this god is the god of the Bible & Jesus died for our sins".

@electrictroy2010 i like you have exactly the same view & argument but there could also be an argument that our planet a speck of insignificance against the magnitude of the universe although way beyond our meager understanding, what purpose does it serve. Where did the universe begin & when & why. If time is eternal, then there was no beginning to time? If our existence serves no purpose then what purpose does the universe serve & if our argument is that to exist does not need a purpose, then within our very limited ability to understand when, where why did it all begin? None of us can answer that, not even science. Science can speculate the big bang theory, but it can not answer the question as to what was there before the Big Bang to enable the big bang & why the Big Bang came into being & for what purpose. Science can be as creative & speculative as religion.

Addressing the five “proofs” of god, I must mention that the first four are all just different logical paths to the same point that is, “stuff exists, it had to be created because it can’t exist on its own.” This logic is paradoxical. If his logic that all things require a creator is true, then his statement that, “there must be something out there that exists based on pure necessity and isn’t a creation of another being” contradicts that logic and must be false. Mathematically speaking, it makes more sense to have an infinite chain of creators than one from nothing that creates one more. The last point is outdated philosophy. I know that philosophy can’t necessarily be outdated, but you can say the purpose of all human existence is to serve the French crown and call it philosophy, people will consider it outdated because the French crown no longer exists. His philosophy is outdated because science has uncovered evolution, which perfectly explains the, “all things have a purpose” observation with facts and data that can’t be disputed. It may appear that predators serve a purpose, they keep herbivorous species from overpopulating, which lets native flora continue to flourish. The wolf is not concerned about the plants, it is concerned about eating food to survive. The plants flourish as an indirect result of the wolves need to hunt deer which would otherwise eat the plants. Species have gone extinct, ecosystems have been destroyed and reconstructed. Ecosystems are not conscious, they are the unintended result of multiple species adapting to their environment along side each other creating a balance of power. An analogous way of looking at it is European history. Europe has spent almost its entire history maintaining a balance of power between nations, not letting one overpower the other. Europe as a continent is not conscious, it was the ecosystem. And just like how nazi Germany permanently broke the balance of power in Europe, humans broke the balance of power in their local ecosystems and now dominate the world. No higher power designed the humans to be overpowered, just like no higher power made Germany overpowered. Humans used their resources to the best of their ability to overcome the obstacles they faced, that is how we became so smart and became the only creatures that could, “turn potentiality into actuality.” Thomas didn’t know about the Neanderthals and other hominid species that were just as and sometimes smarter than we were that eventually died out, not because humans killed them off, but because we happened to be better adapted to the new conditions we faced after the ice age ended than the other hominid species. If we were, “made in gods image” than what does that mean for the others? Neanderthals were superior in almost every way, they just couldn’t survive in the warm environment that took over their territory that we humans had been birthed from any better then we could’ve survived the cold environment they lived in. That is why his philosophy is outdated.

So I just wanted to throw that out there. If you have never considered Christianity I believe that alone is a good reason to at least study the Bible to see what it’s about.

If a planet is habitable and suited for life, it will grow and evolve there. Please do research into all of this I really think even if it didn’t change your mind it will give you an insight into the opposing viewpoint. The concept of God exists outside of the realm and principles of time, space, matter, and causality. Nothing created God because God didn't need to be created in order to exist. God can only be understood as being the origin of creation itself. In order to "create" something, there needs to be something to create with. God has to be seen as the original being, force or thing since nothing existed prior to the big bang. Nothing existed before the influence of this thing we call God. Also, it's worthy to note that the term "impossible" only applies in reference to laws of physics and whatnot, we're pondering about what lies beyond or prior to their introduction.

Wait a minute i think I may have misinterpreted what you said.
If you're saying that the big bang happened, and also created God, then what qualifies as a creation of God? Would it be everything, or just life? No matter whichever one you think happened, it wouldn't require the existence of any higher being. Oh, and to address the first point you cited that "proves" the existence of some sort of God, when you trace it back, all energy on and in our planet comes from the sun: The sun emits UV rays that are absorbed by producers, those producers then use that energy to grow until they are eaten by primary consumers, who continue the cycle until it reaches the top, and the apex animal dies. That animals remains are eaten by decomposers, who reintegrate the energy into the soil to be absorbed by producers yet again. This restarts the process, creating a neverending loop.

    Let a + b = c, i.e. a = 1, b = 2, c is therefore 3.
multiply both sides of this equation by (a - c)
    which gives (a - c)(a + b) = c(a - c),
which results in a² + ab - ac - bc = ac - c²,
adding bc to both sides gives a² +ab - ac -bc + bc = ac + bc - c² ,
    factorising gives a(a + b - c) = c(a + b - c),
terms in the brackets cancel therefore a = c and therefore god is flawed and does not exist.

@@Matthew_Holton You are making a bunch of strawman against Aquinas' argument. He did not say that all movement requires an initial mover. He says in his Summa that whatever is in motion must be moved by another. By _motion_ Aquinas means the metaphysical act of moving from potentiality to actuality which he derived from Aristotle. It's the Aristotlelian account of causality.
Modern cosmology has nothing to do with with Aquinas' argument. Aquinas was not talking about local motion and he did not say that the Universe had a beginning. Aquinas assumed for the sake of argument that the Universe was eternal since most philosophers believed that in his day. His argument is about what is sustaining the existence of the Universe here and now. By "first mover" Aquinas meant what has ontological priority. This is sometimes called existence actualizers. For example cats depend on the existence of cells, cells depend on the existence of molecules, molecules depend on the existence of atoms, and so forth until this terminates in a reality that is responsible for the existence for everything else here and now so is the first mover in the since of ontological priority not contingent causality within time.
Also I don't think Hume refuted anything. All he did was deny Aristotlelian efficient and final causality and adopted counter intuitive views of causality which are problematic since nowadays philosophers of logic and possibility no that conceptual possibilities do not translate into ontological possibilities. Hume's very on notion of conceivability undercuts his conclusion. For example it is conceivable that something has the nature of necessary existence like a necessary existing particle or logical principle. According to Hume conceivability is possibility. But the problem is something cannot be possibly necessary unless it is actually necessary in reality. If a necessary thing does not exist but could then it would have the potential to exist which would mean it is contingent which contradicts the nature of a necessity. So Hume is wrong. Being able to conceive of things does not make them ontologically possible.

    How to kill apologetics:
    1. Argument isn't evidence.
    2. Apologists can't assert their "logic" without employing fallacy, why do you suppose that is?
We can go into each of these five nonsensical arguments if you like, but in the end, you entered with nothing and left learning nothing. This is not a good way to spend your time.

I expected a comment like this to show up. why are you so riled up? I clearly stated that this video was made in order to explore the believer point of view without ridiculing it as you are doing. Also, I clearly stated at the end that none of this is evidence. Please explain what "fallacy" is being inserted?

"Please explain what "fallacy" is being inserted?" An argument from ignorance. All "five" nonsensical arguments (which are really just a way to restate that you can insert a gaps fallacy into anything you don't understand).

@@frosted1030 frosted1030 I just don’t consider the arguments “nonsensical” rather just something to consider and debate over. They are clearly rationalist arguments and definitely not empiricist ones. It seems that you are an empiricist and that’s cool. I’m just here to share different types of philosophies that some ppl might find interesting. Even I don’t agree with all of them but I rather engage in discussion rather than ridicule them.

@@BDDesignCo " I just don’t consider the arguments “nonsensical” rather just something to consider and debate over." So.. you think you can debate some fantasy into existance? That's irrational.
"They are clearly rationalist arguments and definitely not empiricist ones." Never seen a theist that admits they are wrong about their deity.. even when the obvious nature of their fallacies are exposed. You call that rational?
"’m just here to share different types of philosophies that some ppl might find interesting." You must have a lot of time on your hands. In the real world, we do things, make things, and don't have time for these mindless games of justification for action or inaction. We act. Or do you think your computer just happened from a magical word spoken by some invisible creature?

frosted1030 okay this is just asinine. You’ve clearly never been exposed to the real arguments for gods exitence. Granted, the arguments in this video were a bit simplistic and incorrect. Aquinas talks about contingent causation that happens simultaneously, not a chain that stretches back in time. Your problem is that you assume something is fantasy without using any logic or reason to back it up.
