    As a 'Newboy' to FS down in Cornwall, UK, I am impressed by the quality of this video. The clear and unhurried instruction by this Scot is first class. Just what I need at my age.

    First, nomenclature: the V-bar FD is called a “single cue” FD, while the two perpendicular command bar type is a “dual cue” flight director. I’ve flown with both on a variety of commercial aircraft and some people prefer one or the other. Most manufacturers give airlines the option what format they want (it’s just software in an EFIS cockpit) and train pilots accordingly. I have only seen dual cue on Airbus, but they have yet another format for being in Track/Flight Path Angle that we don’t want to get into here.
    I personally prefer the single cue when everything is working. The FD and autopilot in modern planes can be used independently of each other, and we hand fly all the time with the FD on and the AP off. The point to be made is (again, modern airliners here, I don’t want to talk about something like an FD-109 on a DC-9) that when you have the FD on and are hand flying, then turn the AP on, the AP will be in the same modes as the FD was prior to engagement. Likewise, if you had the AP on and the FD off, when you turn the FD on it will be providing guidance to match what the AP was doing before you turned the FD on (this would be extremely uncommon).
    I hope that helps from a line pilot’s perspective.

    That buzz you got at 17:30 was a speed warning. 250 kts max speed below 10,000 ft. Look at the airspeed indicator.

      Wrong. That sound tones when approaching selected altitude. The airplane doesn't care if you exceed traffic rules.

    The strange sound while climbing to altitude, is an Altitude Alert Horn. In general, it sounds when the aircraft is approximately 1000 ft above or below the set altitude.

    I think the "course" knob is the one that controll horizontal bar in base fsx plane

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  7 років тому +1

      It would be the Vertical bar, the horizontal bar gives Pitch guidance, tells the plane whether to climb or descend.

    The Flight Director's heading line in the 737 has a glitch where it wouldn't move on the ground. It should work when you're in the air and show a noticeable change. :)

    • @jonathanpinto7615
      @jonathanpinto7615 7 років тому +1

      ScienceRedstoneGaming it’s not a glitch, its most likely mimicking the real airplane. On most fms systems the FD logic won’t let the airplane turn until 400ft agl

    Hi Doofer911, as skysac already said: a video on fuel pumps and perhaps engine startup procedure in the default boeing/airbus would be great! As for now I'm a bit confused on how to go from cold and dark to engines running in a default b737/a321.

    we would need a more in depth tutorial for holds which are not that easy to grasp. e.g. similar to what capt- joe put on youtube - maybe it can be done more clearly. i dont know yet iof a hold calculator or similar is available. of course, an autopilot that does it for you and displays the holding path in the nd is ideal.

    What about the pin FD on small Cessnas?

  • @scottfranco1962
    @scottfranco1962 8 років тому

    I never understood why people pay so much money for FDs. It basically makes you the arm of the autopilot. The basic idea is that you use the computer outputs from the AP to tell you how to aim the aircraft to achieve a given altitude or heading. Recall the AP does not just GO to a given heading or altitude, but rather chooses a rate of turn or pitch to get there.
    Now why would anyone use an FD vs just switching the AP on? Most light aircraft don't have FDs, that is a feature of high end APs. It used to be a completely analog function.

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 7 років тому

      Because it is a huge safety feature and greatly increases efficiency.
      On something like a Beech 1900, where most don't have an autopilot to save weight and cost, the flight director is a huge help for anticipating level offs (our company doesn't require a 100 below/above call when using an FD) and nailing a reference attitude. We set ten degrees up for takeoff... which really helps at night when even if you have AP you can't engage it below 400 feet.

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 7 років тому

      Oh.... and unless you're talking a really basic autopilot that does heading and altitude hold only... a flight director is required for altitude capture, approach mode, etc. It won't even turn on until the FD is turned on... because that is where it is getting its 'rate' information from.:. a combination of the ADI and DG as well as barometric information.

    Hey buddy, thanks for the informative video, really enjoyed it.
    btw I'm using xpplane 10 but im finiding it very difficult to maintain avionics in a plane, maybe cause am using different planes, do you have any recommendations for this issue I know some people are saying " buy the JARdesign A320" cause it has everything in it, but i would like to hear your comment :) many thanks keep up the good work.

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  8 років тому

      I haven't spent enough time in X Plane 10 to get comfortable with the avionics I'm afraid. I've struggled myself to get the autopilot in the default Cessna 172 because it seems to function different to the one in FSX so I'll need to allocate some time to that soon.
