King Christian IX of Denmark is known as the fathe rin law of Europe. His 6 children inherited, married into or were appointed to monarchies all over the continent. Between them they gave Christian and his Queen Louise 39 grandchildren and many more decedents who would occupied 9 different European thrones - Denmark of course, but also Norway, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Greece, Spain, Russia, Romania, and Luxembourg. They spanned 128 years of history Prince Albert Victor being born in 1864 and Princess Margaret of Bourbon-Parma living to see 1992. Among them, they defied the Nazis, served in the French Foreign Legion, won and lost various thrones and foil assassination attempts.

Another fun fact: During WW2, Hitler wrote a long personal letter to the king of Denmark to congratulate him on his birthday. King Christan the 10th simply responded with "Many thanks" (so basically, today's equivalent to "k") and Hitler got so furious, he was about to go beserk on Denmark. Luckily he got talked out of it in the end... The king was such a badass lol

I'm Greek and at school we are not taught that we had a royal family. I found out about it when I was 16 years old. Thank you so much for making these videos
I'm a senior in high school and in history we talk about the Greek royal family although a huge part of the history book is about venizelos
@@giannisfragos722 You're lucky and I'm glad to hear this! When I went to school in the 2000s (I'm assuming you're younger than me) we barely touched the topic of Greek royalty. I believe it had to do with the government of the time and how they ran the educational system and political propaganda they wanted to pass through our young impressionable heads.
It's so interesting that learning about one family can really give a history lesson about the world wars! Queen Alexandrine of Denmark's mother Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna would be a fun video topic. As a young widow she gambled, partied, and had an illegitimate child she actually raised. During WWI her sympathies were with the allies even though her other daughter was the Kaiser's daughter-in-law and her son was Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Shwerin. 3 of her brother's were killed by the Bolsheviks.

Our current crown prince is named Frederik André Henrik Christian. His oldest son is named Christian Valdemar Henri John. And our queen is named Margrethe Alexandrine Thórhildur Ingrid.

That's fairly common in a lot of cultures where parents choose their children's partners.

This is so funny for me because I have a huge family. I'm the 7th of 13 kids, my mom and my father are both the 8th of 10 kids and literally in my class I have 8 of my cousins

Well it was seen as there duty for royal women to have as many children as possible and were pressured to have loads of children
People in general did have many kids in those days due to no telly and no birth control ......
One thing that you missed mentioning was that Marina the daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark married George the VI's brother Prince George, Duke of Kent.
I remember reading a childrens book about the new royal family of Norway and how they were Danish and had to learn how to be Norwegian. It was adorable and I loved it. The prince had to learn how to ski jump

There are currently four countries, where the monarch is a descendant of both Christian IX and Victoria: Denmark, Norway, Spain and the UK. Greece would be a fourth example if they returned to being a monachy.

King Christan X didn't only become a symbol for the danes because he stayed, but also because he refused to not greet any german soldiers when he went on his riding trip. also because he didn't hide away at his palace, he took his horse out riding every day, without guards. he kind of silently resisted the nazis, not put the danish nation in danger. he did alot for his country.

As an extra loop to the Greek story, King Constantine (the current one) is married to the youngest sister of Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Annemarie.

The grown of Finland never went anywhere, because Finland didn´t want the royal family to have an word of Finland´s politics. Even thought both of them where offered and one was chosen to be the King, he never became the king of Finland. So I get why you say "sort lived grown", instead saying the grown was offered to him, but instead they did choose the german prince who actually never became the king of Finland.

Valdemar is an old Danish King name. According to Danish legend, it was Valdemar the II "Victory" who saw the Danish flag Dannebrog drop from the sky in Estonia, in the year 1219. Prince Christian, the current Crown Prince of Denmark's oldest son and future king, one of his middlenames is Valdemar.

Princess Thyra, later the Duchess of Cumberland, fell in love with one of her father's adjudants, a young officer in the Guard Hussars, Vilhelm Frimann Marcher, who reciprocated her feelings. She became pregnant and was hastily sent to brother Vilhelm/king Georg I in Greece, where she gave birth to a daughter. The child was adopted by a family in Odense and grew up without knowing about her parentage. She did marry, but has no descendants.
Lt. Marcher shot himself.
Rumors about the affair were finally confirmed in 1975, when Bo Bramsen's "Huset Glücksborg" was published.
The other Thyra, sister to Chr. X & Haakon V, never married and had no children. Her younger sister Dagmar married Jørgen Castenskiold to Kongstedlund.

My town is named Schleswig I have heard so many pronunciations. It's good to finally understand how it's supposed to sound, our neighboring towns all have german names in the middle of Iowa.
Hi there, sorry to tell you, but her pronounciations is quite wrong 😜 It does work in terms of pronouncing the letters in the english way, but it is not how the german word is originaly suppossed to sound. Believe me, I'm from Schleswig-Holstein, with the town of Schleswig being not far away.
The german pronounciation (if that's what you where looking for) is Schleswig with the "sch" like the "sh" in words like "shame" (instead of the "s" as in "slumber" like this UA-camr is saying it). The rest of the word is fine though.

And if you want the Danish pronunciation, it's more like Sleisvii spelled Slesvig. And Holstein is Holsten. I myself live in Sønderborg, which is one of the cities/duchies in e.g. Prince Phillip's original title, very close to the German border, this part of Denmark goes by the name Southern Jutland or North Slesvig. 😊

Its so weird how despite all these cousins havung parents who were close as siblings, but the cousons themselves in the eaurope royal families where split into two different camps during ww1
Yes. Well, during their childhood, they would spend many summers together at the Danish summer castle of Fredensborg. Here it was Christian the IX and his wife who were king and Queen, and a kind of sanctuary for everyone else. But it's very clear that political tensions spread between the countries, not necessarily led on by the royals, but of course they felt they had to follow the interests of their country.
I gotta say, you watch enough of these videos and immerse yourself, you start creating a bubble where it’s ONLY European royal families in the world and no one else 🤣

Sad that you did not mention Alexandra’s eldest child and daughter Maria. Yes, Dmitry is known for bing of the conspirators to kill Rasputin. However, Maria had a very interesting life too. Born into wealth, she was first married to a Swedish and Norwegian prince, but that was unhappy. She was a nurse during WWI, after the revolution she managed to get out of Russia. In the 1920´s she opened a famous atelier Kitmir and worked with Coco Chanel.

No she didn't, internationally our kings are known by the french version of their name.
He is know as Filip and Philippe. The second name is just his French name. Not the name he is know by internationally.

My Family History(noone cares but I like to write it here on this channel because its history)one of my ancestors was a lady in waiting for Louise of Hesse-Kassel,the wife of Christian IX!Their are still records that my mother has,apparently she wrote a letter to the Prince that she wasn't enjoying it and if she could leave,he invited her to stay in the Palace and sparked a small romance before leaving to go back to the Palace,she hated it even more and after 10 years she ran away to Eastern Denmark,she was Louise's favourite lady in waiting and loved her so she sent exactly 35 guards to find her,they did and she was brought back to the Palace,after a year Louise started disliking her so my ancestor legit moved to Norway,where was found again and imprisoned,she only had 1 child and died age 46 in 1863. Her son was 25 and moved to Germany,where he got married to a noble,however my family didn't have records of her,he wanted to never have kids which was unlikely back then,but when he was 52,his wife was 46,his wife unexpectedly got pregnant and she died in childbirth in 1889,her husband died in 1910. That baby that was born in 1889 is the mother to my great grandmother,he wanted to marry a poor farm girl,but his father didn't approve so he ran away in 1905 with the girl who was 3 years older,they went to Monaco and stayed their until moving to Asia in 1914,they came back to Monaco in 1937 and left again in 1939 because of the war,they were scared people would come to tgwir country so as soon as it was declared they left,came back to Monaco in 1947 and stayed their,they moved to England in 1960 and came back to Monaco in 1970,1 years later his wife died and he died another 4 years later in 1975 age 86,crazy enough his daughter,my great grandma died in 2014 when I was 21!She always told me that despite life being hard in the 1910's she loved it and said she'd always go back!
Louise of Sweden looks like one of those premade Sims in the neighborhood that you really don't want anyone to marry because they are really weird looking and going to make weird looking sims-children.

Excellent series of videos. I'm impressed with the accuracy of pronouncing Dagmar in Danish, well done! However, the correct and not at all logical way to pronounce "Aage" is something like the English word "owe" with the "e" somewhat pronounced at the end, maybe more like "oweh".
