    Don't sleep on the Ranger/Monk multiclass. The reliance on wisdom and dex is perfect and the extra bonus action plus archery fighting style used with dual hand crossbows gives them an incredible ranged option that is almost as good as their unarmed strikes, for those tines where your fantastic mobility still comes up short. If you go Gloomstalker and Shadow you get the additional synergy and another free attack at the start of combat.

      @@RobThePrincess Its thief rogue. best way to build a "gun slinger" in BG3 imo is Thief Rogue till you get the bonus action, then switch to Colossal Hunter Ranger for the rest. You'll have 4 attacks each round with duel hand cross bows. not giving away any spoilers. but there is a set of hand cross bow that give ad additional 2d4 damage each tern they hit if a condition is met (its almost always met). colossal hunter gives +1d8 once per round when you damage an already damaged target. so pretty much on your second action each tern at least. lastly, because you are making so many attacks each turn, any item that adds more damage to your damage will be HUGE. ae stock charges or a straight 1d4 to all damage rolls. if built right with gear, you can do 200pts of damage each turn.

    • @maxfriis
      @maxfriis Рік тому +1

      @@RobThePrincess I think he is just a bit sloppy in his entry. I think the extra bonus action he is talking about is just the normal bonus action and it's extra to the normal action(s). Only thiefs get two bonus actions.
      There are some other situational ways to get an extra bonus action but I don't think that is what he is talking about. As a Way of the Open Hand monk if you use your action on Wholeness of Body you do get an extra bonus action.

    One thing to remember is monk weapons will do their damage if it is higher than your fists damage...but if your fist damage is higher, so is the monk weapon. So at lvl 1 a staff does one d6+dex/str, and your fists are 1d4+dex/str, but at lvl 9 your fists and staff will deal 1d8+dex/str. There is never a down side to using a weapon, only upsides if the weapon is better. This is not to say you should not use your fists, just if you like your weapon, it won't hurt you any to use it.

    • @Axterix13

      It does cause a few issues, like gear that only boosts unarmed or weapon use. With Flurry of Blows and the unarmed bonus attack parts of the Monk kit, you'll probably be using unarmed attacks for at least that. And if you go open hand subclass, at level 6, you get the Manifestations, which add 1d4 + wis mod to your unarmed damage. At that point, you're probably done with weapon use. But that's the point where that monk subclass really comes into its own. Before that, yeah, no real downside to using a weapon.

    For rogue/monk multiclass, I'd say starting as a rogue is less than ideal. Most difficulty checks for those early sleight of hands are 10s, and with 3 points from dex, plus guidance, they're already pretty easy. Overall, probably far better to get those monk levels first, to get the feat at 4, extra attack at 5, and those nice level 6 perks.

      How often is this useful? It’s less accurate because it’ll be a wisdom based attack.
      It’s minor damage with no ability modifier.
      Monks have huge movement and there are several items in the game that give you misty step as a bonus action if you just don’t want to use a ki point to dash as a bonus action.
      When do you need this?
      And, you don’t want to multi class until well after level 5. You want multi attack.
      But if you do it right after level 5 then you delay your level 8 feat.
      This feels like a weird idea. You could take magic initiate Druid at level 4 if you really wanted to do this. Or, maybe just take that one cantrip as a racial cantrip from level 1.
      It does less damage than a monk using ranged monk weapons to attack. And, there just aren’t many times when you can’t get in melee range.
      Feels like people who want to mix cleric and monk. It doesn’t make sense.

      @@HiItsMars most people have no idea they’re making a bad build. Most people don’t think things through.
      If you think it through and you’re confronted with the fact that you’re making a bad build and you still want to do it, then you’re doing it for the right reasons.
      If you’ve convinced yourself that a poor combination is going to be a powerhouse and then find out it’s lame it can ruin your experience.
      I’ve been playing D&D since the 90s. I’m pretty solid on how to pick a vision and turn it into a reality.
      She wants to create scorpion from Mortal Kombat in D&D? You can absolutely make that happen! And, in my first post I already suggested two ways to get thorn whip without taking a full level of Druid.
      Doesn’t seem like she wants to be a Druid to me. Seems like she wants to be a Monk that has the thorn whip cantrip. I think in BG3 the high elf can pick any cantrip at level 1 (could be wrong, it may only be wizard cantrips).
      My first suggestion would be to pick a race that makes this possible. In the tabletop I would suggest variant human to start with a feat and grab magic initiate and pick Druid and take the cantrip that way. This would allow her to pick thorn whip, a utility cantrip, and a first level spell. Pick those things that do stuff that reminds you of Scorpion. Level only as a monk and lean towards open hand or shadow for subclass. This brings the fantasy online at level 1 instead of waiting for multiclass and trying to work into your character why nature is important to you and all the rest.
      In BG3 I would try for a race that grants the cantrip and then level as monk. I would also buy every scroll of burning hands I could find. This would give you thorn whip and a way to do scorpions fire breath fatality. But, they would only level as a monk, likely open hand. Way of four elements I haven’t tried in BG3 … would be worth looking into. Into the pen and paper game the subclass is garbage. In BG3 they may have fixed some things.

    I really like the Open Hand 6 + Spore 6 MC. Symbiotic Entity gives a ton of Temp HP and now that the Necrotic damage applies to unarmed strikes (as of Patch 1) you have another vehicle for dealing damage. Druid and monk both use Dex/Wis so the stat split works too. though given how restricive the split is, you probably want to roll a class (Edit: Race) with shields so you can get the Free AC boost.
    Thief 3 is probably the most powerful given the bonus action economy, especially if you roll STR (or have a specific item) and run Tavern Brawler. But at that point id almost rather roll with a 3 way split class with Fighter or Ranger (Gloom) mix depending on the way I wanted to play. I think there is a pretty compelling "Captain America" split with War Cleric 1 + Open Hand 8 + Thief 3 as well.

    • @magickmynd1296
      @magickmynd1296 Рік тому +1

      Eh, you don't really want to sacrifice level 9 as an open hand monk because level 9 gets you all of those awesome ki punch abilities for absolutely crazy AoE damage as a melee character, which comes in clutch in many parts of the game, no to mention it's extra free bonus damage since the ability to trigger the explosion only takes 1 ki point and no action or bonus action.
      It's extremely difficult to argue for a level 8 open hand monk for anything a level 1 class can possibly give you if you are also taking 3 levels in thief for the bonus action as you won't really need the 1 level in cleric just to get a couple of cantrips and the ability to wield a shield since the extra 2-3 ac you get from a shield can come from other sources such as having a cleric in your party cast buffs on you or equipment that gives you +1-2 ac

    • @bobnewkirk7003
      @bobnewkirk7003 Рік тому

      @@magickmynd1296 I think the play is to forsake, dex, the movement and Unarmored Defenses and run heavy armor and a shield (from cleric) while leaning on Tavern brawler and STR for main stat. War cleric enables 3 extra attacks per LR, and the Shield of Faith is a Concentration +2AC for a level 1 slot. I haven't tested it yet but have seen it theorycrafted (messing with a spore druid right now). It very well may be worse than just a 9-3 on something that can optionally run a shield (human, gith etc) but it seemed like a fun split to test.

    • @magickmynd1296
      @magickmynd1296 Рік тому +1

      @@bobnewkirk7003 if you go that route, what is the benefit of using the heavy armor and shield vs unarmored and the extra movement speed?
      Sure, you get the extra 2 ac from the spell, but it's a concentration spell which means it can be broken and you just suddenly lose 2 ac in the middle of the fight and there are other/better concentration spells you can get for that.
      You can still get the 2 ac from some other cleric in your party for the same effect.
      Plus the extra 3 attacks are only per long rest. If you want to do that you can just use the open hand monk ability to essentially do the same thing with 3 extra attacks for 3 rounds AND heal yourself.
      You can get just as much AC going unarmored as you can with heavy armor and if you really really want a shield for the extra 2-3 ac (my monk has 25 ac without it unarmored) then you can just pick a race that starts with shield proficiency rather than spec'ing into 1 level of cleric.

    • @zero11010
      @zero11010 Рік тому

      @@magickmynd1296 he’s got a novice theory craft idea that isn’t going to hold up well in the real game. Not if he were to compare it to a pure build (let alone something intentionally optimized).
      It’s crazy to do Druid/monk before level 5. So, this is what .. a level 8 idea? 5 monk and 3 druid? Is what you get from 3 levels of druid in an area where necrotic damage resistance is high actually worth it? It cost you that feat for sure. What are you doing with those spell slots? What are you doing after you get hit 3 times and your temp hit points are gone?
      If you take the extra damage die from spore and want to run with that you’ll make a halforc crit build. And if you maximize crits you’ll end up going champion fighter and/or thief rogue for an extra bonus action attack in every round of every fight for the whole day … instead of that war cleric garbage.
      Monks don’t need heavy armor. You can do it. For sure. Slap heavy armor and a shield on your monk. Give them the cloak of displacement and have a hard to hit character. How is that really better than doing those things with a pure battlemaster fighter who can also taunt and disarm? It’s not. And that battlemaster fighter can dual wield and dip rogue for an extra offhand attack every round with a 1D8 longsword that also gets full attribute modifier added in plus any other equipment modifiers. And those two offhand longsword bonus attacks don’t ever stop happening if you run out of temp hit points or run out of wildshape. It’s just a reliable 4 weapon attacks (2 from attack action and 2 bonus attacks) every round of every day. Or, just go pure fighter and it’s almost just as good.

    One thing that some people don't realize is that the game isn't accurately/strictly following 5th Edition rules, which is a good thing for monk in multiple ways.
    Perhaps the biggest of all is that *you can quite easily put a full plate and shield on a monk,* and all they lose is extra movement (and technically wis to armor, but that is far inferior than the bonus from heavy armor and shield). This makes it a strong option to pick, enabled by taking one level of War Cleric. That then synergizes with _another_ inaccuracy to 5E which is super strong: *Tavern Brawler.* This allows Mr. monk to go crazy with like +8/+8 to hit and damage, allowing for not only nearly guaranteed hits but crazy damage. Base attack damage(s) x4 plus+32 damage at just level 4, and like Base attack damage(s) x8 plus 96 late game (or more if you choose to go crazier).
    And while the loss of movement isn't ideal, it isn't the end of the world, and can kind off be made-up for in many situations (but not all) at Monk 6 via Shadow Step if going Way of the Shadow. Of course all monks also get the swift dash too, but that can potentially provoke AoO and it uses up a ki point which isn't ideal.

For one thing monks by definition traditionally cannot be female in real life, and ignoring that, females in general look more appropriate/healthy without being bony. Naturally -at least with humans- females have a higher body fat percentage. Overall though it looks fine either way, just being extra-critical.
      Anyway, a good thing about Githyanki monk is it can work for a medium armor or heavy armor build. Heavy armor would cost a feat, but alternatively one could instead dip into fighter or cleric for heavy armor and then not need Githyanki.

    monk is the strongest class in act 1, by a lot. 2 reasons: tavernbrawler + trank of the hillgiant.
    you go with open hand. i did kill a minotaur with blank fists, besides the elixir unbuffed in 1 round. just the monk. lvl 6 is even stronger, while highly mobile and good saves+natural missile snaring+deflecting.
    i will get 3 lvl in thief, maybe one in barbar-if the con modifier stacks for the ac+rage may be worth losing the upgrade from 1-6 to 1-8, a ki point and a feat. will try it out, because feats would only improve your ac with 1 point and a +1 for saves on the attribute, maybe savage attacker could bring 2-3 points more dmg average pro punch. ki resonation sounds not very strong, because a "normal" ki-powered bonus action does allready a lot of dmg.
    so far until lvl 6 monk, then 3 lvl thief should be the best path, if you want to respecc twice, going on lvl 7 into barbar may not bad if you respecc on lvl 9 again. would be a nice preview if the bonus ac and rage make it worth to not get lvl 9 monk
    a normal monk without hillgiant strength and tavernbrawler is a lot weaker. there is a option to ditch the monk defence and go with medium armor over the race or with 1 lvl barbar to work without the hillgiant elixir and it makes use of the 1 point from tavernbrawler that it wasted in my build so far.
    the only downside is you cant take out the hag to early and it feels a bit like you are drug addicted^^
    buy a elixir from ethel, go in you camp and try monk..maybe late game is a bit more "balanced" with pala, warlock and sorc etc. but early game isnt even close.

      The ki powered strikes are actually crazy powerful against groups of enemies.
      Not so much one on one, but against at least 2 or more enemies it's fantastic because you can ki-punch each enemy once, then trigger the ki blast essentially for free and both enemies will trigger 1 blast EACH, meaning they hit each other with their blasts, essentially taking double damage.
      And the ki powered strikes DO count as unarmed strikes even if the tooltip doesn't show you all the damage modifiers that the regular unarmed strike does, so don't be fooled if it looks like it's less, they still get bonuses from the elemental damage bonus that you pick at level 6 as well as tavern brawler and the wis bonus if you decide to use the kushigo boots from the beginning of act 3.
      So they have all the same power of a normal unarmed strike as well as the additional blast damage, so it turns groups of enemies into swiss cheese.
      You definitely want the 9 levels in monk to get it with 2 feats so that you can pick up both tavern brawler and the mobile feat so that you don't provoke opportunity attacks as you run around tagging all the enemies with your ki powered punches.
      Single target though just wail on them with one ki punch to make them resonate, save the rest for flurry of blows, then as an extra damage trigger the explosion, which will essentially give you 2 regular attacks, 2 bonus action attacks if you spec into 3 thief levels so you get 4 attacks from flurry of blows, and then 1 more attack from the ki explosion dealing force damage.

So no need to pick Stealth at you proficiency and you got Perception so you can focus on other skill.
    For Half-wood elf lose your Perception Proficiency and your Elven Weapon Training is change for Civil Militia. Civil Militia gain light armor (but if you don't equip armor with you wisdow at 14 minimum you gain + 2 ac (+10 for the base ac) and i don,t think is better to equip light armor), shield and Spears for your monk weapon (this a Versatile weapon)

      Going with longsword isn't really much of an improvement. Your unarmed strikes will be D8 before long. The mathematical difference between D10 and D8 is 1.
      So, unless you have a very specific sword in mind it kinda doesn't matter a ton (there are some specific items that may be a big deal). Plus there are SO many items that are designed to boost unarmed damage. And, the boots of Uninhibited Kushigo that add Wisdom modifier to unarmed strikes are a big deal. This is if you don't take the tavern brawler cheese to double your strength modifier (20 strength and 16 wisdom is very possible and that will add 13 damage to each of your unarmed strikes without any other modifiers which is 4D8+52 damage per turn assuming all attacks hit and you use a flurry).
      * Helldusk gloves give your gloves 1D4 necrotic plus a chance to inflict a bleed for even more.
      * There's the acid ring for a flat +2 acid damage
      * The gloves of balanced hands to apply your ability modifer to your offhand weapon if you happen to dual wield (basically gives the fighter two weapon fighting style)
      * The gloves of cinder and sizzle give 1D4 fire damage to your unarmed strikes and also give you the scorching ray spell once per day (great to target a distant spell caster to break concentration while you close the distance)
      * The gloves of crushing give +1 to unarmed attack rolls and +2 to unarmed damage (+1 to hit is a pretty big deal and +2 damage is the same as 1D4 of whatever).
      There are some really great shortsword options in the game. monk makes any of these do your monk attack damage.
      * justiciar's scimitar. +2 weapon. if you have advantage blind your target plus a once per short rest attack that is 1D10+1D6 psychic and the attack won't break concealment which makes it pair well with the shade slayer cloak that decreases the target number for crit by 1 if you're hidding)
      * gleamdance dagger. +2 weapon if you have this in your offhand you get a +1 to armor class
      * sword of life stealing. +2 weapon. life steal on a ciritcal hit and the target takes 10 necrotic damage (flat 10 damage) and you gain 10 temporary hit points)

    I always felt like WIS isn't quite doing enough for me, the way I like to play Monk, which is just punching people really hard. So I was trying multiclassing Monk with Barbarian, to swap the Monk's unarmoured defence with the Barbarian version, which utilises the much more generally useful CON instead. With Tavern Brawler, Athletic and the Hag's Hair, you can get to 20 STR easily, potentially even to 22, if that certain potion in act two works the way I hope it does. 🤔
    If you then go for even levels, like 4 Barbarian and 8 Monk, you'd even get one extra feat, that you could use to get your DEX to 16, or your CON to 18. I don't know, the build sounds good to me in theory, but it's not tested yet. 😂
    Fantasy-wise, you'd be the kind of Monk who isn't all that much into the whole KI and meditation aspect of the profession, and just joined an order to punch better. 😁

    • @blame7121

      Start with Barb and multiclass in to Monk, because as I understand their unarmored defense doesn't stack, so the one you pick first overrides the second one.
      Then you'll have to consider if the extra feat is worth taking, because resonating explosions come on moni lvl 9, and that's really powerful. So might have to go barb 3 and monk 9.
      Might be alright to miss out on that extra feat if you take bear barb for resistance to all damage (except psychic).

      Nah, Wis on your monk is actually REALLY useful because it not only gives you the bonus AC value stacking with your dex, but there is also an item you can get later on at the start of act 3 that adds your Wis modifier to your unarmed damage. That plus tavern brawler is OP as heck for guaranteed min damage on your unarmed attacks.
      You don't even have to spec into strength to do it either, since you can just use strength elixers and keeping all your other stat points that you would have spent on strength for other abilities.

With Tavern Brawler and Elixers of Hill Giant Strength you're dishing out some obscene fisticuffs damage, and because it's from an Elixer and feat, you can focus more on dexterity for your other abilities and AC, or even wisdom if you decide to get the Gloves of Dexterity for an extra AC boost and buff to your abilities later into act 1; great video regardless, I quite enjoy your content as it helps expand my perspective of BG3 as a whole ^w^

      5E isn’t as easy to break as 3.5. But, you still basically have to try to not break it. I played through the first time (almost done) as I wanted to and explored a ton of builds. The next time I’m going to intentionally play sub-optimally and try new build combinations.
      I definitely feel like the game isn’t designed for people who are good at character building. And, I’m sure that was a conscious decision. Casual players need to be able to finish stuff, too.
      But, the fight with 666 hit point Rafael and all of his minions was over way too fast and it was way too easy.
      And the fight with the gargantuan dragon with 400 hit points was done in two rounds.
      And I don’t do nonsense builds. I haven’t taken a long rest since getting to the the third act. For that matter, I also have only taken one of three (bard) short rests within this “day”. And, I feel like I’ve done a ton. Killed Orin, did the circus, did the house of hope (which is amazing!), did the Baldurian chamber with the dragon Ansur, did the wizard tower I’ve explored a ton of the city and all of Rivington. Got Minsc as a companion. That feels like a lot of content for only taking one short rest (to be fair there’s a fountain in the house of hope that gives the effects of a long rest, but that only impacted the four characters in my party). You can get a staff in Act 2 I think, and clothes in Act 3 in one of the shops in the city.

      Build a short rest party. Bring a bard as a healer. Warlock for casting, battle master fighter, and monk all mix well with this. It gives you 3 short rests per long rest.
      You have to be careful with how you spend your ki. Your wizard can’t use thunderwave or fireball in every round of every fight. Right? You have to spread things out and use ki tactically.
      At later levels way of open fist (it may not be subclass specific, I don’t know) gets a self heal that also replenishes half your ki.
      Most of 5E dungeons and dragons comes down to resource management. Right? If you’re a barbarian and you have 3 rages per long rest and you rage in the first three minor encounters of the day of course you won’t have any left for that boss fight later.

  • @magickmynd1296
    @magickmynd1296 Рік тому +2

    The problem with making a monk as far as stats are concerned is that yes, you can build them primarily for Dex and Wisdom if you want just a normal monk, but then a LOT of your damage is going to be based on your weapon because your unarmed attacks are not going to be as efficient.
    What you really want is high strength and high Wisdom because not only will Wisdom be added to your AC there are also items you can get in the game to add your Wis modifier to your unarmed damage.
    If you pick up tavern brawler as well you can do more damage with unarmed attacks than any weapon in the game can possibly reach.
    Also strength, for some reason, affects your ability to hit your targets and not your dex, so a high strength will mean you hit people more often than someone with low strength if you are a melee focused class, which the monk is.
    Then the problem becomes that you would have to sacrifice the higher stat you can reach for either dex or wis, right? Because you can't have 16 in 3 stats.
    BUT, what you can do is keep Dex and Wis as your main stats and keep Strength at 10, and then while playing the game you can buy/craft strength elixers which give you 21 strength until your next long rest.
    This will give you the best of all 3 stats which is high rate of hit, high initiative in a fight and high AC values as well as good Wis and Dex saves vs a lot of different spells.
    Then just make sure to pick up tavern brawler as your first feat since it will add a lot of damage to your unarmed strikes.

    So maybe respec them as a class I'd have more fun experimentating with?
