A2A Aviation - Aerostar #2: First time as a flight crew

  • Scott and Jake Gentile fly the Aerostar together for the first time in almost two years. Now that Jake is an instrument rated CFI, things are different. We spent hours preflighting before flying. This was a casual flight, just getting used to procedures and to prepare for future cross country flights.

    The only problem I have with all the A2A products is that once you tried one, you can never go back to any other addons... Nothing else comes close to the realism, atleast in the GA niche.

    Every airplane is a unique animal, and this video proves that with the cold start

    • @ShockwaveProd
      @ShockwaveProd  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, the amount of primer required for a cold start was just one example of what even experienced pilots will consider a truth but you will only know certain things by experiencing them first hand. And even then, there are still unanswered questions. Our Comanche is also an aircraft that always needs primer, even for a hot start.

    When I first saw the cockpit I was like Luke Skywalker on laying eyes on the Millennium Falcon for the first time: “What a piece of junk!” But then Han Solo reminded me “She'll make point five past lightspeed. It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.” She’s a beauty!

    • @ShockwaveProd
      @ShockwaveProd  3 роки тому +1

      That is so funny as when I first saw the Aerostar cockpit it also reminded me of the Millennium Falcon. We will slowly make her pretty again, but I'm not in that much of a hurry. The main thing is this airplane is functionally solid.

    I would like to thank the two gentlemen who made this excellent video. The Aerostar has always been my favorite piston twin, and I absolutely love the sound those Lycomings make during take-off.
    Flying one of these has to be like flying a fighter jet. This fellow is a damn good pilot.

  • @AerostarPilot

    Looking at your start procedure there are a couple things I could recommend. For the cold start, advance the throttle about an inch or so, the prime for 4-5 seconds. Then bring the throttle back to to the stop then advance ab out 1/8 inch beyond where the lever binds a little. This should work perfect for you. What I was observing was the throttle was all the way closed when you were trying to start. There is a start procedure video on my channel, albeit for the 700 but it should still work fine for you. For a hot start, same thing but no prime and open the throttle about 1/4 inch. Hopefully you will get the plane up and flying again.

    My grandfather grew up with Ted Smith! He bought one of the first aerostars (semi-custom) and has been kept in a hangar inside Sedona, AZ. I have very fond memories of going up with him and learning everything about it. He used to tell me, that the aero was a UH-1 helo with wings! He passed away last year and left it to me, but I honestly have no idea where to start with her. I do not have my license, but have always been a flight sim enthusiast. The aircraft is in great condition, due to local pilots at the field taking care of her in honor of my grandfather. I hope, that one day soon I will be able to get my license and take her up where she belongs! Thank you for the content! Very motivational!

    Aerostar is one of the greatest planes ever dreamed, much less manufactured! I have been my dad's right seat second in command for 25 years in the same Aerostar 601P.
    Starting: we turn all fuel pumps on (both left and right), throttle closed, mixture full rich 3 to 6 seconds. Mixture idle cut off, throttle about 1.5-2". Should fire right up. We rarely have problems with flooding on initial start up. If so, go full throttle, mixture idle cut off, when it fires throw the mixture rich and throttle back, be fast on the hands and your in business!
    Alternator noise: defeneitly not normal, the bird is notorious for alternator issues, especially if you have an electric a/c unit. Check diodes and also voltage regulator on the aft cabin bulkhead.
    Gear down: Always wings level, ball centered, hard to tell in the video. Gear doors don't like side loads.
    Check out the AOA (Aerostar owners association), lots of great resources far better than me out there for additional information. Even after 25 years, dad and I learn something new almost every flight. Happy flying!

    To start 600A every time follow these instructions:
    1. Cold start. Throttle 1”, mixture fullrich , boost pump for 4.5 seconds. Leave throttle 1” and mixture rich. Crank it over and it will start second blade.
    2. Hot start. Throttle 1”, mixture full Rich, boost pump one second. Mixture to idle cutoff and go full throttle, Crank it over, will start after 3-4 blades. Once it fires push the mixture rich and pull the throttle back down to 1000rpm.

      Marc Aurel To my understanding, the SDK is finished (enough) if you build your plane from scratch using the new techniques. Most developers are not willing or able (time or financial-wise) to rebuild their software with the new techniques. They are waiting for Asobo to allow their C++ code in. Asobo is either playing a waiting game to convince them to rebuild, does not want this because of xbox compatibility, or simply hasn't had the time yet.

    Hey there, I was hoping you could answer a question? I was wondering if you might take into consideration making a smaller "classic" type aircraft? With other devos doing med to small types classics like Caranados D18S, Mandfred Jahns DC-3, Aerosofts DHC-2, Albaos C195, etc, do you plan on making another such classic airframe? If so, maybe something that rarely gets sim attention, such as the Lockheed 12a, the Beech Twin Bonanza D50C, or the North American Navion?

    My Dad is an A&P, IA and has been since before getting out of the Air Force in 1974. When you looked at his base pricing for inspections by model, Aerostar was the last one on the list and instead of a price, it said 'No Way, Jose". I asked him why under the impression it was a horrible aircraft. He said it was one of the finest aircraft ever built, it was just too damn difficult to work on. Just curious if the maintenance cost is ridiculous compared to other twins.

    • @falcondrvr200
      @falcondrvr200 3 роки тому

      As usual “it depends”. U get into the turbocharged and pressurized models, then yeah the price goes up. There’s also some unusual stuff on these planes compared to say a Baron, such a the hydraulics... mechanical pump on the right engine with an electronic backup... powering the gear, nose wheel steering and flaps. Plus of course, they’re rare as hell. Been 15 year since I’ve flown them/worked on them at DXR so take it for what it’s worth!

    As someone who has flown the Aerostar, I see your start process is a bit flawed. To prime the engine, crack the throttle (not halfway), mixture rich,, pump on FOR THE COUNT IF SIX (not 2, or 4, or 5). Pump OFF, Mixture back to LEAN. Engage Starter. Once engine catches, mixture RICH. This is for a cold engine. Hot engines same procedure EXCEPT SHORTER PRIME TIME. Hope this helps.
