Mae Clarke: The Tragic Life of the Frankenstein Star Hollywood Left Behind
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- You might remember Mae Clarke as Elizabeth in 1931's Frankenstein, or maybe for her controversial scene in The Public Enemy, but her life and story go so far beyond those moments on the screen. From her humble beginnings to her meteoric rise in the turbulent world of early Hollywood, Mae Clarke's life was as dramatic, as heartbreaking, and as riveting as the movies she starred in.

thank you for championing this underappreciated icon.
it’s a shame that her supporting bit against cagney is better remembered than her dazzling, heartbreaking star vehicle in WATERLOO BRIDGE.
keep up the great work!
Thank you for presenting this lovely tribute to Mae Clark. I've always enjoyed the films she did during the 1930s, especially "Three Wise Girls" with Jean Harlow and Marie Prevost. She was always so genuine and beautiful.
Thanks for a very well done tribute to an underrated star of the Golden Age. i had only known her by name as the grapefruit girl in Public Enemy, never even noticed she was in Frankenstein. Then I saw Waterloo Bridge and Wow, she was a great actress...I saw some others of her 30s films and I'm convinced she was an above average talent.
I had no idea that she struggled so much. I love her Myra in "Waterloo Bridge".
Thank you. Enjoyed.
SO glad that, as a Laemmle, you love early Hollywood and especially Universal horror as much as we do! You always have excellent and entertaining information...thank you!
Shes so pretty. Its really sad how many of these women were chewed up and spit out by old Hollywood
I see that same story over and over. I suppose it's not so different from today - but I'm almost comforted by the fact that the internet and social media has made it so much easier for celebrities to keep going after they're dismissed or forgotten by more "traditional" media
I always wondered why Clarke didn't play Elizabeth in "The Bride of Frankenstein". Now I know. Thanks, Antonia!
Good work Antonia!!! This is a great series! I’m looking forward to the one on Julie Adams.
Thank you for tbis video. Everybody needs to know these really hard stories so we can learn from them and do berrer.
I loved hee in Frankenstein.
MANY thanks, Antonia Carlotta! MUCH Love to Mae Clarke!
What a compassionate, empathetic portrait. The scream queens have found a true sister in you! I was really impressed by her work in Waterloo Bridge. It is much grittier than Vivien Leigh's (though I like it, too!) Thank you for advocating for the first Bride of Frankenstein! 🔩
Hey, is that your cat in the photo above the other Bride? 🐈
On my bookshelf? Those are two of my three cats! Pepper is the orange guy, and Vinnie is the white one. We also have a calico named Wasabi 🐈⬛
"...the first Bride of Frankenstein." Well put!

Cool! I now have a ginger named Oscar, with a great big round orange head! His little sister Felina is a tiny tortie, so gentle! Thanks for sharing. 🍊

Thanks, fellow Horror Hands fan! Do I rate maybe 7/10 Fricheks? 🙏🏻
@@h.calvert3165 nah that's 10/10 material all the way!
Check out Night World from 1932. That was a great showcase of Mae.
...co-starring Boris Karloff as her "boss." ;-)
Thank you for explaining why Mae Clarke wasn't in " The Bride of Frankenstein," which I didn't care for as much as the original. Valerie Hobson didn't resemble Mae Clarke, and there were different actors portraying the mayor and little Maria's father. John Boles' character completely disappeared, too. Anyway, thanks again for your presentation.
Nice tribute, Antonia. My favorite Mae Clarke performance is Waterloo Bridge. Myra just breaks my heart. It's one of my 3 favorite performances of the early 1930, along with Fay Eray in King Kong and Jean Harlow in Red Dust.
You are awesome!!
Excellent and very touching presentation of a talented actress who faced many challenges and was nonetheless happy with her life. She was quite beautiful and must make a gorgeous angel.. ❤❤❤❤
Well done! Thank you for introducing us to the woman.
It's always great when another one in this series drops! 10/10 fricheks
PS - i aint gonna tell u what to do or nuthin but if you find interesting stuff for a Gloria Holden episode i'd LOVE it!
I welcome it!! I’m going to finish the “core” Universal Monster women, and then this has definitely inspired me to keep the series going with other Universal women. Gloria Holden is HIGH on that list 🖤
it didnt make any sense 2 recast her in Bride w Valerie Hobson but it still worked i guess
It just seems so strange knowing how well she and James Whale got along and had worked together. Did something else happen?
Antonia remember hearing he was mad with Boris Karloff and maid him run all the way in full costume and prosetics.think James Whale could be cruel at times
First video I've watched on your channel, great job! Very informative.
She was good in Waterloo Bridge. Bette Davis was in it too.
Wow your hair is getting really long! Love your content. Thanks for doing these videos about the woman in film. Cheers
Another fascinating video.
Great job!
IMHO one of the most underrated actresses of old Hollywood. I think her Myra in Waterloo Bridge is superior to Vivien Leigh's and she's so good in Frankenstein and The Public Enemy. Thanks for the video. I'm a huge Perry Mason fan but I can't remember her episode. Something to look forward to finding. Thanks.
I liked her as Elizabeth more than the replacement she had a bit more warmth and delicacy in her portrayal it’s a shame that James Whale didn’t fight to keep her in the role.
i hope you do one one evelyn ankers and her poor working relationship with lon chaney jr.
Excellent presentation. Although I'm sure it never ranked highly in her resume, she also starred in my favorite Republic serial, "King of the Rocket Men" with Tris Coffin (as a good guy!) The entire cast of that one seem oddly energized and give 100%. Maybe Clarke's professionalism was an inspiration?
It's too bad that she was on the wrong end of an iconic moment in movie history. They should have let her smack Cagney back in that movie. It would have been better for her and also foreshadowed women fighting back in the future in real life.
Women were ladies back then.
Feel I confusedMay Clark with may west unfortunately.will you cover the English lady who played Bride of Frankenstein.?
Her Fiancee married someone else on holiday & she only found out by reading about it in the papers?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Unbelievable! She had a terrible romantic history, I'm glad she was rediscovered in later life & got fan mail again
that's Hollywood for you back then and now.
When did you jaunt across to see "Oh, Mary!", out of curiosity? 😀
Hollywood same ever !
Wolf Man trailer?
There's a touch of Naomi Watts to Ms. Clarke's face.
Carrie Mulligan also bears a resemblance to Mae. It might be from how she looked in Great Gatsby.
I didn't like her in Frankenstein.
Hobson was prettier
@@josephvitielo1693 Who is Hobson?
@@susanb2015 she replaced Mae Clarke as Collin Clive wife in The Bride of Frankenstein Valerie Hobson
@@josephvitielo1693 I meant I didn't like the character. I think Mae is prettier.
You are a super silly woman.
ANT- gotta work on that vocal fry. It creeps in.
