    That RGB header is actually to allow control of the GPU RGB FROM the motherboard or other RGB controller, not vice versa. I learned this the hard way. I have two Sapphire Nitro cards, and the first one I bought was because I thought it was the reverse, and my motherboard at the time did not have RGB. Imagine my annoyance.

      Yes. The instructions included w/ the card are not clear (or rather, clearly incorrect).
      TBF, I *think* it can function 'as written' if your mobo's ARGB can be 'reverse powered' through the header while kept 'off'.

    That's the card I wanted to get but was out of stock. Ended up getting Powercolor fighter version instead.
    On the plus-side, the fighter only just managed to fit in my NXZT H440 and I doubt many, if any other 7900gre would fit. Beast of a card for the price.

    I recently phased out our youngest child's 5700xt for a 7700xt (£370) and I was looking at the 7800xt to replace my 6750XT but landed on the RX 7900 GRE at £520.
    The 5700xt sold for £170 and the 6750xt sold for £300 so respectively we were out £200 for the 7700xt and £220 for the GRE. No complaints. I did have to upgrade cooling for both so savings are relative when cooling upgrades came to £200 for both rigs total including a psu upgrade for padding. Not enough money was recouped on the old cooling systems and psu to qualify them in savings.
    We game on these rigs. Just game. No dlss/rt (that mostly is not even supported in most of our games) for us. Also we weren't interested in over paying for horrific price for performance.
    Cheers for this. I need to figure out how much of the Pure I will need to gut to get that lame plastic red logo off so the build is just white. Not white with a pimple of a choice on a white card.

    The only thing that TriXX Boost does is create custom resolutions and make them visible to games. You just set that custom resolution in the game, and either your monitor or GPU scales the output up to the native resolution. It's literally just running at a lower resolution, with more options for what that lower resolution is.
    Any game which hard-codes a specific list of resolutions and filters them by capability, rather than querying the system for supported resolutions, will not work, unless you can manually force the resolution in question.
    The real benefit comes with using RSR in combination with TriXX Boost. If you enable RSR, that will scale the game's output resolution instead of standard GPU scaling (which is just Lanczos on AMD) or the monitor. TriXX Boost just gives you more granularity in choosing the render resolution.
    Using built-in FSR will provide better quality in pretty much all cases.

    • @beeman4266
      @beeman4266 Місяць тому

      How do you get TriXX boost? I have a 7900xtx and don't really use any frame gen usually. But occasionally theres some games I'd like to use it for but occasionally I won't have the option to bump the resolution down to like 2540x1420 or whatever the one right below 1440p is. If I change it to 1080p it messed with all my open windows and everything.

    I had read that AMD re-enabled access to the OverDrive API on Navi 3x, in Linux. Any chance we might get an OCing-in-Linux guide?

    Could you PLEASE do a small video on OVERCLOCKING THIS CARD??? This is the card I have been eye'ing up and I REALLY want to know how well it does in the OC side of things.. I've seen only 1 other video OC'ing the GRE and it was the Hellhound card that was sent to all the reviewers.. which is the one I DO NOT want lol .....
    and with the AWESOME THINGS I'm guessing NO ONE KNEW ABOUT (except people that already bought it) like the FAN and RGB headers, the TriXX software, and even DUAL HDMI you REALLY SOLD ME ON THIS BEAUTY!!!! I just don't know if I should wait for the 8000 series to come out... I don't THINK this would be considered their 'high-end' card (maybe they call it their TOP 'mid-range' card 🤷‍♂) and I don't know if they will make this into a Monolithic die 8700 GRE .... OR will they keep it just like it is along with the 7900 XT & XTX (there will NOT be new versions of these cards from what I understand) - Sooooo I just want to know if it REALLY IS this amazing 'all around' card for only 6 bills like I think it is...
    So do you think you might be able to do a short video on overclocking this card??? MAYBE you could compare the overclocking to the other GRE's you have 🤷‍♂ (and yes, I TOTALLY understand the silicon lottery and your results may not be anything like mine would be... I just want to get an idea of what to expect.... because the Hellhoud I saw overclocked REALLY IMPROVED RAY TRACING by a DECENT BIT, competing with 4070 Ti in Cyberpunk...
    okay I'll shhhhhhhh for now :)
    THANKS WENDELL!!! :D

    • @nottsoserious
      @nottsoserious Місяць тому +2

      Gonna be honest. All Sapphire Nitro cards have plenty of thermal headroom and power delivery for over locking. Silicon lottery is just a lottery. No review can tell you how your particular card will OC.

      @@nottsoserious The Asus $600 model and the Powercolor Hellhound have had 'better' results for OCing and cooling in reviews.

    • @spladam3845
      @spladam3845 Місяць тому +1

      This model is $50 more, and it makes little sense as that puts you into RTX 4070 Super territory, which is more efficient at about 60W less power use, has better frame gen and RTX support, and almost the same raster performance. The extra 4GB frame butter on the GRE is nice, but you get that on all the $550 parts, like Sapphire's own Pulse model, which seems to overclock just as well.
      Overclocking this GPU involves turning up the power target, UNDERVOLTING the cores, and turning up the max boost and testing to see if it holds a higher boost speed. Kitguru got the Pulse to overclock higher than the Nitro model, both well above 2.6Ghz, the Pulse pretty much at 2.7. The $50 cheaper Sapphire model overclocked better than it's fancy $50 more RGB big brother. Overclocking this GPU seems to generate about ~9% improvement in Raster.

    Good review. I'm personally interested in 7900 GRE model from Powercolor. Still a little hesitant because I also use Blender for rendering as a hobby and there the Nvidia cards are way ahead thanks to Optix. But Nvidia cards have become so expensive and have only sad 12GB of VRAM for a similar price... And since I use Pop!_OS now, I probably should go with AMD for the open source drivers.

    The Nitro + GRE is $50 more, and that kind of kills most of the reason to buy a GRE. In two other test I've seen the Pulse version overclocked better or same as the Nitro, one of those test was by kitguru, where they managed to get both cards well over 2.6Ghz, the Pulse version doing JUST under 2.7Ghz.
    I'm trying to decide between a GRE and a 4070 Super, so paying $50 more for RGB and a fan header makes little sense.

      7800XT Nitro+ and 7900GRE Nitro+ share PCB, cooler, etc. (Other GREs appear to share PCB, etc. w/ 7800XTs, too)
      The Navi31 in the GRE is a mobile-derived part, and is pin/package-compatible with Navi32 (7800). The first appearance of the 'small package' Navi31 (navi32 form factors/pkg) was the 7900M in one of Alienware's laptops.

      @@BrunodeSouzaLino It's 'in there' 😁
      The 7900 GRE's Navi31 is in the 7800s Navi32 "package". So, GRE PCBs are all based off 7800XT cards, not 7900XT/XTX.
      7900XT/XTX 'came out first'
      While, the 7900GREs are built upon *later-revision* (overTGP) 7800 PCBs.
      It's 'interesting' but, largely "academic".
      If I were to guess, it has to do with the 7800s being a 'high volume sales' part, having revisions/features to make it 'more attractive'. (Bigger=better? Lol)

  • @RFC3514
    @RFC3514 Місяць тому

    9:18 - It's probably not the total amount of VRAM, it's the bandwidth. You'll generally see a drop in performance due to total amount of VRAM when enabling high(est)-res textures, regardless of screen resolution. When you see a big drop in performance due to increased _screen_ resolution, it's generally due to memory bandwidth.
    Rendering a game at 4k doesn't actually need a lot more VRAM (the total amount of VRAM depends mainly on the size and amount of models and textures loaded, which, if you max out the settings, is going to be nearly identical at 1080 or 4k). But running at 4k _does_ require moving 4x more data to composite each frame, so bandwidth becomes a big issue.

      Out-of-box v. Out-of-Box (in Rasterization-only), the 7900GRE is a nearly a 'stand-in' for the 6950XT.
      W/ AMD 'unlocking' some higher OC limits on the GRE (and 2499-2501Mhz vRAM set), the GRE easily bests the *worst-OCing* 6900XTs and 6950XTs.
      The 6950XT has less RT performance, is less efficient *but* Higher Power limits and OC-ability.
      (Sadly, no amount of OCing will compensate for the generational improvements in RT between RDNA2 and RDNA3)
      Still, the 6950XT is a 'legit' "beefy card". -and, probably not worth upgrading away from, for some time.

But the physical size would suggest otherwise. I have the 7800XT Nitro (same cooler) and the biggest appeal is how beefy and industrial it makes your build look. These days the price has come down a lot too so it's imo the "cheapest" way to get that super high end 'look' to your PC. If you care about having a nice looking build. Everyone is so laser focused on the fact they finally have a half decent value card after 4 years of shit value they're oblivious to the fact it's about to be replaced just months after launch. (Read: 3090ti and 3080ti)
    AMD _HAS_ to unload them for cheap because it's about to become worth much less this fall. If you buy "refresh" models you buy them when the next generation comes out and they offer the best value. Buying them now is a thinly veiled disguise to get rid of stock before it's value drops.

    I'm happy. 500$ GPU? No thanks

    I have an RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6, and it's a pile of crap. Drivers constantly crash in windows 11 requiring a hard reset. AMD blames M$, M$ blames AMD. There won't be a solution.

      I don't know if by hard reset you mean full drivers reinstall, but if it is your case I suggest you to try this, even more if you have Epic Games Launcher installed.
      it took me weeks of digging through forums to find this, i think it was on AMD community support by a guy named Birkulex, a lot of people with various AMD GPUs reported that it worked for them, and it did for me with both an RX580 and an RX6600.
      In windows explorer try going to "%localappdata%\EpicGamesLauncher\Saved" and "%localappdata%\EpicGames\Saved" and rename/delete the folder named "logs" (in the forum thread people mentioned having that folder even without ever installing EGL), now AMD drivers and radeon software should go back to working properly.

    I’m so frustrated on AMD’s behalf that they sold out the high-end Radeon brand so cheap this generation. If you just go by the hundreds digit on Radeon versus the tens digit on Nvidia, you’d think that Nvidia were a full seven SKUs ahead in the states. Nvidia is able to command a premium over the 7900 GRE for:
    RTX 4070
    RTXD 4070 Super
    RTX 4070 Ti
    RTX 4070 Ti Super
    RTX 4080
    RTX 4080 Super
    RTX 4090 (not counting the 4090D in China since where one is available you do not expect to find the other).
    Now what is AMD going to do when they have a high-end card again? Charge double or more for a card with the same hundreds digit? Even Nvidia couldn’t get away with moving the 80 class from “$699” to $1200 in one generation. Radeon? Forget about it.

      Dude you do know AMD has way less mindshare then Nvidia. And people/youtubers/media recommend Nvidia to a point that AMD would have to be 15+% better overall in the same price segment to beat out the Nvidia mindshare machine.
