That bit at the end about learning art is great. I took a painting class once and the teacher summed it up as "allow for failure, but dont stand for it". Art and fear are two sides of a coin and if you let fear - fear of "messing up" or failure - stop you, you wont get anywhere. And that kind of thing is easy to say, but hard to swallow.
love what you said about learning to paint. it does take work ( but the work is fun) I always passed on neutral tint. I might pick up a tube now. I'll be in touch about the collab:)
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weiricc Hi Lindsay - Great Live demo today on your channel ua-cam.com/users/thefrugalcrafter For sure, you should try out the neutral, it's pretty cool as way to mix for toned shadows or just to get darker colors without going too dark. Looking forward to hearing from you on the collab, sounds like great fun! - Marty
i was so lucky to met the owner of daniel smith, Mr John, when he was having a workshop in my country. such a great guy and I fell in love with the paint. great video!
Nice review and true indeed you are so right there is no short cuts. Its takes having a passion, practice, and studying. Its also good to know who you are as a artist and to stay encouraged.
Great. Thanks for sharing. Alvaro is a legend. Love his style. Neutral tint is awesome, as you say, you can add to get more punch in shadows, for example. DS are great paint.
Great video Marty! Alvaro is totally incredible. He is the artist I always look at when I start to forget how important contrast dynamics are in my work. Very inspiring guy. And I love your comments towards the end. "Invest in your art everyday." Well said. Your video format is looking quite sharp my friend, I can see you've made some subtle improvements. Love your fun opening!
+The Mind of Watercolor Hi Steve - Thanks for the note as always and for noticing some of the improvements. I'm trying to also elevate the content a little by taking more suggestions and ideas from the channel subscribers. I love this guy Alvaro, what a fascinating character. How do you pronounce his last name by the way? Hope you're have a GREAT week! - Marty
Hi Marty. I'm new to watercolor, I'm just getting to know my colors and tecniques ECT. And I too have loved the neutral tint. It is fascinating color. Especially mixing with other colors. And even on it's own. Thank you for your informative videos. And the link to that experienced painter, I'll check him out for sure. Like your videos. Karen from Canada.
I have to say that what you said in the video about investing in learning/doing art everyday is so very true. I'm seeing proof of that in my art work from the stuff I did months ago to now, there is a difference as I learn more and better and from my mistakes (I don't see failures the same as others do) I improve. Failures are our way of learning that's why they're not really failures, it's growing from what was to the possibilities of what can be!
Marty, thank you for your wise words. I agree, people now days want instant gratification. I think that's what holds a lot of people back, especially young people. It's our investment in the exprenince of art that over time developes us as artists. 💞
Thanks for sharing the review. Those colours are so vivid. And as with everything worthwile in life, the journey towards the goal is just as rewarding as the goal itself. Knowing this, who even wants shortcuts?
Thank you for saying that about not being any shortcuts, it really is the product of a lot of investigation and hard work to achieve the things you want in art, no matter what your style is, it always takes a lot of time and 99% practice! Loved this review 💛💛💛💛
You are so right. What a great review of this dynamic set. Practice and failure is the only way to succeed in watercolor or life. You can learn about the tools such as paper quality, pigment quality, mastering the wetness of your paper, washes, composition, value and tone, THEN you see an artist like Alvaro find his own path to perfection. I recently snagged this set for $30 and am using it for a trip to Alaska this fall. I'll be balancing out the colors (since I have room for 15 colors in my palette). I'm adding a cool yellow (Hansa Yellow Light), a cooler blue (Phthalo Blue GS), a cool red (Quin Magenta, since it also is the color of fireweed which I love to paint), Deep Sap Green & Serpentine Genuine. I'm thinking of switching out the Varidian (which isn't a favorite green of mine). What would you suggest I replace that last color with???? Inquiring minds, and all that. LOL
Great review Marty. The comments and honesty at the end are invaluable especially to newbies or up and coming artist! A collaboration with Linsay would be VERY COOL! A watercolor fest with you, Lindsay, AND Steve would be awesome! Maybe a Q&A. Appreciate all my favorite mentors and all you share!😊🎨
+Denise Chapel Thank you Denise. Nothing like hard work and practice for many years to make an overnight success. :-) Thanks for watching and for your encouragement, it means a lot. - Marty
Great review, Marty. I love my Daniel Smith watercolors, but had not thought to purchase one of their "artist sets." I agree, Castagnet is amazing. Thanks for all you do with these reviews.
The first fine tube paint set purchased. I still have the colors on my main palette. I use the viridian green to mix other greens. I did add a hansa yellow light and a magenta red to aid in mixing. I use DS Neutral tint, but I also love M Graham neutral tint which has a violet hint.
I'm honored you took the time to watch John. You've got me beat in the experience department. Thank you for taking a moment to leave a comment, I appreciate it very much. - Marty
Love your outlook - just go and paint, its good for the soul :) Yep, no shortcut - just practice and enjoy the process! Thanks for your review on Daniel Smith... will have to get some one day :D
+halowolf The Hydrus are very different and almost belong in their own category. Daniel Smith are superior to Winsor & Newton Astist grade paints in my opinion. Winsor & Newton are still great though, just not as good as Daniel Smith. - Marty
love this set, the neutral tint is a nice addition! thanks for showing this all. this brand in Holland is pretty expensive in the Artist line of other brands. So I m very interested to know why?"is it the pigment formula s?
Oh Thank-you so much! I was practicing today, I did a little better but I don't feel confident enough to color in the drawing I did for my niece, it took me a while to get the drawing right so I don't want to ruin it by not being ready to color it properly. I'm looking forward to learning, thanks again Marty and have a good weekend!
+Hermione Jarvis Hi Hermoine - Do you have access to a copy machine or scanner/printer? If you do you could copy your original, print it and paint on the copy. - Marty

Hey Marty!I'm a young artist and I particularly enjoy watching your videos about watercolor reviews. They're quite informative and I like how you compare the product to all the other brands you've tried out before. I have a question regarding watercolors. I've been thinking of investing on an artist quality set, but the brands available in my country (the Philippines) are Daniel Smith, Sennelier, Winsor and Newton, Rembrandt, Mission Mijello, and QoR. I have tried a couple of Holbein tubes but I didn't enjoy them mainly because they aren't as active whenever I do wet-on-wet. Since you have tried most of the paints I've mentioned, I would like your opinion on the selection. I want something that is very vibrant, but I also don't want it to look too artificial. (If that makes sense) I'm quite young so I don't have the money to go out and try all the brands I've mentioned. Plus most of these are only available online here. I really look forward to hearing from you and your thoughts about this. -Nicole
+Nicole J Thank you very much for the kind comments and the great question. Of the paints you mentioned, I would first go with Daniel Smith, they are both vibrant, but not over the top vibrant. Second choice would be Sennelier. Sean's are made with honey and they're luminous and beautiful. I think you'll love either of those. And both work well wet on wet. I hope this helps. Thank you! Marty
+SuperFlawless9 Hi Patrick - Thanks for the question. My favorites are probably Schmincke, Daniel Smith and Sennelier. Here is a link to the Sennelier video on their site. They make them with honey so there is luminance, or glow to them. www.sennelier-colors.com/en/Aquarelle_8.html

Truth!! There are no ways to learn stuff faster. LOTS OF PRACTICE. So many people always saying that I'm so clever when they see my art. I'm not clever, I always tell them, I just like doing it enough to put in almost two decades drawing. Lol.

Ok thanks, I'm still looking! My FC Polychromos came today, I tried them out right away and they lay down very smooth like butter, but I had a difficult time trying to blend and build the colors, I bought the 60 count. Would you consider doing a tutorial on how to do this? I've been looking for any good ones on YT and they are not really how-to videos, just the fast speed through kind. I'd appreciate any help or advice that you could give on how to successfully use them, Thanks so much Marty, take care!

If Alvaro is in his 50s now it took him well over 10-20 years of WORK. I am an aspiring PAINTER not "artist", I have talent etc but even for me it can take days to "get" inspiration and the truth is you dont get inspiration you create it. I am not a plen air painter like Alvaro I dont draw or paint stuff from reality most often but it takes WORK to get inspiration too. It doesnt come with talent...
Hi Marty. From the videos I've seen on Alvaro, his name is pronounced "Kastanay". You can see a great demo he did on a show of Graeme Stevenson's Colour in Your Life: ua-cam.com/video/eCMj9SEz5Fs/v-deo.html . Thanks for the demo. Oh, and the secret to learning is: shhh! (it's practice, practice, practice) ;-).
+KaBluey59 Thanks KaBluey59, I think you're right about the pronunciation, but I've heard it both ways so had to pick. :-) I love Graeme Stevenson's Colour In Your Life series, that's where I discovered this Artist Castagnet. Happy Saturday! - Marty
I can't remember where I heard it, but some study was done that determined that you need to practice for at least 10,000 hours to gain some mastery over a skill.
+Judy Mason That's right the 10k rule they call it. I think that's probably pretty close, plus or minus a couple thousand depending on talent and discipline. Thanks for watching Judy. - Marty

Hey Marty!I'm a young artist and I particularly enjoy watching your videos about watercolor reviews. They're quite informative and I like how you compare the product to all the other brands you've tried out before.
I have a question regarding watercolors. I've been thinking of investing on an artist quality set, but the brands available in my country
(the Philippines) are Daniel Smith, Sennelier, Winsor and Newton, Rembrandt, Mission Mijello, and QoR.
Plus most of these are only available online here. great info Marty! what are your favorite watercolor pants?
+SuperFlawless9 Hi Patrick - Thanks for the question. My favorites are probably Schmincke, Daniel Smith and Sennelier. Here is a link to the Sennelier video on their site. They make them with honey so there is luminance, or glow to them. www.sennelier-colors.com/en/Aquarelle_8.html

Does the burnt sienna light compare to a raw sienna?
Hi Lori - They are bit different. As the "light" would indicate you will get a bit lighter color. I wouldn't spend money on the "Light" though, instead, just add a little more water and you'll get the same effect in my experience. Thanks for the question! ~marty
Love the truth. Everything worthwhile takes time no matter what it is.

- Marty

Yes Aafke.
Sorry, but the cheesy music makes this unwatchable.
Bummer, because I produced all that music myself and it took me decades. The reviews are just a vehicle for my musical expression.
