Thank you for this therapeutic video. I’m suffering from anxiety lately and wake up at night and can’t go back to sleep. Came across your video tonight and it make me feel calm and happy. Just want to say thank you before trying to go back to sleep. Have fun with your painting!
cherriercheung: I am a new subscriber, and I just read your comment. I prayed for you that God will remove your anxiety, and you will feel more calm and happy! I hope you are doing better! God bless you!
WOW ! Great tutorial. Never have I sat through a color mixing class. But your knowledge was very helpful for me to be inspired to do some watercolor straight from the tubes. Up to now, I have been using only premade dry pans. I am ready to go for it. So far, I only have student grade Windsor Newtons. But having you demonstrate the simple primary colors for me has encouraged me to do it soon and without fail. You already made up some of the beautiful violet colors by mixing the French Marine blue and the warm red. I’m aiming to do some lilacs which are currently flowering in my yard. So, thank you very much.
Fantastic !! I will use this video to back up what I always say to people - you do NOT need a huge palette with many colours. It all comes down to using the three primaries in a clever and "thinking way. Your videos inspire me to get out my paints and brushes and "give it a go" Thank you for emphasizing "try it and HAVE FUN"
Haha thank you for the awesome comment - I'm really happy to hear this - let me know how it goes! (: And you really don't need to much to get started and create tons of different colors.
Fantastic! Just what I needed. I had finished drawing a Victorian-era house earlier & reached for my DS paints, but preparing my palette left me staring at my colour wheel for an hour -getting no where fast. Your video was insightful, informative & delightful, (and saved me from either a dull painting or another hour(s) staring at that colour wheel.) Thank you for an extra hour or two of sleep. -A new fan (subscribed.)
So happy to hear that 😊🙏🏼 These are excellent paints and you don't need many to get started! I really like minimizing my palette and thus - minimizing the decision-making process as well (;
I've really been looking for a set like this since I have oil paints in a similiar colour scheme regarding primaries and loved learning how to mix colour together with them. When I recently switched back to my customized pallet of Koi watercolours with Wndsor and Newton watercolours, I finally realized why my little 12 pallet didn't produce the colours I wanted. I was missing a cool red, didn't need the purple or the light purple I mixed with a white, didn't have a warm blue, etc... Thank you for the review and for actually testing them by creating mixes. It really helped me become more informed about what these paints can do and why (for me) they're going to be a good investment.
I'm making the upgrade next payday. I've spent the last year getting used to watercolours and techniques, and my mom made sure I knew colour theory as a kid ( I was in a LOT of colouring contests and won almost all of them), so now I'm confident that I'm ready to try colour mixing. I have the Paul Ruben watercolour set, and it's lovely, quality paint, but they're mostly double pigment colours, and I want to switch to a palette that is mostly single pigment watercolours, so I'm building a palette with Daniel Smith paint. Of the 12 colours I've chosen, only two are double pigment, so I should get some beautiful mixes. I also love letting paint flow on the paper and granulation, so I'm sure I'm going to love these paints
I have this set, and I’m going to try mixing it myself. I’m having trouble seeing your colors, but this will be fun to see in better light. I know you’re going with natural light here.
Hi Liron, I just started to paint with watercolor. And I purchased this set and also white and raw umber. What colors you can suggest to me to buy to go with it also? Thanks 🙏
Awesome! I think what you have is more than enough to get started (: The essentials set can really get you far. Unless you're looking for a very specific color, I wouldn't necessarily get more in the beginning. (I could personally do with 3 colors only haha, but you may be different and that's ok 👌) If you do see a color you really like, and think may be useful - I'd get that.
I think the 6 set is much more useful over all! (: But I believe you pay a little more per ml (not 100% sure though, will depend on retailer / store). So ideally I would buy the larger tubes of the 6 paints in this vid. But if you want to avoid committing to a large quantity, the smaller tubes are a great choice (:
Im getting this set to try our Daniel Smith. Currently, I use W&N but I wanted to try DS paints. I can’t wait for my delivery to get in! Lol. I like using my paints from pans so I am hoping Daniel Smith will work well when put into pans.
I used this set SO MUCH, and it works great in pans (: Each paint settles a little differently into the pans. New Gamboge (at least the one I got, I heard they changed the recipe) is a little thicker straight out of the tube, so it keeps its shape. Most of the other ones are a little thinner and fill the pans, taking their shapes.
I have a beginner question. I get the cool and warm when talking about yellows and reds as the “cooler ones have more blue, but when talking about blues, what constitutes a “warm” blue versus a “cool” blue?
Tyvm Liron for this video. I just saw it today and was asking my self if you can explain this also with the schmincke horadam. I work with them and think more of us are doing that. I cant find a lot about schmincke on the www, but saw you are working also with it......and gives us a lot of information here about the schmincke watercolor tyvm for that also. Maybe you have put it down here already ( I mean mixing cool and warm colors) but unfortunaly I cant find it. tyvm
Thank you for the great idea! 🙏🏼 It does seem like there’s much more info out there about Daniel Smith. I’ll consider doing a similar video for Schmincke 😊
Thank you so much, Liron! I just got the Essentials set as a gift and this is exactly the kind of video I wanted to see: how to *use* and *mix* the colors.
Hi Liron. Are you in Israel? Are Daniel Smith watercolors available there. My friend's a painter and I want to suggest these paints to her. I love them. Thanks.
I am indeed in Israel. These are a little hard to find here. I get them from Amazon. It's much easier to find here ShinHan PWC (May Art - Dizingoff Centre), St. Petersburg White Nights (Arta) and Winsor & Newton (Arta).
I have just found your channel and I really really love it :) Thanks for your video's and keep it up! Also, I like that you use natural light. It makes a world of difference. Maybe you can up the exposure in editing just a tiny bit to give it a bit more vibrance (without influencing the representation of the colors)? Just a tip from one youtuber to another. But again, keep making your video's :)
Thank you for the kind words and advice! I just recently got a new editing software (best decision ever), but still haven't gotten the chance to play around with the more advanced adjustments. I'll definitely try this out the next few videos! Your channel is beautiful too, even though I can't understand what you say :D
Haha! Thanks, I'm dutch :) What software do you use? I just recently started experimenting with the auto color correction, auto levels and auto contrast (I use premiere pro). It makes EVERYTHING look better lol! Have fun and I will be following you :D
I could tell you are Dutch (: I'm actually using Filmora. I love the simplicity and it's really great for all my current applications. It also has some pretty advanced video corrections and adjustments. And thank you! I hope you'll enjoy, I plan on some very cool stuff in the near future (:
I am struggling to mix greens. Any suggestions to make it more successful? Like should I start with the blue and add just a touch of yellow or start with the yellow?
It doesn't really matter what you start with, as long as you get both blue and yellow. What's the struggle? Do you not like the result? What about it? Do the paints not mix properly? Let me know and I'll try to help (:
I don’t like the results. I’m going to experiment a bit today with a bit more patience. I will let you know if I can figure out a specific question. Thanks!
Sure thing! It could also be the color combination. I don't like, for example, the green created by mixing Phthalo Blue and Lemon Yellow. It's too cool for me. I prefer more natural and muted greens from Phthalo Blue + Indian Yellow, for example. Maybe switching out your primary colors will help (:
Liron Yanconsky I think you are exactly right. I was taking a class and the colors were suggested for us. Think I will try to paint it again using a different combination. Cerulean blue and lemon yellow made a pretty combination but very pale. And cadmium red is more opaque than I think I would like. So will paint the scene a third time using a different pallet. Thank you for that suggestion!
hi Liron, thank you for all your videos, they're super informative and funny sometimes:) I'm also learning watercolour, it became my real passion, love the paints themselves, the colors and all the painting process. I got into the color theory, painting milions of muxing charts and color wheels:)) but I still wonder is there any the basic rule about mixing warm with warm, cool with cool and cool with warm. I would have a theory, but for me french ultramarine acts kind of against it. I' m kind of lost:)) what mixes give the most pure colors, warm +cool? i try to undarstand, but maybe there is no need to undestand:))) maybe it's just a question of practice:)
Thank you for the kind comment (: I appreciate it! You ask a good question. First, I think it's a matter of ratio (how much you mix of each paint, warm or cool). Then, I think there's the individual properties of each paint, how strongly pigmented it is and so on. I can tell you that Phthalo blue and Pyroll scarlet are SUPER-strong, at least in my experience. When I pick them from their pans I need to be very gentle and not pick up too much, because otherwise they just over-dominate the mixture I already have. What I DO find that happen in many cases, is that (warm + warm) or (cool + cool) simply mix to create a new color, while (warm + cool) can slightly mute / dim / gray out each other. I'm sure this isn't a hard rule, and depends on the pigments themselves. But from my experience, especially with this set, it happens quite often. And then again, like you say, it's also a matter of practice. A LOT of practice :D
Liron Yanconsky thank you! I have just done two color wheels using cool and warm colors by D.S. and wanted to attache them to this comment, but I don't thinak it's possible. used: hansa yellow, Alizarin and Phtalo and on the second one: new gamboge, pyrrole red scarlett (so beautiful!) and ultramarine. The warm one is very "earthy", very muted. The cool one is brighter, stronger and quite "pure" (maybe also in comparison with warm where there is much granulation due to ultramarine). Anyway it was an interesting experience:) Pity I can't attache the pictures:)))
Irena Hryniak Sound really cool (: If you want to you can send them to me to liron at lironyan.com and I'll take a look (I can also share them in a video, if you'd like to, of course. Could be fun and people can see how helpful it is to make these kinds of studies!).
This one is a Silver Black Velvet. I have sizes 8 and 12. The one you see in the vid is 8, but I highly recommend getting a larger one too (they come in sets of 3). Hope this helps (:

Hi what do you think is better? Buy this set of the set of 3 paints of 15ml? Red, yellow and blue

How can distinguish warm and coold color in same kind of color?
What is the name of your brush?

Hope this helps (:
I am so happy that you did this I have trouble to distant the warm and cool colors saying the name of them helps a lot thank you so much
And how much size?
