if your not going to use the full exhaust ,input pipe included, then the obvious quicker and more efficient option is to simply take that gray container,half fill it with water and add a short steel 2" pipe directly up to the exhaust outlet and just bubble the very hot gasses directly through that static water, then place as much plastic pipe heat transfer loop in that heated water tub, job done, if you are still not going to take advantage of the free ground submerging insulation all around but for digging the hot storage containers pits and hypocaust inclined 1 in 6 soil conduits to where you want the heat to be by design,
Might there be more pliable tubing that can withstand the surface temperatures, for a quick wrap? I wonder how much heat could be extracted from a car muffler and oil and closed circuit generate electricity for a hybrid support moter and battery. 70% of the internal combustion power is heat lost to the atmosphere and eventually partially or fully to the vacuum of space.
Cloxxki, I like your idea and understand your desire for a better working fluid but I would still restrict my choices to noncombustible fluids simply for safety sake. This whole concept has me thinking back to marine engine exhaust manifolds which had a double wall construction as they were water cooled just like the engine block. A more pliable tubing would definitely be a cheaper and more universal solution though.
you can use high temp insolated PEX with a "leader" piece to transfer the heated fluid and help conserve the heat during transport, but the actual exchanger portion of the system needs to be a very conductive material. but honestly, in an emergency, heating water for cooking is one thing, and using the excess to heat the house if the generator is running anyway, but otherwise to stay warm, just wear warm clothes. I winter camp in Upstate NY with a hammock at -14°F, and NO heat source except my good 'ol body heat, insulated with ethically sourced down or Climashield APEX insulation (probably best for situations like hurricanes where you need to stay warm even if you get wet, though that might even be overkill for temps over freezing.)
How about submerge the entire exhaust system in water then have a heat exchanger in the heated up fluid? Possibly submerge the entire engine with a driveshaft connecting to the generator head unit?
Cooling down the muffler will increase the rate that nasty stuff from the exhaust gasses will condense on the inside of the muffler, killing the muffler sooner. Do you have a way of addressing that issue?
The muffler stays above 400˚ F, even higher as the amount of surface area needed is nowhere near 100%. The final wrap would include a tight loop like the first video in this series for the exhaust off or out of the muffler to capture the heat from the exhaust. This would not block the exhaust flow. Keep in mind mufflers and catalytic converters which require heat to preform properly are different. Semi and auto exhaust systems constantly have water splashed on them while driving in the rain and are cooled with airflow while traveling 70 miles per hour.
You could also use an EGR cooler from a car and attach it directly to the exhaust outlet. I've always had the idea of running a generator on natural gas and using all the waste heat for heating and hot water.
I did this on mine. I used one from a Jetta. Make sure you use egr coolers built like boilers. With a set of tubes as the heat exchanger. The other design uses essentially radiator type fins. They are prone to burning out if there is a lack of coolant flow through them. Tube design is more forgiving.

You mentioned that you shouldn't use the exhaust to heat air for your heat source due to potential CO poisoning. Actually, VWs used a heat exchanger wrapped round the exhaust manifold to provide cabin heat to the passenger compartment on their air cooled vehicle engines. I agree though. DIY people shouldn't be designing something like that.
No pump but a "Heat Pump" will ever heat water any noticeable amount, that would be completely ridiculous. In Colorado we used 400 feet of inch and a quarter Poly pipe to heat our pool. With the insulation blanket and small pump after 3 days of Sunshine the pool would stay 80 or so.

extend your exuast with a straight heavy duty metal pipe that goes right threw the side of the tank and comes out the other side with an exhaust on the end.. you can imagine how to make this better.
Why when you just make a heat exchanger with some Plumbing fixtures coaxial heat exchanger using iron pipe and just screw it into the the engine exhaust? This is Mickey Mouse

Your quality of content has suffered in the past 10 years.I guess this was a spur of the moment thing, but a few hours to prep would of helped, a lot.or even a voice over of what you were doing would of been better. a simple 3 dollar thermometer showing the temperature of the heated water would of been a lot more convincing , rather than a pop up window telling us what the laser temp meter read. On a side note, this is how they make fresh water on ships

Exhaust system picks up about 7 minutes in.
Great idea but would it be better if the actual exhaust gases were plumbed through some sort of a heat exchanger
