As an adult I got introduced to some of the Anita Baker album tracks that just blew my mind. Anita stomped the hell of my flawed theory in the most delightful way. “You bring me joy” was not released as a single, but after listening to the Rapture album, I pity the person(s) who had to decide on the singles. I know I couldn’t do it. Every song was just equally phenomenal. The album is like flipping through a catalog of masterpieces. Anita isn’t just a great singer or vocalist she’s a great artist. Many singers stick to what works, but with Anita you can see she tries to give you something a bit different each time-paint a different picture. She is an artist not just by craft, but by design. I once closed my eyes and imagined Anita singing “how could an Angel break my heart” by Toni Braxton. Toni’s version is incredible but I feel like Anita’s voice would bring about the tears that never seem to come no matter how vulnerable I allow myself to feel while listening to that song. I’ve been obsessed the idea ever since. With legends passing so frequently these days.
