A must have is a nutrichef Bluetooth thermometer and buy 4 extra probes for a total of 6 probes. I can put 4 Boston butts on mine and I put a probe in each butt and one probe in the center front of the grill. This thermometer has great range and the probe on the center front of grill will alert you of a flameout.this is the answer if you don’t want to stand with the grill.
I appreciate the bread test you performed. I've seen multiple reviews for the mods, but not an illustration showing where the transformation of temps takes place. Knowing this, I'd be fine with this too, it's often nice to be able to shift your items to either a cooler or hotter part of the grill, and knowing where it is ahead of your purchase makes for a more informed buying decision.
I have built stick burners, Pig roasters, reverse flow smokers big enough for 4 full size pork shoulders, 120 lb. whole piggies. Bought a MES a couple of years ago, Love it for smaller cooks and smokes. Pit Boss 700 was on sale locally, just had to buy it. Best cooker that I have ever owned! Use it almost daily instead of my oven. A buddy who eats at my place regularly, also bought one on sale and is in seventh heaven. Said that he made the best pork loins and chicken breasts he has ever had, when not at my house! Just got to learn its quirks and habits, which are not many. Gonna do some Texas beef ribs this weekend!! Happy Smoking and Barbecue!
It always runs the auger for 18 seconds. The p setting adjust how frequently it runs the 18 second cycle on the auger. I found mine smoked at 275 on the default smoke preset of 4
I've had a Pit Boss in my arsenal for a year now and have had great results. I mainly use it for wings, beans and other veg. reverse sear steaks and to finish ribs. Good review.
Best bang for the buck. Got mine in 2020 and still going strong. Spare Ribs, Tri-Tip, chicken wings, Brats/veggies, Italian sausage, beef steak/Pork steak, Burgers, over the flame. Still want to try Brisket and Pulled Pork, but i don’t have a lot of people to cook for.
How high do you have your smoke cap off of your smoke stack. The "P" button is easy to figure out. You take the actual temperature of the grill which can run from 65 and up and let it smoke for a half hour. After a half hour take the cooking temp and subtract that from your actual temp and that will tell you what P4 is. Do the same for P1, P2, P3, P5, P6, and P7. I have not done that completely which i should do if i smoke during the winter i know the temp settings.
@@SmokedMidwestBBQ thanks for the tip on the cap. I've had issues with run away temps with the cap screwed on tight or loose. I have found out though let it heat up for half and hour and your actual temp settles down. The silver temp is so so with mine thought.
I just got one as a gift. It's kind of a something I never expected to own.. real treat. Your bread test sir that is above and beyond. Excellent info for someone using this kit! Solid review.👊
Our XL started messing up around 9 months of use. The igniter would not ignite. What's weird is, I did the wire swap Pit Boss suggested and the fan and the igniter worked. When I connected the wires back like they were supposed to be, the grill didn't work AGAIN. They sent us an igniter but the control board is on backorder. It is sooo frustrating to wait on parts. You can manually start the grill but it is not convenient. I just wonder if I should have spent more money and got a Lonestar Grillz pellet grill.

Could be your pellets. Usually, with a pellet smoker the lower the temp equals more smoker. You could smoke at 200-225 for the first few hours and then bump up the temp to finish.

The lower the "P" setting the hotter it gets. I had my "P" setting on "0" and walked away, came back 2 hours later and it was at 350°. So I ruined my brisket and learned a lesson. I see I'm watching this video 3 years after you made and surely by now you've figured this out
Let’s talk steak! What is a good pellet flavor to use for steaks my wife doesn’t like too much smoke flavor so what is a good mild pellet to use also can I control how much smoke goes in the stove?
I just picked this up today on clearance for $340 and had to buy the display model to get it. Sucker was HEAVY and didn’t fit in the van 😅. Had to run back in and buy a ratchet strap
I bought the Pit boss 700 at Walmart at a great price of 146.00 because they needed the room for the winter stuff. So you showed me where the hot spots are, I always thought the right side would be hotter because the plate lifts upward towards there.
@@brent6454 Believe me I was shocked, I even had to ask a employee if the sign was correct. About 5 700's and 2 Austins were sitting there all assembled and ready to go. The Austins were $299.
I got one that was returned to TSC as not working, of course we fix anything unlike the nerds that take things back for dumb stuff. Actually my son in law bought it for me and fixed it. (just cleaned it) I think he got it for $150. Using it for the first time today. I have a big wood smoker (I built), also a Pit barrel and some Weber charcoal grills, I like them all. I grille quite a bit. They all have their purpose. Drinking Beer makes it more fun....LOL Rock on Dude nice video
Its good to see your grill is way hotter on the right than left too. I thought mine was defective. Im not really happy about it, it makes half the grill unusable. Im curious if other brands have the same problems.
I have the smaller pit boss and to be straight up the test is perfect and the result when cooking certain things on the smoker you will want a cool section like that because what I found was that when simply using it as a grill the area above the fire pot is extremely hot and you will have certain pieces of meat you will just want to keep warm while applying greater heat to others ,and frankly it's not really a defect if you close that baby and your just smoking it's going to get smoked and if you close it and your turned it up to 350 the temp is going to cook it that is what makes these things so awesome steady heat rising heat ,rising flame convection cooking and grilling. I remember my gas grilling days always turning off one burner the other burner just flaming the meat to no end raw in the middle, yuch...this thing if you hit smoke for two hours your going to have a great smoke flavor and then just turn it up for the finish ,oh and my wife perfected the p settings and that's key to hold low Temps and end flameouts
@@wyliegladden6781 I told my wife to call them tomorrow .she's the one that cooks on it .she wanted one ever since they came out and I happened to walk into Walmart at the right time they just marked it down to $318. If she doesn't get it done I'll take care of it when I see her this weekend.
Bought a Pitboss 700, $599 Canadian. Love it. Some people complain you can't get a good smoke ring. I had no problem but you can easily wrap up some wood chips in tinfoil and light with a torch to smolder for extra smoke. The shear convenience of the pellet is awesome. Set it and forget it. Better yet get a bluetooth thermometer and you can sit on your couch and use your phone to figure out the temps. Nice review.
They have held up well! I just brush them off with a grill brush before using it. Nothing fancy, I think the grease from the food keeps them looking good.
Great review. I am from Australia where variety of Pellet smokers not available. I got a 850 Pit boss and I love it. Only issue with the model I have it doesn’t have the pellet drain, but not that much an issue.
P setting is super simple. It determines how often pellets are fed into the fire pot. Want more smoke set it higher. Want less set it lower. It can only be adjusted on the smoke setting. The temp gauge on both the display and barrel are awful! They are very in accurate. Get a thermapen instant read! I own a pit boss combo smoker amd very pleased overall but I have spent the time learning the benefits and limitations! You’re absolutely not gonna get the flavor outta pellets that you do over a stick burner/charcoal smoker but there are some tricks that’ll help. Overall, I can’t complain we cook on ours 3-4 times a week and I’m very happy with it!
Thanks for the tips. I don’t ever use the P setting as I find just setting to the temp much easier. Agreed, smoke flavor can be a little lacking but the pellet grills are so easy to use and maintain. I use mine all the time.
Actually on the Pit Boss pellet grills if you set your grill to 250 degrees the far right-hand side of the cooking chamber will actually be closer to 275... Check it out...
Bought mine 2weeks ago. All assembled, all parts manual...322.00 this very model from Walmart end of season display ...yea buddy 200.oo ...only thing not sure of ,...”P” setting...not sure,
Just make sure you get to know your smoker before the warranty is up. I've had mine for a little over a year now and it's been nothing but a headache. They'll send parts, (I'm waiting on a new control board now) but I hadn't planned to work so much for this company. I appreciate the parts, don't get me wrong, but the amount of time, food and pellets that have been wasted because of misdiagnosed symptoms is truly a shame.
You can lower the P setting while you have it set to 250, P mean pause, and if you lower the P you'll get more heat, raise it you get less heat but more smoke
Actually it's to be a lower P setting gives you a lower temp, but more smoke. According to what I found out in regards to my Austin XL you want to set the P setting in the smoke temperature and then when you turn the actual temperature up the P setting follows. You can't adjust it outside of the Smoke setting, but try it out. It appears to work for me.
Tis tis tis..... CLEAN THAT SMOKER!!!!!!!! Depending on how much you use your smoker you should give the smoker a good cleaning every six months. Do you have a cover for the smoker???? That helps also.
Had mine for 2 yrs Austin xl. You did not point out for new users, or maybe you are unaware: the stainless steel tray on right, where you keep your scraper is a vegetable tray or for anything that might fall thru grates, FYI
Is it worth getting the pit boss pro over the Austin 1100. Both same size the pro has the extra rod to move the tray inside and has a front shelf. From what I see if u know anymore difference or any info that would be very helpful thanks
It really comes down to if you want the shelf in the front and the rod for the searing plate. Also, I’ve heard the pro series has some issues with the grates chipping but that might be fixed by now.
Question about the heat defuser. I would think after many many cooks that it would get clogged with grease and ash and just be a total mess. Do you have to keep brushing it off or washing it ?
I scrape it off with a 2” paint scraper over a trash can to get the chunks off. I then put it back on the smoker and run it at 350 for 30. That cleans it off pretty good. I do this after a couple of cook or after a long messy one like a brisket.
I actually own the xl and the vertical smoker by Pitboss. I love both of them. A bit of advice to anyone looking to buy one, wait until the off season. I actually saved a lot of money that way. I absolutely love the brisket off the smoker and the grill/smoker is king of whole beef plate ribs.
What are your thoughts on the vertical smoker Ragman? I had a New Braunfels vertical wood smoker that I had for years but didn’t have room on the truck for it when we left Colorado and had to leave it behind and is one of my biggest regrets In life buddy and I’ve just never found one since then that I even remotely liked or would hold near as much meat and I saw the pit boss vertical at TSC a few weeks ago and was wondering about how It worked. If I don’t find one I like soon then I’m gonna have one custom built cause I can not and will not go without a smoker much longer!!:
@@1982MCI l can honestly say that I love the capacity of the vertical Pitboss. I wasn't sure at first because I had never owned a pellet smoker. I have an Oklahoma Joe offset that I really like. But, for the price (got a great deal on it) the vertical Pitboss out did itself. I was sold after the first cook I did on it. I smoked a 15 pound brisket (after trimming) and it fit nicely on the rack. It came out amazing. I'm just a home cook, and I don't know a lot about other more expensive models, but this one has me sold. I have the 5 series Pitboss if I didn't mention it. Remember buddy, no smoker left behind. Enjoy the cooks.😀👍🏾
I have the Pit Boss 1100. Temperature control sucks. Huge variations in temp across the grill and over time. Seasoned smokers need consistent temps like you get from charcoal. A new PID controller will help but is really not worth the money. I don't use mine for long smokes. just cooks that are under an hour and don't need consistency.
@@SmokedMidwestBBQ question: Say you wanted a larger surface area at 275, would you say lowering the temp to ~250 would give you that center and right grate area temp of ~275?
Thanks for the video. I think you just helped me make up my mind about getting one. My husband bought me a Pit Boss Pro Series upright smoker for my birthday a couple years ago. I need to replace my regular grill and this looks like it would fit the bill. It would also make smoking in smaller batches (fish or smaller roast) easier. Why save money when the end product is a better grilling experience, right?
How long after you get done cooking do you wait until you put the cover on, I live in the PNW and we get tons of rain so being able to cover quickly is a plus for me, will it hold up to that type of weather
Smoked Midwest BBQ sweet thanks, my wife and I are looking into getting one of these units we currently cook strictly with charcoal and we’d always have to wait a day or 2 before we could cover the grill to make sure the coals were completely out, how would you rate the length of the cord? Is it long enough to get away from the house or the garage, without needing an extension cord?
Tim M. Yeh wife and I bought one about a month ago we have a bbq gazebo thing we bought to help keep it covered and have about a 20’ extension cord wish I could reply a picture of our set up
@@MaineBornRedneck I've got mine on the deck, deck was just built (it's covered, but I also have a cover) I'll be running an outlet for it soon when I run out power for motion lights at deck corners and fans. @@sa1sa624 the Treagers feel lighter weight and flimsy to the Pitboss in my opinion. Plus for same many you get more cooking area. Just go to academy and say home depot and compare just lifting the lid for example. You'll see what i mean

I’d suggest Apple or fruit wood pellets, they are a pretty mild smoke flavor. 👌🏻 ✅
I just picked this up today on clearance for $340 and had to buy the display model to get it. Sucker was HEAVY and didn’t fit in the van 😅. Had to run back in and buy a ratchet strap
Congrats on the new smoker!!
Got mine about 6 months ago... Best money ive ever spent done everything from 18 hr turkeys to corn dogs and frozen pizza.
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I bought the Pit boss 700 at Walmart at a great price of 146.00 because they needed the room for the winter stuff. So you showed me where the hot spots are, I always thought the right side would be hotter because the plate lifts upward towards there.
I plan on doing another video showing the actual temps.
I'm assuming that's $149 USD. F**K. Great deal. My 700 was $599 CAD and that was on-sale!!
@@brent6454 Believe me I was shocked, I even had to ask a employee if the sign was correct. About 5 700's and 2 Austins were sitting there all assembled and ready to go. The Austins were $299.
That’s a steal.
Couldn’t agree more, sounds like we have similar setups. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Its good to see your grill is way hotter on the right than left too. I thought mine was defective. Im not really happy about it, it makes half the grill unusable. Im curious if other brands have the same problems.
Yeah it’s not idea but I make the most of it. Check out my review #2 video, I do an actual temp test.
I had mine 6 months it's broke already.thought the fuse was bad but I guess it needs a controller.
Ya, need to replace the controller. You. Bahahaha
Call pit boss they will make it right.
@@wyliegladden6781 I told my wife to call them tomorrow .she's the one that cooks on it .she wanted one ever since they came out and I happened to walk into Walmart at the right time they just marked it down to $318. If she doesn't get it done I'll take care of it when I see her this weekend.
I’m between this or the classic. The one right b4 it
Tough choice, for sure.
Totally agree! I get a great smoke ring with mine too. Thanks for watching!
Greetings from Berlin! Thanks for your review! I wanted a good smoker & grill so looked for advise from USA 🎉❤
Awesome! Glad you found the video useful ✅ Thanks for watching!
After all those cooks your grates look very good still. Any tips on how or what you use to clean those?
They have held up well! I just brush them off with a grill brush before using it. Nothing fancy, I think the grease from the food keeps them looking good.
Great review. I am from Australia where variety of Pellet smokers not available. I got a 850 Pit boss and I love it. Only issue with the model I have it doesn’t have the pellet drain, but not that much an issue.
Great review thanks oh and the bread test was the awesome!
Thanks for stopping by and watching!
Thank you!!! Very helpful!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👌🏻
I’ve been looking to get a pellet smoker, and just picked this one up yesterday from Walmart for 250 bucks!
They are 497 here at the Walmart I work in :(
That’s a great deal!
What state?
Good ol California
just got the 1100 at closeout at walmart for 298.00
Actually on the Pit Boss pellet grills if you set your grill to 250 degrees the far right-hand side of the cooking chamber will actually be closer to 275... Check it out...
I did a temp test in my review #2 video, I believe the far right was a little hotter than 275 if I recall correctly.
@@SmokedMidwestBBQ Yeah see what I mean... You can control it a little bit with the stack vent...
@@williamriley2528 very true. I just wanted to make the point to new Pit Boss owners the temp it’s 250 from left to right. Thanks for the tip man.
Bought mine 2weeks ago. All assembled, all parts manual...322.00 this very model from Walmart end of season display ...yea buddy 200.oo ...only thing not sure of ,...”P” setting...not sure,
That’s a great price! I don’t mess with the P setting, only use the temp settings.
Smoked Midwest BBQ OK well thank you very much
Real nice job on the video! you helped me make the decision to buy one. They should pay you.
Haha I wish! Glad it helped you. Thanks for watching.
Just picked one up for $250. Can't wait to use it.
That’s a great deal! Congrats on the new smoker!
P setting only works when its on Smoke.
Sounds like you got a bad one. Bummer dude!
You can lower the P setting while you have it set to 250, P mean pause, and if you lower the P you'll get more heat, raise it you get less heat but more smoke
With the Austin XL the P setting only works on the ‘’smoke’ setting. The P setting doesn’t work when it’s set at an actual tempatute.
Hi, how can we contact you for business inquiry?

Thanks for the review. tough to hear you though.
Just bought mine today. Also 500 on sale. Cant wait to use it
You will love it!! Congrats on the purchase. Be sure to subscribe for my future Pit Boss cooks 👌🏻 👍
O just bought one for 175 !!!! Can’t wait to use it for first time !!!!
Nice review, it does seem like a solid cooker from what I’ve heard. Definitely a good deal for 500. Keep on grillin brother and stay safe!
Thanks buddy! Great value for sure. Stay healthy man!
PICKIMAN YOU ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE. Lol.
MeatCranium BBQ AND REVIEW That may be true! I am omniscient!
Tis tis tis..... CLEAN THAT SMOKER!!!!!!!! Depending on how much you use your smoker you should give the smoker a good cleaning every six months. Do you have a cover for the smoker???? That helps also.
I clean the inside often, scrape off the deflector plate and vacuum out the ash. Last time I checked, you don’t cook on the outside of the smoker.
How wide is the grate?
Not 100% sure, but I do know it’s 1000 square inches of cooking space.
They are $449 on sale at wallmart right now
That’s a good price. Thanks for sharing.
$300 at our local Walmart, heading out tomorrow to grab one after watching this review!
FiveontheFly that’s a great deal!
Had mine for 2 yrs Austin xl. You did not point out for new users, or maybe you are unaware: the stainless steel tray on right, where you keep your scraper is a vegetable tray or for anything that might fall thru grates, FYI
I did not know that tray was used for veggies. Thanks for the tip. 👍
You said that it does not have a 275 degree setting , but then you said you set it at 275 degrees which one is it????
Correct, there is no 275 setting. When it’s set at 250, it’s about 275 on the right had side.
Smoked Midwest BBQ it’s also 40,000 btu. Either way any pellet style is 100% better then a non pellet.
Agreed! With the temp set at 350 and the seating plate open, my Austin XL turns into a flame thrower!! Big flames. 🔥
Smoked Midwest BBQ 8” folding shelf brackets on Amazon for under 20.00 works great on the Austin XL
Jim Murphy I need to make that mod! Thanks did the info.
I rarely use mine to sear so I cover the heat shield in aluminum foil then just peel off the burnt on fat when I vacuum out the ashes then recover it.
Good tip!
Great advice. Thanks for sharing and watching!
How is the pitboss Austin XL still holding up?
Still holding up well, not a single issue and I use it all the time. 👌🏻
Awesome review man
Thanks RHCP man!
I buy this pitboss austin today 28 sep 23,in Walmart for $250 plus tax, good deal
Excellent deal 👌 ✅
Great review man. Thanks!
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
@@SmokedMidwestBBQ question: Say you wanted a larger surface area at 275, would you say lowering the temp to ~250 would give you that center and right grate area temp of ~275?
Yeah I’d set the temp at 250. Check out my review #2 video, I took the actual temp from the left, middle and right side.
Thanks!
Totally agree, glad my video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Great review!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
The toast test is ingenious. Picking up one today
Glad you found it helpful ✅
Lol gotta bump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers. I had 50+ cooks on my smoker after 2 months.
It’s one of 5 smokers I have, gotta spread the love.
Great review brother, I have a lil pitboss cooks great, thanks for sharing, stay safe!👍
Thanks man! I think they are hard to beat for the price! Hope you are staying safe and healthy.
Great video. Thx

How long after you get done cooking do you wait until you put the cover on, I live in the PNW and we get tons of rain so being able to cover quickly is a plus for me, will it hold up to that type of weather
I wait until the smoker is cool to the touch. Usually an hour or so after shutting it down.
@@MaineBornRedneck you'll need an extension cord beyond about 2.5 feet
(Fans a must, push grill heat out for one, and it's Texas for 2 lol) make sure that cord is rated for at least 20 amp)
Good review! Austin xl looks like a good choice
It’s a beast for sure!
I just got the same grill and really having trouble with the p settings what p setting is 225
I don’t use the p setting, just set the temp to 225.
P setting is NOT meant for precise temp control. It's for more smoke.
400 or "flame thrower" is what I use for steak. 2.5 to 3 minutes on each side I've got medium rare. Now I'm off to get some steak.
Flame thrower mode will sear them no problem!
Should I get this one or save up a bit more for trager?
I think the Pit Boss is a much better value.
I have a pitboss 700. Love it. First time smoking. First time cooking a brisket. Probably watched 4hours of brisket videos. Came out amazing.
10 or 11lb brisket. 3hrs at 200, 2hrs at 225, 4hrs wrapped at 225. Off at 202. DELICIOUS.
@@sa1sa624 the Treagers feel lighter weight and flimsy to the Pitboss in my opinion. Plus for same many you get more cooking area. Just go to academy and say home depot and compare just lifting the lid for example. You'll see what i mean
Fuck yes it is cooking on mine right now baked potato 225 2 hours then 400 to grill these steaks
At the end of the video I said "Ok Thanks!!!"
Thanks for watching!
first video ive seen from you, just subbed
Thank you!!
It’s a great deal I just bought it for 250 brand new
Nice! Excellent deal.
Great review on this grill I am looking at getting one of these as well. You hit all the points I was looking for about this grill. I have subscribed to your channel hoping to see if you got some good recipes that i can use. Thanks a lot for this review.
Glad you found the video helpful! Stay tuned for more cooks using it!
whats the lowest temp it will go down to? 150 ?
I have smoked some beef jerky at 180, that’s the lowest I have done. It might go lower if you play with the P settings, but then your at risk of a flame out. Thanks for watching. 🍻
Are you in Iowa?
Born and raised in Nebraska, but I live in Arizona now.
Go Hawks!! Jk like the videos
Haha Go Huskers!!
