This British bunker was built over top of an earlier German bunker. This hill is a graveyard to many thousands of men lost both in the tunnels dug under it, and those buried in the five major mine explosions under the hill. My great uncle James of the 7th B.C. Regiment (Canada) was killed here on the last day of the Battle of Mount Sorrell. June 13 1916. He's buried at Railway Dugouts CWG Cemetery a short distance north of the Hill. We have a wee dram of the Macallan on that day every year.
