I also find it little different between the book and video. But recently for upakarma I used another video and brahma yagam is 99% same as this video.
As mentioned by gurus ( kanchi and sringeri) I tried to do this nitya karma without worrying about what is the meaning of all this activities. When we take medicine we donot ask questions. Same applies here as well I suppose.

Namaskaram. I am nsarayansn from dombivli. The tarpanam mantras very clear and useful. Only one doubt, in brahmayagnam those have father can they do pitti tarpanam also or only deva nd rushing tarpanam. Pl tell me for my information. Once again my himble namaskarams.

Namaskaram - I will share what my guru has told me with regards to Brahma Yagnam. This is something that we have to perform as a Nithya karma daily after doing Madhyanikam. This is part of the Pancha (5) Maha Yagnas - which is the way of expressing our gratitude to Devas, Rishis, Pitrus, Bhootas, and fellow human beings (5 in number total) In this karma, we are expressing our gratitude to Devas, Rishis and Pitrus which is also called fulfilling our "Deva-Rishi-Pitru Rinam". Rinam means - debt. In our faith, the term "Pitrus" refers not just to our ancestors in this current birth but also to those ancestors in the millions of previous births we had before. The debt to our ancestors remains until our atma attain moksha. So considering this even though your father in this janma may be alive our debt to the parents in previous janma still exists and hence for Brahma Yagnam "alone" (no other tharpanam), it is okay to perform Pitru tharpanam, even if your father is alive. Also in the Brahma Yagnam, the mantras for Pitrus actually refer to the Pitru Devatas and not referring directly to our named ancestors. The Pitru devatas referred are Soma, Yama, Angirass, Agni, Kavya Vahana and they represent the Pitrus of all our previous janmas. However, you should seek permission from your father before undertaking Pitru Tharpanam in Brahma Yagnam. The reason is, when you do Pitru Tharpanam, you have to wear your Yajnopavita in pracheenaveeti (on the right shoulder across to the left) and most parents don't like to see their son wear a pracheenveeti, when they are alive. So it is perfectly okay, if you only do Deva and Rishi Tharpanam, if your father is not comfortable having you perform the Pitru Tharpanam portion. I hope this clarifies your question. May the almighty bless you with peace and prosperity.
