    They may not be as perfect as modern lenses but many old movie camera lenses from the 40's, 50's and 60's are warm, sharp and full of character. With a modified GoPro camera from Back-Bone you can mount C-Mount lenses from old 8mm and 16mm Bolex cameras! For this video we collected a selection of 1950's D-Mount lenses used on 8mm Bolex movies camera and mounted them to our H9PRO modified Hero9 Black. Using a simple D-Mount adapter you can mount them directly to the camera!
    8mm lenses were designed for a film size slightly smaller than the GoPro sensor, so in some cases they will vignette slightly, or they won't be as sharp at the outer edges. You can crop the footage slightly yo get rid of any vignetting, or use the camera menus to zoom in a little. In this video we didn't crop the footage at all so the edges of some of the shots might not be as crisp. We think that adds to the character of these beautiful lenses.
    Lenses used:
    5.5mm Kern Paillard f1.9 PIZAR (1959)
    6.5mm Soligor Elitar Wide Angle f1.9 (1950’s)
    12.5mm Kern Paillard f2.5 YVAR (1957)
    13mm Kern Paillard f1.8 YVAR (1958) - our favorite!
    25mm SOM Burthiot f2.5 LYTAR + Hyper Cinor (1950’s)
    36mm Kern Paillard f2.8 YVAR (1958)
    38mm Zeika Optics Cine Tele (1955)
    The intro sequence was shot with the 13mm Kern Paillard lens.

      @@rBennich It's all being shot digital (except Spielberg and Nolan) but the lens choice makes the difference. Hollywood routinely use old Panavision and Cooke lenses in digital productions to capture a certain look. While an $80 high megapixel M12 lens will give you superior sharpness throughout the DOF, it doesn't feel natural. Netflix's recent 'Army of the Dead' was recently shot on old 70's Canon dream lenses. Also ,check out 'Dog Shidt' lenses which are very popular for Cinematic work.

      @@photoguru3786 But don't you think someone will be nostalgic about the phone camera lens and how It's got an unattainable quality to it, in say, 50 years, when everything is shot with ubernanotech-lenses, or whatever? I know i sound silly, but I'm making a point. I'm sure the lenses you're talking about are great. But what I'm proposing is that what gives rise to the "natural" feel might have at least something to do with historic placement. Noone thought the well-tempered piano sounded natural when it came out, but nowadays we're debating if a computer can make a virtual piano sound natural enough.

      @@rBennich True enough :) We tend to hold on to what we know and resist changes. We're all so accustomed to watching films at 24 fps which has not changes since the beginning. 24 fps is what we know and reminds us that what we're watching isn't real... could we play films at 48 fps or even 148 fps- absolutely, but we don't. I remember Peter Jackson shooting the Hobbit (to my memory) at ~48 fps and everyone hating the experience. There's valid reasons to shoot 3D at higher frame rates but I still enjoy the 2D experience best. Call me old school lol :)

    • @rBennich
      @rBennich 3 роки тому +1

      @@photoguru3786 I totally get it. I have "truemotion" or whatever it's called on my tv, that fills in the frames to a solid 60fps. It can make "the hateful eight", which i guess was filmed in 24fps look like a soap television program. But if you break it down, the higher the fps count, the more "natural" it should feel, since it's more approximate to reality. But on the other hand, 24 fps is more "natural" in relation to movie history.

    So, do you just set the GoPro H9 to "Superview" to use all of the sensor? Also, how do you calculate the field of view for given combinations? For example, all C-mount do not a throw the same image circle, correct? The image circled may vary from 5 to 22mm depending on the format it was designed for. For a 1/2.3 GoPro sensor, an lens with an image circle of greater than 7.66 mm is required. But if the image circle is a lot larger, wont that effectively create a magnification? One C 25 mm C Mount lens might act like a 25 mm lens, but another might act like a 50 mm lens (as far as field of view is concerned) because of differences in the image circle. Do you have a guide that explains the math so that a user can select the right range of lenses?

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a 2 роки тому

      Further to my question....a lens designed for use with 16 mm vintage film had to cover 12.70mm diagonal...correct? Image circle had to exceed this. But the GoPro sensor diagonal is 7.66mm. So much of the image a 16mm film camera projects will go to waste on a GoPro. This effectively means the image is cropped, and the lens will act like a longer focal length, correct? So a 13mm Kern for 16mm will have a narrower field of view on a GoPro than it would on a Bolex 16mm....correct?

    • @jonclouter2128
      @jonclouter2128 2 роки тому +2

      We don't recommend the use of Superview on our modified cameras as it takes the full 4:3 aspect ratio of the image sensor and squashes it down to 16:9 resulting in distortion. It's better to shoot in 'wide' fov using either the 16:9 aspect ratio or the full sensor in 4:3 mode. It's true that the GoPro sensor has a 7.66mm diagonal image sensor which in essence means your lens format should produce an image circle at least that size otherwise it will 'vignette' causing dark corners etc. 8mm D-Mount lenses as an example are designed for film that's actually smaller in size with a diagonal of roughly 6mm. That being said most D-Mount lenses will cover the GoPro sensor completely. As a general rule with C-Mount lenses, ones with a wide field of view will have a smaller 'tight' image circle and longer focal length lenses will have larger image circles. That being said a 25mm lens (as an example) of any format will still produce the same field of view on the GoPro. A 25mm C-Mount lens will have the same fov on the GoPro as a 25mm Nikon F-Mount lens even though they have different image circle sizes.

    Hello, has the flange distance changed so it is d mout compatible? What if I bought a regular c mount conversion backbone gopro, and I assume that if I do a d to c adapting, and put it on the camera, it won't be in focus? thank you!

    • @BACKBONEca
      @BACKBONEca  8 місяців тому

      All of our modified GoPro cameras are both CS-Mount and C-Mount compatible. CS-Mount has a flange distance 5mm shorter than that of C-Mount. A 5mm spacer ring is included to make the camera C-Mount and when removed it is CS-Mount. A D-Mount lens (with adapter) would be used with the CS-Mount on the camera so that the lens can go in far enough to focus properly. To use C-Mount lenses (like 16mm Bolex) you would just need to add the included 5mm spacer.

      The short answer is that other lens types can't be used on an unmodified GoPro camera. C-mount lenses like the two you mentioned will require that the original GoPro lens is first removed and the proper lens mounts fitted at the correct distance from the sensor. We sell pre-modified cameras that are ready to go, or you can send in a compatible camera you already own. Details about that here: www.back-bone.ca/installation/

    • @BACKBONEca
      @BACKBONEca  Рік тому +5

      We typically recommend using the camera's 'wide' mode at all times to make full use of the image sensor area for the cleanest video. Linear modes should only be used with fisheye lenses. We also recommend enabling the 10-bit color, increasing the bitrate to high. We also typically use native white balance and flat color so there's more freedom to grade the footage. We also use GoPro labs firmware to increase the bitrate even higher and customize some other settings such as skipping the menus when attaching an HDMI monitor to go straight to the live feed. Almost all of the lenses listed on our website work very will with the H11PRO. Any CS-Mount or C-Mount lens will work, and all of the M12's on our site will work with the exception of the 3.65mm (due to it's physical shape it won't fit). The camera also comes with an MFT mount for manual lenses. Recommended lenses depend on how you use the camera, but typically speaking we use the following lenses the most: 4.35mm or 5.4mm M12 for general 'run and gun' shooting, 8mm C-Mount for cinematic medium/wide and 16mm or 25mm C-Mounts for closeups with blurred backgrounds. We also offer some ultrawide circular fisheye M12's that work very will with GoPro's 'MAX' lens mode as well as linear / horizon leveling modes.

    • @BACKBONEca
      @BACKBONEca  Рік тому +1

      The slight blur on the edges in some cases is just bokeh effect, but in a few cases stems from the fact that D-Mount lenses were designed for 8mm film, the exposed area of which is slightly smaller than that of the GoPro sensor - so the edges with these particular lenses can be a bit soft, especially with wide angle glass. Modern C-Mount lenses or vintage 16mm Bolex lenses are always sharp edge to edge. If soft edges are present from a D-Mount lens you can often use the zoom slider on the camera screen to punch in a little bit, or crop in post especially if shooting at 5.3K which can't be displayed on most TVs. Here we have elected to show the full sensor area.
