You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
F*ck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why
It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you
Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why
Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you

Judith was Maynard James Keenan's mother's name. She was a very religious person. One day she had a stroke that left her in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. This stroke only strengthened her belief in God - something that Maynard found to be pretty ironic. The lyrics in this song reflect how he felt about the whole situation - "It's not like you killed someone, It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side, You praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed." He's saying that his mother was a good person who believed in God and yet this is how she was "thanked."
all these years I've been listening to this and I had no idea of the story behind it. thanks for sharing.
+Aeris Syrius I'm a witch myself which views divinity very differently but all I ever felt from the judo-christian faith was apathy, words upon deaf ears.
And then he wrote Wings for Marie
+Aeris Syrius You are absolutely correct. But, for me, concerning this song in particular, I found it to specifically be the exact polar opposite of Judith. Hence me considering it a "And then he wrote..." type of situation.
LOL, Witch.
My mother is going through cancer and listening to this song is so meaningful rn. She sees the cancer as a "test"...funny how those struggling can feel so strongly about the purpose of their disease but those watching can only feel anger and helplessness. I let her have her comfort in her faith but it brings me none.
That's the difference faith can make in a person's life. Too bad you don't know for yourself...the day is coming soon when you'll wish you did.
Sounds insanely admirable. If it is true and 'necessary'

MJK speaks for all us who've dealt with toxic religion's... MJK helped me, I'm a norse pagan now, but up til I was 16 I was in a horrible jehovah's witness church with a pastor who a*us3ed me and others.. I prayed evey day for jesus to save me, for him to help me... he never did he neve came so I became atheist for a while until I was 19 and discovered the old Gods, I work with Odin and Freya and guess what they showed up so I believe in them over Jesus any day. Thank you to MJK and Perfect Circle, Tool they all helped me when I was lost and I've been a huge fan ever since
This is my opinion if you believe in Jesus, I have only love for you but this is my personal experience. Maynard has played a huge part of my healing journey, and for that he is a part if my soul
this song is so beautiful. he expresses his hate for the situation his mom was in and his anger towards god for it. but then it also shows his mom's love for god. and how that situation made her love god more. reallllly deep stuff here. i wish more people wrote like this these days
I Agree! Maynard's choice of words is always so powerful, dirty but beautiful. In this song right from the start: You are such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose te be. Wow! Love it !
Everyone’s praising Maynard, but can we take a minute or two to praise Billy Howerdel’s guitar playing here?
And Josh Freese' drumming. Really every part of this song is perfect, and meshes together perfectly. In my opinion, it's the best song off this album and one of APC's best in general.
THIS
Mason Minor thank you.
Billie is the true star in this band..maynard is legendary with this band but billie is the mastermind! Maynard even told people's that apc is billies band!!
The origin of Maynard is Green Jello. Google that sometime child...
good song to play on Christmas
Yep
+Kyle West Tried that. Didn't get many positive reactions.
Every year. And I am a Christian, Play it right after the Jethro Tull Christmas song, and the Cheech and Chong one. (little MORE for santa!!! ;) )
Thanks, I'm going to do that now.
Agreed, as it speaks specifically of the faithful and the faithless it's a perfect celebration song.
You do realize this song ties into 10,000 Days and Wings For Marie on the Tool album 10,000 Days? His mom's name was Judith Marie, who was left wheelchair-bound after suffering a stroke. She died 27 years (~10,000 days) later. Awesome song.
Nah, none of us knew that. Wow, so inspiring
Jimmy, The Patient, Judith, Wings pt 1 and 2.
@@1freakgamer lets not forget the final blow, horizons. Which is a fucking beautiful song, like the rest.
I'm also christian and I have no problem with this song ;) it's AWESOME!!!
This song has almost become a part of my soul. Seriously. Its slow, badass pace, its spiteful and angry lyrics, its raging vocals, its liberatingly sacrilegeous theme, everything about it fits so well within my psyche.
Beyond Maynard's blasphemous message to his mother, it showed me the way out of a depressingly doomed one-way relationship which was only perpetuated in my mind because I sacralized it and the loved person. It also made me to question my beliefs and reject the ones which I knew were hurting me. I've never believed in a God that would get angry at something as petty as blasphemy, so of course I agreed with the meaning of the song on the surface. But beyond that, it's also a message for people to question anything they might blindly believe that might be hurting them.
Maynard understands something very fundamental about music, art, life, and sex: its way better if it ends in a climax.
@@mikerusso703 bru
Maynard James Keegan is truly a musically enlightened Genius! 👍😉👍😉
We had to put the climax where we wanted it, for our own personal masterbation
This song is so dimensional on many levels and it can be interpreted in so many ways. Thank You A Perfect Circle.
I know every time I listen to this song I can’t help to think on how a mother is teaching ...
She’s teaching her son that no matter what you think I’m going through someone ( Jesus ) )went through much worse ...
A mother teaching how to love under any circumstance... best of times to the worst of times ... feeling great or in pain ...
Love and lessons from a mom to her son ...
This song is so powerful. When he sings "It's not like you killed someone" I know I'm alive.
Same. Against my will. If there is a "god" he's a cruel mfkr
Some 17 years later and this song hits me just as hard. It took a while to understand what Maynard was singing about. Knowing the meaning of how this song was written makes it a million times better now.
You can feel his anger, it is heartbreaking.
It's awesome to be able to see the evolution Maynard has made with his spirituality. Going from Judith and Opiate to albums like Lateralus and 10,000 Days which are bathed in piousness. He is truly an inspiring human being and has changed my life forever! he inhales creativity and exhales art!
My god, the vocalist (I forgot his name) is very talented. The way he holds the notes, and when he went from screaming to singing again, man. My father told me that he's one of the best singers in our generation. Long live the vocalist of APC (or, a Perfect Circle).
Dude why did you call me a tool? D:
h1mike2 Ohhh... Now I feel like a fool. But, thanks for the info!
Pet, Judith, Weak and Powerless, Sober, Schism, 46&2, H, Stinkfist, Prison Sex, Parabola, Vicarious, The Pot, The Grudge, Lateralus, Eulogy, Intolerance, Bottom, there's just too many good songs to count.
Although I did not like his performance on Chains' 'Man In The Box'. Really glad that they went with William DuVall instead of Sebastian Bach or Maynard James Keenan. 'Cause they almost went with Maynard or Sebastian.

Alma Reza Oh god it rhymes!
i'm freshly 15 (my birthday was yesterday) and my mom introduced this song to me fairly recently. my mom says she would play this cd in her car over and over again for this song and now 20 years later, i play this song on my phone over and over again. it's literally addicting. good music is still good even decades later.
Saw this live in 1999 when APC toured with NIN. Definitely one of the best concerts I've ever gone to and definitely an awesome first concert to go to as a 17 year old!
psilicybin666 some girl is saying that she was raped by Maynard at that concert now😒 smh
Ha! Awesome!! That tour was called Fragility I think. I went to the Madison Square Garden show where APC opened for NIN with guest star Marilyn Manson. Was my 1st concert too at the age of 16!
I'm so incredibly envious that you got to see them both live in one show. I missed chances to see them separately this year.

The song is about questioning his mother's choice to follow god. She had a stroke and became paralyzed, and it strengthened her belief in god. Manyard found this very ironic: she was a good person who believed in god, and this was how god thanked her.
"It's not like you killed someone, it's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side, Praise the one who left broken down and paralyzed. He did it all for you."
I don't believe his goal is to bash god, but is rather to ask others "why?"
It’s bit of both bashing god but asking why do people still like god when he see god messing up their lives despite doing good things in their lives?
For years I never knew that this song was about his mother's faith in God n how she was repaid with suffering, like many others who commented I don't believe he was bashing God or Jesus but just wanted to know why Christ nor God helped save his mother, very powerful
This track is sick. Instrumentals and vocals, perfection. That is all
Regardless or religious affiliation, it's a very catchy song. it'll be ok everyone
Fuck their lord and their christ (who did this to her). 10,000 days in the fire is long enough. Fuck the god that would do this to a person.

for those who mock this you should understand what this song is about. my mother has cancer and is probably going to lose. its her second fight. this song is saturated with frustration and helplessness. think before you mock.
+John Chester I know what you mean. My mom had kidney disease and slowly melted away from the dialysis until she was 48. I'd say it gets easier with time, but it doesn't.

i've been looking for this song 6 years i remember hearing it on the am 570 sports radio couldnt really figure out who the artist was, Now finally got it after all these years i can listen to this all day!!!!
MISSION FUCKING ACCOMPLISHED
ESPN?
Even though i believe in God i can relate to this song on so many levels. I grew up very religious but now I'm not I just happen to believe in God. But I've gone through emotions like this and still do, I normally don't like talking about it but sometimes you have to.
***** FUCK YOUR GOD!
CUTE LOL
Of my own accord I believe in God now because of what I've been through, not because I was unconsciously conditioned that way. because i wasn't.
As to whether or not God exists?? lol, my personal experience will not suffice to be any evidence to you, not do I care for it to be, I accept peoples beliefs whether they believe in God or not.
I can't prove to you that I am in my uncles house right now but i'm pretty sure that I am. I can offer proof but you can doubt it if you want, if it doesn't fit your subjective standard.
I will believe what I believe with or without your approval based upon my experiences in life, none of which you are a part of.
This is one of those songs, where you're scared to scroll down because you know what terrors await

I feel you homie
I enjoy this track so so much... even when it's hard for me to relate to the way he blames his mama's God for what she has gone through, but I think his words come from pain, that's how he deals with it- Nothing but love for MJK! Full respect to Judith Marie who kept her faith in this life full of suffering till she got her wings
It’s more or less about asking why did god do this to a good person when she never did anything sinful at that time.
71 people continue to pray after losing everything that ever mattered to them.
this song it is like a lament to breaks my selfs and tears and his voice is a powerful and the guitarrs sounds is allucinatory
Thank you Maynard, I now understand the message you were trying to get across in this song
The way I see it, his mother suffered, he suffered, and the Universe turned in our favor, giving us beautiful music and Maynard the inspiration and drive that you couldn't get anywhere else. Sacrifice, yes, but look where it got him in his life.
You don't need soft-hearted religion, sometimes you just have to interpret your own perspective.
Amen they have been blessed
Truth!!!
Without pain, without sacrifice... we would have nothing.
First time listening to Perfect Circle¬iced Maynard voice instantly! I❤TOOL! And I will ❤Perfect Circle from now on sure!
Although I'm religious, I somehow love this song. Also, that sustained note starting at 3:12 just gave me the chills!
The whole album is a story of hate and repent towards God. Gotta listen to the whole thing to understand, this song is dedicated to his mother, and this is how he felt since her mother was very religious... You can listen to the track Thomas :) will like it too!
cpsyman Maynard must realize that his mother is in a better place. Just saying :)
Yeah, he does. Later on the album. I tell you, it's just people only look at a certain thing, instead of analyzing as a whole... And they can't really understand this song because of the same! I'm also very religious, and this song represents every moment you feel like things are going wrong. Well i'll just leave it there :A
***** No, my dearest friend. I mean Heaven, which is above us.
yeah....I wrote a poem here but I deleted it.
Keep your religion (nor anti-religion beliefs) to yourself and keep listening to good music ;) Hail Maynard !
were we created? is the most philosophically important question there is, regardless of extraneous dogmatic religious bullshit.
This song is literally about anti religious "beliefs", fucking idiot.
heard this song live, maynard still hits those notes like a god
I love how he says he did it all "for" you, not "to" you. Implying that even though the story is always God/Jesus sacrificing for the people.. us, the "sinners", what are we really getting, if in this life, we're ultimately left destitute anyway? Question "why?". Always.
Everytime I want to end my on life do to drug addiction feeling worthless like I can never measure up to preconceived notions it makes me feel the exact same way of desolation. God Bless You Maynard.
Love starting my day blasting this in morning traffic.
"It's not like you killed someone... It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side."
MAYBE I DID. YOU DON'T KNOW ME MAYNARD.
Seras Victoria Oh hi Police Girl.
I’m pretty sure you didn’t kill Jesus because he was talking about Jesus
You're so smart Stephanie
@Jonathan Boutilier he says hateful as well
This song is about his mom's faith though....
That is exactly what I needed to kickstart my week.
faith can be had in something ethereal as religion holds up to be praised or it can be held in yourself as a sense of self worth and a drive to accomplish the absolute utmost you can in the short time we have on this planet. heck faith can even be held in your fellow man, when i served as a soldier i had faith in the men and women to my left and right that served along side me knowing that whatever may come we would be there for each other.
well, i like to believe that a true artist's work reflects what he feels during the time he creates a piece of art, and even though it is questioning and infuriating a religion his mother believed in, you could also try to see things from his perspective, and like you said, he redeemed himself a bit with those songs.
He's human, he feels anger, he vents, he calms down.
Wrong
I understand what Maynard is saying here and I can understand his anger, but I can't help but have a lot of respect for his mother. She kept her faith even while enduring such pain. That's true devotion right there.
Faith is not a virtue and should afford no respect.
Why, I may ask? Not antagonizing, just curious.
GPMM213 Faith is believing without evidence and that's also how to describe a gullible sucker.
Skepticism is a virtue because it allows us to protect ourselves from those that would cheat us, faith on the other hand...well, just look at the Vatican.
***** I can see your point and I agree with it to an extent, but at the same time I disagree. While yes, believing in something without questioning it is foolish and potentially dangerous, I still think faith is rather admirable. Faith can give people greater meaning in their lives and allow them to be better. I don't know how to describe it, but it's not something to be scoffed at. I suppose both need to exist to balance each other out.
I was just saying, in regards to Maynard's mother, she had every right to live in misery and give up on life, but she didn't. She could have hated the world and everything in it, but she didn't. Instead, she overcame that and found greater strength and meaning in it. I don't know, but I find that pretty commendable. Not sure if I could do the same thing as she did.
Blaze Buscus Did you read one word from that argument between him and the other?
I've always held this song close to me... My mum just lost a long and courageous battle with Ovarian cancer in January. She was devoted til the end. She didn't fear death because of her belief in Heaven. I don't know how to feel.
Song means even more now 💔
The guitarist gives me goosebumps 😬
The Greek philosopher Epicurus (342-271 BCE) claimed that the existence of God proved there is no God. He claimed that if God cannot stop evil then he is not all-powerful (omnipotent). He then argued that if God can prevent evil but does not, then God is not good.
If you don't get chills at 3:12 something is wrong with you...
No chills
Ain't nothing wrong with me. Every fucking time.
I am soooooo 🤐 tired dearest love. So what I'd like to do to accommodate you yourself
There is something wrong with me whether I get chills or not..

"Oh so many ways for me to show you

Nothing else to say....
You can say the exact opposite as well.
strength drawn from hatred soon expires, strength drawn from love persists eternal
Is that from the same god that creates some specifically for the garbage according to Romans 9?
Same God who created hell?
Timothy Sweeney
Same God that demanded that his followers not wear clothing made of 2 different kinds of fabric woven together? (No, really. I'm dead serious. Look up Leviticus 19:19)
Strength drawn from hatred towards those who hurt your loved ones grant a power like none other
Why are you here then? I am a Christian and I can appreciate this song because, inadvertently, it is a testament to the faith of his mom. She held to her beliefs no matter how much she suffered or what anybody told her. This song is full of her son's pure, honest emotion..he didn't understand why she chose to continue following God and why He allowed her to suffer. And now millions of people know about this woman's unwavering faith in Christ through this song.
it's a testament to a misguided woman who spent her life waiting for a savior who didn't, nor won't, come. She watched too many disney movies....waiting for prince to come and save her. She never knew that everything she needed to have peace was already inside of her. She was always looking externally for fulfillment. The thing that is off in this song is that he says that her God "did this to her." I guess he's speaking as if God exists in her mind and he, God, did this to her; because if he doesn't exist (outside of ourselves), then there is no "he" to have done anything to anyone.
The total composition of this song shows the genius of the band; the lyric, the rifts...everything. Perfection.
Its sad that a great song with a real painful and human meaning it has so many comments with assholes bashing about the lyrics or other peoples beliefs :/
This is my ringtone!
Sounds like hes struggling with his faith cause his mothers is so strong that even being paralyzed it can't be broken. Judith is an epitaph of strength. I pray if I ever break my faith would remain as strong as hers.
I was raised as a Theravada Buddhist, but being from the U.S., (some) people believe in God & therefore I've adapt to the religions. I like this song because I get real mad & I'm hopeless sometimes.
This song fuckin rocks!
favorite song ever.
❤❤❤❤ PAZ HAS SOME GREAT RHYTHM
This song reminds me of my mother who suffered from three strokes and couldn’t move, was in a skilled nursing home at the age of 62 and had a feeding tube but still prayed to her “savior aka Jesus Fucking Christ “. She passed away a few weeks ago and this song reminds me of her - every word
People in the comment section here are pretty oblivious to the song meaning. Judith is Maynard's mother. She was extreme religious, something Maynard never understood. Judith spent 28 years in a coma. In days, this is around 10.000 days. This song is about Maynard's anger, how could she believe in someone (something) that abandoned her this way? ("Fuck your god", "he did it all for you"). 10.000 days from his other band, Tool, is about his accepting of his mother's passing. She let her go "home", to heaven.
it wasnt 28 years in a coma his mother sufferd from a brain aryarizm
Exactly! I interpret this song as asking two questions:
Why, after everything that happened, did she keep her faith in a god that would do that to her?
What the hell did she ever do to deserve what she got?
I think it's a pretty healthy exploration/expression of his anger and grief.
apologetics game is weak.
Well fuck you for making me feel something today
Another question to ask is why he'd release a diss track aimed at his dying mom. He's an asshole for this.
Maynard's mom was a true follower of Christ. A faithful woman indeed. Maybe one day, Maynard will understand that Jesus DID do it all for us, not to save the body, but to save the soul and his mom understood this completely. Praise Jesus.
Love them. Never gets old!💜

The song is mostly a letter of sorts to the Maynard's (the vocalist's) mother, who clinged to God despite all the terrible things that happened to her (up to her death from a stroke, I believe).
Understandably, this could leave someone angry and confused. I think Maynard tried to translate as much disappointment and anger as possible, and to me, it certainly worked.
Glad I found this song.
An important part of being a Christian today is understanding that you don't need to agree with people to appreciate them or their crafts. Some of the most important spiritual truths I've discovered were from listening to explicitly anti-Christian rap. If what you believe is so true to you, you should never be offended by someone with differing beliefs thinking you're wrong.
Real truth doesn't need to be defended like that.
Awesome Power rock Song !!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of religious comments on here.. That's cool. But the problem MOST of you have is that when someone speaks their beliefs and you don't agree with them you start bashing and refuse to have a civilized conversation about it. Nothing wrong with having faith and believing in something, but just because someone doesn't share the same views or philosophies doesn't mean they don't matter or their opinions have lesser value. I'm not sure what I believe in any more. Would an afterlife be nice? Sure, I guess. Doesn't mean there is one. What we should actually be discussing, rather than what we believe in, was religion created as a mere tool to divide people based on their beliefs so as to limit our potential in this world?
the problems occur when ones beliefs in some book of magical thinking or mythical voice in the sky become the basis for legislation and culture.
You are right it does not mean they do not matter. BUT, some opinions are of less value that others. I also don't go the religous vids and talk bunch of shit... so they are getting what they deserve.
And when people think we came from a rock?
I think that is all human race tbh. Not just religious people. Liberals, Conservatives, Atheists, Muslims etc..everyone thinks they are right and want to push it on others. All sides think the other side is evil etc. But in the end, it's all hypocritical.
Yes
Who’s listening in 2019? 👋
Me
Being a Christian and loving this song is such a difficult thing 😂😭😭😭
I feel the same way about Nine Inch Nails "Heresy"
As you say, this song is about one man's view of the Christian God, and while I would never try to tell anyone what they should believe I do hope this song sinks deep questions in the listener's mind as to why this God, which is supposedly all-powerful, all-knowing and loves us all implicitly, would permit the horrors we see in the world. Of course good things exist too, but nowhere near enough to counterbalance the terrible suffering that afflicts us and the animals around us.
[Introducción]
Eres una gran inspiración para las formas
Que nunca, nunca elegiré ser
[Post-Coro]
Oh, tantas maneras para mostrarte
Como te ha abandonado tu salvador
[Verso 1]
[Post-Coro]
Oh, tantas maneras para mostrarte
Como tu dogma te ha abandonado
[Verso 2]
Ruega a tu Cristo, a tu Dios
Nunca pruebes la fruta
Nunca te desvíes, nunca te rompas nunca
¡Atragantarse con una mentira!
A pesar de que él es el que te hizo esto
Nunca pensé en preguntar por qué
[Coro]
i found it...i finally fucking found it
Maynard, a man not just of words, but screams
Yes that's what the song is about. I definitely agree with you.
