Burton is in the top 5 of my greatest vocalists of the rock era
To say Burton can sing is an understatement. It was jazzy from the beginning.
Actually Harri, not jazzed up, sounds very much like the 69 original. Guess Who had their own distinct sound.
Yes. This is very close to the original. You can tell they're not lip synching it from a few small changes -- which authenticates it.
Yup!
So true!
facts. That's basically how the OG sounds.
Randy actually had some ‘jazz lyrics’ he didn’t know what to do with and Burton heard a line from a Bob Dylan song that went ‘she’s come undone’ and he wrote the words.
The fact this band is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is unbelievable, but also shows what's happened to the nomination process, especially when artists less talented have already made the voting list.
My favorite Canadian band of all time.
Best Rock band of all time, best lead vocalist of all time! Thanks for appreciating this Canadian treasure!
Oh Yeah Burton Cummings had that great voice and a great jazzy piece of music to accompany.
He definitely can sing, and he’s a multi instrumentalist
So much talent!
Burton used to play the saxophone when he was in The Deverons.
I didn’t think this could be as good as the record. Boy was I wrong. This was excellent! Great choice! ❤️❤️❤️
Harri, thank you so much for reacting to the Guess Who and Burton Cummings. He has an unbelievable voice. Have seen him and Randy Bachman in concerts. Burton still sounds exactly the same. Love this guy. 😊👏🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Lucky to see them both. They mainly do concerts in Canada now.
@@jeanettesmith765 Yes. We had tickets to see Bachman-Cummings together but the concert was cancelled due to Covid. Hope we can get to see them together soon. Both are icons.
Thanks for the Burton Cummings. You should check him out solo doing "Stand Tall"
" when he held that note from Monday to Wednesday" one of the best reactions to this song ever!
I was raised listening to The Guess Who. I absolutely love them. Don't stop here, because I don't think they have a bad song. Just fabulous!
Running Back to Saskatoon, you can't go wrong with the Guess Who.
I enjoy watching and listening to music with you. Your wit and humor make me laugh.
These guys were terrific, so many hits, should be in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Canada's finest band.
Burton sure can sing!
Mr Burton Cummings, a Canadian icon.. One of the best voices in the music industry...Loooove him!
I believe, he and Joni Mitchell are Canada's King & Queen of blue-eyed soul, Folk, and R&B music rock stars🎶 they are definitely two of my favorites.
Agree 100%!
You need to react to his “Stand Tall” to really appreciate his vocal talents.
This is from the 60s! I was there and remember! One of my most favorite bands! There is a cover band now but I'm not interested. And, this is not "jazzed up." This is the way they wrote and recorded it. Love your reactions! Kathy P.
I grew up with this great Canadian band. They had so many hits such as "Laughing", "Star Baby", "Albert Flasher", "Bus Rider", "Rain Dance", "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", "These Eyes", "Follow Your Daughter Home" etc. Burton Cummings has a great voice. One of the best out there. Randy Bachman later left to form (BTO) Bachman Turner Overdrive & had many hits. And Burton Cummings had a great solo career with lots of great songs.
Hi Dagmar
Great list! Don't forget The Guess Who also sang "Clap for the Wolfman (1974)". You gon' dig him 'til the day you die!
@@jamestaylor2920 Yes that is a fun song.
Hang on to Your Life as well....such an impressive list of great songs
The fact that they NEVER won a Grammy award or been induced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a travesty. Honorable mention to Anne Murray too. Overlooked and under appreciated in the U.S. Take care and stay well everyone.
1969…and it sounded exactly like that.
Venus, by Shocking Blue was also 1969.
Yeah, the studio version from '69 was something A.M. radio was not use to hearing back then.
But you're right, Mr. Cummings was a singer extraordinaire.
Burton still sounds great.
This still sounds great even after all of these years. I was fifteen when this was on the charts and I never saw a live performance until now. Wonderful choice and reaction. 🌺✌️
Hands down.
Best rock vocalist ever.
The midnight special version of this song is incredible.
Splendid! Burton is AMAZING!
Love our Burton here in Canada. his solo career great too. Stand Tall a great one with him on piano.
Great song!
I hear elements of jazz....and the incredible voice of Burton. OH, CANADA!!!!!!
My hometown boys ❤️🇨🇦 This song is being played like it was first recorded in 1969. Randy Bachman the guitarist lived on the same street as Lenny Breau who was a premiere jazz guitarist and influenced the band. Burton Cummings is the lead vocalist and has a set of pipes that even Robert Plant remarked on. Along with the flute Burton plays the piano. I think you have reacted to them before. The Guess Who were the ones that wrote and sang American Woman. If you want to hear Burton really go on Blues please check out Humpty's Blues by them.
Cheers
Lenny Breau was amazing, he used to jam with my ex and my brother.
I grew up in the 60's in the Great White North and the Guess Who were our pride and joy. So many great hits, so much talent. These guys made every young Canadian walk a little taller and smile from ear to ear. I still remember how inconsolable I was in '70 when Randy Bachman said goodbye. For me, it was the day the music died.
@@Cynthia... That is so cool that you got to hear Lenny Breau live. Also, your ex and your brother must have been doing alright musically if they jammed with Breau. Lenny Breau had a major influence on Randy Bachman and I believe that Randy was involved in the CD compilation of Lenny Breau's playing called "Wonder Boy".
@@bluebird1239 Yes they were all pretty good Lenny was the best of course. We met him in Yorkville along with so many other people. I have some of Lenny’s music in my playlist on my UA-cam page.
I grew up in the north end as well button went to school with one of my brothers
The Guess Who were always incredible! You need more Guess Who in your life.
"Stand Tall," a solo song for Burton Cummings in the 70s, showcases his voice well.
For me it is Burton's powerful voice and Bachman's use of tasty jazz chords that lift this song beyond others.
Randy Bachman, the guitarist, said one day on a whim Cummings picked up a flute at a music store, and the next day he had worked it into their live act. Cummings was truly amazing.
Harri when the Guess Who recorded this in 1969 it was the very first time Burton had played a flute. Just prior, when visiting a music store he was told flutes used similar fingering to saxophones. He had played sax in high school band so he bought the flute just to see if he could play it. The rest is music history.

Burton Cummings is so talented. The flute in this is killer. What a great part of my growing up. Love the Guess Who.
Great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Mary👍 i havent heard "Glamour Boy" in years.
@@kennethrussell1158 I love Burton's voice in this song.👍✌️🇨🇦
I’ve seen him many times and was lucky enough to meet him in a Winnipeg lounge. Very talented man! 🇨🇦
He's still singing it now. It sounds pretty much the same as it did on the recording. Burton Cummings is one of the most underrated powerhouse voices in rock history. Those who know what he does stay loyal for life. Those who don't... they will stay loyal for life if they get a little taste of it.
I’m sure by now you have heard the 1969 version of that song. Sounds the same. Awesome tune.
I like your channel because your voice is soft and you don't yell in excitement. And I like your reviews. Thank you.
Great set of pipes on him...these guys were a favorite in my crowd!
This was " jazzy " in 1969 -- it was always jazzy . 🎶
Burton is a real star. If you have not heard him playing the piano singing "Stand Tall", you are going to love it.
This has always been my favorite Guess Who song. TY Harri for reacting to it.
One of the greatest Canadian bands , Randy is a world class slinger .
He really shows off his voice in the song Stand Tall.
It sounds the same as it did in the sixties.
Excellent! 'Nough said!!!
So refreshing to listen to the music 🎶 I grew up with, enjoy.
This sounds EXACTLY like the original. Burton and Randy Bachman wrote so many great songs. Note that I heard and interview with Burton that flute fingering was the same as sax (which he knew) so he picked up a flute and taught himself.
They were a great band. One of the bands that paved the way for the 70's bands.
Great choice, Harri. There are a trove of great Guess Who songs to explore, but a couple I think you'd really enjoy are Follow Your Daughter Home and Hang on to Your Life. Cheers from Alberta, mate.
It sounds pretty much how I remember the original sounding in 1969. and the song still sounds really good today in 2022. thats what makes it a classic.
Burton was and is one of the best vocalists out there. I waited 25 years to hear him because of a messed up schedule when I went on a senior class trip. It was worth the wait, but I sure would have loved to have seen both shows!!
Oh yes he can! Not to mention his astounding keyboard skills. You absolutely have to check out My Own Way To Rock (one of his solo hits) from that same show in '83.
Should see him play piano!
The Guess Who is one reason The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was created.
It was 1969. Sounded just like this. Double sided #1 hit here in Canada 🇨🇦 Laughing and Undun on the B side of the 45.❤
The song was written by the guitarist Randy Bachman, who aside from rock loved playing blues and jazz. This version is basically the same. I played bass in a Guess Who tribute band in the late 1980s. This was always one of the more fun ones because of the cool bass line.
They had several hits a long time ago. One of the best early groups.
Another great Canadian band.🇨🇦
It sounded just like that in the 60’s
This was done in 69 and it sounds just like that. Burton Cummings voice is still magnificent. You must play Albert Flasher and Stand Tall
I really love their early stuff, band out of canada. But by the time Burton Cummings took over as lead vocalist, that's when this band exploded. So no they didn't rework it at all. Definitely go check out the studio cut of this. It's slightly longer than the single cut but it's all the same and the live performance here is surprisingly close. It's right around the same time I believe. They were just so good. As a guy that appreciates jazz, I sincerely wish you would go listen to their hit, and they had a whole bunch of hits, but I really love everything about his voice and the musicianship and the arrangement of green-eyed lady.
Oh yeah, and you are thinking of that Dutch band called Shocking Blue I think, with she's got it. I love that so much, of course I heard it when I was a little kid but back then we didn't really have any visuals to go with it it was just the radio or the record. It was only about 5 years ago that I started seeing this old footage of them from back in the day and even then I have a crush on her to this day, laugh.
Venus
@@richardbyrd2581 Yes!
Ahh What, really What, where are you getting your info, really,im blown away by your lack of knowledge. This band was started by Randy Bachman,Burton was there from the start, got it,GOOD.Then Randy left and started BTO,where you got when Burton joined they took off😝😝😝😝 is amazing, yeah im Canadian, but you made my day with that statement.
@@squirrel2000 oh man you are totally right. I love both of them so much at the same time and I was very young but I've listened to them a lot older but yeah there's really two of those Sugarloaf songs, that one and the kind of Beatles parody jab at the record industry at the time don't call us we'll call you. But somehow his voice does remind me of Burton cummings. But my high school sweetheart, her mother had somehow encountered The Guess Who when they were just Canadian band mostly and anyway at some point she had an 8-track cassette called like sewn and grown in Canada or something like that and it was about growing pot and it's before Burton Cummings and it's so early man it's totally 60 stuff but oh my God some of those songs were killer. Clock on the wall, and what's the one with all the skeletons dancing? Shaking All Over. Which I believe is a cover of even an earlier 50s kind of rockabilly thing or something.
@@squirrel2000 I didn't know that bit about the name change history, that's crazy.
They better be in the rock and roll hall of fame! They definitely belong there!!
I'm 72, Saw the Guess Who live in 1970 at Moody Colleseum on the SMU campus with beautiful long haired Debi. Great memories.
This is a solid performance almost exactly like the original 1969 record with the exception of some of the scatting. More amazing since they play so well live. Thank you for reacting to this one.
Burton Cummings had a fantastic voice with then band and in his solo work.
You reviewed "Stand Tall" by Burton Cummings in another video. Same guy! After the Guess Who broke up he went out on his own. I saw him in 1976 and then again in 2019.....his voice was exactly the same. Canadians are so proud of him!
Listen to one of his solo songs, “Stand Tall” to hear more of his vocal talents.
And then I noticed that he already has.
Burton Cummings is The Voice.
My All-Time Favorite Guess Who song!!! Burton Cummings is amazing.
Harri, you gotta do Stand Tall, from Burton Cummings’ solo career. It’s just him and his piano. The man can flat out sing and this one really showcases his talent. Recommend the CBC TV Special video from 1977.
The lead guitarist is Randy Bachman, later of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Both the Guess Who and BTO are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Let's correct this!
& he wrote the song!
You really need to listen to the studio version to truly appreciate just how good Burton sings.
Burton Cummings was a force. He & Randy Bachman made some incredible music. One of the top 5 Canadian bands, IMHO. ✌️❤️🎶
this video is a performance in 1983 taped by the CBC. In 1983, the original lineup reunited for a bit. The Guess Who started in Winnipeg, Canada in 1965 and they lasted until about 1976. They had a few different guitarists over their time. The original doesn't sound much different than this. It's very different than most of their songs. The original guitarist, Randy Bachman, also has a love of jazz, which explains why this song seems atypical. Here's a bit on the song en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undun_(song)
actually this version is very close to the original recording. i am glad because sometimes bands changed up their songs a bit too much and many times ruined them because of it
The major difference, sound-wise, from the studio version is the chorus pedal effect on the guitar. The song is from 1969. The chorus pedal was invented in 1975 or thereabouts.
Burton Cummings went solo for a few years after they broke up. Listen to his hit single from 1976 "Stand tall" I was a senior in high when it came out and it helped me tremendously after breaking up with a cheating girlfriend.
Sounds a lot like the 1969 original. Burton knows how to sing! I mc'd for one of his solo concerts back in the day.
The Guess Who was fantastic. Saw them live many times in Canada. Burton had q good solo career while Randy Bachman started BTO.
The singer is Burton Cummings he is an excellent musician as he can also play the piano he had a bit of a solo career after The Guess Who I think his biggest hit was a song called Stand Tall anyways keep up the good work Harry hey give us some more Blood Sweat and Tears
He is called The Voice for a reason.
Great live performance. What a voice Burton Cummings has. And another great reaction, Harri. Can't believe you have only 92K subscribers. You're the best!
Studio is always better than live. They can’t duplicate live what they can do in the studio.
Loved it! The studio version is just as cool. Great choice Harri! Great reaction
Burton Cummings was so great in this song, one of my favorites! Thanks dear Harri !! ✌👍🎶🎧🎸
Sounds just like when it was released so many years earlier.
there was a Ringo Traveling all star tour and Burton Cummings was the lead singer
"Too many great songs, too little time!" Amen, Harri! By the way, that other Burton solo you mentioned was from the extended Intro to "American Woman" you did last month. ✌💚
Grew up as a child on this band, thanks to my older brother. Such great music!
Burton taught himself the flute just for this song. The whole concert this is from is great. To really hear the full jazz effect of Randy Bachman listen to the recorded version.
The Guess Who have many great songs!💞
The Guess Who was my first concert experience in 1971. Been a fan ever since.
Haven’t heard this song in a long time. This live version is fantastic. Guess Who very underrated band.
The Guess Who were the first Canadian rock band to hit big in the U.S., and Burton Cummings is a classic. He sometimes appears with Ringo Starr's All-Star Band. It's a crime the Guess Who aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Burton Cummings solo hit "Stand Tall" is incredible.
He was a great singer and great looking, too!!!!!!
And you’ve reacted to Burton Cummings solo…. You did the song Stand Tall along time ago ☺️
