    Never laid a brick in my live but since my grandsons need money for college we are going to pour a mowing strip with one layer of brick on top. They are 19years of age I am 82, never to young or to old to learn something new.
    Excellent video, very easy to follow, we can”t wait to get started. Thank you

    Have been laying brick for 48 years. I’m semi-retired now. I do repair jobs and mail boxes etc. i started out using a 13” Rose. We laid mostly block on commercial buildings. After a few years I developed tendinitis in my elbow and my doctor told me to use a smaller trowel. I’ve used an 11 1/2” Marshalltown London narrow since then. I like the rubber handle also. Thanks for the great video.

    I have been using Rose for 22 years. It’s all about the handle. Started with the leather bound but the epoxy handle is amazing! It quickly takes shape where your pointer finger rests but somehow the butt end of the handle lasts for years with constant tapping down of material. I have always felt like there is a difference in the steel makeup between Rose and Marshaltown. When I spread a block with a Rose it feels crisp. The red handle has never felt right. Like there is a sensory disconnect. Couldn’t agree more about starting small and use what works for you! Thanks for sharing 🤙🏼

      With a leather wrapped handle! My grandfather went through quite a few of them over his 40 years. He swore the blade was stronger and liked it for snapping bricks

    Hello, union bricklayer in Chicago, Illinois area in the USA for over 20 years. My favorite trowel is W Rose 11" philly style. I also like using a rubber bumper on end of trowel handle. Great advice/video on trowels. Start out small 10", buy larger with experience. 👍

    My father was a bricklayer for years and he always use an old wooden handle London trowel which I inherited, a few years ago I tried using it to build an extension but couldn't get on with it so I bought a 10" Marshall town Philadelphia and it perfect from the off. My son now uses the same Marshall town Philadelphia in his work and he loves it.
    Great video, thanks.

    Great video, its good to see young tradesmen like you passionate about their work. When I started out 35 years ago and trained at college I was weaned on WHS 11" with LH side straight edge for cleaning the face work and curved on the RH side (slightly) for cutting (we all know you use a bolster for that) These trowels were handed. I have now sitched to using Marshalltown 11" Phili only because you can't get WHS no more, but did take a grinder to it to get it exactly how I like.

    Husky 11 1/2 x 5” pro London brick trowel for me. Great grip, great balance, perfect flex, lifetime warranty. Also when it comes to levels I prefer my 4 foot levels to be wood. Currently own a crick level. They just work out a little better for me

    When I started out I used marshaltown ( Philadelphia style) for many many years . Over the last 3 years I have opted for the £5 special from the local d I y dealership. After a while a trowel is just a trowel and the action comes from the wrists and not the tool .
    In my opinion marsaltowns are available in most merchants and that’s why most people use them ( last min impulse buy type thing )
    And to answer the question the best trowel is the 1 that’s cleaned off and in the bucket heading for the van at home time . Just remember people if you look after you’re trowel it will look after you . And ladies !! Size doesn’t matter .

    • @RodianBuilds
      @RodianBuilds  5 років тому

      I agree it's the bricklayer and not the trowel. A good bricklayer can use any trowel. And deffo, the clean trowel in the bucket after a good week is the best. Well said 🧱👍🏻😁

    I use Marshalltown 11 1/2 Philadelphia. Love the extra mud and the balance like you said. W. Rose is also a top choice for a few reasons. One is they are all a little different as far as snap from the manufacturing process. And the selection of handles like the half wrapped leather ones.

    He was piece work bricklayer so needed to pick max trowel full mortar to minimise pick up.

    I’ve got the same old debate as a carpenter, estwing or Stanley for the hammers, I personally prefer a estwing over the Stanley’s because of the balance but I wouldn’t go around slagging the Stanley’s off as an inferior hammer, it’s just what feels comfy in our hand as you’ll have it in your hand 5-6 hours out of 8 in working day

    I have a 9inch w.rose Narrow! I think it’s all in the pitch of the neck I have found! You have a lot of brands that the neck look like a 90 degree angle almost like marshalltown trowels I bought before. I think with that almost vertical neck put a lot of strain on your wrist and forearm especially If your laying up high for awhile that day! With the rose trowel the angle of the neck is less and the pitch of handle is a lot better and makes just for a lot more comfortable day of laying and less strain But that’s just my opinion every has theirs

    I have a marshaltown 1912 with the wooden handle. its unique seems much lighter and less numb than any other 1912 I pick up. it's down to about ten and a half now and getting a bit short. I find the longer ones much easier to get your darbo in a nice long roll on the board before I lay it on the brick.

    • @RodianBuilds
      @RodianBuilds  5 років тому

      Soinds like you've laid a few with that one if it's down to a 10.5! A 12 would be a bit too big for me but each to their own. Keep up the good work buddy 👍🏻🧱

    • @MrBez007
      @MrBez007 5 років тому

      @@RodianBuilds To be honest i dont lay that many, might be on the trowel for 3 months solid then not pick it up for another three months.
      There is a bit of a misconception that if you use a big trowel you need to load it to the limit with darbo, and it will give you a bad wrist or tennis elbow.
      Id pick up the same amount of gear with a 10" or 12" trowel, but with the longer trowel its in a much better shape ready to spread on the bricks. Imagine a roll as opposed to a heap.

    *LONDON OR PHILLY ARE PRO DOMINATE. IT IS THE LENGTH OF THE TROWEL THAT IS MOST IMPORTANT. I USE A 9" TROWEL FOR BRICK AND 11.5" TROWEL FOR BLOCK. STILL ABLE TO GET THE MORTAR SPREAD OF 2 BRICK OR 4 BLOCK PER TROWEL OF MUD. THE 9" LONDON IS EASIER TO USE DUE TO THE SHORTER BLADE.*

    the key issue is: use what are you used to!
    - wood handle
    - one straight side, not curved. Lets me check if the laid brick is vertical by just laying the trowel edge against it.

    My first trail is the trail you use the 11inch MT but I was spilling to much muck down the cavity so I got a 10inch marshal town leather handle Philadelphia pattern and it’s good but not good for laying them big long beds. Anyway my friends 11inch MT seems lighter then mine but he says it’s because I don’t clean around the handle but I do. I think my trail could be fake I did it get it from the market. I'm using a w rose 11inch Philadelphia patern really love it.
    I started out (only a year and a half ago mind) with a Marshalltown in same size and pattern. My wirst was aching after half an hour laying. Then I heard a few people talking about w rose and they're a bit easier on the wrist so decided to buy one and i really enjoy using it.
    Looking back the aches probably were due to lack of experience and the fact that my wrist was weak but honestly wouldn't look back.
    My boss still takes every opportunity to take the piss out of it but at the end of the day if it's comfortable and makes you money who gives a fuck?

    Yeah There's Nothing Like a Worn in Trowel.. I Have One I Use for Stonework, It's Like an Old Friend. The Wear Isn't Something you Could Grind or Sand into it.. I Often Say it's Like it's Averaged Every Stone. it Happens to Be a London Pattern Marshalltown. I Like Marshalltown & Rose. I've a Rose Trowel that's Exactly the Same Footprint as the Marshalltown the Difference is the Angle of the Handle. the Rose is More Comfortable. I Dislike & Won't Own a Trowel with a Spot Welded Handle! Another Thing I Like to Do as I Break in a Trowel & Clean it Up Occasionally is Plung it In & Out of Damp Sand. I'll Do it On Break or in the Pile of Sand at the Stoneysrd. Give it a Nice Polish.

    • @RodianBuilds
