Found this by accident. I'm 75. My dad, b. 1919, picked up one of these little stoves from a surplus store in Anchorage where we lived in 1946, and many times as a boy I saw it heating coffee or soup during camping trips, power outages, and cross-country road trips. I have it now, and should go through it before passing it along. Thank you for your well-done video!!
This is without a doubt the most thorough and concise pressurized fuel video on UA-cam. No unnecessary banter, nostalgic, time wasting trips down memory lane or annoying music. You efficiently dispensed with factual information and instructions with proper, concise nomenclature. Far and away the most efficient and instructional dissertation available on the subject matter. Best regards. We appreciate your hard work.
Well done. The most perfect disassembly and dissertation. I am in awe. Yes I have one of these I bought from Ebay. I tested it with a full fuel tank. I pumped it up, The pump feels loose, check valve condition is unknown. Nothing bent. But pumping it, causes fuel to leak at the knurling at the tank, at the base of the threads for the cap. I have to assume that the knurling means that the filler neck/tank cap can be unscrewed from the tank? Any experience with this Mr. Rubin?
The fuel valve assembly is the same as the one in a 220 lantern. The reason it wants a 1/4 turn to light is that is the mixing position. The valve is ported to draw air from the tank (that is why the filler is below the top of the tank to create and air space) and mix with fuel when lighting. After the burner is hot and the generator is hot the fuel vaporizes on it own as it exits the generator tip. Then you turn the valve full on to only pick up fuel from the tank. Should also repressurize the tank at that time too. The tip cleaner will clog up if you use it for a variable fuel control. Like a 220 lantern this stove is either full on or off. Off is the knob not the tip cleaner.
Great informative video. Job well done. Just a thought about draining the fuel from the fount. I have rebuilt many lanterns and stoves over the years and found that the lanterns I find with white gas or Coleman fuel in them are in really nice shape with little to no rust inside. In every case I have found one with no fuel the fount has heavy to severe rust a pitting. The white gas has rust inhibitors in it. Once again Great video. Thanks for sharing and God bless.
I was lucky enough to obtain one of these recently and by god your video was AMAZING for me to work on it and/or troubleshoot it....VERY well done...VERY well laid out video....kept simple YET super helpful/educational. I'm pleased to say that between you and your video and with a few parts from old coleman parts I now have a awesome and functional unit that I use on a regular basis when out in the bush!! Thank you!! Oh...and also got my hands on a old Coleman 2 burner "Gold Bond" unit and enjoyed your other video on those types of stoves trying out different fuels in them etc. Good stuff!!
I picked up one of these from an antique store for $18 then within a month my dad, who collected and restored Coleman lanterns, gave me a second one. They both work great.
Very well done. I just recently acquired one of these beauties and have been trying to learn all I can about them. Very much appreciate the detail in your video.
I picked one up today complete & in great shape I have many old coleman items all beautiful but this & my aladdin stove are my favorites. Thank you for sharing & keeping these classic items going.
Mine came with a round metal plate the same diameter of the stove itself. It's designed to sit on top of the burner and does seem to help reduce the heat to my canteen cup somewhat.
Great video Shipmate! Thank you for taking the time to show us this info! I just got my first 530 and looking forward to having fun with it!! vr, QM2(SS) Rinehart
Wow. Amazing video. Exactly what I needed...I bought a 530 on eBay last year, advertised to be working but its not. I will attempt this disasembly and cleaning and see what happens. Thank you.
Thank you for this great video, helped me tremendously with cleaning out my oarts. For whatever reason I can’t get my stove to light and stay lit. I think it may be the vaporizer.
@@retrotechandelectronics thank you! I double checked all parts, check valve is good and changes the cap it held pressure for 24 hrs. All I can think is vaporizer as I re-cleaned the internal tube, everything seems to be fine. Screen is somewhat dirty as I cleaned as best I could. I will keep at it though. Thank you again for this video it was extremely helpful.
There is a never ending debate on this matter. Im of the opinion for long term storage it should be completely emptied and something like inox sprayed lightly into the tank.
@@retrotechandelectronics It just says, "Made In Canada", 1-47 (January 1947). I also received the original instruction sheet with it. I got the original tool handle but did not get a fuel funnel.
Great tear down! Been going through an old Coleman stove phase, have a 502, a 413 and soon to have a 530. Curious how you think water gets into the fuel and rusts tank out… does it condense through the steel? Also I wonder if Coleman’s “anti rust” additives would help much. Plan on keeping a 530 in my vehicle
Your video inspired me to look to buy a single burner Coleman stove. There are both 520 and 530 models for sale online. Do you have an opinion on which model to purchase?
Super helpful video I just dug mine out of the crawl space this video was exactly what I was looking for Quick question my tank have a fair bit of rust in it what would you recommend to clean that out
Thank you for this wonderful video ….. I recently purchased. This stove but I’m having hard time looking for a replacement non return valve for the pump Any idea on replacement model number or any other Coleman non return pump valves fit this and hat special tool do I need to remove it , thank you
Hello I had a quick question for you about the Coleman 530. I have one and it's the b46. I completely tore it down and cleaned everything I could and got it working damn near perfect. The only issue that I have that I was hoping maybe you could give me some idea on how to fix it is, when I get done using it and I turn it off and I leave the lever the lever with the cleaning needle down, and I turn the knob to the off position the burner still goes for about 5 more minutes minimum and never completely actually shuts off. With the lever down I know that means that the needle is down so it's letting the fuel up so I do that and then turn the knob completely off but it still continues to burn not quite as high as when I had the knob turned all the way up but it goes for 5 or 10 minutes before it slowly eventually turns off do you think that's a issue with the knob and I'm not sure how to adjust that. The lever seems to work fine and everything else is perfect but that's my only issue is turning it off it seems to not turn off when I have that knob all the way to the off position. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you very much for everything and I love the video

The documentation does state that the cleaner handle can be used as an adjustment for simmer, that for a function demo video, not for regular water boil testing .

Being a sealed (pressure) system I wouldn't think moister would make it's way in if you shut it off after use
Moisture in the atmosphere pumped into the font where it condenses. Being heavier than the fuel it settles in the bottom causing rust.
