Great episode. When I was younger and lived in London I often used Liverpool Street and the old platform 3 was regularly used as an auxiliary terminus for rush hour Metropolitan trains from Amersham/Watford/Uxbridge, there being only two useable platforms at Aldgate. Moorgate also used bay platforms for this.
Also on the Eastbound (>Aldgate/East) Metropolitan/Circle platform there was for seveeral decades a bar on the platform where one could ( and I often did) buy a pint waiting for next train): a bit like at Sloane Square but less enclosed.

Lovely to see bits of Liverpool Street I've never seen, do love spotting the few details at the station I see replicated at other stations on the "Eastern" line (London to Norwich). One of these days I'll photograph them all!

Wow, what a memory jerker, I remember going on the old escalators in their own little individual tunnels, back in the 70's on my way to/from school. They really had a charm about them, and would be a bit miffed when they were closed at certain times. Makes me feel old seeing them looking like that now.

When I was younger and lived in Chesham, I’d occasionally get one of the two rush hour trains in the morning that went through to London (rather than the usual shuttle to Chalfont and Latimer) and these trains terminated at Liverpool Street.

I was lucky enough to be involved in the planning and parliamentary stages of the Crossrail Bill. The Geotechnical project to instrument the entire line of route was a massive undertaking: done mainly (IMHO) to defend claims from land owners who wanted compensation after subsidence during and post build. Who can forget the clusters of laser targets around all the stations along the route - particular TCR.

Another great video and a very interesting station as well. I'm more familiar with the National Rail station of old and that's changed enormously in the last 40 years. I'd not really considered the London transport parts of the station, so it was really interesting to see all the history that's there.

My main memory of using Liverpool Street in the mid 1960s is the bar on platform 1 !!!
From memory, it was basically a counter in a hole in the wall, and it sold Bass, tapped straight from the barrels tilted at an angle and placed only a short distance behind the bar so that those serving the crowds of thirsty homeward bound commuters only had a short distance to move to fill the pint glasses which were then swiftly downed before rushing to the appropriate platform of the British Rail station for the last leg home
    Happy days

Hi gang I was confused by your description of platform 3 behind the hording. As a schoolboy, back before the 1960 electrification, I remember watching some of the electric loco operated trains would run to Liverpool Street, with destination Board at the front, and the loco from the previous train would sit in a shunt opposite the Signal Box. When the service left the incoming loco would reverse into the shunt for the next duty. This mimicked the "Jazz" workings of the steam suburban service of the main line trains. Also when first constructed and included in the Act of Parliament there was a direct connection from the Metropolitan to Platform 1 of the mainline station.

Great video , I was at Liv Street today and look up at the door to the tight on platform one that used to go to the Liverpool Street Arcade, I( I think it's the one you were in at the start ) It was a shortcut to the central line. Also, I remember I had to walk through a long sloping tunnel to get to the platforms

John Lyon: former headmaster of Harrow School. There was a pub in Harrow named after him. It makes sense that a Metropolitan Line/Railway train would be named after him.

I was forgetting that this film was only for the tube, I have lots of memories of the mainline station in the late 1950’s onwards, it was Spartan, platform 1 had a connection to the the LT lines, a cross bridge between the two mainline parts, underground toilets, all under British Rail.
There were some things seen that I had no memory of before the opening of Crossrail, wasn’t aware of those entrances from the Central line platforms to those old lift shafts.
I remember the disused LT platform 4, remember trains terminating there, they sold the site for a building above. I used to use the Broad Street station that was next door.
All in all, a nice tour team, looking forward to your next tour.

The 'lift shaft' you looked at just off the eastern end of the CL's eastbound platform (and 600 ft away from Broad Street) wasn't one that led to Broad Street station according to the CLR's construction plans.

So these were the original escalator shafts that went up to Broad Street station and were taken out of use when it was demolished? Also just beyond the signal box was a tunnel that could take Metropolitan trains through to the main Liverpool Street station and beyond.

You didn't mention perhaps the most unique feature of Liverpool Street, the never really used 1875-1907 connection between the Met and platforms 1/2 of Liverpool Street mainline station. It may be there's not enough left to include or that what's left is all on the Network Rail side but still it was probably the most unique feature of that station. I'd have hoped you'd have a few pictures of the connection (or its remains) in the museum photo collection.

Also with the comments about the lavishness of the party for the opening of the Central Railway station. Would this have been helped from the supplies from the Great Eastern hotel and Masonic Hall above?
