Following the tarana alap, in this excerpt of a much longer performance, the senior Dagar Brothers develop this incomparable vilambit gat to cry out to Jagath Janani, the mother of the universe, here in the form of the power of knowledge and music, Mother Sarawati and the power of austerity in Mother Parvati to deliver fertility, love and beauty. The Dagar Brothers use the searing andolan, the slow wavering oscillation (around the notes Rishabh and Dhaivat that characterize Rag Bhairavi) to contrast the benevolent aspects of the goddess to her terrifying (Bhairavi) dimension. One hears both the "tooth mother" and the "breast mother" in this powerful rendering.
