The DSL40CR is probably the best value-for-money that Marshall has ever offered.
The old DSL40C was already good, but the CR tops it in every way - sounds better, has more features, and slightly easier to maintain*.
I have zero regrets about buying one.
*On the old DSL40C, if you were changing power-amp tubes you'd have to pull the chassis to bias said tubes - the trimpots and test jacks were on the inside, and the test jacks were mirrored from the valve positions (so the left trimpot adjusted the right-side tube, and vice versa). On the CR, the test jacks and trimpots actually correspond and are on the outside of the chassis, in the speaker enclosure. That makes it much easier, not to mention safer - no chassis-pulling means no chance of accidentally touching a capacitor that sends high voltage through your body.
Congratulations. Cheers
Beautiful,,marshall continues to impress! Never disappoints!
superb job on this demo & review ! Cheers Hack !
Thanks Mark. Cheers
Excellent demo! Love the old school look you decided to get!
Thanks buddy. Cheers
Excellent setting choices and demo. Mine gets here MONDAY FUNDAY!
Awesome. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
I’ve been looking at this amp and the Blackstar ht40mkii. I think I’ve decided on the Marshall after watching your video. It just has that classic Marshall chug we all know and love. Thanks!
Glad I can help and welcome to the channel. Cheers
So what did you get? I'm actually thinking about buying Engl Screamer or the Blackstar HT Club 40 Mk2, but am also thinking about getting this Marshall into the equation. Never owned a Marshall before.
Just ordered mine, can’t wait to get it!
Congratulations! You'll love it. Welcome to the channel. Cheers
Nice demo/review, brother!! \m/
Cheers buddy.
Anything Marshall Rocks! Watching now! Definitely sounds better with the power section cranked. Nice review!
Thanks for watching. Cheers
Awesome review
Thanks buddy. Cheers
I've been through a lot of amps over the years, but this is the only one that truly hits the spot. Even sweeter with a vintage 30 speaker upgrade.
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Vintage 30 better than V Type?
Sounds awesome Hack,classic Marshall tone.
Thanks Bobby. Cheers
I bought one of these back in like April for like $500 B-stock (not the fancy vintage looking one but still a 40CR) and I would agree it's probably the absolute best Marshall or Marshall-style amp you can get in this price range. It'll get you close enough sound-wise to stuff like a JCM-800 or a Plexi that I think all but the biggest tone snobs would be satisfied, especially since you don't have to part with thousands of dollars for the privilege.
Totally agree. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
I liked it the way you demo this stuff
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
I absolutely love my DSL 40. I've had it about a year and have yet to find anything I don't like about it. I do, however, think I'd like to try out a few different speskers with it. It's a really good amp and it doesn't break the bank. What more could you want.
Exactly Mike. Thanks for watching. Cheers
Apparently the Creamback is the best for this amp.....
Thank you for showing the back of the amp and also using a strat as most people do not do that!
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Sounds a great amp Hack. and very versatile Cheers buddy
Thanks buddy. Cheers
Sounds great! Nice amp
Thanks for watching. Cheers
That is a rockin amp. Great review.
Thanks Ivan. Cheers
Awesome video….I have this exact amp and love it…how are your ears after that..lol. I’m using mine wit an attunator and still haven’t cranked it. After this video I’m going to try it
Glad you like the amp. My ears are fine 🙂 Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
I had this amp…loved it, but it died 2 weeks after I got it. GC took it back of course.
Very happy with this amp¡¡¡ It has an awesome clean for being a Marshall... and it really helps to crank masters....
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
I bought the cream version of this, the black vintage models are impossible to find. I will buy the next new release they issue.
I'm on my second one.
Awesome review! Thank you! You helped me decide to get this one. I come from the acoustic guitar world and now getting into electric. Is there a way to connect headphones on this amp to practice and not have sound coming out of the speaker, I don't think this one has headphone out. Maybe using the line out with headphone pre amp? Not sure if that will mute the speaker. Thanks.
Glad I could help. The line out doesn't mute the speaker btw. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Hi sir. Im wonder if you set stand by if you should achieve silent recording? If yes then may be line out should be also for silent headphone usage. If is signal not enough for headphone then check Hot amps from Czech. The company offer power break with headphone connectivity I think around 150 -200Eur. This might help. Cheers D.
David Popelka yes. It’s noted in the instruction manual to put it on standby for silent practice.
The emulated output doesn't mute the speaker, but it keeps going on Standby mode - that's how you'd use it with headphones.
Nice sounding amp @guitar Hack
Thanks for watching. Cheers
I have one. My friend said it sounds as good as his Friedman runt.
Thanks for the review! Does the emulated out when engaged mute the speaker? What about the headphone out? Thanks! The reason for cranking the master is it's the power tubes working hard vs the pre-amp tubes which makes it sound fuller.
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. The emulated doesn't mute the speaker and doesn't sound good at all unfortunately. Not sure about the headphone out.
@@GuitarHack66 Ahh good to know thank you!
To use headphones you leave the amp in standby mode.
As fewer and fewer players use the classic Marshall half stack or full stack, I think that this type of 12" Combo style amp may really end up being the future of Marshall and several other companies that are more known for powerful 4X12" cabinets and large high powered heads. I'm thinking in terms of Carvin and their X-100 pedal, for instance...it replaces an old 100 watt tube head, placed in a preamp pedal.
I agree with you. This and smaller heads like 20W with 212 cans. Thanks for watching. Cheers
I have this amp. I want to be buried with it and my les paul. Lol
It is great. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Awesome!!!
You prolly dont care but if you guys are stoned like me atm you can watch all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last few days =)
@Jude Gary yea, have been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself =)
Great demo. I have this amp and after warming it up for about 40mins it is superb. In years to come I think it will be regarded as one of Marshall's best ever combo amps.
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Sounds excellent man love the vintage look. I’m a huge fan of the dsl platform I gigged a jcm 2000 for years
Cool Daniel. Cheers
The limited edition has the UK Marshall Vintage by Celestion only 500 were made they came in cream tolex...I got one.
I've had one for about 3 months.. best gear decision I made. I wasn't real keen on the V-type so I bought a UK made V30 and it was a big tonal improvement.. very pleased with it.
Yeah I love mine too. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel.
Thinking of doing this as well. Would the v30 be better speaker for late 70s and 80s rock? That’s what I’ll primarily use the amp for
@@jesse401 I would recommend a greenback over a v30 for this amp
The DSL40C has unmatched big-cab sound that I have not been able to duplicate with other combos. The JVM205C is close, and a great amp, but not as "full" as the DSL40C. Even the DSL20C (same circuitry, lower power) does not produce the big-cab sound. Have tried Blackstar, Catalyst, EVH 5150 Iconic, and Soldano mini-SLO thru a Marshall 2x12 cab, and Bugera B22 Infinium, and others. A Line 6 modeling amp comes close, but you have to live with the SS OD and not warm Tube tones. I wish I had 3 or 4 of these to back up my #1.
Great review Hack!nice playing,Cheers
Appreciate it. Cheers
Best review of the dsl 40cr on the internet 👌
I also have the same amp
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Sounds Awsome
Thanks J. Cheers
I want to buy this amp but not sure if you can play thrash metal like early Metallica with it. What do you think? Also, what is the difference between the CR and C? Is this amp loud enough to play in a metal band over live drums?
I gig with it so yes you can use it with a drummer. The gain channel can pretty heavy so you might be ok. The CR has a better speaker in it but they're almost the same. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Four big upgrades from the C to the CR. 1) Better speaker (subjective but seems to be the consensus on all the reviews) 2) Master volume controls 3) External biasing pots 4) Six button footswitch available that makes the CR a four channel amp.
Absolutely! Look for a UA-cam channel "lambchopper678" for direct proof.
A wonderful amp for the price. I know Blues players and hard rock players. They all love this amp. That's saying something.
Yeah. Its great for the money.
I just bought a used CR and I haven't had a chance to really drive it yet. Two comments - 1) One improvement on the CR that no one talks about is the external biasing pots. When you change power tubes, you have to take the C version apart to set the bias on the board. With the CR, the pots are on the bottom inside with easy access without taking it apart. 2) The 6 button footswitch (PEDL91016) is a must. It turns the CR into a 4 channel amp by allowing you to switch between channel voices as well a channels.
Great amp but needs separate EQ for the 2 channels like JVM models.
Do you have to adjust ur eq when you go from the clean to the gain channel?
I'll usually turn the treble down but in a band context I leave it to cut through. Thanks for watching. Cheers
The guitar sounded a little out
Yeah at the start it was. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
When I change my LP strings I change one, lay the guitar flat on my lap, grab the string with both hands in numerous places, bend the string away from the neck, tune, do it again, tune, do it again .... for about 6 or 7 times until the string stays in tune. Then I go on to the next string. That keeps me in tune really well. Just don't snap the strings when you stretch them. The amps sounds great, especially on the 2nd high gain channel. Gain channel 1 sounds good too ... like classic Marshall sounds .... like on Michael Schenker's Armed and Ready or Victim of Illusion studio versions.
Love mine
Nice sounding amp and a great price!!!!
Thanks for watching Jamal. Cheers
Guitar Hack Hey no problem!!!
I own the amp good review very good amp
Thanks so much for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Don’t leave your phone on an amp with such big transformers and their magnetic fields.
I have this amp and love it! Does anybody find the clean channel is very quiet compared to any of the drive channels though? I mean the classic green channel.
Thanks for watching. I don't find that but I have the masters on full and control channel volume at the channel. I find the amp sounds best this way. Cheers
Yes. I compensate by running the clean channel on a higher master volume than the gain channel. Its easier if you have the 6 button footswitch
Both the DSL40C & DSL40CR can develop
this problem of the relay kicks out & the amp goes silent untill you turn it off & on again . I've been trying to solve this problem with Marshall trying to help me .for about 2 years now . These amps sound ok . especially at lower gain .like JCM800 gain anything more it's soup .
I've been lucky with mine but I've heard about those problems. Thanks for watching.
This sort of problem is disturbing. Imagine gigging with this and it cut out. Iv a black star ID 60 at the moment looking for first real tube amp tho....
the amp has only been out 1 year. How can you have been working with Marshall for 2?
On my DSL40, I switch from the classic gain channel to the ultra gain, the treble increase is unbearable. I’ve heard about a mod where a certain capacitor can be changed or eliminated to resolve this problem. I don’t really want to get into something like that. Otherwise, an outstanding amplifier.
Put in a Groove Tube 12/AX7 preamp tube in V1 smooths it right out
I have the standard DSL40cr any reliability issues you've faced?
None so far. Cheers
Is ti loud enough for playin with a very very loud rock drummer? Thanks
I've used it for gigs with a drummer so it's loud enough.
I think the guitar was outta tune in the beginning. I have this amp and its a killer amp. not even for the price, that don't matter in this conversation, its just a killer amp.
I love kine
@@GuitarHack66 what does "kine" mean? Thanks for the review on this. New subscriber and my new dsl40cr vintage is supposed to arrive tomorrow via FedEx who now delivers on Saturday and Sundays I found out.
@@gigmandrew8975 I’m not sure if that was a typo or Hawaiian pigeon/slang. He love da kine tho! And yeah, he should have tuned the guitar before starting to record 🤪
Nice review! I have a chance to buy one for $400 bucks is it worth it?
Definitely. That's a great deal and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Yes
make sure it's the DSL40CR and not the DSL40C.
nice! Spent the first 10 minutes just strumming some chords.... then 10:15
Gain is good!
Very true lol. Cheers
I'm not a chugger, more of a coffee sipper. LOL
😎🖖
Where were you able to find the DSL40CR with the vintage logo and the salt and pepper checkered grill cloth? I’ve seen the DSL40CRV posted that has the vintage aesthetics but they all seem to have the black grill cloth
Here's where I got mine.

Guitar Hack awh man I think they only ship within Canada?
Guitar Hack I think I might go with the cream version then
@@calegria92Cool. Congratulations

Is this amp loud enough to play out? Doesn’t sound like it has any real volume at all
This is my second dsl40 that I've been gigging with the for last 5 years so yes it is loud enough. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
40 tube watts is so loud in most bars you won't be able to play that loud. I have a 3203 artist with a 4x10 and its 30watts I run a hot plate and have it cracked and without the attenuator its just way, way too loud
40 watts can rip a head off
It's a 40 watt tube amp. There's no such thing as a 40 watt tube amp that doesn't have "real volume".
This demo seems to be recorded at residential-friendly volumes. The amp sounds *better* at stage volume.
@@JohnvanCapel Agreed
I like a Stratocaster in a Fender amp and a Les Paul in a Vox or Marshall... but that's just me..
That's fair. Welcome to the channel. Cheers
What speaker come that marshall?
They call it a celestion V type speaker. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Idk why, I don’t even like said band as much. But this sounds so much like Motley Crue to me
I believe they played Marshall so...but thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Nice amp. Nice review. This (The newer) dsl40 is a really good amp now.
Yeah it's great. Thanks for watching. Cheers
I own one and there is no doubt this is the best amp in this range. Had mine 3 and a half years no problems, sounds outstanding. It rocks! Second best I have heard is the Origin.
I have the Origin also. Cheers
@@GuitarHack66 That's awesome Hack. I found out about your channel months ago while watching Chris of Guitar Pit. He said I'm gonna be on tonight with Guitar Hack and he is an expert on all things Gibson. I thought, man I gotta watch this. I love your gear! You rock.
@@JWCFB Thanks so much and welcome to the channel.
how can you have owned one 3 and a half years, when this video was uploaded when the DSL40CR was only available for 1 year earlier?
maybe you have the DSL40C? They are not remotely the same.
@@zakklee2556 Yes I do own the dsl40c and I consider both of them to be outstanding sounding amps. The CR has more features and a different speaker.
the difference - pre-amp vs power-amp tube. Bigger bottles, bigger balls baby.
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
No the boss katana is
For a solid state amp yes.
guitar needs tuned my brother...
Marshall DSL could be the best Metal amp for the money. Only topped by the JVM410H. BUT Marshall needs to speed-up the technology of its electronics to include red box, variable power output and direct record features like the Hughes & Kettner. We're in 2020 for feck sake & Marshall electronics is still in stuck in 20 years ago low tech with mics technic
There is a line out but it's super noisy. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
There's an emulated output on the amp for direct-recording, and it has a 20-watt mode, but Hack chose to use neither. Go off though, tell me again how you didn't even bother to look at the spec-sheet.
It blows fuses too easy
I own this model for a couple of years and owned the previous version for about 6 years and have never blown a fuse. You must have got a lemon because that's not a regular thing. Good luck 👍
Lil out of tune
Yeah. Sorry about that.
Np nice demo. Great amps man !
