- For the first time in almost a thousand years, a Royal Marine is picking up the Tower of London keys.
Sir Gordon Messenger was installed on Thursday as the 161st Constable of the Tower of London.
The role is one of the oldest in the country - since 1078, the Constable of the Tower has been the crown's chief agent in the capital, watching over prisoners and overseeing operations and security.

When I was in the US Army back in the 1980's I used to be part of the aggressor forces for the NATO LERP school at Weingarten, Germany. Aggressing against the Royal Marine commandos, British Paras and SAS was the highlight of my career. They were (are) damn good and glad they are on our side as I would not want to fight them for real!
@Stanly Stud yh but he's talking about his personal experiences.
He obviously didn't experience the other combat infantry units.
But tbh the two of them he mentioned are the gate way units to the special force's.
Royal marines ( SBS)
British paras ( SAS)
@Stanly Stud yh but I was just stating that typically they would come from the regiments as I stated above, but anyone in the British military in any regiment who has served for I believe 2 years at the minimum can apply to join any of the special forces branches as mentioned.
No need to get personal and try to belittle someone saying little kid and play the PlayStation? Why are you so butt hurt?
Nothing I said in my comment would warrant the abuse.
One of my deployments I worked together with SAS in Helmund. It was one of the highlights of my career. I still talk to one of them. Unfortunately it was only for 1.5 months as we worked a network together, it’s also pretty rare.
I have never had so much tea in my life.
@@FormerGovernmentHuman Thanks for your service🎖💂♂️
My Dad was in the Royal Marines 1944-45, he went to the far East, and didnot get home until 1946.He was a Signal man.
No. He was a HERO.
Thank you.☮️
Man those uniforms are beautiful
😆
Gotta hand it to them, nobody does ceremonies quite like the British. Particularly military ceremonies.
I like the American and French ones as well, though the US doesn't do them often, at least it isn't that awful goose step, it'd make sense for the Germans to do it, but Russians?
French and American aswell they are amazing
@@titanlord9267 when us does do them in general public (military school graduatation or rotc/jrotc ami's not counting) they go in pure *m a s s*

So they have their own pub at the Tower Of London!
That's brilliant!!😉😉
All regiments have their own pub. Some official some cough unofficial.
The 3rd United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) had their own bar, in one of their barracks buildings at Ft. Myer, VA.
That's so cool. I learned something new today. God bless all. Peace be with you
God bless you.

well done gordy you continue to be a Corps treasure.
Onyas gordy, long overdue Royal taking charge there! Just like yesterday when you marched in as a young subbi to 45cdo. Well done lad.
Greetings to all from Quincy, Massachusetts! And a special congratulations to Sir Gordon.
Greetings from North Belfast . Congratulations to Sir Gordon as well.
American Marines wear the Globe and Anchor, the Royal Marines wear the Globe and Laurel, yes they are a little older than the U.S. Marine Corps!
A hundred and eleven years distance. But in so many ways they are Brother Corps
I was there the day before this ceremony, while they were setting everything up, and I had a really nice conversation with one of the Beefeaters on duty. They are part of an elite group, and they each have a fascinating story to tell. Besides, who wouldn't love to live at such an historic place?
I hope for you wellness on your new duty sir! May you be ever vigilant!
Thank you.
The Marine: I know a place...😉
I understand the wine barrel king tax, but which monarch had a vendetta (or hunger) towards swans?!?
The Crown has a prerogative over all unmarked swans in open water in England and Wales. Obviously this is largely ceremonial these days but there's still a Royal Keeper of the Swans, and swans are sometimes sent as gifts to other countries. The King shares the "ownership" of the swans on the Thames with the Vintners Company, and Dyers Company and in July each year they "divvy up" the swans - which these days means checking their health, and recording the birds details - in a ceremony termed "Swan Upping".
They're were a delicacy back in the day, and only Royals were allowed to eat them.
@@malcolmrose3361 neat
because all swans in the UK belong to the crown (or used to). Who knows what that rule was about - maybe the Constable had the duty of fetching the swan back before it swam out to sea?
Semper Fidelis Sir
He can't even hunt swans in the river anymore? For shame.
Prince Ann wonderful!!
I noticed the Yeoman Warders were wearing King's Crowns on their ceremonial uniforms but E R was still written on the front and rear of their frocks. And the head warden still had a Queen's Crown above his chevrons.
Very cool stuff
Cool history in the present.
lol. my father was stationed in the tower after return from dunkikk made keys in towers machine shop. and sold them to americans for 5 pounds ea. told them they were old.
Okay I watched it twice and missed the part where they say why it's been a thousand years since they've done this? What gives?!
Yeah was wondering that too
Something to do with being a "Sworn Force". Allegiance to the Monarch, the Commander-in-Chief. The Allegiance of the Royal Navy was accepted as "unquestionable", so Matelots & Boot-Necks were NOT "Sworn Men". This "rite" was Reserved for Pongos & Crab-Fat. Ditto for Standing Guard @ Buckingham Palace, etc, etc.
Is this a good time to join the army?
Brilliant Ceremony and a Happy Community but we may need to learn a few lessons from History.
Belated congregations!
1:35 Preobrazhensky russian march played.
I haven’t heard that name in forever
At least now the keys will be safe
unless it made of crayons
If he eats them, its on you
It would never occur to me to eat a swan. Unless I got his job, then I'd have to. Lol
Per mare Per Terram
By sea by land
What is the end of the Crown.
the king was navy so the guards are navy this is why
never heard of it - what a great piece of history to continue on ...
Why has it taken so long to pass the keys? Did they not need them for a thousand years?
I'm fairly sure the Royal Marines didn't exist 1,000 years ago.
so? is the tower of london his now? or can he just walk in there whenever he wants to
"His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of The Tower of London" is not really his obviously, but yes, he can come and go.
why was the chief beefeater missing a medal on a ribbon??
"The first time in a thousand years" .. the royal marines were established in 1664
constable of the tower position is over a 1000 years old, it's the first time that a marine has taken the keys in that thousand years even they were around for just half of that.
Next time listen to the context......
@@jhnshep how can it be over a 1000 the tower is 944 years old
@@billywhizz1656 it was built in 1066, its about 956 year's old. But I may be wrong.
@@Andy-ScotsIrish-TheGAEL. just with in give are take 50 years
2:00, What happened to his medal the recent one there is nothing but ribbon?
You will see this for many personell involved in the recent state funeral of the late queen. They will receive an RVM (some even an MVO), but it wasn't awarded yet. However, they are eligble to wear the ribbon itself
Brilliant now let's make room for the Sussex's there new London residents
If I'm not mistaken that's the Victorian Cross hanging around his neck. Now I'm curious what badass act he did to be awarded such an honor 🤔
Nvm just looked him up and apparently I was mistaken 🤷♂️
It's the Order of the Bath
But why is it the first time in thousand years?
Because marines are navy. And traditionally it was the army who guarded the tower.
Wouldn't be a British ceremony without at least one robe and funny hats.
0:19 Gotta smell those sticks.
1:35 Is that the Preobrazhensky March?! Or was the Preobrazhensky copied from the British?🤔
10 dollars to whoever steals a beef eater pike for me.
All of that for that? Whatever floats your boat, I suppose!
Why have they still got the queen's crown on their dress uniform?
So, the Beefeaters use the Tudor crown with the late queen's ER insignia? 🤔
Obviously takes time to replace everything with the old cypher. Can’t produce anything in advance when the next monarch‘s regnal name needs to be announced first
@@user-ir7os6wh1w Ah yes, but I always thought ER was associated with the St. Edwards crown..

What did they do 1000 years ago, misplace the key?
It was a sad battle 1,000 years ago. 50 enemy were at the gate of a now gone fort. The 200 men in the fort went out to fight their enemy thinking it would be an easy fight. The enemy's reinforcement of 400 showed up. The men of the fort tried to get back in but somebody lost the key and they were locked out. Those men were wiped out. The story got out and quickly spread across the land. Now every fort, castle and military base has somebody in charge of the keys so such a fate doesn't repeat itself.
@@orlock20 absolute baloney.
The tower was built after the Norman conquest in 1066.. the story you told is fictional.
There was no battle in a castle.
It was a open battle.
The Norman's built the tower after, prior it didn't exist. So your story is fabricated lol.
@@Andy-ScotsIrish-TheGAEL. Yes it was fictional, but I never said it happened in that area. People make military improvements after learning about battles in other areas.
@@orlock20 yeah no hard feelings buddy, I maybe jumped in head first.

A little known fact but Mrs Messenger used to wear roller skates at officer’s mess parties so watch out for a sighting of a woman whizzing along like a ghost behind the ramparts.

There is a legal reason…the time is now for the royal marines to seize back crown land.

Those Yeoman Warders are seasoned members of His Majesty's Armed Forces, with at least 22 years spotless service, and having achieved the rank of WO2 (the 2nd highest NCO in the Armed Forces).
