    Nice work. Helpful to see someone work through the process, shows that anyone can achieve results.

    I have a three year old who isn't pushy in a dominant way, i can usually walk him around on a super loose lead and he'll follow and stop when i do, but if things worry him he'll try and walk on top of you (looking for comfort) would this exercise help him?

    I hate it when people hold the snap like that, pet peeve. Says it all about their lack of relationship.

    • @leealexander3507
      @leealexander3507 3 роки тому +3

      I have some guys keeping their racing stable in my otherwise unused barns. Every one of those guys lead their horses by the beard while I take even my stallion out on a loose lead. You're right. They have absolutely no relationship with any of their horses and can't imagine why their chestnut gelding and their stallion want to bite. Building a good relationship with a horse is my first priority. I do very little with a horse until we've not only begun to build a relationship but we have to have mutual trust. Once we've begun to establish those two things we can move forward in training.

      I totally get that but the spotted draft I just got (2 weeks ago) has been out on a pasture for 2 years with virtually no handling and he is a complete turd right now! So this video is perfect for his attitude! I will be doing this training asap

      My 2 year old is a bit TOO desensitized... she tried to eat the flag. Flapping rope, rhythmic pressure, swinging sticks, hand up in the face... it's all a game for her. She's not aggressive, just so bold and pushy... I'm going to try that last exercise getting her off the line.

    I have a 7 year old 18H Percheron I just purchased. He is more green than I was told, but he’s very very sweet. He is not reactive at all. He’s not pushy but he doesn’t understand to move off of pressure. He is just so kind, I really feel bad increasing the intensity and touching him with the stick when he’s not really doing anything. Is there a different approach I should do or do I need to get more intense to get a reaction out of him? He honestly doesn’t move at all, even when you tap him hard with the stick. Thoughts?

    At this point all I have to do to tell my horse I want him out of my space is give my fingertips a flick in his direction. He learned a long time ago that means I want him to move away. Although he does like to hang his head over my shoulder and that sort of thing he has never been a pushy horse. Since the only handling he'd had when I got him as a six year old was two days of unsuccessful attempts to halter him so he hadn't developed a lot of bad habits. Some people don't like him because he's pretty independent and knows he's someone in his own right but I like that about him. He has quite a personality. I find that people who dislike him micromanage their horses and even though they don't want a horse with his nature most of them admire him. Tim says he likes his horses a lot tamer. That makes me laugh. I don't see how much more kind and cooperative a horse could possibly be.

      Hello Lee, can you give me one pointer on how to build a good relationship with a horse? I have a dominant horse, he runs the small herd where I board him, and he figured out quickly how inexperienced I was. I'm learning more each week regarding ground work, but I feel like you are hinting that there is a way to build trust and respect prior to ground work. I don't want to change him a bit, I just want to better understand him. I'm with him every other day.

      @@josephtilseth5002 A horseman I respect once told me to simply BELIEVE I am the Queen and the horse is not. BUT he is the Queen's best friend, that she simply assumes will show her respect. Horses take their clues from you and your assumptions.
      The woman in the video was very hesitant about walking on the line, and even waving the stick. A Queen would just walk strongly ahead, and if by some unbelievable chance the horse did not move out of her way, the stick would be waved with casual authority. No anger, no fear, no worry, just assumption that she would be obeyed.
      In our culture this can be very hard for women, especially younger women.

      @@emilyoleary2293 also when I worked with a horse that was very desensitized to waving sticks/flags i learnt that "aiming" for more sensitive spots on the horses body helps a bit. For example when he was directly in my space and didnt react to me waving the stick/flag i would start slightly tapping on his nose as its a very sensitive spot. if he didnt respond to slight tapping i would slowly increase the energy behind it and eventually he would back off as it was quite uncomfortable for him but at the same time left enough room for him to understand that is a consequence of the lack of reaction and not just me being mean lol

    What about making the pony head shy by waving the stick in their face? That’s what I would worry about.

    • @KateTrojan
      @KateTrojan Рік тому

      I think you’d have to pretty much beat him about the head to create that scenario for this pony. The tap is more intuitive/warning 😊. Worked with a race horse who HAS been severely beat about the head with bridle and bit and that was entirely different (not my trainer/boss who did it but the prior one). Once he knew you he was the cuddliest horse and would rest his head on you even at the races while all the other horses were wound up going nuts.

    I think Grace needs to put in a lot of work into her and her handling process. She is definitely undereducated and thinks that I stick is going to stop her horse she is qualified enough and I would not encourage one of my students that is like her to work on this horse (Pony) like she is. That horse will be back to its habits next week and worse because it now associates the stick with something bad.! Just my opinion and I know no one was intentionally trying to hurt anyone.
