The big spiders indoors are Huntsman spiders. Very docile and harmless. Eat a lot of household pests like silverfish. We love 'em.

I was travelling around , working various jobs and at one stage I was living in a caravan in the Yarra Ranges. The first night I was there the van started to shake violently. Next day I asked the other blokes if they had felt the earth tremor. They said no. This happened first a few nights and I thought that the other guys were taking the piss.the Next time it happened I raced out with a torch. No one around. I was about to go back in when the van started to shake again. Looking underneath I noticed a wombat happily scratching his butt on the axle.from Mick.D.

I will happily watch spiders crawling about my house. They will strip your house of flies, silverfish, earwigs, slugs and snails, cockroaches... they protect! I had a pet spider which patrolled my house, up and over across the wall, and scuttled around the skirting board and another who nested in my bathroom, behind the toilet...
In Australia, every spider I see is ... an ex-spider... it will cease to be. I don't pack a spider identification chart.

The difference between Aussies and other countries is our first instinct isn't to kill things, just love and let live.

All native snakes are protected in Australia. That is why snake catching is a full time job here.

If you're going to encounter a critter, you're going to encounter one.
Lived and worked in quite a few places around the world, but this time I was in Thailand, in a town, less than 1km from the beach, stood in the open doorway of a bar, when something brushed against my foot. I was wearing flip flops at the time. It was a bit breezy so I thought it might have been a bit of rubbish. Looked down, bright green snake, sliding over and around my foot, into the bar.
    'Snake!'
Cue all the Thai bar staff, and patrons, immediately play the volcano game, where the floor is red hot lava, in a standing in place olympic high jump competition style, to get as far from the floor as possible. Except for Irish Mickey, pissed out of his gourd, who in slurred speech says 'I'll get it' and staggers towards the snake which was headed behind the bar at this point. Took four people to wrestle him away and out of the bar.
So yeah, critters. They'll find you in the most unlikeliest of places.

The best thing to do with boots, especially if you’re in or around Sydney is to throw your boots away from you, just a few feet in front of you. Anything that’s in there will run out and you’re not holding the boots when it happens. You definitely do not want to be holding your boots if a funnel web spider comes running out. It’s rare, but something we’re aware of in this part of Aus.
I’ve never seen one in the 23 years I’ve lived here, but I still treat my winter boots like they might have one in them.

I lived in Duffy's Forest (near Ku-ring-gai national park) and I dealt with them on a daily basis. They got in the horse's rugs, the firewood, in the bed, shoes everywhere. In winter when you'd throw a log into the fire, they'd run out across the floor. At night we'd just push our socks into the top of our boots to stop them getting in. Still make sure to give them a bash before putting them on in the morning. It's amazing what you can get used too 😂

The really big kangaroos are over 6 feet tall, have huge muscles, and are males. Called Boomers. They can kill you very easily. Mature kangaroos are cute but can be cantankerous.

Australians like to make a big deal about the wildlife, but none of our Aussie animals actually hunt people, except maybe the crocs. American wildlife is scarier. Bears and Cougars that will hunt, kill and eat you.

    • @infin8ee

One place I visit at night in connection with my job and there's a possum who lets out a blood curdling scream until I leave an apple or pear or a thick slice of water melon or grapes at the base of the tree he/she is in.
I thought Daniel being in construction would love the nail gun story.
