As a teacher of teenagers, this couldn’t happen soon enough. It’s not just the toxic environment, it’s the addiction. Kids were coming to school on 4 or 5 hours of sleep. You Tube is excluded from ban…. Exemptions will apply for health and education services including UA-cam, Messenger Kids, WhatsApp, Kids Helpline and Google Classroom. Yet will allow them to watch porn without restriction. This ban won't protect children and to be honest, whether children look at social media should be a parental issue not government.
Nobody 'needs' twitter or tiktok to survive. Kids do, however, need to be able to have a safe space at home where the outside world can't harrass them. These sort of bans make it difficult for the harrassment to happen.
There was onions on it, just following the great Bunnings law of having to have them under the sausage. But really, mustard and no tomato sauce, how is that even Australian.

Most Aussie parents agree with this law being passed, as young teens are addicted to snap chat and they are getting bullied or extorted for naked pic's.
Ryan, the law is because kids suicide after being bullied, and Paedophiles exploiting kids online, etc. If they stay off social media, maybe they can make friends from the real world.
It's also the data breaches. I hope that they are able to get something happening there like they say they want to do. Of course, the social media companies will fight it . Money is everything.
It's only banning kids from platforms where they can direct message another person with hate , religious , gender , pedophilia, insulting messaging so the cyber bullying and grooming can be stopped ,
Casuals here get higher pay to compensate for not having benefits. In fact the minimum wage for a casual worker is $30/hr and can be $75/hr if you're working on a public holiday say (250% loading).

From 1 grandmother to another, I'm with you all the way. I remember being that age, and the amount of times I went behind my parents back, and so did every other kid. People these days have forgotten all that, because it doesn't suit their narrative to admit it. I have 19 grandkids, with 14 of them being under the 16yr age limit, so it's going to be a huge relief for me to see this put in place - if it doesn't work, then we try something else, but I think this is a good place to start. Hugs 🤗
My 22 year old Son offered up his opinion on this to me (I didn’t even bring the subject up), saying he supports it, having seen in School how much it is used to bully.
In Australia, Colesworth and Aldi start specials on Wednesday. If you go early on Wednesday to get specials, they are still updating prices. Use to update overnight, but tight arse pricks. Nothing against staff, they do what they are rostered to do.
The fact that the opposition (who generally say no to everything regardless of merit) sided with the govt. on this one is a good indication as to the bill's acceptance. And those that criticize it probably never had one of their children bullied. Assuming they've ever had kids and if not have no skin in the game.
Poor Ryan, I sense your confusion at the Australian drive to simply make things illegal if they don't like things. Under 16s using social media - ban, Ferrero Rocher pricing not to your liking - ban. This is all popular policy... then we have the audacity to say we are a laidback country, its all so tiresome.
When your child is older you should respond to this again. You are a nice bloke but you are part of the machine at the moment. When someone you love is truly hurt by something online you will be thinking like Dad. You may think 18 is too young by then. Take care mate.
Australia is generally further left than the US, apart from the occasional outlier. For example, our conservative party, the Liberal Party, probably aligns closer to the moderate Democrats. We tend to lean towards regulation and are not dogmatic about individual rights like free speech. I have friends in Kentucky who struggle to understand. Gun control is another issue that had bipartisan support and passed within a few months after the Port Arthur shooting.
Just because it has been passed in both houses does not mean it is a law. It must be given Royal assent and so on. Over the decades, we've seen supermarkets change from operating "office type hours" M-F & Sat mornings & maybe 1 Night pw until 8pm > to the current hours like 7am~10pm (with some @ 24-hr stores). Shelves were mostly packed after "closing" to speed up the process, avoid customer inconvenience & lesson injuries (which helped reduce liability insurance). "Night staff" were mostly casuals & were paid a higher hourly rate, but didn't qualify for sick leave, holidays or LSL. Minors were also paid substantially less than adults. With changes to payroll awards, extended hours of trading, many "self-serve registers" & fewer staff @ each location - most staff are now required to "multi-skill" by packing shelves, be cashiers (when busy), help with cleanups & customer enquires. Unlike the USA, Aussies automatically qualify for Medicare (basic hospital cover) & employees now (on the whole) receive sick leave, annual leave & superannuation contributions (with a small number of exceptions).
Far as I'm concerned, great. Couldn't be happier. Social media use is crippling our kids. Surprised they haven't banned mobile phones from schools outright as well.

The entire criminal law is based on banning things. If you don't like anything being banned, does this mean you want an end to criminal law as well? I don't think that's what you want. I'm just wondering how they are going to implement this without giving the social media platforms even more information about the users.
I am against this ban, if I had no social media as a kid I would have been completely lonely because everyone in real life was bullying me, not on the internet.
I think it is a good thing. People can be harassed online and even for children the parents could not lawfully have it stopped because the source was via offshore service and outside of Australian law. Suicides have resulted.
I don't have any issue at all about U16s having their social media regulated. Kids should be outside building cubbies, playing sports etc. I'm sick to the core with seeing young kids ending their lives over bullying, and being groomed by another predator....I think these bans are worth a try, and if it doesn't work, then try something else, but we have to give something a go, and this seems like a good place to start
Ryan, as a bachelor myself, I sometimes cook a heap of snags on the barbie, fry up some onions, butter some bread and that's dinner, especially, if I can't be assed making an effort to cook. I don't have kids, but I left X and facebook a long time ago and never had snapchat or tiktok, but all I see and hear is it's full of nonsensical bullshit of dumbass people trying to make a buck, plus the pedophiles, bullying etc so I couldn't care less about these platforms. Btw, my life has been so enriched without these platforms, and I think once the kids learn they'll be much happier too. Life is not living on your phone 24/7!!
I agree with you about a lot of that but I didn't grow up with phones and social media, so I can't truly understand the pressure kids feel. I absolutely detest my phone and most times don't carry it with me. Enjoy your snags !
Hope the bread is high fibre and seeds at least, otherwise it's really lacking nutrients. You could easily add some kale and fortified yeast flakes to give it a boost. As another bachelor I often do that with baked beans, eggs, kale and yeast flakes on seedy toast with some spicy salsa and cracked pepper.
That property manager thingy is just for the agency, it’s not addressed to the public. Their clients would probably get a copy in their email box. Australian legislation protects both clients and real estate agencies in order to maximise the services available and minimise the costs to clients. The real estate market is very competitive so everything has to be monitored carefully under the laws.
Coles and Woolies: The difference is that they can’t pay their casual or part-time staff less than what the law requires, so they can only limit their hours. The other side of the coin is the rising cost of products in Australia and the management trying to keep their prices down for their customers. Laws also protect us from price gouging, so there’s not a lot of wiggle room!
I support it since UA-cam and similar educational resources aren't included. But I'll be very surprised if the restriction achieves much besides boosting VPN stocks

Lets pass 40 new laws through the house in one sitting. Why? Because parliament is shutting for the year and an election looms. Can't be see to have done nothing leading into it. Giving only 24 hours for public submissions to be considered is not how it was designed to work. Hi Stacey from Melbourne here, all the social media ban is doing is making it easier for our government to implement a law so that everyone has to have a digital ID and facial recognition set up if they want to continue using social media. It's all about control.
It’s clear social media is an addiction, we don’t give parents the right to choose if they give their kids cocaine. In this parents don’t get punished but the companies that don’t moderate and allow this to happen other ones that get punished.
@@JamoHenso So you're all for passing off parental responsibility and rights to the Government. Got it. So I guess you're also fine with leftie teachers pushing gender ideology on your kids and kids being told their parents don't need to know what they're being told at school. 🤔.
Deceptive Advertising: If a product was commonly available in the market at a fair & reasonable price and a particular company (ie Coles) stated in their advertising the NORMAL Price was $$$ (much more than everyone else) - but for a short time only or during this sale "we've slashed the price to X" (around the regular price everyone else is charging) in an effort to convince you to buy and buy now, then that is "deceptive advertising" and is currently illegal.

OH NO! Pay is pay, but a thank you goes a very LONG way towards the wellbeing of the individual being respected! In fact, there were times before the Great Depression (and sometimes since) when grateful bosses who had gone out of their way to get to know their employees and show gratitude to them, then found themselves unable to pay their workers when the crash occurred. They quickly discovered just how loyal those employees had become when they agreed to work for a reduced wage in order to keep the company afloat until the Depression had ended! @Ryan Was. Free speech is for adults (over 18). When my children were growing up, they were not given free unsupervised internet access and they did not have personal phones until they were over 16 and working. Australia needs to make this rule stronger.

Both sides passed the bill, no just one.
As a teacher of teenagers, this couldn’t happen soon enough. It’s not just the toxic environment, it’s the addiction. Kids were coming to school on 4 or 5 hours of sleep. And that is when they weren’t too upset to get to sleep. And from today’s paper I don’t think UA-cam is on the hit list.
As a result of this the EU is looking at bringing in restrictions as well. They already exist in Florida for under-14s. Hopefully this will be a call to action to the platforms to clean up their act.
I appreciate the input, from someone who sees the affects of social media on kids. Cheers.
YT isn't on the hit list. It's not a "chat" app (or something like that. I can't remember the term used). There is another app that isn't on the list, coz it's for more employment/education communication.
Its up to the parents not the State to police it.
@@lesflynn4455 thank you. And so many parents are right behind this legislation.
@@RobertOKeefe-z6p Unfortunately not all parents have that level of control over their kids’ online activities; nor do some of them have the e-literacy to manage it. And then there are the parents who just don’t give a damn …
Property managers work for real estate agents on behalf of property owners, making sure that the tenant{s} are maintaining the property in accordance with the rental agreement ie regular property inspections. They also make sure that any repairs to the property are carried out in a timely manner {for the tenants comfort}. I am lucky to have a great relationship with the property manager of the house that I have called home since October 2013 .
Doesn’t affect UA-cam
Hey Ryan, love ya, mate. If you ever try our snags on white bread, you'd understand. I've been to the US and can understand why you would think it's weird; but our white bread doesn't taste like cake, and is the perfect partner for a big, greasy snag.
Take care and have a great weekend, champion!
Australian here: UA-cam is exempt from the ban, as are other sources of media that are commonly used as educational services.
With under 16 laws I will have to prove that I am over 16 . BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING 🙈🙉🙊🗣
Do what the kids will do, VPN so much for the law
@@andrewsmith9162 You had to register your DOB when signing up for Facebook. We have already got digital ID in Australia, so what's the difference? Nothing.
As long as you're not doing anything sketchy on the net, then it will make no difference.
You're being paranoid about nothing
The property management segment was very funny 😂
You Tube is excluded from ban…. Most of it relates to Facebook etc
The laws, which will come into effect from late 2025, will bar under-16s from being able to access social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit and X. Exemptions will apply for health and education services including UA-cam, Messenger Kids, WhatsApp, Kids Helpline and Google Classroom.
One has to admit that the excluded especially Facebook and X are extremely toxic to young impressionable minds.
Yet will allow them to watch porn without restriction. This ban won't protect children and to be honest, whether children look at social media should be a parental issue not government.
How are they gonna verify the age, because I don’t want to provide my driver license to create any social media accounts
@@xaviergriffith This isn't about Children looking at Social Media, it's about Sites which force you to sign in order to access their material.
Nobody 'needs' twitter or tiktok to survive. Kids do, however, need to be able to have a safe space at home where the outside world can't harrass them. These sort of bans make it difficult for the harrassment to happen.
the sausage-in-bread would have butter if it was at home and probably have caramelised onions and tomato sauce as well as mustard
There was onions on it, just following the great Bunnings law of having to have them under the sausage. But really, mustard and no tomato sauce, how is that even Australian.
When your son is older you will change your mind
Chill out Ryan, as previously commented on, UA-cam is not effected. UA-cam is not social media. So , breath in and Relax. Should have read the Full Article, yer?
But kids under 16 can still access porn hub in Australia 😢
Can you be more stupid .
Oh who goes to Porn hub these days, Xvideos baby.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just like the North Koreans in Kursk and for the 1st time accessing porn? Finding TikTok and asking a 15 year old to send nude pic resulting in two arrest warrants by the ruZZians?
Most Aussie parents agree with this law being passed, as young teens are addicted to snap chat and they are getting bullied or extorted for naked pic's.
Ryan, the snag on a bit of bread, with your pick of condiments, is yummooo…you would love it!
Ryan, the law is because kids suicide after being bullied, and Paedophiles exploiting kids online, etc. If they stay off social media, maybe they can make friends from the real world.
That’s what they are saying is the reasoning behind it. Truth is that it’s only the beginning of something much more worrying.
It's also the data breaches. I hope that they are able to get something happening there like they say they want to do. Of course, the social media companies will fight it . Money is everything.
It's not about protecting children, who need to develop critical thinking and resilience, it's about controlling our thoughts!
@@jenniferharrison8915 ffs Karen
Mental health groups believe this would be quite bad for teenagers mental health
It's only banning kids from platforms where they can direct message another person with hate , religious , gender , pedophilia, insulting messaging so the cyber bullying and grooming can be stopped ,
The law was passed to protect people under the age from sexual exploitation/grooming and online bullying leading to self harm.
Casuals here get higher pay to compensate for not having benefits. In fact the minimum wage for a casual worker is $30/hr and can be $75/hr if you're working on a public holiday say (250% loading).
As a grandmother of a 7yr old and a 4yr old, I'm happy social media will be band. We have huge bullying problem in OZ with a very high number of suicides.........I'm just not sure it's going to work........Love from Adelaide South Australia ❤
For thousands of years kids have grown up without social media
and long may it continue!
Go Australia!
Musk does not have a right to interfer in our country.
Musk is doing no such thing, you are proving the point that some Australians are THICK. This is the Australian Government.
Why would you think 18 is to young, they can drink, vote, drive, get married etc lets ban everything.
A thing no one seems to have picked up on is that Government issued ID cannot be used to verify the kids ID. No birth certificate, passport, Centrelink card and so can be used. So what ID NOT issued by the Government can be used??
I'm 70 the dr took my driver's licence off me and the ID card they gave me is not accepted as ID and yet a drivers licence is even though I had to show all the same ID for photo card as I did for the drivers licence ..I am beyond pissed off
@@anniecarr8346 This is no good for you now but it may help other people. Tell them you lost your Drivers License and ask for a copy. They will give it to you. You then have two DL's. If they take one off you in the future then you have another...
Substitute the word “banned” with the word “restricted”. That’s more accurate.
"Property manager" - manages rental properties, collects rents etc. The clue is in the title.
There are already protections and school's choices in place, this is all about control and identification!
Apparently there were 70 or so bills pushed through in the final sitting of the year. I thought I was a bit of a procrastinator and last minute scrambler but apparently I've got nothing on our politicians.
Ryan, UA-cam is EXCLUDED from the ban!!
BBQ'd snags are nothing like tasteless hotdogs heated in hot water.
Snags shit all over them.
Spruiked = pronounced Sprooked
@@infin8ee Yeah same, I didn't have a nokia 3110 until I was 19 lol
There are "truth in advertising" laws in most places.
I used to leave a Freddo for my property manager when I had an inspection. Freddos are as good as currency here. 😊
I support it since UA-cam and similar educational resources aren't included. But I'll be very surprised if the restriction achieves much besides boosting VPN stocks
We already have a Mexican franchise in Australia, Guzman Y Gomez, which is owned by two Americans whose names are not Guzman and Gomez. They began with one store in Sydney in 2006 and as of September 2024 now have 199 stores and still growing. Queensland has 72 of those stores!
Lets pass 40 new laws through the house in one sitting. Why? Because parliament is shutting for the year and an election looms. Can't be see to have done nothing leading into it. Giving only 24 hours for public submissions to be considered is not how it was designed to work. Like this law or not the incompetency of our political parties in this country is laughable and if you don't understand why this ban is not going to work then you are part of the problem.
woolies and coles are profits before people , and are striving to have workerless stores as any human interaction means a loss in profits 😮
Kids can be vicious online. Personally im glad about the new bill. So many tragic stories of young teens taking their own life. Hopefully this will result in some peace and sanctuary time for vulnerable children
Hi Stacey from Melbourne here, all the social media ban is doing is making it easier for our government to implement a law so that everyone has to have a digital ID and facial recognition set up if they want to continue using social media. It's all about control.
Parents are the ones who should be in control of their kids Not the Government
You're right... give our children gallons of beer because I want to
It’s clear social media is an addiction, we don’t give parents the right to choose if they give their kids cocaine. In this parents don’t get punished but the companies that don’t moderate and allow this to happen other ones that get punished.
Parents are the people that lobbied for this to happen Karen
@@JamoHenso Guess it was parents who can't say no to their kids
Over here in Aoteroa New Zealand we are looking at this social media bill and thinking WTF, there must be better ways of educating young people than a ban At 18 alcohol is totally legal in both countries 😂
They should of made it 15 to match the age classification ratings already set in place
I don't know Ryan. Will it be worth the Social Media companies to comply? There's not that many of us so it might just be easier to cut us off all together.
You don’t get that kind of loyalty through money alone!
You are dead right about a price, must be a set price for a good amount of time before a sale price can be legit.
the program some time ago that scrutinzed certain institutions as being subpar and roped into courses and having 100% of that debt wiped is now being replaced with 20%, gee, what an improvement
Ryan, UA-cam won’t be included so you can stop fretting. "Messaging apps," "online gaming services" and "services with the primary purpose of supporting the health and education of end-users" will not fall under the ban, as well as sites like UA-cam that do not require users to log in to access the platform.”
It is law. Stops groomers. We were the first tobann smoking too remember. Others are doing the same. 16 is the legal age here. Any of the Murdock press or other media are liars.
Wont stop groomers, they no doubt already use VPN's, and Australia has not banned smoking.
Then everyone started vaping, then they banned that and now everyone just buys Chinese cigarettes which are worse than anything Australia produced and are like $20, while tobacconists just get firebombed every other day. Just absolute kneejerk policy thats made to look good to the base level punter and keep it off the books which does absolutely nothing to solve the actual problem. Kids will just use the multitude of VPNs which are available to them which they are actively using anyway except now they have a hidden IP address which means any illegal activity that may be geo/ISP blocked or somewhat policed is now untraceable.
They didn't ban smoking they taxed it to the point where people couldn't afford it except now we are being flooded with cheap tobacco and the govt gets less tax capitalism at its best
Property manager day > space travel and particle accelerators
They bought the law in as an antibulliing law
Too many young kids are being bullied into suicide
@Ryan Was. Free speech is for adults (over 18). When my children were growing up, they were not given free unsupervised internet access and they did not have personal phones until they were over 16 and working. Australia needs to make this rule stronger.
Not banning internet or youtube.
As a teacher I welcome this and as a parent and grandparent.
In a 2024 online census, 4 900 024 people on the Internet were under 16 years old. In 2025, apparently, they all grew up and only 1 225 024 people were under the age of 16.
as a single parent of 2 daughters, I think it is very good this is happening. As a family, we have been talking about this and my 12-year-old has already told me the other day she does not even want to be on Facebook which is nice to know. Both of them are too young anyway as a parent I will see how they are with understanding things when they are 16. At present, they are only 12 and 9. I also believe in not giving my kids a mobile phone why have one when you are at school from 9am to 3pm. My 12-year-old has (ASD) and I know that she understands a lot but then there is a lot she does not know and thinks she does. This is something I would have done anyway. And will keep it going till the end of both their schooling which is year 12 to stay off of social media. They both can have a mobile phone when they can buy and pay for it themself
The kids were going into dark places. We love our kids get used to it.
Chill Ryan, pretty sure does not include UA-cam. Personally I'm happy the children of Australia will not continue to compare themselves to influencers and other role models like the Kardashians😁
The snags at Bunnings the money you give go to a charity or a small sports club or something like that and they're quite nice when you walk around the store looking for something
The ban isn't going to affect you because UA-cam is not considered social media.

We don’t support or stand behind our governments choices
The property managers don’t own the houses they act on behalf of the landlords.
You have kinda missed the point Ryan. The white bread is just to hold the hot sausage, which is the important part. Where as with a hot dog the roll is necessary because the Frankfurt has very little taste of it's own.
It is "passes" but takes effect in mis or late 2025. Companies have until then to ensure this, or face hundreds of thousands of fines.
The social media providers have failed to address the issues surrounding youth bulling and suicide and other toxic behaviour. The government is doing its job protecting the people. In the US the government would have protected the billionaires. Free speech should not tolerate toxic behaviour.
Ryan, UA-cam is not included in the 16 SM sites. The law is targeted at the SM companies to verify ages. YP and parents can not be prosecuted. Under-13s are already banned on most sites but the SM platforms do nothing to police it. Many other countries are looking at the process and will bring in similar bans even if it just for under-13s.
