This is a scene from Satyajit Ray’s movie “ Pratidwandi “ ( means ‘ Adversary ‘ ). This is early ‘70s during Vietnam War when the whole world was anguished with high handed ness of USA and courage shown by the Vietnamese people. Even Marlon Brando had made a movie on Vietnam called ‘ Archipelago’! Ray’s Hero is asked what is the most notable event of the Century when he says it is the courage of Vietnamese people. The Interviewer is surprised and asks is it more noteworthy than say ‘man’s landing on moon’ which he says was expected but not Vietnamese courage against USA might!! The Interviewer asks are u a Communist ? To which he gives a famous reply “ You don’t have to be a Communist to appreciate courage of Vietnamese people” !! Ray was a genius movie maker !!

Also there was a fine satirical layer here towards UK's shameless effort to retain their imperialism delaying independence of so many countries they once ruled.

Thats a fake English accent.My dad studied at Jadavpur Univ in Calcutta.We hail from Kashmir .I showed him this clip and he said none of the accent actually is true.

Accent is an amalgamation of your exposure to different cultures, the people you grew up with, environment you grew up in and other influences..so people develop an accent over time. We are not born with it. It's very unique to a particular person and everybody has their own accent. "Translanctic" or "Indian" or any such categorical placement of an accent, I find it bizarre, yes you can have predominant influences of a particular way of speaking.. but based on that it's illogical to call it Fake or real.
Ray's movies had so many layers of meanings in them. The fact that we no longer have such movies today says a lot about present day society. While we have grown economically, we have degenerated intellectually.

Both kinds of films are relevant and needed. Only someone who is out of touch with the world outside his own class bubble will fail to realize this truth.
In the movie Siddhartha didn't get this job. Its not exactly because he is a communist but because interviewer understood he is not ordinary guy. He can think and the interviewer wants a dumb guy who can work without much complain like a machine. Most of the job interviewers look for this kind of people, with skills but not much thinking power.

@@souravdutta9203 just because the competition was not that much high. The population was half of what it is today. You will find more than 90% of the unemployed citizen to be at least graduate. Now everyone is pursuing PhD whereas great scientist, Satyandranath Bose didn't win a Nobel prize as he didn't have PhD degree. However he was equivalent to Einstein in terms of quantum physics and had a great contribution to the field. He even found Bose-Einstien condensate-the fifth form of matter apart from Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma in collaboration with Einstein. So, basically any degree nowadays is useless..it was also useless in the 1970s when Educated youths were unemployed..but the level of unemployment was not as much as it is today.

At that time teachers were educated in British period so the students got good knowledge of English. But now after left front's nasty decision of removing English as a language in primary level of education system modern generation of West Bengal lost the spark in English. I have seen that many a teachers cannot understand simple English written in office forms and as a result they cannot fill it properly.
@Tanmay Bhattacharya Bose himself was not conferred the Nobel prize while SEVEN Nobel Prizes were awarded for research related to S N Bose’s concepts of the Boson, Bose-Einstein statistics and Bose-Einstein condensate. The Nobel Committee expert Klein did not see Bose’s work worthy enough to achieve that one. Really unfortunate !!

Beautiful. Satyajit Ray all the way. How well he portrayed the short sightedness, inability, cowardice, and the common ness of people selected to the chair.

Vedantt29 .... fascinating opportunities to bring in fresh and open minds in our systems. But we all botch that up.
Yeah..he just got rejected for praising Vietnam war over landing on the Moon(although Moon's topic is still debatable). One group says that Apollo 11 landed on moon and the other says that the photo was captured in studio as the flag was wavering. And at last he also replied that he is not a communist, btw I don't know what job has to do with someone's ideological belief. I mean, he had the knowledge and all that specifications that the job required.
Well. He put the interviewer's perspective in the most minimalist way. Communists were, and still are, a menace. Communists singlehandedly shut down 90% of factories in West Bengal. Ray was not oblivious to this. So he put a very succinct question from the interviewer's point of view. It was only natural that any interviewer would be suspicious of a candidate with leftist leanings. Ray did a brilliant job in the interview by showing up both three sides with minimalist elegance. An emotional and hopeful youth seeking a job, a cautious and conservative employer and the turbulent political background of the time.

Wow..is all I could say after watching this scene. I cannot fathom the artistic and intellectual depth of Mr. Ray, just to say what a fine Director would be gross understatement.
I believe Ray itself is an institution where you can learn all the skills of film making, Story,Script, Dialogue delivery, Camera work, BGM, etc .We should have a dedicated world class Film University named after him (although SRFTI is there) where ppl can learn his way of film making and keep the legacy alive.
One can watch this interview seen again and again and admire Ray's brilliance. There can never be another Satyajit Ray for sure.
He was legend, no doubt. Even after 50+ years, this interview is so relevant and heart touching to me. Questions, answers, pause, expression, camera movement, zooming- all hardly say it is a movie, rather a footage of an interview.

I doubt what are we even gonna pass to our future generations .... culture we have lost... 'Aesthetic appeal of nature' we are loosing every day.... purity of language we have left behind......and art or an attribute called 'handmade', remains confined for wealthy strata because middle and lower class have no time for thinking how they are making the word - 'bearing', a synonym of living!

@@aryathehonored আঁতেল দের ঔপনিবেশিক মানুষিকতা মজ্জায় মজ্জায় রয়েছে। হ্যাঁ কোনও ভাষা একটু properly উচ্চারণ করলে শুনতে একটু ভালো লাগে এই যা কিন্তু একটি বিদেশী ভাষার উচ্চারণ এর ভঙ্গিমার সাথে বুদ্ধিমত্তা, intellect কে যুক্ত করাটা শুধু বোকামি ই নয় বরং অবচেতন স্তরে সেই বিদেশী culture টির সামনে নিজের প্রকৃত পরিচয় এর সম্পর্কে inferiority complex কেই মেলে ধরা হয়। বিশেষ করে কলকাতার urban culture এর মধ্যে এই inferiority complex টি অত্যন্ত বেশী চোখে পড়ে কারণ এটি একটি বৃটিশ নির্মিত সংস্কৃতি। কত european দেশ english উচ্চারণ তো দূর english কেই কোনও বিশেষ মর্যাদা দেয় না। বুঝতে পারি যে গোলামীর রেশ তো থেকে যাবেই , colonialism প্রভাবিত শিক্ষা ব্যবস্থাই তো চলে এসেছে বিগত 70 বছর ধরে। কত উচ্চশিক্ষিত ব্যক্তি ই নিজের রাজ্যের উচ্চারন এর টান অনুযায়ীই ইংরেজি উচ্চারন করে কোনও দ্বিধাবোধ ছাড়াই, কিন্তু কত শিক্ষিত আঁতেল রয়েছে যাদের সবই শেখানো গেলো শুধু ভারতীয়তা ছাড়া।

Class act !Having had a fleeting but memorable acquaintance with Sundor-da(Dhritiman) and his wife Ammu once upon a time, I know for a fact that the accent was never a fake.Nothing about him is.
This was the opening sequence of the film "Pratidwandi" ("The Adversary", also sometimes known as "Siddhartha and the city"). This was Dhritiman Chatterjee's (the interviewee in the video) debut movie. His character's name was Siddhartha Chatterjee in the film.
The final scene in the movie has a bird's call which Satyajit Ray recorded for real in a forest many years before shooting this film and used it here.

I have been overwhelmed by their outstanding conversation what a transparent pronunciation and cristal accent. They spoke like native speakers. Undoubtedly they were well educated people. from my perspective they deserve compliment.

The scene where the protagonist is delivering a soliloquy on Vietnam war, the camera panned in effortlessly, unlike the other Bollywood movies. I saw such camera work and direction in Godfather movies!

This kind of deep intellectual dialogue, you will only get in Bengali movies, particularly in Satyajit Ray movies....

In the Balachander’s movie AAKALI RAJYAM, Kamal Hassan gets interviewed by the panel, and his attitude will be similar. Must have been inspired by this
Deeply meaningful movie. Whose independence ? was a piercing counter question for which interviewer probably was not prepared or he was not expecting it. Communist movement was gathering momentum in Bengal in those days and an intellectual like Ray could not dissociate himself from it. There is an enigma attached to Satyajit Ray, whether he really supported communism in it's Russian version where trade unions once rule the roost.

Let me correct you all a little bit, the question about Moon's weight was from a different movie from Satyajit Roy, search "Job interview scene from Satyajit Ray's 'The Middle Man' (1975)".But yes it was from the same trilogy, Pratidwandi (The Adversary) (1970),Seemabaddha (Company Limited) (1971) & Jana Aranya (The Middleman) (1976) all 3 are classic Masterpeice

The accent is waooooo .
Its incredible that these actors, who do not have the access to constant streaming of content spoken by native English speakers as we do today thanks to the deregularized telecom industry, spoke the language with such finesse almost like it is their second nature. For God's sake, their diphthongs are on point- a feature rarely found in Indian languages.
Because the closer (back in time) you go towards Independence, the only English Bengalees knew was correct English, not Indianised English

Heard about the term decoloniality vis-a-vis ngugi, the African scholar? It talks about ways in which the sacrosanct contours of English language and its enunciatory fields are to be deconstructed by the natives of erstwhile colonial nations to dismantle their status quo. Here speaking English in a Caribbean way or a indianized way is actually a tool to reclaim agency and to rewrite the Masters (colonial) lingo in newer ways... Gayatri Spivak often uses indianized versions of words (iskul) to a Western audience just to dismantle the status quo of the white master.

then there was at least patience in every educated person to listen to the other side... which lead to fruitful conversation. I know it's predecided dialogue but still, there was an opinion to someone that educated. nowadays technology made us impatient enough that we do think we are wasting our time doing random things. why?

But it was shot during 1970 a year before Bangladesh was liberated. Btw why Vietnam war was more preferable is answered in this scene by Siddhartha. Simply, it was the exhibition of courage and bravery by the peasants who had no warfare skills, no artillery, no armaments. And one do not needs to be a Leftist to admire that but needs to be a keen observer which he might have acquired as he was a student of medicine and we need keen observation skills to understand biology.
What a dialogue what a logic what an acting. Satyajit is the god of filmmaking.

The best past of that video is the part when the question came -"Are you a communist"..this has created a illusion of mind reading of the audience.

2.Seemabaddha
3.Jana Aranya
All of them are great works. Something which is most fascinating about this trilogy is an ambiguous Black/Dark humour!!!

the beautiful English he spoke bereft of colonial English accent but carrying the subtilty of Hindi/Bengali is so soothing. Over years we have forgot to talk slowly. the melody of our mother tongues are lost. We have become more aggressive. Thus, this tone-deaf accent we have got.

Ray was far far ahead of his time and his genius was unique. No other filmmaker in India could think of making films on thw subject which he chose to make..Ray was the son of legendary poet Sukumar Ray and part of his early education was in Shantiniketan when Tagore was still alive. These factors must have shaped his sense of art, literature and finally coupled with his own genius, Ray was a rare personaity ...

Pratidwandi was very intriguing, the ending was something i couldn't understand when i first saw it. now after graduating i see what it meant. the dilemmas the protagonist faces in every moment of the film is the real adversary.

This video certified how much political this movie is.... Though embedded inside thin layers and most probably could not be identified by many below a certain intellect level, still politics played a major and subtle role in contemporary Bengali movies by the masters. It proves a man of his stature can not be apolitical towards his art!
The movie is based on a novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay which also has this same question in almost verbatim. Of course books of that time reflected the political environment of the country and the world and naturally cinemas based on the same books would also represent that.

Ray's movies has got unique approach to be relatable and realistic and this dialogue of Pratidwandi is the proof.

till few decades after Independence, Indians were in habit of speaking English in British accent because they had seen british people speaking that way. Today we don't speak like that.
Especially in that time-specific British dialect, had it been today, all we'd be left with probably is 'Oi mate, its the bloody bri'ish accent'!!
But it's far better "You know.. You know... in between each sentences"!!
Even today's working class British people don't have that elegance, forget about today's India.
