You're absolutely right. I tried to listen to this while doing a simple internet search. Fail. I had to pause the video, finish my search, then go back and watch your video from the beginning lol

Absolutely spot on. Seems common sense that it is better to give a task your full attention and do a thorough job. The problem is that often we have to keep many plates spinning, which is fine as long as there is recognition that a half-arsed job is likely to be done on all of them.

      100%
      Awareness is key.
If something is worth doing. It's worth doing right.

As someone who works in IT, I've been trying to explain this to people for years. Our brains are just like computers. If you only have a single CPU in your computer, it's just not physically possible for it to multitask. What it does is implement a process called "thread-switching" that simply allows it to alternate between processing tasks quickly enough to give the illusion of multitasking. It's less relevant nowadays as we have CPUs with several cores, which gives them multiple processing threads, so they actually CAN multitask, but for humans, we only have one brain, which equates to a single processing thread.
This is one of the main reasons that learning an instrument is so difficult for humans, takes a lot of practice to get good at, and why training muscle memory is so important. If you're trying to pay attention to technique, remember what you're supposed to be playing, whilst trying to stay in the pocket with a band all at the same time, your performance will be patchy or the whole thing will just fall apart.

I'm workin in IT too, totally agree about the "age of digital distraction" ‼️point.
You can't improve on every skill at once - only a small number of persons are that gifted and talented by nature.
Drum technics fascinate me every time.
I love the Jonathan Sugarfoot Moffett reactions on this channel, still hoping to see a reaction to his DRUMEO 2023 "BILLIE JEAN" version - its beyond any talent - runnin' like a clockwork, insane masterclass 🥁

💯 Andrew. The data that corroborates this is undeniable. It can also elevate stress levels (trying to multitask), which is toxic. Great post! 🤘

You’re getting into my wheelhouse here.
Clinical field for 25+ years. I could bore you to death with research on brain chemistry and studies on stuff like “multitasking.” It’s not real, nor is it possible.
Funny thing is while you’re definitely right and many decades of research back you up, I can almost guarantee you’ll hear from MANY swearing “they’re different.”

Oh I KNOW people who are 'different'/special.
They'll flex about epic productivity because they multitask. lol

Always appreciate your takes. Imo it very much depends on how much these multiple things coalesce with each other. If you're learning a new song, improvising with others or practicing to recordings are you not equally splitting your focus between listening and playing? As someone with over 30 years of playing, recording and performing, I can tell you I've never played a pad or the drums without accompanying music of some sort. I feel it hasn't hurt my development at all. Quite the opposite. I also feel like we're all a bit different, so it's hard for me to generalize. Cheers.
