#Subaru #exhaust #q300
I know you guys are going to have a lot to say in the comments on this video...
Here are a couple questions I expect people to ask:
1. "Full exhaust setup?" GrimmSpeed Catted Jpipe + Invidia Q300 Catback
2. "Are you tuned?" My car is Pro/Dynotuned. No, this is not a Burble/Crackle tune, just a standard one.
3. "Mod list?" If you want a full list of mods, see our previous videos.
4. "How is the drone?" It's pretty much gone at highway speeds with this setup!
5. "What's the difference between R400 and Q300?" Q300 has larger mufflers and double walled tips.
I love my Q300! I have a son with autism and he is sensitive to loud noises and this exhaust give the best of both worlds. You will definitely hear it when u get on it. No regrets here.
The r400 looks great. But I honestly think the FA doesn’t sound great with it. Now if it had the subie rumble, That’s a different story.
Nothing wrong with going for a more adult tone while driving around. 18 year old me wants more loud. 30 year old me wants more quiet.
I like the change.
This is awesome, I was trying to find a Q300 vs R400 setup and to get it in the same car is outstanding!
I think I’m after a “gentleman’s exhaust” so now it’s between this and the grimmspeed
Q300 is a gentlemans exhaust. If I wanted quieter it would prob be my first choice 👍
No it isn’t. Fujitsubo takes that crown.
Good video man I just bought a Q300 for my 2020 WRX, nearly mid 30’s to old for heaps of noise and the FA doesn’t sound that brilliant anyway haha. With install, you recommend putting the Y pipe and mid pipe together before getting under the car?
Yes! Doing that makes it easier. Also, put the hangers on the exhaust first, that makes it easier
Thank you for doing this. No need to bring attention to myself, when my driving is bad enough. LOL
I had the R400 installed on 2019 STI but it was a little too much on the freeway . The drone was obnoxiously annoying and having a conversation was next to impossible. That experience lasted maybe 2 . I replaced it with the Cobb stainless steel and I haven’t sacrificed losing the tones it a little more enjoyable when diving , I can talk or listen to music with any problems.
Great video. I am sure my neighbors would want me to make the change lol
😂😂😂
I don't blame you a bit. We have the Grimmspeed catted Jpipe, stock mid pipe(which is unresonated) and the remark muffler deletes. Tons of turbo whistle and cold starts were pretty much straight piped loud. Rev matched down shifts were loud crackle pops... obnoxious teenager stuff. Not very neighborhood friendly and like you said, conversations when cruising were a shouting affair. I was researching muffled axlebacks and decided to replace the last piece of OEM pipe with a 3" stainless resonated mid pipe. Everyone told me it wouldn't quiet it down, just change the tone to be deeper. They were all wrong. It got deeper, turbo whistle isn't as loud which is a little bummer but you still hear it but the thing got a hell of a lot quiter. We no longer feel guilty about early morning cold starts and it no longer sounds ricey even with no mufflers at all. It honestly sounds deeper and less high pitched than that Q300 setup.
i did the exactly the same
Soon finished working on the exhaust for my 01 bugeye WRX which I recently got. It had lost a couple flanges and the downpipe was leaking. Fixed and put the oem downpipe with cat back on for now. When that was all good I noticed a leak in the up-pipe too, so I got a $50 used oem catted up-pipe which I just gutted and is about to replace now. Otherwise 100% stock.
Alright
Hmm. This is very interesting and info on both exhausts. Had my WRX for a year now still running stock exhaust. Have a custom one on my Forester XT. Mrs does not like it as its too loud, so ive kept the WRX silent for weekend drives. Maybe in future might get the Q300.
Love the content brother . I watch your videos all the time. I love the R400 quad mufflers but i dnt like the single rolled tips. I prefer the double rolled Q300 tips. Do you know if putting the Q300 tips on the R400 set up is possible?
I agree with you!! The tips are not removable on these, so you'd have to cut and weld them.
How many miles you rocking on your wrx now? I personally love a more subtle setup, I wana hear it when I'm actually getting on it not early in the morning when I leaving for work.
62k miles! This setup is definitely a lot more incognito when casually cruising or on start-up, but opens up when you get on power.
Hey guys. Love the channel. I just installed an R400 and yah it's a bit too loud for me. I'd rather not purchase an entire cat back exhaust again. Just wondering if you have any advice for me to make it quieter. Would putting the Q300 mufflers on it do anything? Would they fit the same Y-pipe?
Yes the Q300 and r400 use the same midpipe and y pipe! Just the axleback section is different! If you can find someone selling a used q300 that's a good option
Hey seen your video and have the r400 love them but lately the drone has been killing me thinking of switching to the q300 how have you liked them I’m guessing no drone but can you still hear a deeper tone over stock
Yes for sure. Once the q300 is broken in, you still get a super deep tone and good volume on the upper end when WOT!
I have the Q300 on my bugeye, obviously completely different sound being EJ205 and single exit but I love the "stealth" aspect of it. It makes plenty noise but doesn't attract unwanted attention 🚔
You have a 2litre EJ!? How!?
@@ianholmquist8492 The 2002-2005 generation WRX came with the EJ205. 2.0L turbo engine. I actually have two EJ205s lol one is the original engine that is still in the car at 161,000 miles and another I just recently got that I am going to build for 400-450whp
Supposedly the Cobb cat-back is one of quietest aftermarket exhausts. I've got the Cobb catted/resonated J-pipe with a resonated Perrin cat-back and there still is some minor acceleration drone on the highway, but it's not too bad.
Sound proofing the trunk helps
How much louder is the r400 turboback compared to the q300 turboback? Cheers
Depends on if you have a jpipe/downpipe. If you just have the catback, the r400 is a little louder, maybe a little more drone. If you have a jpipe, the r400 is definitely louder and has more drone. It's still not crazy loud, but probably a bit much for most people. R400 with stock jpipe is great though
@@WRXGarage yeah both have downpipes. Does the r400 with the dpipe sound cleaner than the q300?
I’m not disappointed
Still sounds cool. Do you have aftermarket Headers? I have KillerB headers, Cobb Catted downpipe and R400. I can't drive by a cop without getting stared at or pulled over. Also Highway drone is obnoxious. Looking to switch to Q300 or similar.
Stock headers! The q300 is definitely a lot more stealthy than the r400.
With Tomei UEL headers and up pipe and an invidia catted downpipe with the stock exhaust it rumbles quietly but when you step on it you wouldn't know it was the stock exhaust.
I currently have muffler deletes, but I ordered the Q300 to go with my Grimmspeed J-Pipe, getting them both installed and dynoed in a couple months :). I'm grateful for your video man, I think it sounds great (not too loud, not too raspy). How is the drone? Thanks again! - Mike
Drone is very very minimal, not very noticeable at all
@@WRXGarage thanks! My Q300 is on backorder still so I considered going with a Tomei but I think the Q300 will be worth the wait. I appreciate your vid’s and reply
I love my Q300 great choice man!
Can we see a WRX Garage track day or drag strip day video? Want to see some of these FA's driven hard!
How much louder is the Q300 compared to stock? and how much louder is it on the inside? I kind of like the quiet of the stock on the inside for a daily driver. But I want a bit more sound when I push it.
I would say the q300 is slightly louder then stock. I would rate stock 1/10 for loud and q300 2.5/10 for loudness. Q400 would be a 5/10. Axelback is prob 6/10 and any single exit will be the loudest like tomei
Sounds amazing! I wonder how this setup compares to the R400 with the stock down pipe
🤔🤔🤔🤔 maybe we should make a video on that
Was going to ask this same question! I have an R400 with stock downpipe at the moment, I'm curious if Q300+DP is around the same volume/drone. Would be real interesting. Btw the change is great, totally understand wanting quieter exhaust, the R400 even with no DP can be a little obnoxious at times.
I'm lookin for a new catback system... something aggressive not quiet but not too droney... which exhaust system would you recommend
Invidia R400!
@@WRXGarage oh I see... I have ppl in the fb groups I'm in say r400 or q300... right now I have the stock catback and have the remark deletes on her where she's loud and droney and sounds aggressive... I still want her to sound aggressive but I want to get rid of the stock exhaust system and go aftermarket
R400 is perfect then. If you want to add a jpipe/downpipe, I'd recommend q300 instead.
R400 with stock jpipe should be the perfect setup for you!
@@WRXGarage so with the J pipe would that make her sound louder or would it have that deep sti rumble??? I have the base wrx and just been building her up for the last 3 yrs (mostly exterior) but I'm going all out this yr
The STI rumble comes from the equal length headers, not from the exhaust! Aftermarket jpipe's on the WRX will definitely make the exhaust louder, but also improve the tone/deepness, as long as you pair it with a resonated catback. The r400 and q300 are both resonated.
Reduced chance of getting pulled over is a win 😅
W
I think it sounds perfect tbh lol what made you go with this vs the Grimm speed exhaust?
The 4" tips! They fill the exhaust cutouts way better IMO.
I just recently got the grimmspeed non resonated and let me tell you i am not happy with it. It is so quiet from the outside. The inside the car sounds great. You can hardly hear any pops while down shifting, and when it pops you get 1 pop. I have a cobb catted j pipe aswell
@@socialscaper312 you’re talking about grimmspeed catback not being loud or the grimmspeed downpipe ? Cuz the grimmspeed downpipe absolutely pops and loud
I wish I had seen this video before installing the R400 on my 2020 STI. The drone and noise levels inside the car are absolutely ridiculous for a daily driver. You can control it some degree just city driving by keeping it in a higher gear (still obnoxious though) but on the highway you're stuck with whatever it's throwing at you. I just installed it last Saturday (5 days ago) and ordered the Q300 on Sunday. - the very next day! It's that bad. My understanding now is that it's actually significantly worse on the STI than the WRX - the drone inside the car specifically. Can't wait to get the R400 off my car. It's shame because it actually sounds really good otherwise - it's just not for me.
Thank! I just found my new exhaust
😎 the exhaust is now fully broken in and sounds absolutely amazing
All of invidias exhausts are a bit too quiet for me. Had to go with the tomei over invidia especially with the weight savings.
If only they made a dual or quad outlet.
@@axeya366 I like the single exit. The dual exit I dislike the most. The quad exit I do like also. If I hadn't got a tomei I would have got an ets extreme.
There are so many personal and valid reasons to do this. Will a Grimmspeed J pipe work with my Subaru factory catback exhaust? If yes, probably not as loud as the R400.
Is the q300 louder then a stock muffler and resonator delete? Also, is a q300 vs r400 a big difference? Wilhich one is louder?
Yes q300 is def louder than stock. R400 is louder than q300. They are the same design, but the r400 has smaller mufflers
Is there any axle backs that bolt up right to the invidia y pipe? I have an r400 but with an aftermarket j pipe the drone is horrendous, can’t find anyone in my area to swap axle backs from a q300
You'd have to find 2.5" diameter axlebacks with mufflers. Check nameless, they might have something
I've got the same setup but with the turboxs catted j pipe yours seems a little louder maybe its just the video lol but deff a great setup still can hear the exhaust but not droney or annoying in any way. The q300 with stock j pipe is too quiet so if you plan on getting just a catback get a r400
Do you guys think the brand of intake makes a big difference on hp gains ? Finally got accesport what a difference omg!! Do reccomend pro tune or e tune ?
Brand of intake doesn't make much difference in power unless you're full bolt on with turbo/headers. However, some designs are inconsistent.. most tuners like COBB or GrimmSpeed
Any fitment issues ?
It sounds good. I was originally going to go with a full Grimmspeed turbo back for a similar sound. Went with an MAP catted with ETS Extreme cat back no resonator no mufflers. LOL. It's loud and it's drones but I'm enjoying it for the time being. The car is my toy and I'm not concerned about having conversations in it. That said, if I ever get tired of it I can add mufflers!
How do you like the MAP catted, it is two piece, yes?
@@747Durango Yes it's a two piece. The quality is outstanding and I like the flex pipe built in. Especially since there's no flex pipe on the catback I'm using. There's also a spot to bolt your ground strap back on.
@@skyraidfpv6753 Thanks for the feedback. I just bought MAP CAI and AP. Are you running their Stage 2 map and how is that going?
@@747Durango I'm running MAP's Stage 2 E30 OTS tune. It's great. AF learning is a bit high in the negatives at idle but other than that I'm showing good numbers on the AP. This is just temporary until I get a pro or etune.
@@skyraidfpv6753 Good to know so thanks for the details. I am strongly considering this same path. MAP has been good to deal with.
Why is there no subaru rumble? Im looking at getting the q300 turbo back exhaust. Bad idea if i want the rumble???
It’s the motor. The FA20 motor in the wrx has equal length headers that makes it sound like a civic where the EJ in the STI has unequal length headers which gives it that rumble. I own the FA and I was stupid and thought I would have rumble and was sad when I didn’t
@@aaroncorreia8507 I have since learnt this, and am extremely please with my turbo back Q300 with high flow cat. It could be a little louder on idle but it has a great sound and rumbles amazingly at 1500-2000 rpm. Full throttle its a little throaty but not too obnoxious 😆 very happy
@@AdamsWorld84 Just wanted to mention I installed Tomei UEL headers and up pipe and an invidia high-flow catted downpipe and used a stepdown adapter to fit the original STI exhaust on my 2015. It sounds fantastic. But when I upgrade it'll be the q300.
@@Zkt_Zkt Ive got the quad tip q300 exhaust now with high flow cat and I'm quite happy, not too obnoxious while cruising and decently loud on full throttle! The rumble is beyond addictive.
Will this setup sound like the Grimmspeed turboback exhaust? I know it's the same jpipe just different catback.
Very similar! The construction of the invidia and GS catbacks are similar so I bet they'd sound alike.
Would the Q300 be ridiculously quiet if you didn’t have the jpipe?
No, still significantly louder than stock.. but definitely not as loud as other cat back options.
@@WRXGarage Interesting. Thanks!
is your grimmspeed j pipe resonated or non resonated?
Non resonated
Do need a tune for a J- pipe ?
Yes 100%!
Thanks
Is there any droning @ 80mph+?
Not at all!
Is this full exhaust Q300?
Invidia Q300 + GrimmSpeed catted jpipe
@@WRXGarage thank you
Are you selling the r400
:( already sold!
Turn up the music if you don’t want the drone on the highway lol
Some people want to be able to speak to their friends/family while driving or talk on a phone using the hands free mic in the car. I used to like the rowdy loud stuff but it gets old.
still too loud
Sell me your r400 plz
