I purchased the car (WRX 2016) from a 64 year old bloke who kept it in really good condition with the only mods being a Q300 catback exhaust. After 12months of a silent though nice sounding exhaust, I tap into my younger racer boi dreams and make it a bit louder.
In this video, I explain the differences between a baffled (or turbo type) and a straight through type exhaust muffler. The science behind this (as with all car things) is pretty amazing. Often in school we learn about sound waves and a lot of other sciencey things that make no sense to us (including myself when I was a kid), which is why I make these videos. Science is applied so wonderfully to many aspects of our lives, especially in a car. Even if you don't like cars or car sounds, we often take for granted to science that engineers apply to factory exhaust systems as to keep the car noise to a minimum, and to not annoy us while we're driving.
The science of mufflers and sound that I explain in this video is VERY brief and may take a bit of prior knowledge on sound to understand. The theory or science is applied to exhaust mufflers and in particular, the Invidia Q300 and R400 in this situation.

How much drone does the r400 have going like 70? Just wondering for the little ones ears
@@brandonloiselle1287 70 km/h? I drive it daily on the motorway at 100+ km/hr. To me there's no drone, I've had passengers and we're able to have a regular conversation without yelling at each other. I also have an 11y/o brother who reckons its not too loud. Not sure I can comment on how your kids may find it.

I think it sounds much better this way. I feel like not enough people pay attention to the tone, most just want a loud ass car. Choosing a quality system will always be better than straight pipe.

I got my WRX in November of last year and I immediately picked up the R400 Black tips after I saw this vid because I was on the fence between the Q300 and R400. Glad I picked it up now just waiting on a down pipe ether carb cert from Cobb if not Invidia Catted Jpipe but I’m also considering Grimspeed.

He's spot on. R400 sounds great on a stock WRX. My 2019 WRX has Killer B headers and Cobb catted J Pipe so the R400 is obnoxiously loud on my car. It instantly summons every cop in a 1 mile radius every time I step on it. Ordering the Q300 so I can actually drive the car. Looking forward to being able to hear the stereo or have a conversation with my passenger without yelling at each other.

Thanks for putting this together! I'm right on the fence between between the Q300 and R400. So long as I can drive it on the highway without an overbearing drone (I don't mind if I can hear it a little bit, obviously) then I think I should go with the R400

I had the r400 and it is way to much drone, bought the MA performance catback and it’s perfect! IMO.

@@jptothetree ya I bought the r400 and it does sound good but if someone says at crushing speeds it don’t drone pretty bad is crazy! I guess if you got your radio up loud enough maybe. But I had to ditch it for something that sounds good and deep when spirited driving but smooth when cruising. Just an opinion though.

I had to splice into my harness without this. Its pretty cheap, considering how much money you save ordering the brake light off aliexpress.
Love my r400! Idk if you have a J-Pipe yet, but it doesn't get much louder, and if there is any sort of drone, it almost goes completely away. You're spot on... the deep bassy sound is what I enjoy the most. And you CAN drive it somewhat quietly lol but... who does that?! Hahaha enjoy! Awesome videoA

im using borla catback with my 2020 wrx but i might change to the r400 i'll decide after i get my cobb tuning
Waiting on mine now, Also Going from the Q300 to R400,(Just went stage 1+) just has a much better sound and deeper tone. I like the smaller size of the muffler on the R400 too. not as gnarly as a straight pipe but you def get a little more rumble. They have a VERY SIMILAR sound, but the R400 is just a little deeper and louder(because of the smaller muffler), If it were in tiers of sound id say it goes Stock, Q300, then R400.
I think what impresses me most is you doing this on your back lol! Just wait till you add an Intake! Gonna sound even better!

Cheers mate!! The Q300 catback is barely any louder than the stock exhaust. If you're just going catback then go Q300. You can barely hear the Q300 catback even when you're on full boost and throttle.
This is interesting, you got my attention. I have 2019 WRX currently stock exhaust. Although i would like to get one in future still undecided yet. Yes the wife is a bit ehhh NO. Why because we also have a Forester XT with an aftermarket exhaust and she knows or hears it all. So back to the WRX and Q300 is quiet but maybe even the R400 or Tomei.

I've always been a big fan of the low noise of the Q300 but the R400 get a nicer tone with not a lot volume (to my ears) I'd love a comparison of these 2 to the N1 model
I agree! Tho i have put in the jpipe recently (check out the video on my channel) and the R400 turbo back does get quite droney... i might have to do something about it.
I do plan on possibly going back to the Q300 for the turboback and will do the Q300 vs R400 turboback comparison.

That sound slike a great plan mate, I reckon you should go R400. You can check out my latest video to see the full turbo back vs cat back comparison for the R400. The down pipe doesn't make it that much louder, but does change the tone of the exhaust.
I do have aftermarket rims and tyres, video on that in the coming months too but you can see bits of the wheel in my latest video.

Does the CVT in the WRX actually have nice simulated revs in the simulated gear ratios or does it just sound like a very loud cow Mooooing like my 2019 Crosstrek does? If so I'd recommend a much BIGGER muffler for your car....... And maybe you could play cool race-car sounds MP3s when you drive. Would definitely be a lot cheaper.

Trick is to put it into sports mode (simulates 5 gears) Sports# (8 gears) - then manual and use the paddle shifters
Ended up getting a r400 catback, pw cold air intake and a protune
During cruising speeds is it loud? I have the SPT exhaust but I want a slight upgrade in sound.
Not loud, but can definitely hear whats going on.
What rpms are you starting at to build boost for the turbo flutter? Would highly recommend waiting until at least 2800rpms to build boost.
Hey mate. Boost kicks in really early between 2000-2500. BOV doesnt go psh psh until over 3000-3500 rpm. Thanks for watching
@@MrDuongTV1 sorry bout the real late response i had the response typed out and thought i hit send before closing youtube. But, i work at the same dealership i bought my 21 at back in october last year and i talk to subaru techs everyday im here and I’ll ask questions here and there trying to learn about my car. One of the more important things multiple techs have told me about 15+ wrx’s was to not build boost prior to around 2700-2800rpm because it can lead to blowing it up if too much pressure builds in it and can’t escape fast enough. Especially if you’re going uphill. And even if you only install a bov you want to get it properly tuned or you’re going to ruin the car over time, that was another thing they were pretty serious about.

At this point, the car only had a cold air intake, GFB BOV, the catbacks and a tune! I've done a lot more to it since the video was released, check it out on the channel.

Hey mate. Yeah, the previous owner had done the catback. There's a stock downpipe to catback adaptor, i think its also from invidia. Other brands do it too

I have a nameless 5in axle back on my sti and it’s definitely louder than a q300. I’d say it’s between the q300 and r400.
5" and more quiet than r400?! Wow. How are you finding the mod? Any drone or annoying sounds?
Science with Mr Duong I like it, fitment on the 19-21was a lil off, I used one gasket on one side and needed 2 on the other to stop any exhaust leaks, and with the nameless hangers the tips are about 1/4 in from touching the bumper. It sounds good very deep, zero drone. It got rid of the low rpm bassy booming sound the stock exhaust had, and at cruising speeds in 4-6th it’s silent unless getting on it. Perfect for CA haven’t had any cops bother me at all.

@@R0KU Gday mate. I had a custom dyno tune done every time I needed a tune. The best way to go is a dyno tune.

R400 is better, but to me all Invidia exhausts are too muffled/restrictive sounding. Tomei is much better. Borla sounds pretty good too. Otherwise, ETS with the mufflers sounds great. I find Invidia tends to get rid of pops/gurgles and just sounds too stock to me.

So stuck between both omg, I want people to still come for drives in the wrx. Scared the r400 will annoy everyone in the car except me! So questioning if the Q300 is loud enough to make me love it, and passengers to not want to jump out the car whilst i'm driving. Ahh!

If you're just going for catback on FA motor, no drone or very little on r400

I didnt have any issues driving it as a catback. But definitely feeling it for the full turboback.

all these vids just sold me the Q300 over the R400...
The Q300 is definitely a better exhaust to go for. Unless you're only going for a catback on the VA. Though I'm curious to see what people think about both on the VB chassis.
