A CALIFORNIAN father and son have teamed up to supersize the classic Volkswagen Beetle. The VW enthusiasts upscaled the car by 40%, making it bigger than a Hummer. Scott Tupper, the younger generation of the duo, told Truly how the idea developed. “My dad and I thought it would be nice if we had a Volkswagen that was comfortable and not feel like you're going to get run over in traffic.” Once the idea was hatched, they went about making the dream into a reality. “We had a 59 Volkswagen convertible, we digitized it, scanned it everywhere, took it apart, and made each part 40% bigger on the computer.” Unsurprisingly, the vehicle has caused a lot of buzz on the roads. “People chase you to try to get up next to it, they almost run you off the road because they're not looking where they're going."

that thing makes the real beetle look like a go-kart lmao
Like a (-golf) go kart
I thought the vw beetle made the vw beetle looked like a golf kart.
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I GOT A 1955 THUNDERBIRD THOS ARE BETTER THAN A FOCKING GOLF CART !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought they made a smaller bug
Yeah, as if the beetle wasn't already the size of a go-kart lol. Jk
Now we need a vw van the size of a bus
Oh, That would be awesome
It exists already saw it on here a few months back...just like this but the van.
@@RunAboveIt the size of a bus?
@@RunAboveIt let me see a pictuee
@@eom2967 Google Giant VW bus
Woah, Herbie took steroids.
GOOD ONE 😄😅😅😆😆 for those who remember Herbie...!!!
LOL
Underrated comment!👍
@@shwt121 I remember Herbie everyone does
@@Zenas521 same
it takes such talent to build a vehicle like this
respect
I must say,the father and son are engineering geniuses. To duplicate a manufactured car and completely fabricate it out of scale is phenomenal!
But does the top go down?? I want to see that mullet blowing in the wind!
😂😂😂
I'm pretty sure you call that a skullet, not a mullet.
@@Brian-jv8iy well I wasn't born in the last 4 decades and in my day we called that a skullet, just because some moron teenagers invented a stupid haircut doesn't change that fact, also thanks for sucking the funny out... I didn't intend to hurt anyone's feelings.. No wait, I don't care if I did! Thanks for the lesson.
The car cost a small fortune I'm sure. Too bad he couldn't budget in a haircut.
@@Brian-jv8iy thanks for putting the fuuny back.
I couldn't wrap my head around this. Every time I saw it with the real VW I thought the real one was miniature. Could have shot some better footage for size comparisons.
That would have given it away. The "real one" is a slight miniature.
@@franksvatek1873 I was just wondering that. If you look at the front view pic at 1:58 the hood comes down so narrow it seemed modified to me. But that could also be the perspective and the over-proportioned car next to it. But around the front fenders the "regular" one looked like it was 80% the size of a VW bug.
@@ccllvn , I'm pretty certain that the "stock" VW has some performance mods and upgrades. A better, lower suspension and maybe a modest front fender flare or reshaping to accommodate the fatter low profile tires will all make the car "less tall" than stock. 20% smaller ? I don't think so but I'm no math surgeon. I'm a photographer that notices things like what angle is your camera in relation to your subject. Notice how the Big Bug is always photoed at or below the height of the top of the tires. Makes everything look bigger. The little one is photoed at the bottom of the windscreen; makes everything look smaller. Try it on your own car. It's fun. And you can tell other camera know-it-all's ( they always know better than you how to do it . . . ) that you're just making adjustments to control the parallax distortion when you will be in fact using that "distortion" to be creative. You can thank me when you win a photo prize !
I can't tell which one he's driving from the inside shots lmao
They need a banana for scale.
The constant panning in and out from the camera guy gets old really quick. And the 1 second snips of the car being shown over and over, really? If you can't provide some decent pictures, then why show it at all?
I'm not sure, but this type of editing might be a British thing...
No footage of it being built. Im not convinced it exists.
Velocipedium it does exist. Jay Leno even had it briefly on his show. I have a cousin in LA that saw the bug also. It does exist.
It really sucks. I give a thumb down.
They dont show any technic or the bottom of the car.
Watch jay leno's garage episode on it, way better
Now that’s a Super Beetle. They should get 2 more small bugs, each a little different, and follow the big bug around town.
😂
Like ducks
An average size guy driving this looks like Richard Hammond driving a normal Bug
Europe: Does a thing
USA (80 years later): Does the same thing, but yuuuuge
I believe you meant to say "yuuuuge"?
@@thorflot will make the edit, lol
Amazing nailed the proportions and scale Perfect
Goliath Beetle
A Hercules beetle
The 9 dislikes are from the VW concept team members that didn't think about it first.
Nah, it's just James May using all his nine accounts to downvote his petty hate for the bug.
It's because he's bald and has long hair only in the back
They did a fantastic job building the huge bug .. 👍🏻👍🏻
no, one of them is me for not at least once showing it next to a regular vehicle
It looks so close to a beetle that I would have to see it in highway traffic to really get the size. ✌️
Can you imagine seeing it on the freeway up ahead, and be like , "Oh it a VW bug".
Only to catch up and it doesn't get any smaller! Lol
Oh my lord Its Criminal they didnt' put another car next to it to compare it.
The Beetle isn't another car?
When they drove off. A Jeep Commander looked tiny.
It's bigger than a hummer
It's 40% let you brain work the size out.
@@jjryan1352 Showing another beetle that is so similar tricks the brain into thinking maybe it's a normal size beetle next to a tiny beetle, the shots of the two together showed little scale reference. So, no, the 'nearly' identical beetle does not count. You need a different vehicle that is of commonly known size to use as a scale reference. Since it was stated it's bigger than a Hummer, they should have found an actual Hummer and drove by it. They are in southern California, you're telling me they couldn't find a hummer to compare it to there? Or how about just drive past a bus? those are easy to find and get video of.
I don't think it's "criminal" they overlooked that detail, but it is a sign of sloppy video production and direction.
Not only is the idea brilliant , this bloke makes the dream a reality.
Thank you for sharing this.
You and your crew really have captured my attention. How bloody marvellous, spectacular. Words fail me. I am so very impressed
From Canterbury U.K.
Now all we need is for the owner of huge bug to meet up with the guy in Arizona with the dwarf cars.
I saw that thing once on the freeway, I thought I was going crazy because I saw it in my rear view mirror and it was far behind but it looked closer, then it passed me and then I realized, that's a HUGE BUG 🤣🤣🤣
amazing!! making it 40 percent bigger on a computer is one thing, Id love to see how they fabricated all the parts, bits and pieces that much bigger! just imagine making the hood!
Nothing a credit card won't fix. I'm guessing this guy and his dad have a few bucks behind them.
@@darrylvanrooy Apparently it cost around $15,000 to make
@@Brebgon Bargain if true, but probably just 15 grand in parts, not accounting for any labor.
When you put the wrong scale model in a diorama.
Has Jay Leno been by yet ?
The guy and his dad was on Jay's UA-cam show a few years ago with the car.
This would make me think Im having a stroke
Amazing, the scale is perfect. Great job
Brilliant! I love that they made it as original as possible.
I’m impressed by the desire to create something from nothing, well done.
Well, they created it from a Dodge truck and the proportions of a classic VW bug.
damn you burnt dodge fans
@Wayne Pantry that joke flew over your head
@@thatonecarguy8488 Took me a while to figure out it was a burn, lmao.
Custom jobs usually don’t impress me much but you guys really impressed me with this car... I respect your skill in this ...excellent work... I’d love to have it!
I'm impressed with all the correct details. I mean door handles, mirrors, frame around glass windows, running board, and even the way the tires look on the rims and in relation to the fender wells. I even think I see the correct jacking point just ahead of the rear tire under the running board! Just a superb reproduction.
This is a car I'd love to see at least 2.5-million copies of, hell yeah I'd want one too.
Love it . Love to see pics of the build. Great job
Good Idea, good craftmanship, good Job and it looks like a fullgrown Volkswagen. Made in USA.
Greetings from Lamspringe Germany from DANIEL.
That's Awesome! Need to send that puppy to Germany for a tour. Tell everyone this is what happens when you take your vitamins!
Okay, so that Beetle’s staying where it is. What about building duplicates?
Yeah build a hardtop Herbie replica in that size! Since it's already using Hemi power anyway drop a Scat Pack drivetrain in that mofo!
I love that everything is custom and hand fabricated so well that it doesn't look custom and hand fabricated. The engineering and thought forward process of completing this is just baffling. This Punch Bug packs a REAL punch.
Wow ! What a brilliant idea .. I love it
The Museum of Modern Art needs to know about this. The giant Beetle belongs in an exhibition of conceptual art.
Very cool! Hats off to you guys, that's some amazing work.
My uncle had a dark green Bug when I was a kid. And that little bug was fun. This big bug, I love it!
Awesome job! Totally unique and very cool.
Fabulous!!

i pulled up next to this car on the 10 freeway today. it blew my mind. it was bigger than my Silverado i was driving. it looks like a giant beetle. the details are spot on and the car looks incredibly well done in person. i was struggling to take pics of it next to normal vehicles in traffic to try to show the scale of it lol. bravo to the creators of this incredible replica
This is a tribute to the engineering and fabrication skills of the team that built it. I know how hard it is to do this kind of thing. Well done all.
That took some serious metal work. Impressive.
Way cooler than any super car. Pure genius and smiles guaranteed!
Incredible and great work!
thats fantastic! well done guys.
This is totally awesome! My twin brother and I had this very idea (a 'king' bug) . One day, a little over 35 years ago now, we both stopped what we were doing and knew we had just had the same thought simultaneously. Thank you for showing me the end result of 'our' idea. Lol.
The attention to detail is amazing! I lost my mind when he showed the drop down the gauge cluster!!!!
Fantastic and brilliant build sir!
My hat’s off to you 👍🏽
COOL!!! I've always liked a Bug! Sensational!
THAT IS TOO COOL!!! I love it! 👍😎😄
It is hard to tell between 1958 and 1959 VW Beetle, since they are 10 changes for 1958 VW alone. The changes are: 1). Front turn signals moved on top of fenders, 2). Radio grill moved to the left, front of the driver, 3). Rear window and windshield are enlarged, 4). Flat accelerator pedal introduced; formerly roller type, 5). Wider brake drums, 6). Stronger fan belt, 7). Stronger reinforce body frame, and 8). "W" on deck lid is deleted, but I don't know the other 2 changes for 1958 VW Beetle, but it is minor. 1959 VW Beetle has no changes, save for serial numbers.
Absolutely amazing and wicked!!!
Y love you Beetle! Eu adoro o Fusca!
Parabéns pela invensão
I saw the car at what I *think* was its debut at the Edelbrock show a few years back. It was one of the most impressive builds I've ever seen. It was just perfect.
Muito legal, parabéns pelo carro.
🇬🇧 Fantastic piece of work. Well done.
Without doubt, incredible...looks really good and the attention to detail is excellent...well done....👏🙌🙌👏you need to put it through a car wash then bring out the smaller one...and see people's reactions...it's shrunk 😁😉
See, 2020 isn't all bad, great work guys!
Awesome informative Video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya Prayers 🙏
This is brilliant ! Greetings from the Netherlands!
outstanding job guys....thanks
I would love to see you take it by Jay's garage for his take on it.
Great work. Amazing.
This just goes to show you...Your mind is a beautiful creative amalgamation of endless thoughts, flowing down a stream of unparalleled rhythmic consortium of destinys not yet researched for the fun and useful resources and intentions....
Very nicely done! I would have liked to see it next to other vehicles other than the original bug for comparison.
Excellent job getting the scale right!
Would you sale the template on how to build?
Awesome job! 😃👍
That is unreal. U guys have a awesome talent. I want one
Cool ride , nice job. 👍👍🤠😎
I am knocked out of my tree. Beautiful!
You did such a good job that I can't tell the difference on camera until the small bug pulls up then you see it's size. Wow super cool guys
You guys did an awesome job. Wow

The skill to do this is made me blowing.
This German who made his License in a bug (in 1968 in Berlin) sends SUPERKUDOS for your magnificent effort. Pretty fantastic.
Das ist wunderbar!
A phenomenally well executed work!
But this has to be the kind of exceptional and eccentric thing one does just because one can...
Hell yah brotha that's awesome!

Cool build!!
That's awesome that you and your son made a Huge Volkswagen Bug.
Wow. Excellent job. 👍
What a brilliant idea !!
And as a cabriolet - that’s some extra work kids! I’ve got a ‘62 Cabrio myself. Wish they could’ve got it rear motor with a Porsche flat 6, but that’s ok! 👌🏼
Exceptionally well done 😮👌🏽
That's the coolest thing I've ever seen
i love this build!!
Very cool, and talented build

That’s awesome I want to see a Kombi next.
Totally bonkers. Excellent!
Impressive build, equally impressive mullet.
So very clever. I like it.
Wow that is a cool car whoever made it is one hell of a body man
Incredible build. It reminded me of Clifford the dog. Is the engine up front?
The videography should have shown much more details - much too weak, like an Entertainment Tonight piece.
This is cool😍😍😍
its incredible, wow two guys...
Amazing and a hard shape to do by hand too
