small detail but i love peter's positioning and acting during this whole scene. you can see the grief and distress in him from jesus's accusation onward. how he's the only one who continues to stay near the table during the judas and jesus fight even while the other apostles scramble backwards, how he leans and collapses against it in time with the dramatics and emotional beats of the song and sometimes seems like he's trying to fix what's on it, the way he reaches towards jesus and the others in fear and pleading--it all hits my heart strings. i especially love the moment at 5:34 where he gets shoved away and down by another one of the apostles in disgust. god.
Jerome Pradon is ridiculously talented Saw this production live and he was magnificent. The whole ensemble were brilliant but Jerome was breath-takingly good
I enjoyed the performances of Ted Neely and Carl Anderson as Jesus Christ and Judas in the 1974 version as well the one from Ian Gillian and Murray Head in the 1970 version too. Also check out Tony Hadley and Roger Daltrey's performance in the BBC production of Jesus Christ Superstar from.1996. They both do a fantastic job in their portrayals of Jesus and Judas.
"YOU SAD PATHETIC MAN!" dude, I grew up in a very religious household, and when this first came out when I was 8, I was shocked at seeing somebody straight up insult Jesus like that. XD
@Elias Farendune Clobberer in most versions of jesus he is depicted as a white male with brown curly hair.. a brown beard.. and white robes look up jesus and youll see that im right
THE CYBER WARRIOR This however doesn’t change the fact that he most likely didn’t look like that. There were also many versions of his appearance, like the one on the Last Judgement painting in the Sistene Chapel
I mostly judge this song by how well the judas actor sings the opening line to superstar towards the end, and this guy was absolutely AWESOME at that part
4:41 - 5:28 the confrontation is definitely the best scene of this song. Look at the gradual change in their expressions and the twitch on their face. Not like the 73 or 12’s version, it’s really a frank and sincere interaction, neither of them flinched to stare at each other’s eyes. In their eyes their dreams turned into ashes, they witnessed each other stepping into doom but could do nothing to help. In their eyes you can see their questioning, their fury, disappointment, attachment and begging. Both of them knew it was a point of no return, but after all, in the very beginning, they stood side by side, they were friends.
Personally, I like the 73's version of this scene better. It took a bit more advantage of the space they had. They took more care to look at the dumb-founded apostles in this version, I just don't know if that's an advantage.
I like 1973 version and this version for different reasons. 1973 version was filled with great singers. I think 1973 version was perfect in singing. However they didn't 'act' much in that version. They focused on singing rather than using by body language. This version however I can feel the tense mood between Judas and Jesus. I can see their love, anger, and anguish through their eyes.
@Robert Bonvallet Anderson got much better voice, and Jesus chasing Judas to give him his cloak was a perfect touch, but standout of two J's in this version is just mindblowing. Judas falling to feet of one he betrayed is just heartbreaking.
Yeah! This version has some of the best acting then any other version in my opinion (that I can understand anyway), but dear god is Judas’ actor out of his range, he is a fantastic actor but his voice hurts my ears at times. The arena 2012 version is still my favourite both for the music and nostalgia (one of the first musicals I ever saw). Both versions have plenty of little moments I love (for example 2000- Judus’ expressions when the crowed says ‘die for me’ and in 2012 Judas actually goes to the temple with Jesus but is physically stopped from entering) but this is a sung through musical and when one of leads just can’t sing well it kind of ruins the whole musical.
I think there's a happy medium somewhere, I'd say Carter and Anderson would be the best in their roles. Carl Anderson was one of the people who did actually emote in the original even if a lot of it was angry confusion.
I love this movie because I feel like I never learnt why Judas did what he did. My teachers always just described the guy as an evil betrayer who was out for gold alone.
Judas was a worldly, greedy dude who viewed Jesus’s as another prosperity preacher he thought he could take advantage of; maybe even thought he would overthrow the Romans. At least that’s one interpretation of Judas’s character.
Also a lot of artists, who painted the last supper, depicted Judas with a black halo. Perhaps, his shirt's colour changing to black may be a reference to it as well.
Yes, and also later on you see Judas standing with the people that warranted his arrest. They were all in black as well, it shows how you can see Judas’ intention and loyalty has changed and that he no longer really belonged with Jesus and the other apostles. At the same time the emotion he shows tells you he regrets what he did and that he has deeper issues. You can see the guilt in his face when Jesus sings at the start and he turns his head away, and then lays at his feet at the end.
There’s so many subtle nods in the 2000 version. It’s really cool. I just wish they picked someone else for Judas. Don’t get me wrong he’s not a bad singer, but the part of Judas is well out of his range to the point he just sounds awful
Same here. I’ve been trying to give this version another go recently but it just didn’t click to me. I get what they’re trying to do in making it more theatre-like but the singing is really inconsistent and the whole thing feels a bit cheap and dated. There are some bits of it I like - I’m a huge Rik Mayall fan so I love the Herod song, and the mix of traditional and modern sets works quite well I think but yeah, something feels very amateurish about it.
I think this is the most realistic depiction of this musical we have yet. Other versions it seems like the singers are more worried about how their vocals sound rather than how realistic their character's emotional state sounds. Sometimes singing in a play can be more about relaying realistic emotional responses in human settings than showing off the incredible depth of your voice... Just my opinion though.
@@KadyFillingerWhile I do get your perspective, for me Musicals aren't about realism, their premise asks you to throw realism out and just feel, letting your senses loose at whatever the characters are experiencing; we hear their thoughts through song after all. This is just my take
Agreed. I love a lot of musicals but nothing has kept me coming back like JCS, and no musical I’ve heard has songs as good as Gethsemane or Heaven on Their Minds
Some of the best background faces: 3:04 "Ew, no. No, no, no. You actually gave us your body to eat, man? What is wrong with you? I'm gonna have to rethink this whole disciple thing." 3:39 "The choreographer told us not to stand up, but we still care, we really do." 3:54 "Back away from the traitor. Don't let it touch you." 4:40 That guy is stressed and scared beyond human limits. 6:42 And he just doesn't know how to carry on with life. He's having a total crisis and questioning everything. 7:07 Traumatized. Needs therapy. 7:16 Are you crying or are you yawning? Also 8:23 - bottom left corner - what's with his leg??? It's bent backwards over his head or something.
I really think Glenn Carter deserves more appreciation than he gets, I much prefer him to Ted Neeley who sings very well (though quite gravelly) but who has about three different facial expressions
Completely agree. Honestly, I think saying Ted has even three different facial expressions is being generous. His voice is a better fit for the role, but Glenn (my favorite Simon; 1996 London cast recording) actually *acts* it.
jesus vs judas... peace and love vs charity and order ..... who will wi- 5:25 is jesus crying? 5:26 uh judas what are you gonna do? 5:42 oh crap welp judas won I guess... wait... 5:57 jesus uses holy scream! 6:04 it's super effective! 6:21 JUDAS IS DOWN JESUS WINS! 6:31 wait.. Judas uses scream of guilt tripping! 6:39 IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE JESUS HAS BURSTED INTO TEARS AND SO HAS HIS ARMY! JUDAS HAS WON!
What I love about this is how it illustrates Jesus and Judas' relationship. It's brotherly and this show is really just about two brothers growing apart from one another. One of them has become too ambitious and is inherently jeopardizing the cause despite pure intentions. The other is grounded in reality and fears the consequences of their actions which makes him a mean figure on the exterior despite wanting to preserve the cause. Both have their qualities and flaws that make them two very compelling protagonists.
What is interesting is the Book of Judas was translated to be against the other apostles. That they were all fools and had no idea what Jesus was actually preaching, but he knew it needed to be that way in order for Christianity to work. The two translations goes against what we know Judas as. While they both agree that he betrayed Jesus, one says he was enlightened and chosen to do so, the other says he was a Demon sent to do so. It’s interesting watching these after watching that documentary.
Say what you want about how this version has the gayest disciples (and Pilate too), but this has to be the most intense Jesus-Judas confrontation in all versions.
But too intense! They seem to absolutely hate each other which they do not according to the lyrics and story. They love and admire each other so to see Judas shoving Jesus and taunting him is just totally wrong

notice how positive and hopeful the tone of everything in the 80s and 90s were until 9/11. The next Jesus Christ Superstars were dystopic....and here we are now..
When Gale Edwards (who also directed this version) staged this at the Melbourne Arts centre virtually all the costumes were the exact same, from all the tight singlets and cargo pants/army boots on the apostles to the neo-nazi Romans and Judas' red wife-beater singlet and black leather jacket. The High Priest costumes were awesome, though!! Look those up they're so sweet
I have three different versions of this movie -- the 1973 on location version, the 2000 stage version, and the 2012 Arena version -- and I love them all. With the different times made, the different sets and different casts, each movie has its own unique feel. I do have to say that my favorite Judas is Tim Minchin in the arena production.
Spotlight follow Jesus, push an apostle, spotlight stay on Jesus, push another apostle, go in circles, spotlight say on Jesus, go in more circles, keep singing, push another apostle, go in circles still, spotlight stay on Jesus.....point at Peter.
While I'm not a fan of Glenn Carter's voice, I have to admit that I consider his delivery on The Last Supper to be way superior than Neeley's at times. Too bad that this is a duet.
I think people seem to miss that this version is much more like a theatre production than the 1973 version. The sets are made in a way that they could easily be built in a real performance and the acting is a bit over-dramatic but to me that just adds so much to the feel of this version for me. The 1973 version has some good singing, but the acting feels much weaker and the setting is much more movie appropriate than theatre.
The acting is weaker??? LMAO WHAT???? This here is terrible acting. Over the top and cheap. Jeus and Judas are human and real in the old verson. This is like a cheap soap opera.
I completely agree with you. Those who choose the film version over this version clearly don't know how raw and live emotions work in theatre. As a drama teacher myself I can just about guarantee that this way of acting is so much harder than it looks.
I think that if you’re going to translate a stage show into a close-up, replayable film format, you NEED to change some techniques for sure. I love performing on the stage, but this is painful to watch even while trying to like it.
@@stormfischerr Perhaps you find it painful, but I and many others find it easy to see it as a recording of a live performance, rather than a film and that makes it more enjoyable.
@@giannis_tar You clearly don't watch much theater. That 'over the top' and 'cheap' acting is done for the sake of the audience, who may be seated at some distance in a production. Making clear expressions so that anyone can understand exactly what emotion you are conveying is actually the sign of a very good theatrical production, not cheap at all. Is it over acting? Perhaps, but it's to match the theatrical nature of the production and these actors do it perfectly.

small detail but i love peter's positioning and acting during this whole scene. you can see the grief and distress in him from jesus's accusation onward. how he's the only one who continues to stay near the table during the judas and jesus fight even while the other apostles scramble backwards, how he leans and collapses against it in time with the dramatics and emotional beats of the song and sometimes seems like he's trying to fix what's on it, the way he reaches towards jesus and the others in fear and pleading--it all hits my heart strings. i especially love the moment at 5:34 where he gets shoved away and down by another one of the apostles in disgust. god.
judas and jesus so expressive
Jerome Pradon is ridiculously talented
Saw this production live and he was magnificent. The whole ensemble were brilliant but Jerome was breath-takingly good
I didn’t like his voice much before, but after hearing it a few times, it’s grown on me.
And to think, he's actually french and he's doing this with an English accent. Impressive. Truly impressive.
Jerome never played this role live, he has played Herod in a small tour but never Judas apart from the DVD recording.
@@Schoolgirl325it's confusing because he's so good in other roles
Honestly the 1973 version is my favorite singing wise but the acting in this is phenomenal
1973 version shows the emotional side more sincere and more correctly. This version is more theatrical.
"YOU SAD PATHETIC MAN!" dude, I grew up in a very religious household, and when this first came out when I was 8, I was shocked at seeing somebody straight up insult Jesus like that. XD
you didnt find it weird that the guy looked literally nothing like jesus except for his robes and hair?
@Elias Farendune Clobberer in most versions of jesus he is depicted as a white male with brown curly hair.. a brown beard.. and white robes look up jesus and youll see that im right
THE CYBER WARRIOR
This however doesn’t change the fact that he most likely didn’t look like that.
There were also many versions of his appearance, like the one on the Last Judgement painting in the Sistene Chapel
@@gothenix in most versions he looks like what I described. that means it is most likely that he looked like that

Greatest Judas acting.
Agree
The acting of all of them is just.... wow!
I mostly judge this song by how well the judas actor sings the opening line to superstar towards the end, and this guy was absolutely AWESOME at that part
Simon's 'wtf' face when Jesus says "This is my blood you drink" 🤣
4:41 - 5:28 the confrontation is definitely the best scene of this song. Look at the gradual change in their expressions and the twitch on their face. Not like the 73 or 12’s version, it’s really a frank and sincere interaction, neither of them flinched to stare at each other’s eyes. In their eyes their dreams turned into ashes, they witnessed each other stepping into doom but could do nothing to help. In their eyes you can see their questioning, their fury, disappointment, attachment and begging. Both of them knew it was a point of no return, but after all, in the very beginning, they stood side by side, they were friends.
did you just make a phantom reference-
Cal
It’s a Andrew Lloyd Webber show
So gotta get that Phantom reference in a musical about Jesus Christ
Personally, I like the 73's version of this scene better. It took a bit more advantage of the space they had.
They took more care to look at the dumb-founded apostles in this version, I just don't know if that's an advantage.
Masters of facial expressions
Honestly it’s the only part where Jerome is somewhat decent at singing. His acting, however is on point throughout the show.
I agree
Disagree. This version's acting is very theatrical, 73's more subtle and cinematic.
I think there's a happy medium somewhere, I'd say Carter and Anderson would be the best in their roles. Carl Anderson was one of the people who did actually emote in the original even if a lot of it was angry confusion.
The tension between Jesus and Judas towards the end is heartbreaking (if not exactly Biblical!)
There will never be a musical that portrays healthy male companionship better than JCS
I like how the lighting goes from bright and holy to dark and shadowy
Both actors are going all in here and it’s great.
I love this movie because I feel like I never learnt why Judas did what he did.
My teachers always just described the guy as an evil betrayer who was out for gold alone.
Judas as the misunderstood good guy is what Gnosticism was based on.
Judas was a worldly, greedy dude who viewed Jesus’s as another prosperity preacher he thought he could take advantage of; maybe even thought he would overthrow the Romans. At least that’s one interpretation of Judas’s character.
Well ,,,,,this is the best one since Ted And Carl,,,,,,,truly moving
Anyone notices how judas' shirt changed form red to black as a sign of betrayal? Good visual presentation if you ask me.
Throughout the play Judas' shirt also slowly becomes more tattered and torn, maybe also to symbolize his sanity going to shit
😀 wow this is exactly why reading comments is enriching!
5:27 the transition is really making me shiver 😢
This is what made this one superior to the 73 version. This is just beautiful.
yeah, the acting seem way more real in this version
I don't necessarily think this version is very good, but I kind of have to love it for how over the top melodramatic it is.
This is just my take
@@treaveannyretro92 it depends on the director and the viewers. Everybody has a different view on plays. But Dito, I get your perspective as well.

Agreed. I love a lot of musicals but nothing has kept me coming back like JCS, and no musical I’ve heard has songs as good as Gethsemane or Heaven on Their Minds

Ted is a better singer for the genre. Remember that this is a rock concert tribute to Jesus and not an accurate musical

Nothing to do with the actual Gospels, then.
