    ----------
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

I really like it that after Judas betrayed him, Judus hugged Jesus. This shows he regrets what he did and will never forgive himself. And Jesus who hugs him back shushing and comforting him. This really shows Jesus is okay with what Judas did, and that he will never stop loving him, whatever he does.

One of the most intriguing things this play shows is what would've happened if Judas decided not to go through with his betrayal. He was "a puppet" of God, he was instructed to do the dirty job, forever to be remembered as the greatest traitor ever. I wonder if Jesus knew that without the help of Judas, the whole story would've never happened the way it was "supposed to happen".

I like that the only moment of total silence in the movie is the actual act of Judas betraying Jesus. This movie also did a great job of showing Judas' total regret of what he did - in other versions, you don't see him nor his expressions at all, so the only time you hear him again after this event is in his song during which he kills himself. This movie rectified that mistake.

I love that line and how differently it's delivered. In the 1973 movie, Jesus just seems resigned and tired of his unruly disciples. In this, it's like he's trying to soothe them so they stop being aggressive. In the 2012 stage version, Jesus appeared genuinely saddened by their tendency to fight, and in the 2018 version John Legend delivered it as a straight-up diss. My favorite version! Got a question for y'all: God had all this planned out. What I'm saying is that his betrayal was planned before he was even born. So, since this is how God wanted it to happen, Judas was predestined to betray Jesus from the start. In this case, do you think Judas went to Heaven, or did he go to Hell?

    • @Damonistique

    • @Damonistique
      @Damonistique 5 років тому +13

@@rebeccakfinley4832 Well, the predestination here is a tricky question.
If we suppose that there is a God in this story, we can develop several possible options:
      1) Only key points are predestined, e.g. Jesus's death, Judas's betrayal. The rest is in their hands (otherwise there would be no need to punish throughout Bible).
      2) Nothing is predestined, but God is always testing his people. Here we have numerous options of what was told to Jesus (if it was), the main thing is that Jesus is unswerving to his ideas and task. On the contrary, Judas just fails his test.
Even three times of denial is not a proof of predetermination - Peter might have got his idea from Jesus saying so, without this he could have run away or confess he was with Jesus, or sth else as well.
Actually, I suppose that suicide IS a mortal sin because of the fact of a free will. Your life is a property of God, He decided to give it to you, and killing yourself is like questioning the God's authority which is a sin number one %) and still suicide exists.
Also we have another options, where the Judas's fate is ambiguous.
      3) God is just mad for Judas's betrayal and He punishes the man (which means He didn't know about betrayal and it was just Jesus's guess, also free will then).
      4) God is trying to beat Satan in Judas's body that way (the Gospels say he entered it at a time of betrayal).
      5) Yup, God is just cruel and the situation is unfair :D (but maybe only from a point of view of mankind)
(there could be more options, but that's all I can easily come up with...)
All in all, the predeterminism is not really obvious...

Both in this more realistic version as well as in the bible this is something that must happen. So why is Judas seen as the bad guy? He just saved the Jews from a massacre as well as doing the will of God. As it says in the bible: "Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

The fact they pull off the basically same thing using crowd tactics and politically motivated terrorism gets their temple gets razed down the next time they try it proves it.
Judas protected his nation and 50,000 followers but laments over that this "mob" seeking out messiahs wasn't worth saving than one good honest man.
If you think of it his suicide is a equal value exchange for Jesus reviving. Only one man can be the same value for another man. Coincidence?

Far more so these days than when this was first composed back in 1970, the questions which members of the chorus fire at Jesus are very reminiscent of the way in which members of the press so often descend on a person of interest a bit like a plague of locusts -- and especially when this person is surrounded by controversy or scandal -- and bring the spotlight of popular attention to bear on him or her.

Judas was a disciple who did wonderful miracles on earth . but by the time Jesus was going to die on the cross for our sins . Judas betrayed him with money . which gotten him into suffering a suicidal death. Peter on the other hand was also with Jesus . but because of the roman soldiers were going to kill him too. . Jesus did say " Put your sword back in it's place , for if you take up the sword , you will die by the sword " . which means that Jesus told him that this was the way . that he was going to die for us . and that violence was a dead end . the Chief priests and the scribes didn't want to believe him . cause they were saying one thing and doing the other . the things they've accused him of treason and blaspheming . and that they think that the wonderful miracles that he performed were from the devil

Okay, I know why the kiss happens, because it's so Judas can show the, which one's Jesus, but a) shouldn't they already know who he is, and b) he takes a second to stare longingly at him with those beautiful totally-not-fruity eyes. You'd think that the soilders would be like, "hey, do you think Jesus is the guy who Judas is practically crying over right now? Maybe...." but no, it takes the kiss to convince them.
Also I hate that this musical makes me ship biblical figures.

What was it Jesus' disciples thought was going to happen the night of his arrest? They brought two swords so, clearly, they were expecting a fight. And it's no wonder they did! After all, for three years they had served as his apprentices, learning how to heal people, but more importantly as far as they were concerned, they were convinced he was the Messiah, the Jewish warrior king who would seize the Throne of David and, with God's help, oust Rome and establish a new, independent, theocratic Jewish state! They had just seen him challenge the religious hierarchy by entering Jerusalem as a hero, if only a very humble one, and provoking their anger when he drove the money changers and other crooked traders out of the Temple! Jerusalem was overflowing with pilgrims for the Passover Feast, and the sense of rebellion was thick in the air. They had to have been thinking, "If ever Jesus was going to start the revolution, now would be the time!" However, when the arresting party showed up at the Garden of Gethsemane, and one of his disciples began attacking, he told him to put away his sword and, then, just surrendered, peacefully! At that moment, their worst fears came true all at once! They had probably already been wondering if they'd made a mistake in thinking Jesus was the Expected Messiah, but now, in that moment, whatever hope they had vanished! What happened next? Well, most of us know the story of Jesus' crucifixion and the stories that began to spread like fire just a few days later--that he had risen from the dead! Indeed, the dashed hopes of Jesus' disciples were suddenly renewed! In no time at all, they figured his death was just part of God's master plan--so God could raise him from the dead to prove to all the Jews he was the Messiah after all! In the days that followed, they fully expected him to come out of concealment and re-enter Jerusalem, this time, on a mighty steed, as the risen, triumph, Messianic King!
But...that's not what happened! He didn't come back....
Did the disciples fail, AGAIN, to get Jesus, and what he was really all about? Basically, yeah! So, if Jesus' own disciples, the very ones who actually walked with him and heard his words and watched how he behaved, if they didn't get him...how can we, today, possibly have a chance to understand what Jesus was really all about? As it turns out, there may very well be a way! With the help of the best methods modern scholarship has at its disposal, we may very well be able to piece together a reliable picture of what Jesus was really like and what he really stood for! Wow these comments! People, please read and study the Bible. Learning theology and the Bible through musicals and artsy Hollywood type movies is not a great idea. Let's get this straight:
    - God never forced or predestined Judas to betray Jesus. But He knows people's heart and knew which man had a character (based on his free will) capable of betraying Jesus.
Judas wasn't predestined, he grew up and chose to become a man of questionable character before he even joined Jesus.
Maybe he had already shown God that he was a thief, liar, manipulator, and prideful enough to not fully repent from his sins ever.
He wasn't a good man whom God forced to act despicably to fullfil His Word. Rather a man who freely chose to unrepentantly go against God during his life, so he was chosen to become a disciple to fullfil the Scripture.
God wants all the souls to repent and go to Heaven, but given free will, there will be souls who will freely reject Him (He will try to save them until the end).
Judas was given the opportunity to repent until the end, like St. Peter who denied Jesus, or St. Paul who killed Christians. Judas didn't repent (that's why he hanged himself), he felt guilt or regret which is a precedent of repentance, but not repentance.
Repentance is an honest change of heart, a true rejection of sin, and a commitment to not sin ever again (we usually stumble and fall again, but the point is to fight as hard as possible against it with the grace of God).
We are told that just before betraying Jesus an evil spirit entered Judas (John 13:27). God allowed it, but not without's Judas free will first harboring malice in his heart. In all this, it was Judas' free will to betray Jesus, and not God's ordination.
    - People saying that this scene is so cute or whatever because Jesus hugs Judas and Judas looks sad, please. Jesus said rather firm and serious words when it came to Judas and his betrayal. He said "one of you is a devil" (John 6:70), "It would be better for him if he had not been born" (Matthew 26:24).
God the Father and His Son Jesus (also God) are merciful to sinners who repent. However, no one can fool God, He isn't like a human who can't recognize manipulation, who can't see within the heart of another man, who doesn't know the most intimate thoughts of another person (and sometimes we even become unconscious of our deeper fears and weaknesses unless we choose to do the work and pray for help).
To the prideful and unrepentant, especially after God tries non-stop to forgive and change them, after the prayers of others, and after being next to God himself (with Jesus, as one of the 12), God has justice and not mercy for them (as they have chosen to reject God's mercy).
Jesus says many stern words to the Pharisees and other type of unrepentant, prideful characters, and warns them about losing their soul. He extents forgiveness incessantly.
So don't twist the Bible, God does love everyone, but He won't force anyone to love Him back.
Love is unconditional, but a relationship is not. Everyone is given God's unconditional love, but we need to build a relationship together with Him because it won't happen on its own without our permission and choice.
We don't have unconditional relationships, even a bad "son" might break his relationship to his parents who might continue loving him unconditionally, but depending on the situation the relationship might end.
We also let go of people we love when they choose not to have a relationship with us, yet love them unconditionally (not in a perfect way like God), but we can't relate unconditionally because if we forced someone else to be with us against their will, that would be unloving in itself (a stalker, a rapist, someone obsessed and controlling, etc.).
God loves you unconditionally and offers you salvation, but if you don't accept it, if you don't freely choose to love Him back, and to build a relationship together with Him, He won't force you. If you reject Him, your punishment isn't some revenge, you are punishing yourself by choosing to reject what is perfectly good and perfect love.
Hell isn't a bad place because God wants it, but because He stays out of it, He allows those who don't want Him, to be away from Him, and a place where the unrepentantly prideful live is definitely hell: unrepentant cheaters, liars, thieves, murderers, etc. If you repent, then you obviously don't want to do evil again, so of course God will help you to become holy and in Heaven it doesn't matter if you committed the biggest crime on earth because if you truly repented, then God knows you truly mean to never do something like that again and in Heaven your heart is freely directed to serve and love others. A place where God's perfect love, and a lot of humans with genuinely good intentions and willing to do anything to be better and love one another is Heaven.
