I saw Live Aid live on tv in 1985. Was about to go to bed. Then Queen came on. What a worthwhile experience to stay up for. What is also amazing is there was no special effects, bells or whistles needed to show what an awesome band Queen is. Love this still to this day. Freddie Mercury was such an awesome talented person. The rest of the band were awesome to.

Live Aid was grossly underperforming in donations...until Queen hit the stage. During Queen's set the donations started flooding in to the point they passed their goal by the end of the set.

    • @pablohanc
      @pablohanc Рік тому +2

@@gfear24 that's not true mate. It was portrayed in the queen distortion film bohemian rhapsody that the donations started to go up a lot during queens set, but that was one of the films many innaccuracies. The donations didnt start to go up significantly until AFTER bob geldof gave his sweary appeal, and that was after queen had been on.
It also makes zero sense for donations to go up during a set..... that's when people are watching, not dialling. Also, we are talking manually operated phone lines, taking details over the phone. It isn't like today where you could donate with a text or on the internet.

@@gfear24 not true at all. That was one of the many myths the Queen Movie tried to sell.

Freddie was having problems with his vocal chords going into Live Aid. The crowd was not a typical "Queen" crowd. The crowd became a typical Queen crowd rather quickly. The Live Aid set caused record shops to become flooded with shoppers looking for any, and all Queen albums. There's a reason why they were the band who first figured out how to come out of stadium shows making a profit. They were one of the only acts on that day who had prior experience playing to massive crowds. Then they manipulated the sound board (that was one of the few factually correct things in 'Bohemian Rhapsody') so they would be louder than everyone else. And the rest is history.

Heres the thing, of course Queen at live aid is going to be #1, there is no other performance in the world that beats that. While the music is of course top tier, it is impossible to describe the impact of that performance. Even today 37 years later, the look is iconic, the music is iconic, the location is iconic, but the last straw here is the "Eh Oh". It has become so impactful that anytime any artist performs as Wembley or anywhere around the world, the chance for them to recreate that iconic moment is extremely high. It builds such a great energy and gets the entire audience involved. Artists from BTS to Green Day still to this day do it as an ode to this performance that changed the course of live music. Thank you Freddie Mercury.

They actually had a lot of sound problems all across their prime in the 70's and the last tour, Pulse, ok it was gigantic but It was a well oiled machine and not really one great show. If Pompeii would had been in front of a crowd, It would had been on this list for sure. Honorable mentions to 3 Floyd related show though, Waters Live at Berlin after the wall felt; Gilmour's Live at Dansk and Floyd's show in Venice in 88 which was out of the ordinary in every way.

I've seen my share of concerts mostly live and quite a few on the screen. All I can say is actually being there is better than watching it on screen. While most of the acts put on a decent show there were some you could tell they were just going through the motions. Either for the money, or contractual obligations. Then there were some truly great shows that didn't fail to disappoint.
Queen never failed, regardless of venue. Live Aid was phenomenal but just a condensed version of what they could do. ELO did the World Series of Rock with a hell of a stage presence. I missed that one, but when I did see them in the early 80's, despite no orchestra, did a fine good job. Lastly, Kiss. This was a live you did not want to miss. Make up/ no make up. Absolutely pure rock and roll night and party every day. Their concert under the bridge was a classic.

Great list. Here's a few that I would include:
Nine Inch Nails--Woodstock 1994: Although not a technical masterpiece, these guys gave one hell of an intense performance, beginning with them emerging onto the stage caked in mud and concluding with the classic Head Like a Hole. I'd say this was one of the moments in the mid 1990's that helped to make this band.
AC/DC--Donnington 1991: Just a great performance from one of the best hard rock bands of all time.
Garth Brooks--Live in Central Park 1998: One of the high points of Garth's career, with a lot of standout moments, including teaming up with Billy Joel for New York State of Mind and You May be Right.
Pink Floyd--Knebworth 1990: Though brief (under an hour), this was a truly amazing set, perhaps one of the best Post-Waters shows, made even more amazing because the second half was in the pouring rain.

    [Part 2 of 2]
A performance that absolutely tore my heart apart was at the AMA’s when with only a piano, A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera poured out emotions of pain, longing, heart ache, and its all so palpable. It feels like it comes from a place of real, raw emotion. Not gonna lie, I cried like a wee baby.
    (7) A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera Belt Out a Powerful Rendition of "Say Something" at AMA 2013 - UA-cam
As a show of things to come, on her first appearance on the BET Awards, 19 May 2001, Christina Aguilera not only did a stripped down version of Whitney Houston’s 1993 hit, “I Want To Run To You”, but at her tender age, she wowed a tough to please BET Awards audience, even gaining a Standing-O.
    (7) Christina Aguilera - Run To You (Live at 1st BET Awards 19.06.2001) (HD) - UA-cam
This is, without a doubt, what led to, of all people, the American Music Awards in 2017 and Whitney’s Family, after the tragic death of a True Diva, Whitney Houston chose Christina Aguilera to pay tribute the Legend of Whitney Houston. Standing there, in a very simple black dress, very simple makeup and her hair simply slicked back, Christina Aguilera not only did justice to the memory of Whitney Houston, nbut she had EVERYONE in that auditorium in the palm of her hand, on their feet. They cheered her soaring notes and her near whispers. It was most definitely Whitney’s song, but in so very many ways, Christina Aguilera tool the melody of songs somewhere so very special. As if that were not enough, she took Whitney Houston’s cover of the Great Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” into a absolute tribute to Whitney, made it a very special ANTHEM for every woman there and every Woman watching. Respect.
    (7) Christina Aguilera - Whitney Houston & The Bodyguard Tribute (Live on American Music Awards 2017) - UA-cam
I would take Christina Aguilera with dressed down, minimalistic, so very sincerely from her heart and Soul, everyday, over someone who claimed the work of a Legendary Choreographer, Mister Bob Fosse. Who has a need to put on a show so over the top, it overwhelms all your senses. That’s just too much work to win over an audience. If you have to work that hard, claim someone else’s work as your own, are really exceptionally talented, Beyoncé?
Christina does do over the top elements in her tours, but it has true meaning, live, in front of the nation, representing something real, Christina Aguilera let’s her raw talent tell her whole story. No props, no dancers, not pyrotechnics, not light shows. Just a microphone and Miss Christina Aguilera.
You also overlooked another outstanding live performer that FAR TOO FEW people have truly recognized the breadth of her talent, Miss Janelle Monáe.
Her show for the Obama’s at the White House was electric. I don’t suppose you remember her opening the Oscars? At the Oscars, she was just so kinetic, she was undeniable. She was very reminiscent of Prince.
    (7) Janelle Monáe - Come Alive [Live at The Oscars 2020] - UA-cam
At the White House, she was her OWN person, she was also melding of Aretha Franklin, Parry LaBelle, James Brown, and a touch of Prince, but all in her OWN Unique art. An oldy from a Legendary James Bond Film and one of her very own, that is so well crafted, and defiant and electric, only Janelle Monáe could possibly bring her lyrics to life, in quite this way, IN THE WHITE HOUSE. Wow, Just WOW!
    (7) 02 Janelle Monáe Goldfinger - UA-cam
    (7) Janelle Monae Tightrope Live at the White House 20141 - UA-cam
Another WORTHY replacement for Beyoncé on your list for TRUE, AUTHENTIC, GREATNESS IN LIVE PERFORMANCES!!!
