    Thanks Pete! 😄. Hope you’re doing well. Sorry, I missed how many times the 14c28n cut? Was that 50 cuts less or more than the Perpetua?

    I have made fixed blades from both Nitro V and 14c28n and as a maker my preference goes to the Sandvik steel. My experience has been it is more consistent, a bit easier to sand and definitely more reliable in the heat treat in terms of warping! I have not heatreated a single Nitro V blade without warping whereas I have only had 1 Sandvik 14c28n warp. I have not compared edge retention though!

    The nitro v was actually ran to 61-62hrc on the Perpetua. Massdrop got a lot of complaints about 57-59hrc being too low so they did a different heat treat and raised the hardness on it.

    Picked up the Perpetua in March 2018. (first run of knife, still in the box) It seems that waiting 1-2 years after an initial production run is a good move, the HRC is a big deal in a user knife. I picked up the Ferrum Forge Gent in carbon fiber scales CPM-S35VN steel. The later generation of the knife came with improvements from the first run. Thank you for the video!

    Thanks for the infotainment Pete I have been really enjoying your channel Buddy. I have an EDC channel and have been doing some head to head reviews and I always give you a shout out when I talk about edge retention. I’m not sure if you realize how much you’ve given to the knife community with your edge testing. I’m constantly referring to it in my videos. Anyway please stay safe and keep up the great work it is so much appreciated.

    Thanks! There's room to explore and there might be surprises in store, but engineering a Uber knife only considering edge holding or steel alloy is incomplete approach. I think starting with design, then materials finally with skills like doing thermal cycles and grinding to good geometry as well as extra effort like not using electric belt grinder and sharpening machines, but doing all by hand after HT will bring a better knife.
    The thing is what would be better on this knife at this time for what use? There's never one steel for all knives for all uses. Add in people trying to make a good knife without spending more money. I bought a piece of blade material this week and this morning I found for one knife, it costs the same as two six foot bars of six inch wide @4C28N in 0.138 inch thick ess and the other bar at 0.177 inch thickness. There's a bucket of knives in those two huge bars and only one in the material I got. Food for thought and not saying the knife will perform or be any equal ratio better!!! In fact I don't see any further reason to chase good knives by spending 25 times more for the blade material.

    From my POV these steel are far away from being basic steels. Yes they aren't expensive and made in ingot tecchnique. But in my experience toughness and corrosion resistance are much more important in daily business than edge retention. When my knife is broken it's dead, when it's dull i can resharpen it. So what do i like more? I like knifes i can rely on and i don't have to be afraid of breaking when bending it by accident. I like my 14C28 and also 12C27 very much, my other prefered steels are Magnacut and S90V ;-) You have to know what to use in your specific use case.

    Would like to see non extreme test of lock strength. For example take of edge. See if lock will fail with basic hand pressures. Hanging 300 kg off knife handle does not seem terribly relevant . If a lock fail with basic hand pressures would be just as important as edge holding.

    I read in the discussion section of Drop that the maker is heat treating to a Rockwell of 60/61 for the Perpetua and that the stated hardness is old . The story is supposedly, there was a lot of complaints about the steel only being hardened to sub 60 when this was being proposed claiming it would be a waste of the steels potential.
    The commenter claims this could be supported by contacting the knife's producer.
    I don't know, I just recently did some reading previous to ordering this knife but what was said kinda sounded legit as Massdrop presumably would want people to buy the knife . Massdrop also has a reputation for having inaccurate details in their descriptions.
    Bottom line? Who knows,lol.

      @CNYKnifeNerd 4 роки тому +5

      My EDC for a while was an m4 pm2 that i experienced with pretty dramatically, in terms of sharpening.
      Id say i noticed no real change in edge retention or stability when dropping from 17° to 13°, with pretty dramatic increase in cutting efficiency in my normal uses of cutting cardboard, rope, and rubber tubing.
      My M4 pm2 at 13dps was on par with the edge retention, and stability, of my 10V K2 at 9-10dps, in the same uses. 10v at 13dps, predictably, significantly outperformed m4 at 13dps.
      Im just a jackass on the internet though, so take that as you will.

    I'm looking forward to the AEB-L vs Nitro-V! I find AEB-L is great for mushroom hunting as it's quite tough and I end up dragging the knife through rocky dirty when cutting mushrooms that haven't popped fully out of the soil. I'm wondering if Nitro-V would be tough enough for such a task. I got an Esee Xancudo and have used it once so far this year but it definitely developed many microchips from this task. Maybe after I sharpen it a few times it'll hold up better.
