They would look cute. She's tried other skin tones for some past figurines in the mystery mould series but the different brownish glazes that she had available to her at the time were a little too green hued imo to look natural. Maybe if she's gotten more glazes and wants to try making kewpie swatches we'll get to see how they turn out. Otherwise, it might be another year or two before she gets another doll that passes the creepy test lol.
In the states during the 80s the Kewpies came in a few skin tones. The hair was a little colored on the crown, cheeks on the front and back were a little rosy. They look so cute.
To avoid blackface (and other -faces), just make sure the dolls do not have true black, grey, red, yellow, or blue-brown skin, that you don't make the eyes smaller to represent East Asian dolls, and that none of the brown dolls have red lips (you can give them darker or duller brown lips). I'm sure people would love to buy a doll that best represents their family!
following on with this glazes can be a little funny with how they look before and after, probably would be good to do some swatches just to make sure that something that looks good and normal when all is said and done
Omg a little strawberry, bee, or mushroom one would be adorable!and definitely different skin tones! The blind box idea is cute in theory but I’m over it in real life
I had a plastic 80s kewpie doll! As a non-BIPOC woman - who grew up during the cabbage patch kids era where the big reason they were so popular is the wide variety of skin tones - I think that expanding beyond the pink kewpie doll is a good idea.
I absolutely loved cabbage patch as a kid! I'm white, but I was in love with the little dark skinned one. My grandma tried to tell me I couldn't have it because I'm a "white girl, and white girls should have white dolls." I was too young to know about things like racism. I just thought the black ballerina barbie and cabbage patch dolls were pretty. Luckily my mom told my grandma i could have whichever one i wanted, and got me both of them.
@@AngelavengerLI totally get it! I'm Hispanic, but whenever I had the choice, I always seemed to choose the black or red haired dolls because I liked them more, even over the "hispanic" doll. I found the white, blonde ones to be the most boring generally, probably because they were more common.
If you painted the Cupie in just random designs like you’ve done to frogs in the past I would totally buy one. Just a random cupie with a vibrant crazy pattern.
Perhaps the skin tones could reflect their attachments. For example the one with leaf attachments could have a pale green "skin tone" who says you have to stick to the rules x
Def yes for diffrent tones! I was confused as to why you hadn't already done so when i saw their colours after the oven but i understand your nerves after explanation haha, def yes to diffrent tones :)
Rose O'Neill was a friend of my grandmother, great aunt & great grandparents. This was a shock to see! It brings me such joy to see Kewpies in pop culture. Also, those butterflies are gorgeous!
The third one is the flowers and leaves of the plant saintpaulia, commonly know as African violets. Also, The little guys are adorable! I usually find then creepy but this made me want to start a collection😂
I agree with trying different skin tones also. The leaves and flower mould looks like an African violet. I think your idea of doing something special with this doll is a great idea.
Please do a series!! And please PLEASE make these into salt and pepper shakers!! I would buy them all the way from the Midwestern USA! I'm not a BIPOC person, so I can't speak on that but I do agree that a slightly different skin tone might have a better feel to it. Or add a slightly darker wash to bring out the details a bit. And you were right not to paint the hair, if you're going for authenticity 😊 They are ADORABLE!! SO creative with all those additions! Please make them available individually on the website 🙂
When I was a child kewpie dolls were only available at country fairs and the easter agriculture shows. I can remember buying one on a cane with the prettiest sparkly dress in a fan shape behind her. Also you seemed to have picked the right shade of skin tone that I remember. Just imagine tents filled from top to bottom with these little cuties?
Love the flower hats! I definitely think you should do different skin tones. Real skin tones and jewel tones. It would be super cute to do a fruit or flower series where they are say blue for blueberry, or pink and green for watermelon
I think a little ladybug one would be adorable. Personally I would want to pick the one that had the most meaning for me or the person I wanted to gift it to.
I like your idea of May Gibbs inspired ones. Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie would be cute. When your assistant has picked the moulds I wonder where they being kind or evil. They have given you a few shockers 🤣
The Kewpie Dolls are very cute!! The add-ons remind me a little of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and it would be so great to make versions of them on a Kewpie! It also reminded me of those dolls you used to get on a stick at fetes and carnivals, with big frilly lacey skirts, were they also Kewpie? So Fun!!
I agree with you that they are in the right spot on the creepy/cute ven diagram. I had always thought they were wings on the shoulders, hence unpainted. Great work yet again, thanks for the joy!
My mother had a small collection of Cupie dolls. We went all over flea markets and auctions. She had some really really tiny ones, but they came in a variety of sizes. I've seen Cupie doll with all different types of skin tones, it's not just white.
The first doll looked like a ‘Jelly Baby’ 😁 then the second was the same lol. You could start with a whiter pale skin and work your way though every skin tone, I think that would be really sweet esp a black one . Plus one like Boss one from the movie x
There are people who repaint the precious moments figurines into Goth designs. They are actually super cute! But it made me wonder if you could do something like that with the Kewpies!
I thought that you’d use the butterflies as wings for the dolls, but they were probably too small to do that. And then I noticed they have tiny little wings already! I love what you did by having the butterflies and lilies and flowers perched upon the dolls. So cute!
My mom did ceramics in the 70s and 80s and those Kewpie dolls sure brought back memories. My older sister loved them. I personally don't like them. I don't think they're creepy, just not my aesthetic. But between you and another artist who does mixed media doll sculpture I've slowly warmed to them. 🥰
If anyone was expecting a baby/have a baby, THESE WOULD BE AMAZING! Like there’s got to be multiple molds! And adding their personalities match the baby! Omg! Like if the child likes certain hobbies or food or object (like their favorite toy) add it like the additions on the originals! Omg! Customizable to everyone 😊
I feel like these would benefit from antiquing. The pink of the body is too much unbroken colour and its a bit flat. Maybe it could be done with a brown or just a darker tone of the body?
I feel it would be seen as inclusive, and both options for purchasing them would be a great idea. Maybe the ones that aren't blind boxed could be the ones that are easier to reproduce. And mystery box exclusives for the ones that are more time intensive and have less of them idk, but having an option for both would be good, in my opinion
Dang I hoped you would attach the big butterfly as wings to one 😄 I do think a variety of skin tones would be fun. Or maybe Vitiligo. But I am as white as you can be so don’t take my word for it.
Great video, the flower one is an Alberta wild rose and the Kewpie Doll one would be great together being back to back or maybe as bookstands. They would look good in the garden too. Love the jumper.
Kewpie dolls always make me think of Mabel Lucy Atwells work. I thinks differently toned Kewpies would be brilliant and extremely cute. They are just so adorable Shelby ❤
Kewpies are my most favourite dollies in the world.. I first got one at Shepparton show in the 70s . She was on a stick and celluloid with feathers and shells on her. I made a spun cotton one this year.. these are so adorable 🥰😊❤makes me so happy to see you making them xo
I have loved Kewpie babies since I was little. I'm 45. I got a plastic one for my daughter when she was little. She is now 23 and still has her. I really hope you include these kewpies in a count down calendar!! ❤❤
Soooo cute! Congrats on making your first doll! As a doll maker, I'm so proud ^_^ My favorite one the one with the leaves on it. I think different skin tones would be awesome! Even colorful themed ones would be adorable!
The butterflies remind me of a botany collection/display of preserved insects!! My mom had her own from college projects that we always loved being able to look at and enjoy growing up. I recently bought her a framed collection of butterflies as a gift - these were butterflies that had reached their lifespan naturally and were collected afterward, which is a process I prefer to catching butterflies live.🦋 Always love your work & look so forward to your weekly videos ❤
I think the little white wings need more definition on the back. As for skin tones go for it! I had a dark brown one I won at a carnival in Australia. It was tied to a thin bamboo cane and wore bright green netting tutu. Also do longer eyelashes in them. These are very marketable! Nice job!
Kewpie one with angel wings and a butterfly to match would be cute or a hat to match the color of the wings. Blue eyed and green eyed Kewpie ones as well.
Hey, as a Latina, I tell you that in my opinion different skin tones would look super cute!
They would look cute. She's tried other skin tones for some past figurines in the mystery mould series but the different brownish glazes that she had available to her at the time were a little too green hued imo to look natural. Yes I agree. And then in as many different skin colours as possible. Or a whole series with weird colours
I think she will have to do some testing.. i would love to see if it works out.
I agree! It would be adorable.
Hey, as an Asian, I think so too!
I think a kewpie for every month would be cute. Pumpkins, fall leaves, snowflakes, new year’s hat, etc! ❤❤❤
I was thinking the same thing
In the states during the 80s the Kewpies came in a few skin tones. The hair was a little colored on the crown, cheeks on the front and back were a little rosy. They look so cute.
Love the salt and pepper shaker idea. Maybe an Angel and Devil set could be cool. Also yes on the tattooed Kewpie please!
O that sounds so cool 😄
You could totally use a butterfly and put it on the back of one of the dolls like wings
I was so sad she didn’t! That was my first thought 😭
As long as it doesn’t make the figurine too back-heavy, that’s a wonderful idea!
To avoid blackface (and other -faces), just make sure the dolls do not have true black, grey, red, yellow, or blue-brown skin, that you don't make the eyes smaller to represent East Asian dolls, and that none of the brown dolls have red lips (you can give them darker or duller brown lips). Omg a little strawberry, bee, or mushroom one would be adorable!and definitely different skin tones! The blind box idea is cute in theory but I’m over it in real life
Different skin tones , gets a yes from me. Little skirts of slip dipped tulle in the shape of petals would be cute as well.
I had a plastic 80s kewpie doll! As a non-BIPOC woman - who grew up during the cabbage patch kids era where the big reason they were so popular is the wide variety of skin tones - I think that expanding beyond the pink kewpie doll is a good idea.

I think a bit of variation in their skin would be nice not just skin tone but the addition of rosy cheeks, the lines of their lips etc
eyebrows 🙂
If you painted the Cupie in just random designs like you’ve done to frogs in the past I would totally buy one. Just a random cupie with a vibrant crazy pattern.
Perhaps the skin tones could reflect their attachments. For example the one with leaf attachments could have a pale green "skin tone" who says you have to stick to the rules x
These are adorable! I think you should definitely do an array of skin tones!
Def yes for diffrent tones! I was confused as to why you hadn't already done so when i saw their colours after the oven but i understand your nerves after explanation haha, def yes to diffrent tones :)
They're definitely cute and I agree on including different skin tones
The second flower one i think are African violets ❤
Yes, I thought the same thing. Really looks like violets to me.
Came to say the same!
That’s what I was going to comment 😊
Came here to say this, but you beat me to it!
Now you need to add some of the flowers as well.
When you opened the kiln, my first reaction was “it’s an invasion”. Reminds me of stormtroopers all lined up
Rose O'Neill was a friend of my grandmother, great aunt & great grandparents. This was a shock to see! It brings me such joy to see Kewpies in pop culture. Also, those butterflies are gorgeous!

You could use the butterflies to make a mobile.
I love the idea of other skin tones, I think it is an inclusive idea ❤

It was an adorable army of Cupies in the kiln 😂 I was like “ahh so cute! They look like an army of cute fairy babies!” When you opened it!
I love these little kewpie cuties 😍 please make them with all different skin tones and tiny flower/ leaf/ animal/ bug accent and hats ❤❤❤
YES!!! I remember those too but couldn't remember if they were true kewpies! But I distinctly remember twirling one on a stick hehe!!
Idea for another cute variant : dress one up as a cute video game character like Spyro the Dragon
Kewpie dolls are in a category of their own - I had them when I was a little kid.
I like your idea of May Gibbs inspired ones. Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie would be cute. When your assistant has picked the moulds I wonder where they being kind or evil. They have given you a few shockers 🤣
I was so excited to see your take on the tattoo Kewpie. I hope you have time to do it in the future. These are so adorable!
The kewpie dolls look so cute, and you should do them as a mystery box gift. I can't wait to see what your announcement is next week

My 5yo is enamored!! We love the flowers and butterflies! (Adelaide)
I definitely think a variety of skin tones would be good!
Adorable! Varying skin tones would be lovely.
Never been a huge fan of the cewpie doll, these turned out to be pretty cute I really liked the ones with the flower hats and the butterfly ones.
Yes do mysteries ones please I love one of these❤❤🎉
The first doll looked like a ‘Jelly Baby’ 😁 then the second was the same lol. You could start with a whiter pale skin and work your way though every skin tone, I think that would be really sweet esp a black one . Plus one like Boss one from the movie x
100% you should do the tattoos on the kuppie! A bit of gold on the wings would be beautiful.
Adding butterfly wings to the back to make them fairies would be cute.
There are people who repaint the precious moments figurines into Goth designs. They are actually super cute! But it made me wonder if you could do something like that with the Kewpies!
What about some "biker" style tatoos, lol. Now I'm also thinking henna style tatoos but I'm not sure if it would be acceptable.
I always thought the "hair" on the back were little tiny wings. Salt and pepper shakers would be awesome
I love the flower hat ones, so very cute. Let us pick them out on the site, please!
Remember how we used to get Cupies at school fetes? They were always dressed in a tutu and attached to a bamboo 'walking stick'
YES!!
May Gibbs cuddle pie and snuggle pot ones would be cute and amazing.
I thought that you’d use the butterflies as wings for the dolls, but they were probably too small to do that. And then I noticed they have tiny little wings already!
I love what you did by having the butterflies and lilies and flowers perched upon the dolls. So cute!
They are so cute! The one with just the green leaves/petals is my favorite. 💚💚
Definitely do more skin tones. Diversity is all the go in dolls these days. Great job!!❤❤❤❤
Tiny frogs, ladybugs, fruit, anything with these dolls would be adorable!
I need a butterfly one or the one with the flower on their head like a hat! Loveeeeee
Those remind me of the “Love is…..” little dolls.
I woud love them with dresses and your flowers
A cupie doll as a gumnut baby would look great.
Cupies are adorable. I like the hearts one. A holiday series.
I’m nnot really into dolls but the kewpies were freaking adorable, especially the one with butterflies!
Those Flower jeans are so cute! Your style is so cool and funky! Those cupie dolls are such a vibe~ They came out so good! ♥
I would definitely like to see multiple skin tones for these guy.
That domino drop made me laugh Shelby..they're cute..
I feel like these would benefit from antiquing. The pink of the body is too much unbroken colour and its a bit flat. Maybe it could be done with a brown or just a darker tone of the body?

And mystery box exclusives for the ones that are more time intensive and have less of them idk, but having an option for both would be good, in my opinion
These remind me so much of the Disney short water babies. Especially the leaves and the flowers.
You could do some Anne Geddes style ones!
Absolutely adorable! A mystery series is a brilliant idea.
My great grandmother had a cupie sitting on her windowsill in her kitchen so these just make me smile.
Dang I hoped you would attach the big butterfly as wings to one 😄
I do think a variety of skin tones would be fun. Or maybe Vitiligo.
But I am as white as you can be so don’t take my word for it.
Great video, the flower one is an Alberta wild rose and the Kewpie Doll one would be great together being back to back or maybe as bookstands. They would look good in the garden too. Love the jumper.
They are gorgeous and so many things you can do with them.
All I can think about is completely covering the doll in butterflies with a big wide-eyed stare of horror!
I love the flower hat kewpie.
I have my grandmothers Kewpie doll, she drilled holes in its head and used it as a body powder shaker.
having different diversity would be awesome. For the hair you could make it like a soft wipe on color.
you have a winner here! I can easily see folks buying whole sets of these figurines.
I like this baby art piece it’s so cute and with the little pieces attached to them makes then even cuter and yes they do remind me of Sony Angel
I think different skin tones would be amazing, and mystery boxes would be so good
The flower and leaves are violets. So pretty.
Those were adorable and maybe cast them onto holiday moods also.
I have loved Kewpie babies since I was little. I'm 45. I got a plastic one for my daughter when she was little. She is now 23 and still has her. I really hope you include these kewpies in a count down calendar!! ❤❤
I have been WAITING for you to do the butterfly one ever since that mould collecting video! So glad I finally got to see them!
They are cute. I like the butterfly one and lily pad one.
Definitely more little dolls of color! As an Asian, please don't make the eyes look squinty, but a huge yes on gorgeous brown eyes!
I think they are just so adorable as is.
I would like to see mobiles or suncatchers made with the African Violet flowers/leaves, the daisies/leaves, and the butterflies.
Soooo cute! Congrats on making your first doll! As a doll maker, I'm so proud ^_^ My favorite one the one with the leaves on it. I think different skin tones would be awesome! Even colorful themed ones would be adorable!

I'm picturing them done gumnut babie style, with a leaf and flower skirt and a butterfly or bee friend. Id love to see the add ons mixed together.
The kewpies I have seen have a light brown swirly curl for the hat. I love them!
My fav is the one with the blue flower hat. I remember seeing kupies with dark skin tones years ago.
So cute! I'd like to see some painted in your all design style! 🌸
I think Kewpie dolls are so adorable!
I can't wait for the review of the mug moulds.
I love the attachment-molds! The third mould looks like violets :)
Kewpie one with angel wings and a butterfly to match would be cute or a hat to match the color of the wings. Blue eyed and green eyed Kewpie ones as well.
