  • We use our riding lawn mower a lot! It would be great if there were a lawn-tractor-sized “spinner” knob that made it easier to turn the steering wheel. There is! Is it “Yea or Nay with DirtFarmerJay?”

No kidding. I had thought it would be great if there was a “spinner” knob for lawn tractor steering wheels. And, there it was, hanging on a hook at our local Tractor Supply Company. It looked well made, and for $20, I had to give it a try.
The knob is offered by GVPower.com, and this is one of their several lawn tractor accessories. We hope to review those later and see if they are legitimate solutions to the problems that we as homeowners and gardeners experience.
The Easy-Rider™ comes in green, gray, and red. We chose green to get a close match to our John Deere® lawn tractor. Everything you need to install the unit comes in the box, it and it installs in just three steps. Well, there is one other thing you’ll need - either a utility knife or a small straight-blade screwdriver to pry off the cover cap of the unit.
The instructions walk you through these steps:
    1. Remove the top cover of the knob. Using the included hex wrench, remove the center bolt and washer. Set them aside, and slide up the knob off the inner molded sleeve. Remove the inner sleeve from around the ring clamp.
    2. Determine if the diameter of your steering wheel is large enough that the ring clamp will tighten around it properly. If not, use the included molded shim.
    3. Undo the ring clamp and place it around the steering wheel at the desired position. A good starting point is the 2 O’clock position for right-handed steerers and the 10 O’clock position for left-handed steerers.
    4. Once you have determined what position on the wheel you want the Easy-Rider™ to be, place the molded inner sleeve over the ring clamp and push it down tight. Then install the outer knob over the sleeve, followed by the washer, and finally the hex head bolt. Use the hex key to tighten the Easy-Rider™ into place securely.
The process took about 5 minutes. This was very easy and we like the result.
The Easy-Rider™ gets a “Yea” from us. We are going to like using this and it is well made, so we think we’ll enjoy this enhancement for many years to come.

I don't have this particular brand. But, this is something everyone should have on their mowers. I can't believe more people don't use them.

I injured my left wrist and remembered this video. I bought one of these and installed it on my lawnmower. It was a bit difficulty to install with an injured wrist, but what a difference it made. Thanks, DFJ!

I'm gonna go buy this knob as per your review and if it don't fit or falls apart while installing it on my JD mower, you're gonna hear from me!

I remember seeing those on old trucks that did not have power steering. Definitely a less expensive alternative to purchasing a garden tractor with power steering.

I remember these as well on some of the vehicles my family had when I was a kid. My Kubota compact tractor has one and I wouldn't be without it. Best, DFJ

They are great, my dad used to use them on his farm tractors back in the 60s and 70s and he also put one on our riding lawn mower back then and I used it from mower to mower until I got a zero turn and don't need it. It was common back then and was mad of wood back then but the same thing. I think they made them illegal to use in cars at some point if I remember correctly since you could break a wrist with the one in the car and how that operated. Might be wrong on that but seems like I remember something like that but great on tractors. Thumbs up!!

No, it's too small. I've found auto steering wheel covers at places like AutoZone and O'Reilly Auto Parts, as well as Walmart's auto section. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ
