When you listen to songs from this era without the video, you’re missing half the song, it was that important. This was original, different and immensely popular.

He was professor Magnus Pike. In the UK, he was quite famous as a somewhat eccentric TV presenter who waved his arms about a lot. It has been suggested that this song did not do as well in Dolby's native UK as some of his other songs because people here wrote it off as a novelty song because he had Magnus Pike in the video.
Absolutely! Kids today need to understand the reference because there are just too many opportunities to yell "SCIENCE!" and it sucks when no one gets it.
It’s easy to write him off as fun (or “cheesy” like people obviously think), but Thomas Dolby is remarkable. He started in music as a sound engineer. From an early age he began building his own synthesizers and PA systems (in the late 70s). He was in a band with Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes from the Buggles (Downes also from Asia), and part of Lene Lovich's band where he wrote the song, “New Toy”. However, he wasn’t all fluff and fun. Try "One of Our Submarines" next time, which I consider an 80s masterpiece. I think people think this song is "cheesy" because of the mad scientist persona he portrayed in the video. Dolby created the persona as a way to get people interested in synth music, and although it was laying it on a bit thick, he was a true pioneer and it worked with a teenage me in the early 80's.
Yeah, I always feel like people think Thomas Dolby is going to be this cheesy pop guy, but his music is quite interesting and experimental. Sometimes he hits the right amount of catchy pop goodness in his tunes that sounds like nothing else anyone else was doing at the time, and sometimes they're wildly experimental and it still sounds like it to this day. He really got shoehorned into a one-hit wonder realm of cheesy pop guy, but he's really not. And he is supremely talented.

I saw Thomas Dolby perform this live once, and what was crazy is he was alone on the stage, ducking between different synths and sound pads. The song is so mechanical and sample-based he literally just had to press some buttons at the right times to recreate the melodies and sound effects. And yet he was 100% performing in front of me in spite of the music literally being programmed. Like everyone else, I was vibing off his presence, like any other musician giving a concert. It made me look at music completely differently than I had before. So freaking cool.

Your Rolling Skating/Middle School conversation was spot on! We loved silly, fun songs in the 80's, and every year, a few gems would come out. This was in 1982, early in the decade. I loved some of his other songs, too, they had an atmospheric, electronic vibe. "One of Our Submarines" is haunting!
Cheesiest could also be Jungle Love by Morris and The Time. From the movie, Purple Rain. Written by Prince!! 1984. OweeOwee-oh! So catchy. A real vibe! In 2022 they won the Legend award. And they’re still performing today..Very well. Funky! “Obsession” by Animotion. A lot of us think it is the Grand Puba of 80s excess, fun and drama and it’s a great song. Video is super cheese! Some may say I'm crazy, but in his way Thomas Dolby is in a class with Brian Eno, Prince or Frank Zappa, he is that capable, creative and innovative.
Agree. Total genius.
I love that after she tidied up, he couldn't find his 'antiquated notions'. I saw him in concert in the 80s, and it was one of the most fun shows I've seen.
I loved dancing to this song in 83
Man, you need the music video of this !!!!!
Plus, there is science behind this song, ya gotta learn the history !
Dolby is a wise genius
Like a lot of these songs in the 80s the video was a big part of the song.
This was the first video I saw on MTV way back in 1983.
Circular Impression By the Extras and Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes are really fine cheese for the 80’s alternative crowd.
First thought that comes to my mind is "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia
I used to have the vinyl copy of the full album.
@@danjennings8618Me too. I think it’s still in a crate at my folks place. Go, Froggie, Go was my favorite.
Certainly one of the funniest videos of the 80's.
Gotta have the video. This was prime MTV time and we loved it! ❤
Nice choice! Please do carry on with this 'genre'; so many winners to be heard (and watched; PLEASE watch their accompanying video as well).
You guys, I graduated high school in 1985....You absolutely nailed this review. AND for that I thank you 😊
Recommend you try some Oingo Boingo. Halloween is coming. It's time for a "Dead Mans Party"
Luv this song...I'm a 60's born kid so the 80's gold 💛
There was a term for this sound floating around back in the day called "Robo-funk". It never really caught on, but I think it's an excellent way to describe it and we need to bring it back!
I agree 100%. This song was from the MTV generation. The video is important to the song.
