I was a kid when saw this and was blown away! This was super close to my hometown in PR, and to see my fav longboard company be in and document such a cool event was surreal. My first board was a pintail 37, man were those trucks were BUTTERY.
Arbor prodigy is a solid board to get started on for sure. The important thing to remember is that you CAN slide any board, its about the rider, how much you practice, and how you build your confidence. Start slow and dont scare yourself (or hurt yourself! thats worse). Have fun while you learn and make it about the ride and not the goal (whether thats sliding or otherwise). Enjoy yourself out there!
That would be Mr. Louis Pilloni of Sector 9 / Skate House Media, killing it on his way to winning the Jam. The Skate House tie dye shirts (which he is rocking) just went on sale last month over at skate house, check em out.
Are you looking to go fast down hills? Skate parks, pools and do street tricks? Carve, cruise and push around? Some of everything? Do you like what you see in this video if so, which part? There are lots of things to learn and lots of places to start from. It's important to know where YOU personally want to go with your riding so that you can at least take a good guess at what might work well.
I'm thinking more of carve, cruise, and pushing around. I thought the tricks were amazing in the video! However, I wouldn't want to try the tricks and style of skating until I master the basics. I want to start skating on flat ground, and, for now, I want to learn just the basics of skateboarding. Thanks for your help so far! :)
With the 9 ply 36.75 inch Arbiter at $99 (currently shipping free world wide) it doesn't seem that likely to me that a smaller board with less complex wheel wells and fewer plies would come in 20% more expensive. But you never know.
GREAT job with this. there was a while, when it was only cool to ride those tiny wheels and skateboarding lost itself to my ducati. NOW tho, I was using the rear foot go-fast technique. SO: IS WETTING THE PAVEMENT A GOOD IDEA FOR LEARNING TO DO THOSE SLIDES?
Depends on what type of riding you want to do. That's the first place to start. Even within this video you see many different styles of riding, there is a good board and a better board for each. From there you can worry about companies and specific board models, everyone has their favorite and we (Original Skateboards) design boards as well which you are welcome to check out.
Dah, sorry xnin, no go on that. The newer carbon Apexes are one of the thinnest decks on the market (a little under 1/3rd of an inch thin) so the older boards are too thick for the guards. That thin-ness is one of the reasons you don't see other boards with guards like this, it is just WAY more expensive to make a strong guard like these for a thicker board.
Hmm. 90lbs might be a little smallish for the board but I would be surprised if it was to the point where you couldn't control it. For a smaller board the freeride 38 would be comparable, minus the drop. Actually, the Apex 37 diamond drop would be a great option and not as big or heavy as the drop freeride, plus it has a big upside in freestyle as far as durability is concerned. Should be out in the next two weeks.
Weight is only one component of good freestyle performance and is not even the primary performance attribute. Look for kick angle, board balance, pop and spin speed as those will be better indicators of how a longboard will work for tricks, at least thats what we found when researching freestyle performance. The Apex 40 DiamondDrop takes those findings and incorporates them into what is (in my opinion) our highest performance freestyle deck.
@jaybboyjay start with simple stand up 180's. those tricks open a window to so many other slides. Just get a jogging pace bend down and throw your arms to gain momentum to 180. Also pop up when your bout to slide. (Always carve into it that applies to any slide ) hope this helps
Hey some of my top wheels for sliding are Abec11 Flashbacks, Grippins, freerides in 78a or 81a, Checker volantes or Morgans, and 86a fat frees if you like a little bit more slip. _Davey
Hey Originl I love your products and I was thinking of purchasing the drop freeride 41, but I have heard that if you are under 115 pounds you should not get it because it is to heavy to control. I weigh 90ish pounds and I was wondering if that board would work or a differnt board would suit me better. By the way I am going to use it for freeride or freestyle and My budget is about 220ish
Original does it right for a longboard company ive riding a few boards and ive never liked a board as much as the original apex 34, even though im saving for a arbiter because im looking for a board that can go downhill and freestyle. for Starr E I suggest the derringer or a pintail you get the feel of longboarding and you have the opportunity to get more experience .
wich skateboard is the best for sliding?? I would like to learn how to slide, already got a down hill board as a gift but I dont know exactly what type of riding can I do with it. (the board I got is a Arbor Prodigy)
Hey Tim. I think you're talking about a DIY foot stop , which just creates another contact point for a riders foot. Are you looking at adapting your concave or just generally curious?
I would like to adapt my concave on my Apex 37. Would you think it makes sense to add those? Or are there other ways I could adapt my concave? Thank you in advance.
Hey original im interested i a long that fits me, my weight is 175 and i am 5'10 i bought a longboard new but cheap but i dont feel so safe in balance on it please help!! P.S Love you guys and IM a PUERTO RICAN!!!!
Depends on what you like and on what type of downhill stuff you are riding. Mostly its separated by whether you need to slide or whether you want all grip. A lot of it is personal preference or related to the type of pavement you are riding. What kind of stuff are you doing?
Bandwagons are for politics. We leave riding, and how to ride, to our riders... Then make the boards they want to use while they do their thing. If you want to bash us, or them, for being un-original I suggest you come out to an event (maybe this one next year?) and let your skating do your talking. We will do the same and everyone can have a good time, have a few drinks, and get to know each other a little better. I think that's what it's all about right?
Bomb ass edit. This is what I'd like to see more of

Thanks for responding so quickly! I just want a board where I can practice and learn how to skateboard. Maybe something that is easy to ride?
Wauu was really great. a question that kind of longboard used, are very light to do freestyle.

Bustin Sporster because you can do anything with it
Zombie Hawgs would be good for JUST sliding. O-tang stimulus or fat free wheels are a good all around wheel.

foot stoppers so if your going fast your feet wont slide out of something like that
